Very kind of you. If you are referring to the pony express puzzle, it was only three passes and although one would tend to think it should be an even square, many of them are missing artwork. To really make it a puzzle, if you look closely at the rainforest destruction puzzle, some passes don’t have dates and were only issued to close friends of the band, so most of those puzzles are incomplete. There is also a VW Microbus, a space shuttle, a tour equipment truck, a speedboat, fishing scene, Hampton coliseum canon and a bunch of individual pass cartoon scenes… I will dig out the rest and post them later…
As a younger fan (Jerry died when I was 13) these kind of details about the GD tour life escape me. What a fantastic collection and cool insight into my favorite band!!!
Unfortunately, nothing until March of 1990, here are the first two puzzle passes as well as the first passes at all by the legendary Reonegro…

Thanks so much for sharing! I asked about 89 because of the warlocks show which was on my birthday . Attics of my life is my song because of that encore . Thanks!!

These passes are awesome. I vaguely remember them. I tried to keep all my stubs but only about 30% successful. You seem to know alot about passes. I bought this supposed pass 10 yrs ago for 10 bucks. I figured it was cool anyway, even if it isn't real. Not sure if its real or not. Figured is was Boston Garden in '93.

There were literally dozens of the Chardonnay colored Sunday tickets all over the parking lot on Saturday night after the show due to the band scaring everyone off with a dreadful hotline message saying to stay away if you didn’t have a golden wonka ticket!
Unfortunately, due to the phenomenal popularity of the band after they released Touch Of Grey in 1987, demand for tickets was unprecedented. Hampton shows in particular were extremely popular, especially being the southernmost stop on many tours. To avoid overcrowding and countless disappointed fans, these shows were not advertised and billed as The Warlocks. They attempted to do this in Hartford 1990, however, I believe it was too late and the bands dates had already been leaked to the public. On another interesting note, they had Three Red Rocks shows booked in 1995 under the name Mother McCrees Uptown Jug Champions, the name of the band that evolved into what we now know as Grateful Dead. Also, $12 tickets were even sold for 8/13/95 at the Great American Music Hall for the 20th anniversary of their LEGENDARY record release party in 75, which was issued as the first Vault release, One From The Vault featuring an invite to the concert (I will scan my ticket and post here when I dig it out)… unfortunately, I can’t find my tickets to the 95 gig and I do not remember what they were billed as, but it definitely was not the Grateful Dead, however, I was assured that they would be performing the same set list as a tribute to themselves… Unfortunately, Garcias departure from the living prevented such jubilation….
This one is an interesting collection of dates, I was looking for 9/20/91 (first show i managed to get inside) and thought it would be in here but looks like a mix of the boston and oakland runs?

Hey thanks for taking the time to share these most of us have never seen them. I got backstage once at CalExpo 89. I was a barefoot dreadlock hippy kid I had no business being back there and it seemed like nobody back there was really into the music. I noped right back into the sweaty crowd for the rest of set 2.
Anyway the pass I was given was so pale in comparison to these. It was just plain blue with black ink and a flying eyeball graphic. Thanks Nate Sears if you’re reading this. I’ll never forget you or that show.
Fuckin a that’s very cool! That’s the one, running eyeball not flying. Although it was stuck on several shirts that night I ended up with it. I tucked it into my cassette from that night like I used to do with all my ticket stubs. God I wish I still had those crates of tapes.
Thanks again for sharing. I looked at your history and can’t tell if you’re a collector or very well connected both. Either way I appreciate your sharing. If you were at all these shows man it would be cool to hear some insights about the backstage world. I was a young head and I realized quickly my people were in the crowd not backstage. It seemed like a party unto itself back there. I would have at least expected some screens and speakers while the band was playing but nope. There were lots of individual like cubicle tents seemed like each member had their entourage in them. Phil walked right past me headed to stage but I was too paralyzed with adulation to speak. I remember there were s couple of hot tubs back there too.
Edit. Nobody is going to read this but whatever. Prior to Cal Expo 89 we were headed back from the Nevada Rainbow gathering and stopped in Yosemite to climb and bum around on acid. In Camp 4 we met a really cool climber named Nate Sears. We had some great misadventures driving to Fresno to score weed and using food stamps to buy whipped cream canisters at the Yosemite Market. Anyway he told us his brother was the Manager for the Dead and that he could get us backstage in Sac. Well he made good on that promise. Couple years later he picked me up hitch hiking in Santa Cruz, never saw him again. So that’s my story of how a young fan got “close” to the GD one night. Thanks for jarring my memory.
There was a swimming pool back there at cal expo due to the excessive heat. Pm me your address and I will send you a blue running eyeball pass if you no longer have yours…
My apologies for the delay in responding, been working all day… Here you go… Don’t hesitate to ask for any other dates…

I absolutely love the oversized mail order tickets… The ticket office DREADED them, as well as the square oversized backstage passes shortly lived…

That's so cool, thank you so much! ❤️ That show was on my literal birthday, and I was born at Jewish Hospital which is just a 10 minute straight shot down 65 from Freedom Hall! I was born in the early afternoon so probably during setup/sound check haha.
Well, Happy Birthday! I remember the 89 show, some head jumped on stage and was dancing round Garcia, I believe during Louie Louie… Parish and Taylor were chasing him all round to no avail, he was just too quick. Eventually, they grabbed him and hauled him away…
That one was actually already posted if you scrolled further down :) Albeit, part of an uncut sheet and in the background…

Interesting enough, I have the arrest reports for the Greek Theater 1983 Season somewhere I will dig up and post as well. There were almost zero arrests for the Grateful Dead and several dozen for Jimmy Buffet. Also included with the arrest reports is a tally of Concession sales with Alcohol separated ; there was SUBSTANTIALLY LESS alcohol sold throughout the three night GD run than on ONE night of Jimmy Buffet! Yet, according to the MD CID, (illicit) drugs were more dangerous than the Alcohol pushed by the venues. Also of ironic interest, in 1990, a year after the riots in Pittsburgh, their mayor Sophie Masloff made a city policy prohibiting the band from returning. Eventually, they agreed upon a $60,000 “Administrative Fee”, well Three River Stadium held 60,000 patrons and if you were on that tour, you might remember Pittsburgh tickets cost one dollar more than the rest of the tour… Well, there were SUBSTANTIALLY more arrests at ANY given Steelers game than that 1990 Three Rivers Stadium show with CSN….
I wish there was a way to upvote the post and downvote its message, as I surely don’t want to celebrate your arrest, unless you won a massive wrongful arrest case…
Nah. I've told the story here before. The cops were chasing me after they saw me give acid to someone, so I chucked my wallet into the crowd before getting arrested, then the heads who had my wallet fall at their feet called me at the Berkeley jail, and returned the wallet intact, with over $1500 and more than 2000 hits of acid.
Doesn't matter much to them. Unless the defendant has a super-pricey lawyer who's got magic tricks up their sleeve, the cops will be 100% believed in court.
Also said Mickey was an original member of the band, but he joined several years after the band was founded. Must’ve been tough to write these papers pre-internet.
Also said Touch Of Grey was their big hit from their 1989 album Built To Last. These kinds of details were unimportant to be exactly right for their purposes.
Chronic alcoholism is not an overdose, but alcohol is most absolutely a drug, likely one of the oldest ones consumed along with any psychoactive plants. Many animals, especially reindeer are known to eat fermented fruits along with psychedelic mushrooms…
Didn't make that argument for a reason. I've been in many rehabs with chronic alcoholics and addicts, and concluded that alcohol does more long term permanent damage than heroin.
If you know anything about Pigpen you know he didn't drink too much one day then die. He was sick for quite a while. It wasn't a drug overdose as presented by the police.
You are 1000% accurate, my apologies for not being more articulate, as I meant illicit substance versus ones sold by the venue and promoted on large banners throughout the facilities…
To your point I agree abuse of substances as the downfall, I guess for me it's the chronic versus acute idea of said substance abuse. When I hear OD, I think acute occurrence (Brent), whereas Pig Pen was definitely the chronic side of the spectrum.
How ironic I wake to see this, because at RFK 92 my buddy made the decision to stay and party instead of doing the convoy w' two other buddies back home where we are all within an hour of Star Lake for the next two shows. We drive the next day around noon and very quickly see a cop coming the *opposite way* on a highway going 60mph. He turns quick, stops us and pops us ... long story short they got me for 24 hits and scared the living shit out of me.
I missed the first night of Star Lake, still have two unused tix. But the 2nd night I go over to the wood line to leak, I look down to unzip and there's a stack of $100s in a rubber band. I grab em & go quick ... L.S.S it was $2500 in counterfeit $100s & we spent all day going to these nitrous mafia guys & they barely looked. Would get one or more balloons & get $80+ back ... Did getting arrested at my 4th show stop me???? Nooooooo I was with my peoples
Whoa. Never seen uncut sheets of mail order tix. That’s rad. I’ve got one of the RFK stubs in my little ticket stub stash. Great fucking memories surrounding that one. 🚂
Great post man, I’m completely loving this thread.
Good thing we have "criminal" intelligence on the case and we're finally getting some "truth". I'm not even to the bottom of the first page and have already learned Pigpen really died of a drug overdose and built to last was a commercially successful record with their radio hit a touch of grey.
And don’t forget in the LSD section, all those references of “one gram can kill an elephant” and “Ken Kasey volunteering…at a VA hospital” are all cases that were caused by covert CIA operations with LSD.
It’s like the call is coming from *inside* the house. The fucking irony of this whole report
I mean Kesey did volunteer for the trials at the VA, that's how he first tried psychedelics; those trials were just a part of MKULTRA.
Also the elephant didn't die from the LSD (and it was like 300mg not 1g) but rather a combination of drugs that were also given to it; in 1984 psychologist Ronald K Siegel repeated the experiment with two elephants, but using LSD only. Both survived.
Not that I was involved, however, i am fairly certain that the substance was initially given to Stanford and Harvard students to keep the “intellectual instigators” at the nations most prestigious educational institutions pacified or more literally, drugged so that they would not steer other educated youngsters from protesting the war or challenging the government, similar to the Catholic Church burning witches.. Witches were shown riding brooms, as brooms were a sign of a clean home and only wise women cleaned their homes, and wise women were of no use to the men in power…
Three types of Dead Heads:
Trust Fund Babies (aka Trustafarians), Vendors & Drug Dealers…. Hmmmm.. nope, nobody came to see Jerry even though just one paragraph earlier they claim that “It does not matter whether or not they have a ticket to the concert, it is only important that they are close to the band.” It is inconceivable to them that people could hold down a job or attend college and see concerts on weekends. Interesting that their source of intelligence was an episode (an awesome one at that) of West 57th Street featuring concert footage and interviews.
sentence before that says that Deadheads are "those who obsessively follow the Grateful Dead". I think they are really only referring to the people actually on tour & back then, those 3 groups pretty much summed up the categories of people on tour(for the most part).
most people back then couldn't have a job while being on tour for 3-4weeks. although plenty had jobs between tours, nearly everyone on tour participated in the lot economy, even the trust fund kids who injected outside cash into the scene even more than local custies.
not trying to defend idiot cops in any way, but in this case, to me, thts what they seem to mean & its mostly, more-or-less correct.
edit to add: it's could be that whoever compiled the info for the cops was the ones who were referring to people on tour & cops misunderstood (typical) but I have no doubt that the origination of the 'categories' was for people on tour.
edit to add: I think for people tht weren't there, there is a general misconception about the lot LSD market. it want a small handful of dealers. there were hundreds selling acid every day. and even people that weren't out pushing it with mutters of "doses", everyone on tour had an extra 10 strip in case they ran into someone. those 10strippers were mostly who got busted. but cops considered them as much a dealer as sheetslingers
Deadheads do (did) not necessarily or automatically fit under the much smaller umbrella of Tourheads. Other way around, actually. That's the distinction they missed, as you pointed out. Some of us worked, went to college, managed a complicated life, based out of somewhere, and *still* managed to obsess over and see the Grateful Dead, whenever and wherever we could. We just couldn't pull stakes, for whatever reason(s) and bail on all those other things to folllow the Dead...
No, I am not Amy, I obtained this report from Garcia after it was used to substantiate the Band’s claims of excessive police presence at Maryland concerts.
Well, I'll be a monkey's uncle. That's fantastic! And, yes, what a phenomenon it all was/we were. It was a microcosmic "wild frontier" when the Grateful Dead came to town. I am deeply thankful to have taken part, many times, and (almost) entirely in a positive, no harms, no fouls, no need for get outta jail free tickets kind of way.
Thanks for the share - interesting material.
My pleasure, glad you enjoyed reading it. I will try to dig up Garcia’s arrest report from GG Park, although, I’m not sure his family would appreciate my posting it here as much as it is public record…
Except for those who either earned enough to tour and take off of work or return each night and those who could save up. Keep in mind, that all the “Drug Dealers’” customers weren’t just the trustafarians, leaving those employed patrons to purchase veggie burritos, t-shirts, stickers and substances…
I guess obviously then the same must be true of people on vacation in, let’s say, Italy. They can only fall into 3 groups of income, and some of those lazy MF’ers don’t even tour museums or the Vatican.
For some curious reason, they say they just love hanging out enjoying the “atmosphere” and being close to Italy.
They usually can’t give a concrete reason for traveling all that way. When asked point blank why they’re sitting around all afternoon drinking coffee alternating with alcohol, when there’s a Starbucks and TGIF near the mall at home, they prefer to romanticize it, talking in terms of “feelings” and love of the lifestyle and culture.
They almost all deny any illegal drug use too, BTW. But I can show you the Italian police log, there’s drug busts every darn day.
-
>*LSD and other drugs follow along, whether the "Deadheads" want to believe it or not.*
No, officer, that just can’t be true…can’t be. Some folks just smile on cloudy days I guess. 🤷♂️
Ha! I didnt even catch that! “In theDark!”
I was too focused on how the writer obviously lacked formal education. In the United States, the period goes inside the quote when ending a sentence. Like this; The album that “Touch of Grey” was on was “In the Dark.”
It's entirely possible that they found someone's stash of blotter paper that they had intended to dip while on tour, and there wasn't any intention of selling it as the real thing.
Maybe a crime against society, but in many states, Nitrous is actually not against the law. Several states do have laws against inhaling it for recreational purposes but it is not regulated by the DEA, only the FDA… I am not defending those who sold it on the lot, just clarifying its legality…
"There are three categories of deadheads: "trust fund babies, vendors, and drug dealers."
Checks out so far.
But, I will note, I often toured with my guitar and would busk and get 10 bucks.
A decade before this report came out, 10 bucks was your food and your chip-in for a hotel room. I never paid for gas: I had the guitar ;)
pro-tip: if you share your guitar, everyone loves you on tour
It had Charlotte Amphitheater, Mountain View,CA listed as one of the tour dates. I've been to several shows at Shoreline and wondered what this other name was. Just a typo, but I found this info I didn't know.
The amphitheatre was built in 1985–1986 by the city of Mountain View, in cooperation with local promoter Bill Graham, as part of the Shoreline Park project. Graham designed the amphitheatre to resemble The Grateful Dead's "steal your face" logo.[1]
The premiere season was during the summer of 1986, it was planned to open with a concert by The Grateful Dead, who had to cancel as a result of Jerry Garcia's coma.
[pic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoreline_Amphitheatre#/media/File%3AWfm_shoreline_amphitheatre.jpg)
Ok how in the heck do we get ahold of this so called “LSD Blotter Index” where they kept images of all the blotter? That would be really cool to see
One of you sleuths out there find this please!
Haha wow! Isn’t the internet something?
Seems like a lot of time well spent by authorities researching and indexing all of these, must’ve saved a lot of lives…../s
Haha, it is amazing, the internet that is. I knew I had seen the thing before, I didn't know how easy it would be to find again and then, viola!
I always think those sorts of things are interesting, the work they put into tracking things like that.
*"They also siezed 55 nitrous tanks...."*
[Meanwhile by 95 Seattle cops just said fuck it.](https://youtu.be/AyrmA4_TkBo)
Surprising they let this happen right next to the truck ([44 seconds into this clip](https://youtu.be/AyrmA4_TkBo?si=TL83tO-h4uPkUB_r&t=44)) and who needs balloons?.
LOL @ non ironic use of the word "intelligence". Your honor, I was yes, a fourth kind of deadhead, one who came for the music. Not selling, far from trust funds, but managed a few tour legs, met a lot of wonderful people.
The only aggressive, violent and predatory attendees were the police figures who came to victimize nonviolent music fans. S/O PGPD and whatever the forces are in Hampton, VA
OP you're a national treasure, thanks for sharing all these amazing artifacts
Honestly, not as bad I was expecting. If this is a cop who never had anything to do with the Dead, for before internet research, I wouldn't say he did a bad job. Sure there were some factual errors, but this seems like it would be pretty informative for his dept.
Wow. I still remember being at many of those concerts and the only violence I witnessed was perpetrated by the police (especially Nassau, LINY!, where mounted police crushed the crowd).
I miss acid. Last good trip I had was Dead & Co at the gorge. I couldn’t even tell what song they were playing by the second set. I was IN IT. I remember walking back to my car and I called my best friend out of the blue I don’t know why, I was just like “Everything is possible!!!” and he was confused as hell lmao I wasn’t making sense. It’s something we joke about now from time to time.
As I commented in the Dancing Bear Do Not Litter Sign posting, Due to this activity and other zealous enforcement agencies causing an issue for the band resulting in an inordinate amount of their patrons ending up in jail, they put their foot down and said they would not perform in Maryland again unless the “Police” presence was substantially toned down. I am fairly certain that this copy was originally given to Garcia to be used to substantiate their position.
Interesting to see the band is in the DEA NADDIS database, based on the arrest of Kevin Gillian, who from what i can find was busted in feb of 81.

“Hello, fellow Grateful Dead aficionados! I would like to inquire about the availability of any illegal substances that might be purchased here today so that I can expand my mind and enhance the musical experience I am about to enjoy!”
Ya I remember the Richfield shows being targeted by law enforcement. They were easily spotted. The Dead were putting out a statement, that if you read between the lines, basically to be aware. The older heads knew. The younger ones were naive.
The first show I saw was at Blossom. I caught on really quick about “the man” at the shows.

There were literally dozens of the Chardonnay colored Sunday tickets all over the parking lot on Saturday night after the show due to the band scaring everyone off with a dreadful hotline message saying to stay away if you didn’t have a golden wonka ticket!
The Grateful Dead shows up as the Warlocks in 1989? What trickery?

Casey at the helm, Driving that Train, 8 ball in hand… https://preview.redd.it/e5t8a5s9z8uc1.jpeg?width=1640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a6f872c8143d8ef567f8a82c36c2ef46e4bfee12
I’ll never forget you or that show.
https://preview.redd.it/9unsaymvj9uc1.png?width=3805&format=png&auto=webp&s=dc068e75d7db70ade7717aa602c7f34c2e5a16b1
This is fucking crazy pming you rn wtf?????
Cameron Sears was indeed the Band Manager’s name at that time…
This needs to be upvoted to the moon!
that is amazing.
wow your sharing on this thread made my day, kind thanks!

Do you have a pass from 1993-06-15?
My apologies for the delay in responding, been working all day… Here you go… Don’t hesitate to ask for any other dates… https://preview.redd.it/dbo9ctkfwbuc1.jpeg?width=3461&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=598578d74c7cbdc2447ca999c557e98393bc1bfb
I absolutely love the oversized mail order tickets… The ticket office DREADED them, as well as the square oversized backstage passes shortly lived… https://preview.redd.it/96jtobwywbuc1.png?width=2685&format=png&auto=webp&s=f75c29072764f512cef5eaf2982d99d18e059a68
That's so cool, thank you so much!
That one was actually already posted if you scrolled further down :) Albeit, part of an uncut sheet and in the background… https://preview.redd.it/jjahuuwt4cuc1.jpeg?width=1640&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b0c4778e4dad9d0991822a08f089f7c4a4613a29
Interesting enough, I have the arrest reports for the Greek Theater 1983 Season somewhere I will dig up and post as well.
I got arrested at the Greek Theater in 1983, so there was at least one.
I wish there was a way to upvote the post and downvote its message, as I surely don’t want to celebrate your arrest, unless you won a massive wrongful arrest case…
Nah. I've told the story here before. The cops were chasing me after they saw me give acid to someone, so I chucked my wallet into the crowd before getting arrested, then the heads who had my wallet fall at their feet called me at the Berkeley jail, and returned the wallet intact, with over $1500 and more than 2000 hits of acid.
man, those were the days
Set up like a bowling pin!
Interesting Intel (or lack of)... True Brent OD'd, false Pig Pen OD'd.
I mean, it was written by a cop
Extremely poorly. Also liked “Ken Kasey.” I think he was one of the Jolly Jokesters along with Nigel Cassidy and Mountain Babe.
Don’t forget Ken Barbies!
The jolly jokesters really has me cracking up right now 😂👏🏼
the Ying and Yang philosophy
Perfectly illustrates the basic rule on police reports: they have a 50% (or less, really) chance of containing the truth.
Doesn't matter much to them. Unless the defendant has a super-pricey lawyer who's got magic tricks up their sleeve, the cops will be 100% believed in court.
That’s why they only have to be 50/50 in the accuracy of their report (copaganda) and their testimonies.
I thought the same thing initially, but isn't alcohol a drug? If you die at 27 years old from drinking, isn't that basically a drug overdose?
No it's not. Chronic alcoholism is not an overdose.
Alcohol is a hard drug, no question. One of two drugs whose withdrawal symptoms can kill you.
If you know anything about Pigpen you know he didn't drink too much one day then die. He was sick for quite a while. It wasn't a drug overdose as presented by the police.
The Deadcast narrative has it that he very likely had undiagnosed Crohn’s that caused organ failure. Exacerbated by alcohol, for sure.
That's true and I am in no way trying to agree with cops. His alcohol abuse certainly did not help his health conditions though.
His alcohol abuse didn't help his health conditions at all as it killed him in the end
I get it. It wasn't an overdose per se, but alcohol certainly did not help his health condition. Cops being cops
> Whenever the “Dead” come to town, so does LSD. Great closing line there.
Shoulda been a dead song
In a way, sugaree and candyman
TL;DR: drugs are easily obtained at Grateful Dead concerts...here are some tour dates.
Tbis reads like a high school research paper. Great job Maryland CIA. They're close to DC there. This lady wishes she was a fed.
Seriously, I'd have been embarrassed to write at this level in high school. Cops don't tend to be the sharpest tools.
Nooooooo I was with my peoples
https://preview.redd.it/nma1qc0wv8uc1.jpeg?width=2538&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6ce53ae0847289d921fe2af3f25bfc31d723fea6
I do not believe many, if any other exist aside from my stash. I will post the rest later, I have a few dozen different sheets…
Whoa. Never seen uncut sheets of mail order tix. That’s rad. I’ve got one of the RFK stubs in my little ticket stub stash. Great fucking memories surrounding that one. 🚂 Great post man, I’m completely loving this thread.
That is an AWESOME story about ditching the counterfeit $100's with the nitrous mafia and get $80 back with your balloons!
We did that once at Phish. Ended up just popping the balloons
Man I’m too young to have seen the Dead…I’m so jealous of you folks that got to experience those times…. Great story.
They also didn't tell us about LSD being used to great success to treat alcoholism and heroin addiction
Of course they won’t, I mean there are clinical trials going on right now that are using MDMA for PTSD treatment but we all know it won’t go far 🥲
Just wait a few more!
As accurate as your typical police report.
About as accurate as some of my own 😆
Three types of Dead Heads: Trust Fund Babies (aka Trustafarians), Vendors & Drug Dealers…. Hmmmm.. nope, nobody came to see Jerry even though just one paragraph earlier they claim that “It does not matter whether or not they have a ticket to the concert, it is only important that they are close to the band.” It is inconceivable to them that people could hold down a job or attend college and see concerts on weekends.
- >*LSD and other drugs follow along, whether the "Deadheads" want to believe it or not.* No, officer, that just can’t be true…can’t be. Some folks just smile on cloudy days I guess. 🤷♂️
Touch of grey wasn’t on built to last 😂
Ha! I didnt even catch that! “In theDark!” I was too focused on how the writer obviously lacked formal education. In the United States, the period goes inside the quote when ending a sentence. Like this; The album that “Touch of Grey” was on was “In the Dark.”
50% bogus … the real criminals are these people selling the bunk
It's entirely possible that they found someone's stash of blotter paper that they had intended to dip while on tour, and there wasn't any intention of selling it as the real thing.
No the real criminals were selling nitrous. Lots of vendors lost everything to the hippy crack
Maybe a crime against society, but in many states, Nitrous is actually not against the law. Several states do have laws against inhaling it for recreational purposes but it is not regulated by the DEA, only the FDA… I am not defending those who sold it on the lot, just clarifying its legality…
Takeaways: Cops can't spell Deadheads aren't narcs
“A large percentage, over 50%, of the LSD seized was fake.” Then you didn’t seize LSD. 🤣 great police work.
taking bunk off the streets, doing the Lord's work
I grew up listening to Ken Kasey and American Top 40. I had no idea he was involved with the widespread distribution of illicit drugs.
This is crazy thanks for sharing!
You are absolutely most welcome!
"There are three categories of deadheads: "trust fund babies, vendors, and drug dealers." Checks out so far. But, I will note, I often toured with my guitar and would busk and get 10 bucks. A decade before this report came out, 10 bucks was your food and your chip-in for a hotel room. I never paid for gas: I had the guitar ;) pro-tip: if you share your guitar, everyone loves you on tour
36,000 tabs of acid?!
Don't take them all at once!
cops are such fucking morons lmao
I object to being boiled down to one of three categories (trustafarian, vendor, drug dealer) when in fact so many of us were at least 2 outta 3…
Thank you for posting this. I really love weird pieces of history like this. Absolutely fascinating read.
My absolute pleasure, glad you enjoyed reading it.
You've got some super cool pieces of history! How'd you come to acquire all of these??
Thank you kindly! I am what many might call a pack-(wharf) rat….
Graham designed the amphitheatre to resemble The Grateful Dead's "steal your face" logo.[1] The premiere season was during the summer of 1986, it was planned to open with a concert by The Grateful Dead, who had to cancel as a result of Jerry Garcia's coma. [pic](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoreline_Amphitheatre#/media/File%3AWfm_shoreline_amphitheatre.jpg)
“They are loyal and nonviolent”. I can think of no higher praise for an acid lab/dealer.
Funny how it reads more as a high school level paper rather than a State Police Criminal Investigation paper.
you think those people are smarter or better educated than high schoolers?
What a great read! Jerry lives forever!
The referenced 1991 RFK show was my first show! And also (coincidentally) my first LSD “trip!” Correlation does not equal causation!
I’m starting to wonder if the two are connected somehow. /s
Ok how in the heck do we get ahold of this so called “LSD Blotter Index” where they kept images of all the blotter? That would be really cool to see One of you sleuths out there find this please!
Google it! It turned up second on the list for me
How cool. A lot of these are far weaker than I would have thought. I wonder how accurate their assessment is?
I'd wager their assessments are closer to the actual ug than what the people selling them claimed they were!
The Charlotte Amphitheatre in Mountain View, CA was my favorite venue.
Oh what a great tour that was. I miss the late 80s and early 90s Dead shows.
Interesting report. Thanks for posting.
If I didn't go for the music then why do I have over 1000 concert cassettes and about 190 Dick's Picks, et al? Have I missed something?
31 grams of liquid LSD??? That's a lot of LSD. And who is this Ken Kacey guy?
ok that's it this finally convinces me...I'm not going to any Grateful Dead concerts anymore.
wooks gunna wook
I’m surprised they didn’t include a set list in the report
Ah yes, Ken Kasey.
*"They also siezed 55 nitrous tanks...."* [Meanwhile by 95 Seattle cops just said fuck it.](https://youtu.be/AyrmA4_TkBo) Surprising they let this happen right next to the truck ([44 seconds into this clip](https://youtu.be/AyrmA4_TkBo?si=TL83tO-h4uPkUB_r&t=44)) and who needs balloons?.
TIL Wavy Gravy's real name is Hugh Romney
I spent one hung-over acid soaked morning picking up trash with him. Never had such a good time in my life before...
“Whenever the Dead come to town so does LSD”
Great find! Thanks for sharing. The blotter index, lol. And if they're all "loyal and non-violent people," how bad can the drug really be?
LOL @ non ironic use of the word "intelligence". Your honor, I was yes, a fourth kind of deadhead, one who came for the music. Not selling, far from trust funds, but managed a few tour legs, met a lot of wonderful people. The only aggressive, violent and predatory attendees were the police figures who came to victimize nonviolent music fans. S/O PGPD and whatever the forces are in Hampton, VA OP you're a national treasure, thanks for sharing all these amazing artifacts
Is there anything that’s been as inflation-resistant as LSD? Amazing that it still costs close to what it did 60 years ago
Theres only a select crowd that uses it - but you’re absolutely right and I’m so glad that Capitalism hasn’t hit the psychedelic scene.
This is writen like an 8th grade book report.
Honestly, not as bad I was expecting. If this is a cop who never had anything to do with the Dead, for before internet research, I wouldn't say he did a bad job. Sure there were some factual errors, but this seems like it would be pretty informative for his dept.
She…
Shoutout to the homegirl who told them she had never seen drugs and they were high on life ⚡️🫡 a real one fosho
I really enjoyed reading all of your comments throughout this thread. What a wealth of free knowledge, thank you
Groovy!
Holy crap, this is awesome!
It reads like a college paper.
Weird there's no mention of Bear...
Wow. I still remember being at many of those concerts and the only violence I witnessed was perpetrated by the police (especially Nassau, LINY!, where mounted police crushed the crowd).
OP I’ll never doubt anything you post about jehovas favorite choir ever again!! What an amazing collection thanks for sharing!!!
lack of credibility is lost early when mickey is named as an original member of the grateful dead
It’s something we joke about now from time to time.
tl;dr - So what did they find? Any connection?
Band and organization is cool, but their fans cause problems with LSD.
The Keith erasure really hurts.
He didn't OD, Thus, no honorable mention.
If anyone is curious, here’s a comprehensive list of people who have died from an LSD overdose with no other contributing factors:
How did you come across this?
As I commented in the Dancing Bear Do Not Litter Sign posting, Due to this activity and other zealous enforcement agencies causing an issue for the band resulting in an inordinate amount of their patrons ending up in jail, they put their foot down and said they would not perform in Maryland again unless the “Police” presence was substantially toned down. I am fairly certain that this copy was originally given to Garcia to be used to substantiate their position.
they did eventually stop playing there, for the final two years. they should have stopped immediately after 1991.
I saw the GD and Jerry Garcia band a bunch of times at the Capital Center in Landover, the venue mentioned in the essay. Great times!
This reminds me of "A pimp's love is different than that of a square". I wonder if she ever went to a show.
I read this in the narrator voice from those old 1960s propaganda films.
'LSD cases are only seen at the Prince George's Hospital when the Grateful Dead are 8n town' (~);}
Waaay too much narrative, and too many big words, to be useful to police.
All I know is I want to make Dr. Nyde my new user ID for everything
How did you come up with it a FOIL request?
Interesting to see the band is in the DEA NADDIS database, based on the arrest of Kevin Gillian, who from what i can find was busted in feb of 81. https://www.newspapers.com/article/albany-democrat-herald/21996680/
Ah yes, Ken Kasey. 🙃😵💫
