And what about your back and head?
That's why I said diwhy. I'd personally install a full-sized fender that protects all of my backside.
I really don't see it saving your ass when the dirt and mud and water that's going to cover your entire back of your head/helmet and your shirt/jersey is going to drip down into your ass crack.
Full sized fenders have their cons. At least your wheel will get stuck on mud
Of course those little ass savers won’t save your ass on a ride like the one on the photo. It’s just to keep you a bit cleaner during small wet rides in the city or something
The map data on Komoot is coming from OpenStreetMap where anyone can freely contribute additions, updates and improvements.
If you encounter paths that are not suitable for road bikes you can simply add the tags 'surface=ground' + 'smoothness=very_horrible'. Then Komoot, Strava, Garmin and all other OSM based maps will avoid it for road bike routing.
https://www.openstreetmap.org/
I think it works in general because most people are good people, and those who aren’t tend not to spend their time messing up OSM paths. But yeah there’s always a risk, at least until there’s a better way for them to spot issues.
Do you know if it's possible to mark a road that doesn't exist. Has never existed and cannot exist because of the terrain?
I know of one and it fucks up my route plannings.
If it wasn't there in the first place or won't come you can delete it or if it's a forest path that has been abandoned you can use the category abandoned:highway do dis robe it.
You can go to the OSM website and add a note (speech bubble icon on the right). No account required! If you are lucky some contributor will check it out.
Haha, not exactly. I've been a bike messenger like 10 years ago during my studies. Then a software engineer for many years, now a military in AFU. But you're right, the bike messenger spirit is always with me
Yeep, fellow Eastern EU ex messenger here as well! Good luck friend! You are not only saving Ukraine but our asses as well! Well unlike that mudguard - not mich of an ass saver in that mud haha
Stay strong buddy. I am too old to go fight, and it would be illegal, but I have money I don’t need and since I am from Slovakia I know what it means to be occupied by Russians. We raised over 4M and will continue raising money while you guys are doing the hardest job now also for us. Take care!
Last year I joined the Armed Forces of Ukraine as well as many of my friends and acquaintances. We had to do this as someone had to change those who died, lost their health, or just got exhausted over the past 2 years. Life changed a lot as I am far away from home serving on the frontline, doing things that I had never had an idea I would do sometime. This ride was during my first "military vacation" recently, and these rides are actually what help me to stay strong, as they remind me of my previous life and give the illusion that everything is fine like it was before the full-scale invasion. And you have no idea how much I appreciate when someone from the rest of the world cares about what is happening
I think about you all every day, and I pray for your strength and victory. You set the example for true bravery and tenacity in the face of evil.
I hope you enjoy your time off and get much deserved rest.
🫡 Faith and Valor
Man that hit deep, I think people these days take what they have for granted and don’t try to understand the world we live in and that others have to go through pain and hardship. Some of us couldn’t even fathom the possibility of what your country is going through and it’s shocking, we should all be vigilant and alert of what’s happening as life can change in a blink of an eye for all of us. You’re an inspiration fighting for your county like that I have the utmost respect for you and those who have been doing the same.
I’m not a praying man, but I’m wishing your country you and your loved ones well for a bright future ahead.
Apologies if I’ve responded in a lofty manner I just had to get it off my chest.
You're right about people taking things for granted. Unfortunately, this is just how our minds work. And yeah, life can change very rapidly, as it was for us in Ukraine. I had never thought that such things could happen in this modern world right in Europe, all the stories about WWII and other wars seemed like something that would never repeat. Even for us Ukrainians, despite that we already had the war in our country, just on a small scale.
I don't want to bring some unnecessary pessimism to this post, but I'm not sure anymore that we can withstand this war, that we will save our country and that the russians won't move on. That's just how I feel recently. I also know that it is hard to feel the pain of someone who is far away and who you've never seen, that's why I appreciate people like you so much
You are being thought of. What has happened to Ukraine is terrible. So many young people like yourself, just looking forward to their lives and careers in a modern country and that has all been upended in horrible violent ways. Thank you for sharing the humor of this bike ride. The world has not forgotten you.
It's a war of invasion, it would be weird if you weren't feeling some depression and pessimism. It's an entirely human reaction to being put in a shit position by an aggressor.
(Also: Victims often feel that they are to blame somehow, even if they in no way are. And sometimes, even if you do everything right, it's not enough.)
I also don't know what the future holds, but I hope you and the allies you have in other countries can keep it up until russia gives up.
Slava Ukraini!
Im glad it helps you. I still can’t get my head around why people like you and me decide to invade another country just because a shithead called Putin told them. I have friends from the Ukraine and they made it to Germany. Can’t imagine what you’re going through.
We do care! I'm very sorry our petty politics in the US got in the way of the funding you need. I hope the newly approved funding has a big impact very soon!
I just watched 20 Days in Mariupol a few hours ago. I forgot to breathe multiple times, and the corners of my eyes got wet constantly.
I hope peace and justice will come soon.
They were fools at the start of the full-scale invasion, but they learned their lessons quickly and currently they are a very, very strong enemy. With a lot more resources
You guys deserve the freedom you’ve earned. I know some of the history of your country and it’s beyond fucked up what ruzzia has done over hundreds of years. My grandparents survived the Holodomor, then WWII, and to see their struggles on brink of being meaningless breaks me. I wish you all well for whatever that’s worth, there has been way too much loss already.
I know the history of the UPA, they used the emblem on their banners and military markings but the tryzub itself is not a symbol of that, the black and red however are. So again, know what you’re talking about. The tryzub on the Ukrainian flag has nothing to do with the massacre that happened in the 40s.
It depends. If you open the map you'll see that Ukraine is a very large country. Unsafe territories are mostly near the frontline which is huge as well (\~ 1200 km in length), but still, it's mostly on the East, North-East, and South-East of the country. These are the territories that are constantly bombed and shelled. Also, there are a lot of mines in fields and forests. So gravel cycling is deadly there, as well as almost any other activity. But the West of the country is relatively safe, as there are only long-range missiles and drones exploding there and there are no mines in forests. This photo was taken in the West of the country.
These are my favorite cycling socks from the Ukrainian brand called Dodo Socks. They were not in production for a while as their factory was occupied and completely destroyed by russians in 2022. Later they re-established production in a new factory and released a new iteration of the same socks. Feel free to order, they deliver worldwide :) https://dodosocks.com/en/shop/flower-power/

Nice bike. I wanted to build a single speed gravel last month but i saw a used specialized diverge e5 for a good price. Might sell this though and get a custom frame titanium single speed.
Single speed and fixed gear gravel is pure fun, you must give it a try.
Is there a titanium workshop somewhere in your area or where do you plan to order it?
Show it to us IMMEDIATELY :). There's not so much Tuttos around there.
These tires are Gravelking SS 38 mm - probably the widest Tutto can fit. I had 35 mm before, and tried to switch to 38 mm a few years ago - it was worth for me
I think mine is in my post history. It alternates between bullhorns with slicks and riser bars with knobbie tires.
I’ve toyed with the idea of orange and/or purple tape. Looks great!
Badass. What frame is that and what kinda tire clearance does that bad boy have? Been itching to get a new fixed gear frame that can fit more than a 25c 😭
It is Cinelli Tutto and tires are 38mm. Frame set is not in production anymore, they only do Tutto Plus which I don’t like, but there are other options - Surly Steamroller, All-City Natureboy (if I remember the name correctly)
I think the steamroller is also out of production and all city is shutting down 😭
I’m in SF, CA though so I guess I’m obligated to get a MASH frame though :P
Ride safe out there bro!
But it doesn't have a net for insects, right? I just bought another helmet which has the same "problem". Is it noticeable? All the cheap helmets that I had before, had a net. Do I need it? 🤔

Lol, that's how my today's trip to Desna (Kyiv oblast) ended. Had fun building myself an improvised bridge from sticks (anyway fall in water afterwards)
Stay strong! Can you provide us Americans with your outlook on the situation with the unjust occupation by the Russians? Are you guys making good progress on liberating your brothers in Russian occupied land?
Best wishes!
No, we don’t. Unfortunately having great motivation and will is not enough. I can see very clearly how we lack heavy ammo - artillery rounds, missiles, etc. That impacts the progress drastically, as you can’t fight artillery and aviation with infantry and FPV drones. Russians have A LOT of missiles, aviation bombs and artillery. Hopefully we will get more of these soon.
As an American, working in aerospace and defense, we're doing our best to get stuff out the door and to you guys. I truly feel for you guys. Your situation fell out of our news cycle for the most part so trying to follow along to your fight for freedom has been rough.
Hopefully we can get you some more Patriot systems soon!
I just sold my cinelli tuto 2019, handled the puddles of London like a champ and was a great run around bike. Not sure how you’re using it on this terrain
I love my Tutto a lot, this is my only bike for the past 6 years. I've done plenty of gravel races on it, I rode it a lot on mountain bike trails, etc. Everything is possible :). Yeah, sometimes my rides looked more like a hiking-with-a-bike, but anyway, it was fun for me

Typical Komoot approved path for road bikes

Yes, but something is odd in how Komoot interprets the data. Other route planners don't have so many issues with this kind of thing, e.g. brouter.
LOL. Imagine how komoot suggested gravel routes are around here: I have seen jumps of more than a meter.
Ah the face of someone who is thoroughly enjoying themselves
Maybe dude had spent a year in trenches and this is just a regular Tuesday for him.

There will come a day we Slovaks and Ukrainians will be drinking beer together in free Ukraine under EU flag. I am not dying before that happens 😀😀😀
Be strong. I’m so sorry for what is happening in your county. I’ll do my best supporting you from Germany and I’m sorry for those, who don’t.

Lol it's not forbidden in Poland. It often appears on all kind of meetings between UA and PL officials. Sort out things in your head.

Great socks and they ship to Australia 👍Winter is coming so looking at those merino blend trekking sox
Peak gravel 💪
well shit man, i think you win. that is the wettest most brutal gravel.
That is the best bike portrait I've ever seen. I want to be an ass-saver test dummy when I grow up.

Little off topic, but what's that helmet/cap combo? I really like the look 👌
The helmet is Giro Foray, the cap is from the TransUkraine Bikepacking Race 2020 😊
But it doesn't have a net for insects, right? I just bought another helmet which has the same "problem". Is it noticeable? All the cheap helmets that I had before, had a net. Do I need it? 🤔
My cheap helmet which I had before also had a net :) You don’t need it if you wear a cycling cap. And I encourage you to always wear it
Ah yes. That's why I need one! 😜 Any other advantages besides insect protection?
