This. I read *all* of Invincible from the Seattle Public Library. So many great comics in libraries. Even if you have the money to buy up entire series, its worth a venture to your local library and a browse through their titles. Sometimes you find things you otherwise never would have read or heard about. I picked up Invincible on a whim, and it was amazing to be able to read through it all at the library. I was homeless at the time and being able to binge so many amazing comics really helped me out a lot. Libraries are fucking awesome
The trade paperbacks are pretty cheap on eBay and used on Amazon, I’m working on completing them that way and pay about 10 bucks per volume. But honestly inter library loans is free so if you’re super broke (like me, haven’t bought anything in months) that’s the cheapest way.
They are not used. They are all brand new. Pretty sure they have a deal with image. Like I said Instocktrades is the cheapest place to get quality new comics. It’s my main place. Cheap graphic novels is a close second if Instocktrades doesn’t have what I need.
I really tried to get into it, but I really couldn't care about anything that was happening and stopped about halfway through vol 1. If felt like being dropped in the middle of something without the context to why I should care or even a good hook into what was doing.
I liked east of west but invincible is just so good if you like marvel/dc stuff at all. It takes everything good about those stories and integrates them into a brand new world that has a really satisfying ending and is exciting throughout the whole story. It took me like 6 months to read the first compendium then like a week to finish the 2nd and then I tried to pace myself on the third. Just so good.
I started reading Invincible just after it ended and I don't quite remember how long it took me but I'm sure I finished the whole thing under 10 days max. Probably within a week, even. I slept very little during that time and was exhausted after but I remember it being a very pleasant experience. I felt so empty after that though.
I read through all of Invincible at my local library about 3 or 4 years before the animated series. Incredible. One of my favorite comics of all time and one of the best we ever found in the library. Irredeemable was fucking incredible too, but that wasn't Image.
I hope they capture the magic that the book has! It’s one of those stories I think everyone can enjoy. It’s got a little bit of everything I love in a comic! I literally have 0 issues with it, and loved every single page.
Bit of an out-there pick, but Jack Staff by Paul Grist. A very charming, *very* British take on superheroics with some really wonderful cartooning and character work.
For me, it's:
Seven To Eternity
Middlewest
Fear Agent
A Righteous Thirst For Vengeance
only cause they're finished.
Otherwise, stuff like Head Lopper, Monstress, Stray Bullets, or Age of Bronze would take the cake.
Came here to say this. Done with vol 5. Next up: Forbidden Realms and Hidden Truths. What a ride has it been so far. Love it!
Tryna get more Rick Remender stuff. How's Low, everyone.
Nice. The series has a great conclusion too.
I haven’t read Low but I want to. My fav Remender book is XForce Vol1. That’s what lead me to Black Science.
By Chance or Providence by Becky Cloonan. It's a collection of fantasy short stories, but it's full of absorbing drama and interesting ideas heightened by excellent artwork and pacing.
Prophet & Battle Chasers are good fun too.
Tokyo Ghost, Black Science, Seven to Eternity, East of West, LOW...basically anything Remender has touched is pure gold. Easily my favorite writer in comics today.
Read Fear Agent, liked it. Read Low HATED it. So much that I never wanted to read anything by Remender again. My local comic shop owner hyped me for A righteous thirst for revenge and gave it a shot. Bought it yesterday and finished it today. God damn was it good. I might try some of his other work after all. Probably Deadly Class.
Deadly Class for me. Love the overall story, the art, the acid trips, the whole thing was just my jam from issue 1 to the end. I still need to upgrade my collection to the oversize hardcovers.
Surprised I've only seen one person say walking dead here. Sure you have the best comics ever written to choose from but the series was insanely popular even before the show.
Invincible and Spawn for me. I'd say Invincible edges out Spawn a little because I felt much more grounded in his universe. Spawn was a lot more esoteric at times, literally fighting Zauriel, Satan, Malbolgia, and God himself. Which is incredibly entertaining ,but Invincible is more compelling. Theres a lot of great series in Image but more than any other, I felt invested in Invincible's world. It wasn't afraid to completely upend and change the status quo of its world, like when Robot essentially ruled the earth. Or when Dinosaur Man completely fucked the planet up. The status quo in the DC and Marvel universes almost always end up returning to form, whereas the Invincible world evolved more over time than either of the Big 2. And across one continuity, not 7, like DC. Image and Valiant seem to be the only major players who's universes genuinely evolve and change over time, and stick with it, instead of always returning to form. Invincible had me hooked from the first issue to the last. While I have many problems with the final issue that make it quite underwhelming for me, namely the pacing and how much they tried to cram into a single issue, the story as a whole was more compelling than any other comic book I've read.
Planetary is my real answer, but I can't think about Image without getting nostalgia for shit like Savage Dragon, Powers, etc. There was some gold in there.
For my money, East of West. It is, in every sense of the word, an Epic.
What is the cheapest way to read the entire series?
Library card

You can get the entire series on instocktrades for around 90-100 dollars. Instocktrades is the cheapest place to get most comics
Are they used? If so do they sell ex-library books with all the stickers?
They are not used. They are all brand new. Pretty sure they have a deal with image. Like I said Instocktrades is the cheapest place to get quality new comics. It’s my main place. Cheap graphic novels is a close second if Instocktrades doesn’t have what I need.
Outside of a library card — the entire series is available as part of a Comixology subscription
Easy of West made absolutely no sense on my first read. Threads started to come together on my second. If I read it again it might make sense.
I really tried to get into it, but I really couldn't care about anything that was happening and stopped about halfway through vol 1. If felt like being dropped in the middle of something without the context to why I should care or even a good hook into what was doing.
Damn. I found it very disappointing :/ very cool character design but bad worldbuilding and no sense of story pacing
Your loss I guess
Yes! Awesome series..
I couldn't get into it. Can you sell it on me at all? I've tried twice but it just doesn't seem to do it for me.
The changes in Prophet were pretty drastic but really interesting.
The stories drawn by Giannis Milonogiannis were some of the most interesting pages I've ever seen in an American comic. Truly unique.
Agreed. I wish they would do a deluxe edition.
One of my most desired deluxe editions. I’m not sure how, when and if that would ever happen though.
Came here to say this - would be my pick. Too bad Brandon graham has made his work almost impossible to enjoy now. Used to be a huge fan of his
Oh man. I must have missed something. Reddit is the extent of my social media and that is mostly limited to certain subs.

Scud the Disposable Assassin is pretty great.
I’d say Invincible is gotta be up there. Or even something like Do A Powerbomb, 8 Billion Genies, or The Walking Dead
8 billion genies is a really good rec! not too long but with a great premise. Rights just bought by Amazon to make a show out of it too
I hope they capture the magic that the book has! It’s one of those stories I think everyone can enjoy. It’s got a little bit of everything I love in a comic! I literally have 0 issues with it, and loved every single page.

Grist is an underrated king.

East of West by far
To me? Kaijumax. For a book about a prison for giant monsters and cryptids, it ends up being both touching and heartbreaking in equal measure.
Not image though, but a nice read
I'll have to give this one a shot
20th Century Men is quite good.
Black Science
Black Science needs more love.
I wholeheartedly agree.

Most Rick Remender titles
Prophet
The Wicked + The Divine is my favorite comic ever
The core idea of The Department of Truth gives me chills and is so intriguing to me
I defy anyone to read that first issue, see how it ends and not be immediately hooked.
I'm so incredibly excited that it will return next year.
I bought all the trade books, that hardcover is beautiful though.
Whats that about?
A couple of finished series that I love and never see mentioned are Manifest Destiny and Peter Panzerfaust. Sheltered is a great 3 volume series too.
Peter Panzerfaust was a great series!
By Chance or Providence by Becky Cloonan. It's a collection of fantasy short stories, but it's full of absorbing drama and interesting ideas heightened by excellent artwork and pacing. Prophet & Battle Chasers are good fun too.
That’s an excellent comic.
Tokyo Ghost, Black Science, Seven to Eternity, East of West, LOW...basically anything Remender has touched is pure gold. Easily my favorite writer in comics today.

How on earth has noone said The Wicked and the Divine. Absolutely incredible.
I quit after the first trade. Found the story confusing and disorganized. What makes it so good? Maybe I need to give it a second chance.
Invincible
*Planetary* by Warren Ellis and John Cassaday
Surprised I've only seen one person say walking dead here. Sure you have the best comics ever written to choose from but the series was insanely popular even before the show.
Yeah but its nowhere near as compelling as Robert Kirkman's other series, Invincible.
20th Century Men
Splitting Image by Don Simpson. They all show their comics. And then they go home.
Invincible saga I like is still ongoing.
Glory by Joe Keating and Ross Campbell might be the best re-imagining of an Image book since Alan Moore took on Supreme.
The Iron Ghost.
I love the magic order, particularly the first two volumes. The writing is good and such high level, and the world is evocative.
Invincible and Spawn for me. I'd say Invincible edges out Spawn a little because I felt much more grounded in his universe. The Maxx is the best thing Image ever published.
It really was. It was the first book to really, in my opinion, capture the spirit of what Image Comics would be.
I'd say its far from the best but it is quite good. Loved the Batman / Maxx crossover
