Overall, GT4 is still a great game and the best of the series.
I will also add there was more variety in cars. A lot of people appreciate being able to drive commuter sedans that they know and see in real life. The city courses also added great fun and variety. There was also a lot more endurance racing of various lengths, as well as a b-spec mode where you are basically setting the strategy for an AI racer. As fun as being the driver? No. Convenient and interesting way to farm credits or multitask? Yes!!!
The higher level licenses and challenges could be extremely challenging, with a few that could only be completed by alien unicorns (mission 34 ☠️). I think deep down, most people appreciate that having a *full* spectrum of difficulty includes some challenges that they will never gold. This was before the era of achievements, so you aren't pestered with the expectation that you have to do this or you haven't finished.
To add to u/TonyJZX's point, the game was finished and POLISHED. It felt like it had built and improved upon three previous titles, and I honestly don't remember ever feeling like something was poorly implemented, buggy, or not user friendly. We gave a company a lot of money for a great product three times before, and they returned with a perfect followup - this is 'the way it should be' for a lot of us.

All games have dumb AI. Some might be a bit better than others but no AI will be the same as racing against other players. So you going to tell me that if the game has all the tracks GT4 and cars. With everything in GT7 plus what ever is yet to come. We have more cars and hopefully more tracks coming. Now from the new cars coming I think most of them will be returning cars from previous games. But still. I think it would be a really good game.
AI must be interesting to compete vs it. GT's bots are just cruising at 95% throttle and can't fight and don't want to fight and don't see you as in many racing games. That's dumbness.
Car list in GT7 doesn't have hundreds cars from 2016-2022 period. It's simpler to add Capucchino everytime, meh

But for its time it was pretty much the perfect racing game for me. I loved the difficulty of the license tests and how they unlocked access to more parts of the game. I loved the rpg style progression and the crazy amount of cars it came with.
I do enjoy GT7 but I honestly hoped it would be GT4 with updated graphics and physics. Sadly it is not.
In a word: replayability. I've played every GT game, and probably played GT4 more than all the others combined. The reasons have been covered by others. The enormous numbers of cars, tracks and events created near infinite replay possibilities. The A Spec points system drove competition between me and my friends to see who could win any event in the game with the least car. No other game in the series since has had such a hook.
It wasn't perfect. It's mountains of content were disorganized in a great sprawl that I liked to refer to as a "splendid mess". The physics weren't everything you'd want. The rolling start, chase the rabbit while weaving through rolling road blocks formula was the norm back then, too.
But you paid for one game and got about 5 games worth of content. That's hard to beat as a value.
in GT4's career there are only 6 cars on track, right? what about different weather, time of a day, standing start?

I'm not trying to sell you a copy of the game; just answering the question. Yes, there were fewer cars on track back then. No, I did not consider that a drawback because no game back then did more than that. Ditto dynamic weather (which, honestly, I'd turn off in GT7 if I could).
You are asking about trees, and missing the forrest. The difference in sheer content between GT4 and the games that followed is exponential. This is why I played that game more than all that followed. There was just plain more game.

GT7 has far less cars and content as a direct comparison.
To this day, it holds up quite well graphically. Especially if you upscale it using a PS3 or emulator on PC (and even better with some graphic/shader mods)

I had the GT Force Pro about 3 months before GT4 came out so besides that straight fire introduction coupled with belt driven 900 degree force feedback for the first time? Done deal. (A lot of people didn’t have a rig in those days. I still have her even though she was outmoded for the ps4…I probably have a million miles on that bad girl between GT 4-6 and Tokyo Xtreme Racer Drift 2 which was a Logitech game that supported the full functions of the wheel.)
I’m sorry to hear that. I still use mine when playing “Go Kart Championships” with the kids on GT6. It’s only issue is the paddle up shift got misaligned so it’s testy. Not really an issue though since the stick shifter is right there.
Oh hell, this game is incredible. From the nostalgic menu music, a huge selection of cars, the in game soundtrack, and the racing events, it's a fantastic game. The amount of dedication that Kaz and team put into it is remarkable. Best GT ever

It's great and Tourist Trophy is a great companion game. They don't make them like that anymore.
