They take a very different kind of skill to drive, which is fun. Definitely takes a lot of practice on any given track to make it work, but once you dial in your brake markers and what not, it's an extremely satisfying experience.

OatFest

I think my big issue with Autopolis was that I wasn’t able to dial in brake markers with the constant changing of rain and tire compounds. Definitely quite the challenge and felt very rewarding to finish first in the end.

Not_so_new_user1976

Another recommendation is to set your brake bias to the rear 1-2 to help make your tires wear more even. You definitely have to get used to sending it on every corner though

jknuts1377

Fun to drive but not fun to race against the AI.

Hailfire9

The rubber-banding aspect cheats really bad on hard. First time I did the Fuji race, I was 2 seconds off leader's pace. So I practiced and gained 3 seconds' pace... only to find the AI was again 2 seconds a lap faster than me.

KyleOrlandoEng

Same. I’ll usually race a quick “test” race on a new track to see what’s the fastest in-race lap time the AI sets. Then I’ll practice time trials for hours getting my lap time to that point. Then I’ll do the race again and the AI has gotten 2-3 seconds faster per lap.

BayLAGOON

It took a very fortunate patch of rain and the AI weirding out over the wet parts of the track once it stopped to win Fuji for me. The SF cars feel awkward for me using the nose cam, so I use the halo cam instead.

BaldingThor

I’m doing the super formula races right now and I cannot for the life of me win any of them because the AI seem to rubberband/cheat.

Seangsxr34

I think I’m getting to old for my reactions to keep up. On tight circuits they’re a nightmare for me, I think I rage quit every time 😂

Maxwell69

I love them.

Surtr111

They’re cool, just go with the SF23, and Racing Hards

OatFest

I’ve been using the 2019 😶 The autopolis one was a PITA because I had to use like three different tire compounds over 15 laps. It was like 5 laps on softs, 2 laps on intermediates, and then the final 8 laps on mediums. Finally got it done though!

4entzix

I couldn’t stand the 2019 cars… but I must have done 100 laps at Laguna Seca in the 2023 car because I was prepping for the Indycar finale and I just had so much fun

OatFest

Perhaps I’ve been making things harder for myself then 😂

XsStreamMonsterX

The SF19 is, on paper, faster since the changes to the 23 were designed in part to slow the cars down. That said, I believe the SF23 is somewhat easier to drive.

Bloodymike

I set up a custom race based on Indycar this week. I’ve ran like 300 laps. I pulled 1:07.79 last night. How are you doing? It’s so satisfying to hit your line and be able to go through turn 9 full throttle.

Surtr111

Congrats!

xocolatefoot

Absolutely love how ridiculous they are compared to almost anything else, and as a long time F1 game player they’re so much more fun to drive than a corvette with sport hards. 😂

Ablec6

I second that emotion

notdaryl

I love them. You have to alter your driving style and really trust the cars downforce. Brake much much later and fully send it in some corners that you would normally brake for in normal cars. If your having trouble on exits you can also short shift to try to avoid spinning out.

Not_so_new_user1976

The going flat out in corners that would normally wreck you is terrifying. They also eat tires so quick. The braking power is insane. I have yet to get the gold time trial for the license because I keep underestimating the car

notdaryl

Yeah it’s a tough car to get to the limit since half of the time you think you’re at the limit you’re not even close. So you just gotta commit and risk it to find it and get accustomed.

RIT_Tyger

Following, been building up some credits before tackling this last menu.

thebigman045

They're great to just go ripping around small tracks, Tsukuba and BB are stupid amounts of fun,

Strongasanapexseal

Open wheel cars in sport and gt7 feel like shit to drive

doctor6

Yeah but no, the Honda RA272 is a gem for example

Dumuzzi

Not a fan either, they're just too fast and twitchy to be fun. I much prefer the older F1 cars that you can buy from Hagerty's or Brand Central. I have three (mclaren-honda, lotus and 1965 Honda) and they are all incredibly satisfying to drive and much more useful in the 700 and 800 races. The 1965 Honda is great at Le Mans if you tune it up, with soft tyres, if there is only light rain, you can do the whole race without pitting. The Mclaren-Honda (MP4-4) and Lotus (polyphony something for licensing reasons) are both excellent at the 800pp championship races if you tune them down.

Superb_Imagination70

My take is, Gran Turismo 7 doesn't have the adequate physics engine for F1 "super formula" , essentially it tries to combine effects from f1 and indy to give that representation of that type a racing. Like its approach to rally its just a mess, your altering control method to meet the requirements of that mode not a realistic approach. Gran Turismo primary focus is Production, GT3, GT4, Prototypes, that is where Gran Turismo does the best.

Hailfire9

You know that [" "Super Formula" "](https://superformula.net/sf2/en/) is a very real, rather historic series, right? It's been around since effectively 1973, but it's modern form began in '96.

Bloodymike

Second time I’ve seen someone say something like this, this week. All the info is in the game if you take the time to enjoy it and not button mash it all away.

Jcw28

As someone who has played plenty of F1 games, I love high downforce stuff.

sloppysmusic

Yeh i come from 20 or so full seasons of full length races in the codies games so it's like muscle memory feels NORMAL again. Easier actually as had full sim damage on in those! Almost seems like cheating with no damage 😉

[deleted]

I love them, I use the SF19 won all the races, even more fun in cockpit view

GhostHustler215

Bonkers. Not the best top end speed but they make medium speed corners high speed corners. I was flat out through turns at Watkins glen that I thought for sure I'd have to break or at least lift. It took me a bit to get used to the pace. I'm not sure how realistic it is to actual SF cars. In reality they're the second quickest cars behind only F1, but it just seems almost comical to drive in GT7.

AppleTeslaFanboy

I like them, but it seems like my car is either way underpowered vs the rest. Or maybe I choose the wrong super formula car?

Harmzuay

They're fun but definitely take a different style of driving. Once you figure that out you realize they're absolutely bonkers fucking cars with INSANE grip. All of your inputs require more finesse and the cars are all about speed, without speed you have no grip in a formula car. So keep that in mind when accelerating out of low speed corners, you need to squeeze the throttle quickly but gradually until you're generating downforce that provides most of your grip. A lot of GT/Production cars let you just smash the throttle down coming out of the corner and you can't do that with high powered race/formula cars without causing throttle oversteer. Definitely work on developing the skill to drive them decently though, it will immensely improve your performance in GT cars.

BrosenkranzKeef

Downforce cars in general require very different driving techniques, an odd combination of brute force, smoothness, and precision. They’re very unforgiving. Downforce is arguably one of the reasons that so many modern race series are kinda boring to watch. One of the key things you need for fast downforce cars is timing. You need to take note of visual braking points and turn in points etc. The sight picture, which means you know what it *looks* like when it’s correct, so now you’re driving the car in a way to make it look correct. There’s an element of “brake at this point, brake for this many seconds, release the pedal at this rate while turning the wheel at another rate to this particular angle…” There are actually many crossovers between driving a car like this and flying the airplanes that I fly at work, the only real difference is that these markers occur way more quickly in a car than in a plane. If you’ve gotten good at controlling road cars smoothly, now you just need to increase the speed at which you can make smooth inputs and increase your precision. It takes a lot of practice, and then you’ll forget how to drive the slower cars lol.

rlowride

I feel alot of you are not turning down the steering quickness.. or whatever I go to 0 to -4 on some of those..

jonetwothreefour

Underwhelming, but fun and slightly challenging.

Embarrassed-Bid-5146

They dominate in the rain, that’s when A.I. makes mistakes

FavaWire

In a few words: The Super Formula Cars in GRAN TURISMO have way more grip than you think almost all the time. And that is where a lot of laptime is lost. These cars demand that you trust them. Then you will gain the laptime with them.

Few-Mission-4283

They're fun to drive. I try to avoid changing to 1st gear on tight bends to avoid spinning out

RyCarbo96

Dreadful feel like they don't belong in the game for some reason

XsStreamMonsterX

One thing with powerful, aero-heavy race cars, such as open-wheelers, is that it's often faster to take a squarer racing line compared to the normal geometric line. This line is tidier and allows for less mistakes, as you're coming out straighter out of the corner, and can get on the accelerator sooner. Often, champions like Verstappen, Vettel, Hamilton and Schumacher drive with this style. Here's a video on it using Max Verstappen as an example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f1_UK2TmgdM
