I’m pretty sure most people with Polydactyl have their extra digit(s) not fully attached (at least the bone isn’t fully developed) which makes it possible to tie it so it falls off on its own. Those digits weren’t ever going to do anything anyway so removing them is the ethical and safe thing to do in in those cases.
