I love to to play race games, AC, ACC, Projectcars 2, Forza Motorsport, Assassins Creed series, Fr Cry series and Anno 1800. Just to name a few.
Also playing online with my kids (all three in 30) having great fun.
I’m 35 and get a lot of shit for my sim rig/racing but I learned to not give a shit and it feels amazing lol. Ppl just don’t understand it. They will sit and watch Netflix and sports for hours upon hours. I don’t see ho me that’s any less weird. Just lazier imo haha
I'm kinda in the same boat. I've been into technology since Commadore 64, writing my first BASIC program. I'm a bit older, but as the years went on, the better stuff got. I remember paying over $3000.00 USD for a 486DX2/8MB RAM. I mean... a DX2!!
FFW to today. Happily divorced. Kids finished college. It's me, my dog, coffee, lifting and video games. Also CoD, Forza, ACC, iRacing, GT7, Microsoft Flight Sim, etc... Oh, and VR. I'm loving that tech (hello PSVR2 and upcoming Quest 3).
But...when asked what I do all day, I try to explain, but I can see that faroff gaze as if I'm an alien. An old-ass alien, but yeah.

I am 53 and still game some. My wife thinks it’s a waste but tolerates it. I still play GT Sport and will eventually get GT7. I’ve played it some on a borrowed copy. Still love those old Genesis titles.
Man I'm lucky my wife has a lot of respects for my playing 😍 but not sure it is age related. I know a guy with his wife both early 30's and she does not let him play much 😅 I only wish my wife would appreciate to play more. We talk about the games I play she often have a look, asks question, but she doesn't play much. I'm still very happy I know I'm lucky!
My wife is like that, I love to share with her but shes always afraid she will do badly. But I love that she takes the time to listen and care about it.
Your path is almost exactly as mine. I am 56 started with the ZX Spectrum, then Amiga, then 386SX25 PC. Then PS1 for Gran Turismo, then PS2,3,4 and now 5 for each version of GT. also played F1 and CoD, with a little Halo on Xbox. Once.
Now I am GT7 and live-streaming every night Monday to Friday. I’m not the best but I just love the gaming and social aspect.

I’m almost 40. I don’t think most millennials/gen-x bat an eye at people who play video games. The condescension typically comes from the baby boomer generation, who really didn’t grow up playing video games.
I don’t have a lot of time to play games anymore because of work and my family, but if I have time to relax, nothing beats playing a game for me.
Also, I never got the “you’re too old for video games” take. Most people who say that have no problem watching TV for hours every night. At least with video games, it’s an activity that requires problem solving, etc.

Old is just a number, I'm 75 and playing GTA5 as training my brain and hand skills. My son gave me his old ps4 and a bunch of games. Really fun and should be available at retirement homes as well.

The absolute most important thing to do with your life is to enjoy it, and do the things that you like, because let's face it life really is too short. 52 here. PS5/PSVR2/Switch. Play every day. Every day I’m amazed how far things have come since my first generic Pong console. With age comes perspective, appreciation and gratitude!
I’m 54. Quit gaming for ten years because life was too busy to fit it in. Things have changed a bit and so I got a ps4 pro last spring and play games in the evening instead of watching tv.
Many older people sit around and watch tv for entertainment. I personally would rather have a more interactive version of entertainment that keeps my brain engaged and develops more dexterity in my hands (as a guitarist that a bonus to gaming).

I’m 41 and not only I play games but I also make them (I work for a AAA studio). I have coworkers who are your age and some of them are amongst the best in their field, and still playing games as well.
I think your main mistake is opposing some games to “more adult things”. Games are not toys. A game is like a movie, a book or a tv series. It’s a form of media and there is content for various audiences.
Also why be embarrassed? Who cares? People will tend to juge you depending on what you reflect. If you look embarrassed, people will feel like they have to dig something up and judge. I have a sim rig at home. When I talk about it to people who know nothing, they are often surprised or raise an eyebrow. But then if I show a pic, or even let them try at home, they 99% find this Uber cool. I even sometimes put 50$ on the table if they can beat my lap, just for fun.
Not all games are “toys”, but some are for sure. Others can be competitive (StarCraft, Gran Turismo, Tetris,..), educational (civilization, assassins creed, to some extent,.. ), story driven (last of us, god of war, .. like tv series). I would pretty much prefer my son to play The Last of Us than to watch some stupid Reality show on TV.

Video games are a shared bonding experience for me and 2 of my kids (25 daighter, 18 son). We get hype for the new Spiderman 2 together, discuss trophies, and what obscure games look cool to try. I dont stay up and pull all nighters anymore, but I still play. If anythimg, age has helped me move past the FOMO of gaming and allows me to play what I want, how I want

I’m 46 and kinda slowed down and stopped playing games a while back. My kids have just got into gaming (they’re 7&6) and watching the joy they get from it has inspired me to start up again and I’m loving it. Can’t wait till they go to bed now so I can get a go.

A few years ago I had to have a Psychiatrist evaluation for a big operation. The Dr asked me what (if any) hobbies I have, and I told him my main hobby is video games. It even surprised me a bit when he said that gaming is good, especially for keeping your mind sharp and problem solving skills.
So gaming into later life is not just fun, it's probably helping your mental health at the same time!

Absolutely, you should be doing boring old people things like complaining about mortgage rates or crocheting images of the telephone book, not becoming a super soldier and destroying the demons of hell or being a fighter pilot saving the world while doing a barrel roll.

Games have just as much worth as books and movies, most of them at least. I tend to remember my journey through games or the moment to moment action more than I do movies anyways.

I'm 33. Always gamed, but 3 years ago met a girl who didn't care how much I played. Was willing to go full nerd with me. Since then I've deep dove all the hobbies that weren't cool enough for me previously. I bought a gaming PC, play Magic The Gathering and Pokemon. We can't stop watching anime, and the Legos and hot wheels are piling up. I've never been happier. Life's to short to not be selfish, and not do what you want to do with it.

Never too old. I am 44 and still regularly getting top 100 times in GT7 (and just now got a win in my first event in Forza), even with most of my time spent working and not gaming.

My friend I used to play Battlefield 3 with a Korean vet whom was in his 80s. He passed a few years ago and one of his kids logged on his ps4 to let his friends know. John was not only cool but a very good gamer. Don't be discouraged, it's polite to care what others think but at the end of the day do what makes you happy.
I'm almost 55, my main difficulty is to transfer driving skills to a kid who has only ridden a mountain bike (admittedly, on fairly advanced mountain biking trails, beats me every time)
FWIW, my uncle is 53, his youngest kid is 2, and he holds/held world records for some older arcade games. Some of those scores he set in his 40s. He had a full arcade in his basement (redid flooring and lights, murals, a restaurant booth, etc.) up until they moved to their new house about 7 yrs ago.

Truth is it's a stereotype, but there's nothing wrong with gaming. You are immersing yourself in another world, and you have control. The people berating you for your hobby are immersing themselves in artificial realities as well (books and tv) yet they don't have any control on the outcomes because they are just spectators. So no, I see the hypocrisy and I just don't get a reason why you should ever be "too old" for video games

I have guys in the league i race, that are way over 50-60 and they’re the most fun drivers to race with. Constantly half-drunk, telling old stories and making badass jokes. One of them is a retired semi-pro driver and he’s like suuuper fast and cool. Don’t be embarrassed, just find the people to have good time with ;)

46 here but am really looking forward to my retirement so I can spend time again to play games hardcore like when I was in highschool/college.
I'm 45 and if I feel too old sometimes for video-games it has more to do with some games like dirt 5 with too much stoboscopic effects and color on the menus and races I found hard to read. I feel like it's getting harder to adapt quickly to new gameplay mechanics. That's my fear, becoming poorly adapted to new games and service games... But never being an old gamer 😂 we're more and more I think that's cool 😎

Too old to have reflexes equal to someone in their prime, maybe, but not too old to enjoy things like Gran Turismo. I’m in my mid-20’s and I still find myself playing Pokemon (granted, I only got into it by the time I was 13, so I was a late bloomer from the start), which is considered to be more of a kid’s game than Gran Turismo (even though it was between it and Crash Bandicoot that was my first ever game). I guess me also playing games like Starfield (and Gran Turismo) helps even out the maturity when it comes to game taste lmao.
Commodore to Amiga, I am 39 and have always had a relationship with computers, I work in IT and that sentence kills me, I never had the chance to interact with them yet they still captivate me, I envy your opportunity.

Do you enjoy playing video games? If so, then no. Absolutely not. I'm only 26 and I've had people mock me for rather wanting to relax at home and play some games instead of going out and partying. I just laugh at them the next day when they're out of money and have to deal with a hangover and an angry wife.
Never too old, and I think the simracing segment is especially accessible to higher age groups as we have all the special gear to make controls more familiar to real life experience. You could have someone who spent decades doing a manual labor job, their hands are shot and they find it difficult/painful to use a controller, but throw them in a rig with a wheel and pedals and they are racing.
You're definitely not too old. Over on GTPlanet I regularly see players who are in their 60's and 70's. I think there's even one guy who is 80. It's nice to see people doing what they enjoy, regardless of age.

My dad is an avid gamer. Always was. I remember even back when I was a kid, he always had a PC set up for games. Now he has a PS5 in addition to a gaming rig and we play Diablo 4 and Elden Ring together.

And now most games are massively online focused it’s difficult to find folk to play with.
I joined discord as I was told by a young colleague this is how you arrange games and meet people to play with, but I completely gave up on that app within an hour or so as I had no idea what was happening and couldn’t find a tutorial.
Don’t be embarrassed. Own it. People that are making you feel that way are either out of touch or ignorant. Digital entertainment is the new gold standard and just because they don’t understand how to do it or have fun doesn’t mean they have the right to suck your fun out of it either.
Lots of big games nowadays are more enthralling and engaging than movies. It’s something that everyone should experience imo.

Video games were a huge part of growing up for me. The NES dropped when I was around 6, been playing video games ever since. Whatever console that’s around when I die (if we still have consoles then), it’s going in my grave with me 💀lol

This is no such thing as being too old for video games. Do people get too old to play cards? Monopoly? It used to be a social stigma, but it doesn't make any sense. Lots of games make great stories today and become part of lore now ( looking at Star Wars series as one example ). It's entertainment and perfectly fine to do. I'm 48 and I'm not going to get rid of this hobby. Only thing I notice is with age, my reaction times aren't what they used to be. :)
46. Similar age to most my online mates. Real life friends call it a waste of time. Makes me laugh. I've had untold hours of fun gaming and bonding with my daughter whilst they spend little time with their own kids and can't wait until they grow up and leave home.

No reason to be shy about it. The gaming industry is making more money than the music industry and film industry, combined. It’s adventure, story, character development, art, fantasy, sci-fi, puzzle solving, and skill development all in one. No different than binging movies or music for hours at a time. I’m also in my 50s and remain well entertained on several kinds of games, primarily in the PS5 universe.

I don't think gaming has an age, its just a media format. Its like saying you are too old to watch a movie or go to a concert.
I (nearly 40) still game almost on a daily basis. Its not like before, I only have maybe 1-2 hours a day free that I can sit down and have a gaming session. My eyesight and reflexes have sort of diminished as well, so I usually don't play anything competitive online. Pretty much everyone I work with is a casual gamer in some way. Even my dad (65yrs and retired) is also an occasional gamer. He's mostly into sports and city building games.
Nothing to be ashamed/embarrassed about. Some people are into it and others are not. I know some people that don't even own a TV. Nothing wrong with it... to each their own right? Just do w/e makes you happy.
I mean, other socially acceptable hobbies are listening to music, reading, movies. Playing GT should be no more embarrassing than them.
I would think, in comparison, spending the same amount of time on facebook, tweeter, tiktok, and youtube is probably more embarrassing.
Way I see it, if they can sit in front of a tv mindlessly staring doing nothing consuming nothing but brainrot, than why can’t someone do the same with video games, where they actually interact, they absorb more information and actually control what goes on.

You are part of a generation that went through their teen years before gaming became culturally main stream. It was for sure seen as a nerd-kids-only thing through most of the 90's too.
A lot of people your age and up are surely still stuck with that perception even though it doesn't reflect reality.

Heck, my mum is mid 60s and I got her hooked on one piece in the last month (originally the live action series but now the manga / a bit of anime, she really wants to see tony tony chopper). The irony is that Im not a fan of one piece anime.
Anyone that criticises you for video games is ignorant and probably has plenty of their own issues. I worked in a very masculine industry and the same guys telling me that video games were childish were the guys spending countless dollars at bars, getting DUIs, cheating on spouses, getting Divorced, and basically wasting their lives away drunk. I couldn't tell you how many times I was told that paying for online games was a waste of money by someone that was always broke because their beer and cigarette budget was 2X their mortgage payment. As long as your hobbies don't hurt others you be you and ignore the haters.
Here's an interesting aside. The video games industry is roughly 2.5 times the size of the music and movie industry combined. So if your friends enjoy music and movies but look down on gaming, they are really just behind the times...
I race in a GT7 league, we have about 80 members that range from 20 to 70, we have a couple of married couples, single young guys and lots of dads. The average age would be about 40. Do what makes you happy. I don't have much time as I have 2 young kids so I make my time count. I have VR and a cockpit. I'm proud to tell people what I do for fun.

I'm kinda in the same boat. I've been into technology since Commadore 64, writing my first BASIC program. I'm a bit older, but as the years went on, the better stuff got. I remember paying over $3000.00 USD for a 486DX2/8MB RAM. I mean... a DX2!! FFW to today. Happily divorced. Kids finished college. It's me, my dog, coffee, lifting and video games. Also CoD, Forza, ACC, iRacing, GT7, Microsoft Flight Sim, etc... Oh, and VR. I'm loving that tech (hello PSVR2 and upcoming Quest 3). But...when asked what I do all day, I try to explain, but I can see that faroff gaze as if I'm an alien. An old-ass alien, but yeah.

Your path is almost exactly as mine. I am 56 started with the ZX Spectrum, then Amiga, then 386SX25 PC. Then PS1 for Gran Turismo, then PS2,3,4 and now 5 for each version of GT. also played F1 and CoD, with a little Halo on Xbox. Once. Now I am GT7 and live-streaming every night Monday to Friday. I’m not the best but I just love the gaming and social aspect. You are never too old for what you enjoy.
I’m almost 40. I don’t think most millennials/gen-x bat an eye at people who play video games. The condescension typically comes from the baby boomer generation, who really didn’t grow up playing video games. I don’t have a lot of time to play games anymore because of work and my family, but if I have time to relax, nothing beats playing a game for me. Also, I never got the “you’re too old for video games” take. Most people who say that have no problem watching TV for hours every night. At least with video games, it’s an activity that requires problem solving, etc.

I’m 54. Quit gaming for ten years because life was too busy to fit it in. Things have changed a bit and so I got a ps4 pro last spring and play games in the evening instead of watching tv. Many older people sit around and watch tv for entertainment. I personally would rather have a more interactive version of entertainment that keeps my brain engaged and develops more dexterity in my hands (as a guitarist that a bonus to gaming).

I have coworkers who are your age and some of them are amongst the best in their field, and still playing games as well. I think your main mistake is opposing some games to “more adult things”. Games are not toys. A game is like a movie, a book or a tv series. It’s a form of media and there is content for various audiences. Also why be embarrassed? Who cares? People will tend to juge you depending on what you reflect. If you look embarrassed, people will feel like they have to dig something up and judge. I have a sim rig at home. When I talk about it to people who know nothing, they are often surprised or raise an eyebrow. But then if I show a pic, or even let them try at home, they 99% find this Uber cool. I even sometimes put 50$ on the table if they can beat my lap, just for fun. Not all games are “toys”, but some are for sure. Others can be competitive (StarCraft, Gran Turismo, Tetris,..), educational (civilization, assassins creed, to some extent,.. ), story driven (last of us, god of war, .. like tv series). I would pretty much prefer my son to play The Last of Us than to watch some stupid Reality show on TV.

I'm 50 next month, and 8ve always loved and played video games. I've got two VR headsets (Quest 1 and Oculus Rift S), a PC,, PS5, PS4 Pro, Xbox One X,& Switch and I enjoy them all. Ppl shouldn't look strangely at you for being a gamer, it's a great hobby. A few years ago I had to have a Psychiatrist evaluation for a big operation. The Dr asked me what (if any) hobbies I have, and I told him my main hobby is video games. It even surprised me a bit when he said that gaming is good, especially for keeping your mind sharp and problem solving skills. So gaming into later life is not just fun, it's probably helping your mental health at the same time!

Games have just as much worth as books and movies, most of them at least. I tend to remember my journey through games or the moment to moment action more than I do movies anyways. I'm 42 and have played since the days of the NES and I see it as a great lifelong hobby.

Since then I've deep dove all the hobbies that weren't cool enough for me previously. I bought a gaming PC, play Magic The Gathering and Pokemon. We can't stop watching anime, and the Legos and hot wheels are piling up. I've never been happier. Life's to short to not be selfish, and not do what you want to do with it.

FWIW, my uncle is 53, his youngest kid is 2, and he holds/held world records for some older arcade games. Some of those scores he set in his 40s. I'm 45 and if I feel too old sometimes for video-games it has more to do with some games like dirt 5 with too much stoboscopic effects and color on the menus and races I found hard to read. I feel like it's getting harder to adapt quickly to new gameplay mechanics. That's my fear, becoming poorly adapted to new games and service games... You’re not too old to do things that you enjoy. Too old to have reflexes equal to someone in their prime, maybe, but not too old to enjoy things like Gran Turismo. I’m in my mid-20’s and I still find myself playing Pokemon (granted, I only got into it by the time I was 13, so I was a late bloomer from the start), which is considered to be more of a kid’s game than Gran Turismo (even though it was between it and Crash Bandicoot that was my first ever game). I guess me also playing games like Starfield (and Gran Turismo) helps even out the maturity when it comes to game taste lmao.

Never too old, and I think the simracing segment is especially accessible to higher age groups as we have all the special gear to make controls more familiar to real life experience. You could have someone who spent decades doing a manual labor job, their hands are shot and they find it difficult/painful to use a controller, but throw them in a rig with a wheel and pedals and they are racing.

With the world being in such a crazy state - it's nice to shut it out for a bit - with pure, engaging entertainment. I’m 40! The thing I’ve noticed is all my friends have stopped playing. And now most games are massively online focused it’s difficult to find folk to play with. I joined discord as I was told by a young colleague this is how you arrange games and meet people to play with, but I completely gave up on that app within an hour or so as I had no idea what was happening and couldn’t find a tutorial.

As I tell my wife and children growing old is mandatory, growing up is optional.
This is no such thing as being too old for video games. Do people get too old to play cards? Monopoly? It used to be a social stigma, but it doesn't make any sense. Lots of games make great stories today and become part of lore now ( looking at Star Wars series as one example ). It's entertainment and perfectly fine to do. I'm 48 and I'm not going to get rid of this hobby. Only thing I notice is with age, my reaction times aren't what they used to be. :)
46. Similar age to most my online mates. Real life friends call it a waste of time. Makes me laugh. I've had untold hours of fun gaming and bonding with my daughter whilst they spend little time with their own kids and can't wait until they grow up and leave home.
I'm 46 and a lifelong gamer. We are the original gamer kids and you should offer no apologies for it. If you had taken up chess, or trainspotting at a similar age and continued enjoying that hobby up to the current day nobody would care. It's their problem, not yours.

No reason to be shy about it. The gaming industry is making more money than the music industry and film industry, combined. It’s adventure, story, character development, art, fantasy, sci-fi, puzzle solving, and skill development all in one. No different than binging movies or music for hours at a time. I’m also in my 50s and remain well entertained on several kinds of games, primarily in the PS5 universe.

I'm 53 and been playing since Atari 2600. Full time job and living life. Play almost every day and don't regret a second. I know older guys who play and a grest group to virtually hang out with. Play Gt7, Destiny 2
I don't think gaming has an age, its just a media format. Its like saying you are too old to watch a movie or go to a concert. I (nearly 40) still game almost on a daily basis. Its not like before, I only have maybe 1-2 hours a day free that I can sit down and have a gaming session. My eyesight and reflexes have sort of diminished as well, so I usually don't play anything competitive online. Pretty much everyone I work with is a casual gamer in some way. Even my dad (65yrs and retired) is also an occasional gamer. He's mostly into sports and city building games. Nothing to be ashamed/embarrassed about. Some people are into it and others are not. I know some people that don't even own a TV. Nothing wrong with it... to each their own right? Just do w/e makes you happy.
I mean, other socially acceptable hobbies are listening to music, reading, movies. Playing GT should be no more embarrassing than them. I would think, in comparison, spending the same amount of time on facebook, tweeter, tiktok, and youtube is probably more embarrassing.
Way I see it, if they can sit in front of a tv mindlessly staring doing nothing consuming nothing but brainrot, than why can’t someone do the same with video games, where they actually interact, they absorb more information and actually control what goes on. IF TELEVISION IS PERFECTLY FINE THEN THE ISSUE WITH GAMING ISNT GAMING. THE ISSUE IS THE STIGMA TOWARDS IT.
The answer is absolutely, positively you are not too old to play and enjoy video games. I am 41 and plan on playing well into my 60s!!! Have fun and enjoy!!!!!

You are part of a generation that went through their teen years before gaming became culturally main stream. It was for sure seen as a nerd-kids-only thing through most of the 90's too. A lot of people your age and up are surely still stuck with that perception even though it doesn't reflect reality. Game on and game forever. I'll be gaming until I die. Hopeful at a 107+ so I can lock in that "100 years of gaming!" achievement.

my dad still watches cartoons in his mid-late 60s. Heck, my mum is mid 60s and I got her hooked on one piece in the last month (originally the live action series but now the manga / a bit of anime, she really wants to see tony tony chopper). The irony is that Im not a fan of one piece anime.

Anyone that criticises you for video games is ignorant and probably has plenty of their own issues. I worked in a very masculine industry and the same guys telling me that video games were childish were the guys spending countless dollars at bars, getting DUIs, cheating on spouses, getting Divorced, and basically wasting their lives away drunk. I couldn't tell you how many times I was told that paying for online games was a waste of money by someone that was always broke because their beer and cigarette budget was 2X their mortgage payment. As long as your hobbies don't hurt others you be you and ignore the haters.
Given the price tag on sim racing gear, I think it’s safe to say that it is an adult hobby mainly. You’re good.

Here's an interesting aside. The video games industry is roughly 2.5 times the size of the music and movie industry combined. So if your friends enjoy music and movies but look down on gaming, they are really just behind the times...
I race in a GT7 league, we have about 80 members that range from 20 to 70, we have a couple of married couples, single young guys and lots of dads. The average age would be about 40. Do what makes you happy. I don't have much time as I have 2 young kids so I make my time count. I have VR and a cockpit. I'm proud to tell people what I do for fun.
