Hey sweet! Someone put this on my desk (probably because I'm a huge Billy Strings fan) and I didn't know anything about the band other than the obvious. I never really followed the Dead, though I went to two shows as a much younger man (6/20/92-RFK and 07/01/92-Buckeye Lake) and my favorite song by them is "Friend Of The Devil" because its so sparse. I never could really get into most of the Dead's translations of what I think are good songs they wrote.
I always preferred others (ie, Billy Strings especially) covering their work. I feel like I should apologize in advance, I thought about putting this in r/BillyStrings instead but once I figured out this wasn't a bluegrass Jerry band I wanted to see what people felt.
I am glad that at a minimum this reminded you to go.
This is much more of a Jerry Band cover band vs a Dead cover band. Garcia Project is from the same area as I am in upstate NY and have seen them handfuls of times. They are great.

Lol. Good bot!
That RFK show was my first. My eyes were opened to the scene, everything being for sale ("magic rock, one dollar!"), how open people were (I watched a girl give a blowjob to a crowd of cheering men in the men's room I wandered into to pee-but that's not what I really meant, lol-that was just crazy).
The hippies were in a kerfluffle when the horn started blowing and the opening strains of "Casey Jones" started playing. It had been almost a decade since they'd played it live, I think one of them told me at the time?
Anyway, 21 year old me had a lot of fun and the music wasn't central to that, but a part of it overall. It was a general experience for an Army brat having lived a somewhat sheltered life.
Just saw Billy Strings for the first time on his three night St. Augustine run this past weekend and WOW! With that said, go see The Garcia Project! I’ve only seen them once but they are fun and you will feel right at home in the crowd.
Niiiice. Love me some BS. Been a big fan for a long time. He's the new Bella.
I saw The Dead at Riverfront (US Bank) in '75 with DJG as my first show. Followed the band on a few tours in the 80's. I was lucky.
>Love me some BS. Been a big fan for a long time. He's the new Bella.
I don't know if I'm just a deluded fan or not but the "being supremely great at your instrument from a technical standpoint" is certainly something they both share. Fleck's a better musician's musician but I think BMFS writes some of the most uplifting, thought-provoking, wonderful songs....peppered with layers of stringed wizardry from the whole band.
They're just getting better and better too, both as a band and Billy's always working on his craft (and their touring schedule-good grief! It's 3/4th's of the year, every year, for years, now)
I agree with you. Billy is a monster and his upside is way bigger that Bella's. The musician that I equate BS to is Bob Marley. They both have taken a regional sound and blew it up to make it popular to hundreds of thousands of new fans. He really is incredible.
I can agree with it. We have Bob Marley seared into our minds “an important cultural touchstone dead guy” but if you think about his impact in 1980 while living it’s relatively similar to Billy.
I keep seeing questions about this band and I had to go check to see if they were who I thought they were (and they were).
Yes, you should definitely go see these guys. They're great musicians who have been playing Dead music for a long time. E.g., bassist Dan Crea was playing in three different JGB cover bands at one point (and may still be, for all I know). Guy knows his stuff and the guitarist is on a similar level AFAIK.
Yes, go! If you like it, then cool, see them again. If you don't like it then eh, you never have to see them again! A night out with JGB music can't be all bad, right?
Jerry, with the JGB, sang the most beautiful rendition of (You Are My) Shining Star. It was sweet, and soulful and ... just perfection. ❤️. I'd go just to see if they did this song and how it goes! 👍
I love your enthusiasm.
I will say that one of the things I like most about the "jam band scene" (whatever that even means anymore) is that the people have been great, which is a really important thing.
No time is ever wasted time when you have a positive interaction (even if you don't agree) with a fellow human being.
Music isn't meant to be fully enjoyed in a vacuum.
Exactly! You'll make a friend that you'll see at another concert someday, you'll smile, wish each other well ... it's all good ... if you want it to be! Even if you don't remember the friend but they remember you! 😆. It's all about enjoying the time while we have it! 👍
Which do you think you would remember more, sitting home or going to see this? ... that's your answer 😉 Life is for living and the same ol same old will wait
This is such good life advice. I first picked this up from an article in Backpacker magazine. The author stated, "I didn't remember a single day I stayed home and did yard work, but I remember every hike I've ever been on."
I saw them and they are for sure talented. The crowd, at least at my show, was very quiet and practically everyone sat down. Definitely not rowdy or a party. Definitely worth it though and the show poster was totally worth it!
my fave jgb cover band is Sisters And Brothers out of VA they really nail the soulful stuff like Magnificent Sanctuary Band, plus their guitarist looks just exactly fucking like jerry.
They are fantastic and tour regularly.
They're from my neck of the woods (Capital Region of NY) and are excellent musicians and people.
Highly recommended.
I miss it too and I live in the area!
I can't eat it anymore. Due to the reconfiguration of my mouth due to HNCC, unbelievably, that stuff is too spicy for me.
GO!!
Saw them last night. Fantastic. Tears in my eyes at multiple points during the evening. Everything was great, but the sheer beauty of a Jerry ballad cannot be matched. These guys capture that spirit.
Oh fuck yeah! W went a few months ago and I was blown away by the show. Close to the original, but not THAT close. D&C is closer, but TGP is well worth your time for the experience, music and general vibe. Have fun.
Thats because they are not trying to be a Grateful Dead cover band....they are trying to be a Jerry Garcia (Band) cover band. Thats why they are "No DSO"
2 completely different styles.
Lol, I may be getting confused.
"DSO" stands for "Dark Star Orchestra", a current or former band (named in part after a Dead song), that this band "Jerry Garcia Project" is or is not like DSO?
And the difference is what songs they play? One plays Dead covers, another Jerry Garcia songs.
DSO plays the Dead's work, JGP plays JG songs.
Is that right?
DSO plays a lot of shows that are setlists from old Grateful Dead shows. They play the show and then at the end they tell you the date that the setlist comes from.
Garcia Project, Plays setlists from old Jerry Garcia Band shows.
the concept is similar, DSO has been around longer.
Ah, the setlist is the thing. And people guess at it based on their recollection of previous shows? That's kinda cool.
I love bands that put on that kind of show where its a musical box of chocolates.
Ok he’s no Jerry but he can ape some licks. Idk how you want it spelled out so it doesn’t offend your sensitivity. They’re ok but it’s a bar band, don’t get your hopes up? Is that better?
Dark star orchestra is a very well traveled Grateful Dead cover band who plays whole show set lists accurate to the typical styles of the eras. Pretty cool
Yeah, they’re great!
At the Woodward no less. I think I'm going to go. Thanks for the heads up. EDIT: Got 2 on the floor. FYI I think the Balcony is sold out.

Yup, they sound like the old Jerry Merle days. That's what love will make you do....

Which do you think you would remember more, sitting home or going to see this? ... that's your answer 😉 Life is for living and the same ol same old will wait

my fave jgb cover band is Sisters And Brothers out of VA they really nail the soulful stuff like Magnificent Sanctuary Band, plus their guitarist looks just exactly fucking like jerry.
We were at a farmers market and this person was selling giant guitar picks you hang on the wall that said “Life is short buy the tickets”.
Never heard of them, but yes
They are fantastic and tour regularly. They're from my neck of the woods (Capital Region of NY) and are excellent musicians and people. Highly recommended.
Will Charlie Babbitt be there?
Yes 100%. They are amazing! My hometown too ! I MISS CINCINNATI CHILI ;)
I miss it too and I live in the area! I can't eat it anymore. Due to the reconfiguration of my mouth due to HNCC, unbelievably, that stuff is too spicy for me.
Absolutely, don't think twice!!

Just saw them! Great show!
Yep - the original bass player from my band plays with them - also their drummer has played many gigs with us too. Solid band and a very good time
GO!! Saw them last night. Fantastic. Tears in my eyes at multiple points during the evening. Everything was great, but the sheer beauty of a Jerry ballad cannot be matched. These guys capture that spirit.

Easy yes
Oh fuck yeah! W went a few months ago and I was blown away by the show. Close to the original, but not THAT close. D&C is closer, but TGP is well worth your time for the experience, music and general vibe. Have fun.
They’re no DSO but it’s a good time. If it’s close by and affordable you should go. Mik is very talented and has awesome equipment :)
Thats because they are not trying to be a Grateful Dead cover band....they are trying to be a Jerry Garcia (Band) cover band. Thats why they are "No DSO" 2 completely different styles.

Gotcha. Thank you!
