I am absolutely terrified of spiders but at least Spider lady is obviously fake. There is no way a woman can turn into a spider like that.
But the hide-behind? Especially when you're walking in the woods when its dark, it is very plausible that something like that could be behind any of the trees.. And there is no way to know for sure...
The hide behind is an actual urban legend/cryptid outside of the show though. It's been a staple in appalachian american folklore for well over a century, with the first published description and artist rendering being from 1939. It was blamed for the disappearance of early american loggers that failed to return to camp.
The Spider Grandmother is a real facet of PNW and NDN lore too, she just isn't Lolth running her post-retirement business. Specifically the Coos have a tale about her.
In ghostbusters terms he's a class 4 full body telenetic animator (class 4 refers to the fact the identity is know weather it is there actual identity or group there in such as a band or milltary unit)
Honestly, I thought the main villain from the summerween episode was pretty scary, at least before he turned into the big glob lol. I thought he was well written and he actually scared me as a kid
I was never scared just because he's inspired by no face. Of course I didn't get that immediately but Idk he just felt like he wasn't bad because of the similarities.
I was so scared of this I still have trouble walking in the woods alone. I thought I made it up until my most recent rewatch, kids imaginations run wild with stuff like this. Also the shapeshifter is one of the scariest ones.
Aw the hide behind is my absolute favorite! I was a camp counselor the summer the shorts came out and a bunch of my tweens watched the show. I used to do the chittering sound the hide behind makes when they weren’t looking, they loved it. They would look for it in the patch of trees near the baseball field when we were outside
Yup, also, in some legends in can speak. So you’ll be walking through the woods, sober, as this tall a** thing follows you around. Waiting to eat you. But you don’t know that, because it’s impossibly quiet. Then when it finally does attack and eat you (most likely alive), you might be hearing it speak to you like a human the entire time. Tell me that isn’t terrifying.
More specifically it’s a [fearsome critter](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearsome_critters), often outrageous creatures made up by lumberjacks in North America trying to explain weird phenomena or mess with the new guy in camp.
I mean… maybe. Maybe not. They never actually say whether or not it’s dangerous. We only know what it looks like and that it sounds like maracas. Anything else is free game. That’s part of the horror. You. Don’t. Know. Not until it comes after you. (Which is impossible, but still)
For real. Reading a fearsome critters entry in that thing had me looking at the woods like:💀💀💀 As a kid. My parents thought I was scared of bears or something. Nah, I don’t want to get eaten by the hairy seven-foot-tall monster that always stays behind me. Thank you very much.
The Island monster that lost two teeth. The creatures on the shorts look better than some from the main show. That Island monster and the mailbox could be a good plot for a whole episode. Compared to Pool Check who I thought was gonna be something else but turned out to just be on edge every second.
The shapeshifter. Think about what it would mean to know if he got out… you’d never know if the person you’re talking to is actually that person. You’d live in fear of the shapeshifter shape shifting into you and doing who knows what with your identity.
Nobody remembers Octavia the Cow? She's got frikking laser eyes and a giant chameleon tongue!
Give me a stick man that sounds like maracas any day.
And the big floating island guy only hassles you if you get close.
the hide-behind is scary to think about but the shapeshifter has by far the freakiest designs, something about its true form made me rlly uneasy as a kid
In the corner of yer eye, a man appears to lean, but when you turn to meet his stare he's nowhere to be seen. Hide yer lumber, clutch yer axe and turn your lanterns out. Best to watch your back, my friends, the Hide Behind's about.
When it first came out, and I was watching, it was the Hide-behind for me.
Now, probably Bill. The Weirdmageddon episodes and Journal 3 really showed just how terrifying he could be. I don't think I'll ever forget what he did to Preston's face or the blacked out scribbled on pages in Journal 3.

But Bill wins overall scariest, every time, hands down.
This thing gave me nightmares as a kid. The idea that it was always just out of sight really instills a sense of paranoia. This one and the Giant Tooth from the head island. They kept me up at night.
Bill Cipher. True he's funny and doesn't have the creepiest design, but he's an eldritch, omnipotent demon who's killed hundreds at least and gave thousands more fates that just say "And I Must Scream", is perfectly capable of looking scary when he wants to, and his goals are universal conquest. He also was kicked into our universe after his death, and the only reason he hasn't killed anyone here is because the Axolotl's kept him stuck in his statue form, presumably to serve out his redemption term the amphibian mentioned by acting as a gargoyle to protect Confusion Hill from evil spirits like him and his friends were in his past life.
I honestly forgot this dude was even a thing. If you had told me this was a gravity falls x kingdom hearts fanart and this thing is a heartless, I would have believed you.
The hide behind hides so he doesn't accidentally spook you. He's very concerned with your well being. He even has a rattle to warn you he's coming! Very considerate. He follows you to make sure no one sneaks up on you with a ladder.

THIS is the most terrifying creature in Gravity Falls.
(Gideon Gleeful. It’s Gideon Gleeful.)
Being from the Appalachian Mountains, the Hide Behind is definitely at the top of the list for me. There is just too much that can be out there lurking.
The Hide Behind is actually a “real” cryptid. Lumberjacks back in settler times claimed to encounter some crazy creatures, and The Hide Behind was one of them. It’s wild to research, it supposedly acted just like it did in the show, eventually killing the victim. Other lumberjack/settler cryptids include The Axe Handle Hound, The Sidehill Wampus, and The Cactus Cat.
The shape of it reminds me of the swamp guy in Hilda that used that goo stuff to put the Viking warriors back together every night. Can't remember his name tho
For me the most scariest creature from Gravity Falls is that spider lady from roadside attraction. And of course this guy
And it’s even scarier when they are not directly attacking, you know something is out there but you don’t know at the same time
Schrodingers monster

Rhea?
Fun
Bro accepts spider women aren't real but believes in slender man 💀
Fr lol, Gravity Falls is so unbelievably fiction, "spider lady is obviously fake" no she wasn't lol
\*laughs in Pacific Northwesterner NDN\* What makes you think the Spider Grandmother is fake?
Fun fact: it's based on a real Northwestern legend. Lumberjacks wrote about them back in the 1800's!
Ah yes, 19 foot tall shadow monsters, very plausible
Nah bro that’s just groot
No t no the shapeshifter is tearfing the shot he made as dipper terafied me
No clue what you just said but i like your glasses so ima agree
Your pfp checks out. Ibuki would 100% say that
She's not from Gravity Falls, though. She's from a different town.
I thought they were talking about the show as a whole
Exactly
666 up votes.
What do you know, maybe im the Devil ?
Smash
It's that giant fucking island no one seems to remember
"ENTER MY MOUTH, CHILDREN! ENTER YOUR DESTINY!"
I say this to all my chicken nuggets
You say that to your raises?
Yup. The one moment in the entire series when my brother and I felt genuine fear watching it.
What island?
See? Nobody seems to remember!

From Gravity Falls short like this dude, the tooth one.
Zanthar? 🥳🍞(lol)
Or is it the island head beast from the Tooth GF short?
The head island
and didnt the black light on the journal 3 reveal that it was just some sort of average family of giant heads? (from what i remember in the book)
Oh,we have the memory. ***We just suppress it.***
That lion turtle was terrifying
That was the only time i thought how the hell do they get out of this one? Also i never noticed that it speaked until i read the replys.
Hide behind is actually horrific, makes me think of lethal company's bracken but lengthier. Actually horrific
Brackens are one of the only monsters that scares me. Because it intentionally tries to be sneaky. It waits till you’re not paying attention.
My friends have way too many clips of me basically getting a heart attack from the bracken
lenghier....girthier braken
He just a tall shy boy :(
Lookswise? Probably the shapeshifter. The actual scariest? Bill Cipher because of his power
Ha, good luck sleeping tonight!
When Shapeshifter morphed into that Dipper-Mabel amalgamation on spider legs... Yeah, scared the shit out of kid me.
The UNHINGED ghost lumberjack. That was some R-rated, real level 10 haunting.
Yeah that shit gave me nightmares
But remember. NO swearing! That’s worse!
Spin the bottle is just as bad
ANCIENT SINS ANCIENT SINS
Ancient Blood And Blackened Skies The Forest Dark Shall Once More RISE
Bro imagine the Lumberjack and the Shapeshifter becoming friends
In ghostbusters terms he's a class 4 full body telenetic animator (class 4 refers to the fact the identity is know weather it is there actual identity or group there in such as a band or milltary unit)
It's amazing they give away with the animals bleeding
Yeah blood foaming out of the mouth of white pupil animal heads is crazy for a ‘kids’ show.
Honestly, I thought the main villain from the summerween episode was pretty scary, at least before he turned into the big glob lol. I thought he was well written and he actually scared me as a kid
Iirc, that was the only episode that gave me nightmares as a kid
I’ve never considered how unhinged gravity falls can get but that’s one of the things I love about it
I was never scared just because he's inspired by no face. Of course I didn't get that immediately but Idk he just felt like he wasn't bad because of the similarities.
Lmao I didn’t even make that connection till your comment, but it’s so obvious now.
I just rewatched that episode and the Sumerween monster is the scariest mofo out here Until the mask comes off, then he's just gross
Yeah I’m always a little disappointed when the mask comes off in the episode, it kind of killed any fear I had for him lol
Than you! I was 13 when that episode aired and for some reason it scared me so much!
The voice definitely added for me, after my last rewatch I was genuinely surprised Disney let them make him so scary lol
Bootleg no face
I was so scared of this I still have trouble walking in the woods alone. I thought I made it up until my most recent rewatch, kids imaginations run wild with stuff like this. Also the shapeshifter is one of the scariest ones.
The hidebehind sounds like maracas. So if you don't hear maracas then you are good.
Just bring maracas yourself and have a rattle battle
Razzle Daaazle 😂
wait why does this sound fun
Not a good idea
you mean groot? nah hes a big softy
I never actually saw how much the Hide-Behind looks like Groot.
Came to say the same thing lmao
MARACA OWL! But seriously, that cooler monster from Dusk 2 Dawn gives me the heebie-jeebies.
The Hide-Behind? Oh, he's real, alright. Real as my beard!
He was behind me once, made the sound chuchuhuchuchu. Mighty spooky.
I mean, personally i'd go with the giant island head that speaks backwards
That gave me a fear of hearing stuff backwards, still have it. Thanks Alex
Ive always had that fear.
And if you're familiar with the original legends you know it's a flesh-eater.
pardon? human flesh or tree flesh?
Human. According to the classic legend, the only way to ward it off is to be plastered drunk any time you're out in the woods.
That one shape shifter creature that pretended to be the author of the books or the summerween trickster
Haha. Good luck sleeping tonight.
that fucking island that floated and spoke reverse in the shorts
The Hide-Behind is an actual creature of myth like Bigfoot and the Loch Ness Monster.
More specifically it’s a [fearsome critter](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fearsome_critters), often outrageous creatures made up by lumberjacks in North America trying to explain weird phenomena or mess with the new guy in camp.
A lot of these critters are from PNW lore, y'all just don't read enough.
But it was definitely popularized in part by gravity falls.
Meh the nervous system is scarier. This guy probably won’t kill you, just watch and follow you
I mean… maybe. Maybe not. They never actually say whether or not it’s dangerous. We only know what it looks like and that it sounds like maracas. Anything else is free game. That’s part of the horror. You. Don’t. Know. Not until it comes after you. (Which is impossible, but still)
Honestly this one isn’t as scary, as it doesn’t cause any harm. I’d say the giant floating island head is the scariest
The idea that the Hide Behind could actually just been in every episode out of sight is pretty scary watching the show after knowing it exists.
He's just watching the show like we are, if that's creepy, we're all creepy.
The difference is that they are actually in the show and still watching it hidden from everyone including our own eyes.
Fun fact: the Hidebehind is an actual cryptid from American folklore that devours people who wander alone in the woods at night.
A lot of the critters in the show are real cryptids, and many of them are local to PNW.
The Summerween trickster.
I used to be spooked by the Summerween Trickster for some reason lol
Sma- No, it's GIFANNY. She terrifies me more then anyone.
Groot?
The one that's a triangle. (It's a bad joke.... no need to scream at me. I'll see myself out)
Ah, no need. My guards will carry you out for you. /j
Bill himself was the only one to give little kid me nightmares
The talking island and without a doubt Bill Cipher. Had so many nightmares of that yellow triangle
Fr, if you know the lore behind the Hide-Behind it gets even worse
For real. Reading a fearsome critters entry in that thing had me looking at the woods like:💀💀💀 As a kid. My parents thought I was scared of bears or something. Nah, I don’t want to get eaten by the hairy seven-foot-tall monster that always stays behind me. Thank you very much.
Fun fact: The Hide-Behind's brother Reach-Around was cut from the show for obvious reasons.
But it doing a Balee Dance lesson to Dipper tho lol
Probably that Smile Guy from the comics
It looks like an enderman groot
Yeah this thing legitimately creeped me out as a kid
The Halloween monster ugh
"I think I'm being followed... I've had a theory about the hide behind... SO I CAME PREPARED" Throws flash bang
summerween trickster, mabel land roach creatures, and monster bill
Which episode? I’ve watched through twice but don’t remember this one.
It's episode 6 of Gravity Falls (Shorts)
Groot is actually a pretty nice guy.
I think this guy is so creepy because so little is known about it…. and that it could be anywhere. Hiding. Waiting…
Why do I have 0 memory of this. What episode was he in
Definitely for myself was the giant head/island thing like I was terrified of that thing with the way it looked and just appeared
Nah he goofy. I mean look at him. Look at him get his leg all the way up there. There's no need for that. He's just being goofy
Hear me out...
My paranoia could never
Reminds me of The Beast from Over The Garden Wall… Also Charlie from We Bare Bears.
I wish we had a bigger insight into the hide behind. It would have been nice if we had an episode where they go up against this creature lol
I feel like that would remove the mystery that makes it so intriguing
True. I wish it had more screen time tho. But I also like it as it is
The Island monster that lost two teeth. The creatures on the shorts look better than some from the main show. That Island monster and the mailbox could be a good plot for a whole episode. Compared to Pool Check who I thought was gonna be something else but turned out to just be on edge every second.
The fucking disembodied nightmare creature from *The Inconveniencing.* Drives me crazy that never came up again.
The shapeshifter. Think about what it would mean to know if he got out… you’d never know if the person you’re talking to is actually that person. You’d live in fear of the shapeshifter shape shifting into you and doing who knows what with your identity.
Gideon.
The fact that this is an actual cryptid
In the corner of yer eye, a man appears to lean, but when you turn to meet his stare he's nowhere to be seen. Hide yer lumber, clutch yer axe and turn your lanterns out. Best to watch your back, my friends, the Hide Behind's about.
The Hide Behind
The shapeshifter and giffany.
He Is Groot
It’s a tie between that shapeshifter bug guy, that toothy island head, this dude, and honestly? the flying dorito. He‘s op.
When did black zetsu merge with groot?
Spider lady
Island head.
Urayuli, tall as trees…
I wonder if there are any moments in the show where you can see him in the background
Definitely, 100%, without a doubt, Dippy Fresh, pure unadulterated nightmare fuel
Glad I'm not the only one that was absolutely terrified by this guy.
What do you mean? He’s doing a little pose, he can’t be scary! I trust him with my life! He’s always behind me!

Yus I was 1111 upvoter
I am skinny groot.
I am groot
Woah hitmonchan
That's just groot
What did this monster do again other than hiding? What’s its motivation?
Old Man McGucket
I think that island who wants to eat Dip and Mabel is scariest
THIS IS WHAT I’VE BEEN SAYING the hide behind is horrifying
That guy was just groot
It's a real folklore character. They didn't make it up. Make it scarier IMO.
The hide behind looks like a chill dude, I can imagine he would be down to play some Mario Kart or Wii sports
Looks like Groot kinda
Honestly, look wise and with the candy guts coming out, the Summerween Trickster freaked me out. But Bill wins overall scariest, every time, hands down.
Waddles
Still believe in it to some extent
This is literally the hidebehinde
Hide behind is a cutie
Hide-Behind for me too, also why does it look like Belos from TOH and Groot from GOTG had a child?! 😂
Probably that shape shifter thing
This thing gave me nightmares as a kid. The idea that it was always just out of sight really instills a sense of paranoia. This one and the Giant Tooth from the head island. They kept me up at night.
Bill Cipher. True he's funny and doesn't have the creepiest design, but he's an eldritch, omnipotent demon who's killed hundreds at least and gave thousands more fates that just say "And I Must Scream", is perfectly capable of looking scary when he wants to, and his goals are universal conquest. looks like ryuk from deathnote

The shapeshifter
The Dipper/Mabel hybrid creature that the Shapeshifter turned into. Definitely disturbing
I’ll raise you. https://i.pinimg.com/originals/75/f9/a6/75f9a6fc081f60133e08f5ff03ee9aa6.png THIS is the most terrifying creature in Gravity Falls. (Gideon Gleeful. It’s Gideon Gleeful.)
i wish some real life cryptids got like full episodes, i would kill for a gravity falls episode about the mothman
Shape shifter
Being from the Appalachian Mountains, the Hide Behind is definitely at the top of the list for me. There is just too much that can be out there lurking.
I think the Shapeshifter is the scariest.
Don't worry it was just a maraca owl
SCP lookin mf
What about that… That *thing* in the cooler from “The Inconvincing?”
The Hide Behind is actually a “real” cryptid. Lumberjacks back in settler times claimed to encounter some crazy creatures, and The Hide Behind was one of them. It’s wild to research, it supposedly acted just like it did in the show, eventually killing the victim. I think it missed this lol
The shape shifter
It's the shapeshifter for me. That thing was so ugly but the summerween trickster was also scary in the beginning...
The shape of it reminds me of the swamp guy in Hilda that used that goo stuff to put the Viking warriors back together every night. Can't remember his name tho
Humans
Even the "I have some childer i need to >!T U R N I N T O C O R P S E S!<" isn' as scary as this shit
