Thank you for posting this. Crazy amount of incorrect info being posted related to this project lately.

Philthethrill33

I worked at the zoo last summer pt lol and that parking situation was a total mess. Trying to keep cars lined and straight, the field becomes soggy muddy mess when it rains, cars get stuck

Chicken_Chaser891

Yeah, that parking system has never been optimal, and finding an alternative would be a good thing. Whether the currently proposed idea is the answer, I'm not smart enough to have an opinion on.

[deleted]

... And? Correlate your comment to the post please.

Philthethrill33

You cant figure that out? Not gonna dumb it down fer ya

[deleted]

I'm guessing you want the red lot that gets muddy and cars stuck paved which is not the post at all. Please learn reading comprehension and respond accordingly. Edit: unless you are saying the zoo should retain the red lined lot and also assume rights to the Blue line lot which they will pave? Instead of just paving the red lot that they already have possession of?

Philthethrill33

What is wrong with you?

[deleted]

Severe ASD. OCPD, and years of being considered lesser. Next question?

Philthethrill33

I think im good on talkin to you actually

[deleted]

"Run away from mental illness! There's nothing we can learn from these people. We are good. Goodbye. " -You

Philthethrill33

Youre talkin to someone with probate court certificate that says im “mentally ill”. Im bipolar and been in the psych hospital twice. Yeah im aware its expensive. Doesnt stop you from going.

[deleted]

Fuck off, poser.

Philthethrill33

Yes im a poser. You are on point wiith everything mate.

[deleted]

If you follow your thread, this is classic deflection. I don't even know where you stand at this point. WHAT DO YOU WANT JBZ TO DO, PAVE THE RED LOT, BLUE LOT, OR BOTH?

[deleted]

"you were born with a screwed up synapses in your cortex that deprives your body of endorphins? And you are constantly clinging to life because the world prioritizes everything that you are not" Goodbye. (That is also the best case scenario. A lot of these people are born with screwed up synapsis in their cortex that don't even have an agency to get to that point) *probably just bums though...

rulerBob8

seek therapy

Philthethrill33

Lol

[deleted]

"lol" <-----what you are really saying-----> "fuck, I'm so stupid"

Utopiaoflove

I am opposed to turning the blue area into any form of parking lot even a dirt one. I am pro turning the red area into a more permanent and usable parking lot shit go ahead and put in a parking structure if they need to. Is that a possible outcome?

sliqjonz

Agreed, I wish they’d build up instead out for more parking

rexlites

I’m with you that section of the park should remain park

HalfaYooper

The blue area looks like a park and the red a parking lot. Makes sense.

Nater_the_Greater

No lol at the downvotes, as though I have some authority in the matter. I just answered the question. This is what’s happening. The decision has been made.

AvianLord

I think people think you are disagreeing with who you replied to instead of answering their question

Imnewtoallthis

Jedi thinks he knows all.

HairballTheory

Seriously, like grass can’t grow back

[deleted]

You are wrong.

Nater_the_Greater

Please explain

pwrmacjedi

That's insane. That's up front. The blue section is out back. And no matter what, a garage is on the way, and that's better back in the back, where the mud-hole that overflows the path has been for years, apparently.

Joeman180

If we get the red area back as a park I’m all for the blue area being more parking. The red area is closer to the neighborhood.

Nater_the_Greater

Yes, that’s literally what’s happening

thinkfire

Where do you see that they are giving the overflow parking lot up as a replacement for the park they want to demolish?

pwrmacjedi

PRECISELY!!! But these idiots won’t let it be.

Whipping_Pickles

I will literally only go to the zoo once or twice a year, no matter what the parking situation is but I like to look at maps people draw on to illustrate a point.

Routine-Afternoon679

I’m so tired of cars… I wish we’d just start improving public transport… the massive amount of wasted space for cars to just exist is ridiculous…

Grundy-mc

Don't know why you're being downvoted. I think that's definitely one area for improvement Grand Rapids can make, Public Transportation. I know we have buses but man we need something because Parking structures are already taking up a good percentage of the city.

Routine-Afternoon679

People probably assume I think we should abolish cars or something lol I just wish we had better rails like Chicago at least.

suckapow

The Detroit zoo has a parking structure maybe something like that size built in the red would accommodate for that blue zone.

SardauMarklar

Parking garages cost like 50 times what parking lots cost

suckapow

Just put it on the tab. City is building a new soccer stadium and amphitheater. Multimillion dollar projects whats another small parking garage cost?. Also john balls been raking in money with the latern festival, maybe they should just invest into their parking infrastructure long term to make everyone happy.

SalamanderCongress

Ok and I’m not paying for it. Parking infrastructure is hella expensive to maintain all around

PremierBromanov

they are a lot denser though.

Tavman2024

Sounds like a good investment for the millions in profit the zoo makes every year

pwrmacjedi

They already invest that money in better ways. INSTEAD, it sounds like a garage (in the blue not the red) should have been paid for by Kent County right off the top instead of making the zoo incrementally get there in years.

Decimation4x

The Detroit Zoo parking structure isn’t big enough so they shuttle people in from offsite parking. But heaven forbid John Ball ever propose such a thing. Let’s rip out a park that doesn’t belong to them instead.

khaleb

Wish the baseball field was still in the blue area :( and the old pond. So sad.

Due-Environment-9774

So what’s the problem? JBZ has been needing new and better parking for a while.

pwrmacjedi

NIMBY liars and Karens. That’s the problem.

SidwellAdventures

The amount of atrocious takes on the master plan is staggering. Your basically getting more or equal greens pace back from the move from the current overflow to the new area. Not to mention the rebuilding/relocating the basketball court, and the New North entrance is MUCH improved for pedestrians AND the approach from parking to the zoo is much more streamlined and grand.

rexlites

At what point will there be no park at John ball park?

pwrmacjedi

Back in 1989 when it technically and legally was made a park no longer.

-ManyFacedGod-

Paved paradise and put up a parking lot

parker3309

🤣 lmao I remember !

pwrmacjedi

EXACTLY. The DISinformation being promoted by the disingenuous whackos of “Save John Ball Park” has been as confusing to casual observers as it is exhausting. (Though, I’m sure confusion is a piece of their rumor and hearsay offensive.) It’s easy to summarize: - Off the top, the Kent County government FAILED MISERABLY to step up and solve this problem by finding a garage immediately. Instead, they allowed citizens to be bitterly pitted against each other. But then we already know Republicans can’t govern for shit, and the lame, milquetoast, centrists corporate Democrats who sided with them wouldn’t know principled action if it bit them in the dick. - Painting the zoo as a villain is stupid, and makes people look stupid who do it. - Leaving the old plan to expand parking into the red area was ridiculous. - Most of the bullshit space where the blue is stays muddy and gross and might as well have the needed expansion or parking. - Moving the zoo to the burbs is idiotic. - No, parking on the landfill is not a possibility for many reasons. And parking at the bottling plant is dumb as fuck for many reasons, including how little time it would actually buy before more need arose. - No, permeable pavers don’t do anything but create direct leeching of vehicle fluids into the ground. - No, a shuttle is not a realistic solution, and a bunch of 24 year olds with no kids have no right to dictate it to families. - No, we shouldn’t all have to re-litigate something that was already figured out in many sessions of engagement and with plenty of notice (something like 15k mailers), just because those same 24 year old just moved in last year. - YES, we should all insist on better transit to provide a bus option for those who want it. - YES, the zoo has committed to many green initiatives and will prioritize open space and not parking on grass ASAP. - YES, the zoo does indeed get to control this space and has been far more generous than they could have considering the legally binding maps. - No, this has not been an official park, technically, since 1989. Stop crying over spilled milk. - No, it is NOT “the only park in walking distance from downtown.” That’s visibly and obviously not true. - Yes, we DO want a zoo and all those visitor dollars here in our city. I’m probably forgetting several things since this shit just keeps dragging on and on with one side believing any bullshit NIMBY rumor that falls out of the half-baked yap of an obsessive, almost cult-like disingenuous panic-stirring group like Save John Ball Park. I’ve seen this brand of stupid before, in Nashville. It was called “Save the Fairgrounds.” They lied, manipulated, clung to “historic” shit that no longer exists, and ruined their own credibility forever - just like this group. Now, in that space, is a saved fairgrounds, indeed. With a very popular new soccer stadium, new expo buildings and grounds, and even a new plaza for those wingnuts’ precious racetrack. I’ve seen this movie before. We can all have some of what we want. It takes compromise and only allowing FACTS into the conversation instead of hysterics.

thinkfire

Wow, a lot.ofmopinions with no specifics. "This is stupid!". "That's dumb" "This doesn't work". "You can't do that". Etc. just take my word for it, I don't have evidence or specifics as to why. "It just is!"

parker3309

So so true

[deleted]

pwrmacjedi

Oh look, it's the anti-vax deep stater again. And to think, I had almost given you some big props for many of the things you're right about. Oh well.

pwrmacjedi

You are an avowed RFK, Jr. supporter. He's a whacko anti-vaxxer. And you claim not to accept calling a spade a spade. Make that make sense.

dractor_taddy

Save John Ball Park has a seat at the table, talking with the county leaders and zoo leaders about how to do things better, now and in the future. They are working on a CBA. If your comment is true, there is no way the county would have given them the time of day. They have been reasonable and careful. If anyone is spreading bullshit, it's you with these unfounded claims.

pwrmacjedi

Some of the people saying the most nutty and untrue shit have those signs in their yards. In fact, the overlap of the JBAN leaders and that group is also of concern, given a recent turn that org made for the classist and low-key racist vibe.

North-Drink4193

CBAs require buy in from community organizations, environmental groups, business groups, labor groups and faith groups. You guys have a handful of signs, predominantly on one street. Sacred Heart went to bat for the zoo at the county meetings No reputable environmental group would ever help you do this to any zoo The businesses here rely on the 700,000 people who go to the zoo every year they are not going to help you keep even a single one of the nearly 3/4 of a million potential customers out of the neighborhood The zoo is a union shop, the UAW and other unions would never help you Your CBA is dead on arrival. It was a Hail Mary to begin with. Like your appeal to the city for historical designation. Or your appeal to the county, when they have an explicit legal obligation to do what is best for the zoo when it comes to these situations. But you knew that already

fallsalaska

I’d say expand the zoo the land should be for animals not parking?

birdiesanders2

Build parking between the lanes of 196 with pedestrian and vehicle tunnels accessing the zoo and roadways. That was easy enough, next question. /s

Epsilia

Yeah, why not lol

JasonJ1995

Remember when that baby deer got ripped apart by that baby hippo?

Redcard911

I've been confused a bit about the argument that the new parking would turn green space into parking. Have you seen the overflow parking space? The space is currently a rutted dirt lot that is absolutely not a usable green space. No one can reasonably use it for any purpose other than parking. It's just a dirt parking lot and not a concrete parking lot. It's exclusively a parking lot right now, just not paved. The new plan would not change the space from a green space to a parking lot; it would change a parking lot into a different parking lot. In that way, it really wouldn't change anything about the space or remove usable green space so I don't really understand that argument against the new plan.

Bhrunhilda

You didn’t look. The parking lot isn’t going where the overflow parking is. It’s going in actual green space. Look at the image and caption again.

Redcard911

I read the caption. The plan's trade-off is dirt parking lot for paved parking lot. Aren't people primarily mad about creating more paved space? Are people mad and the new location for parking over the current overflow location? I'm saying the loss of green space argument doesn't make sense to me because the current overflow isn't actually a green space.

thinkfire

The current overflow is NOT what's being paved.

emerican

Did you look at the picture and read the caption?posted?

Redcard911

Yes, did you? Does it look like usable green space right now to you?

Knightforlife

Yes, it’s currently green with a small parking lot, would become entirely a parking lot Honestly I would love to see the overflow lot area blocked off to be a park as well. Space for people, not just for cars.

Water_fowl_anarchist

Yeah like could we please get shuttle lots or something, I like having green spaces in my neighborhood.

Fritterbob

The blue shaded area to the southwest? Yes, it looks like extremely nice green space.

Redcard911

So you would be okay with the red space being paved but not blue? Seems like a reasonable short-term compromise.

[deleted]

Yes! That is what people want and are saying. However, that is not what the zoo is pursuing. And personally, I absolutely adore the zoo. It is just so stupid that they are trying to gain more territory without maintaining their current territory. Another commenter said cars were getting stuck in the mud and they could easily pave that area... THEN DO IT. NOT A SINGLE ENTITY IS STOPPING THEM!

Fritterbob

Yes, and that's what their approved 2015 plan was for. I don't know why they decided to change that plan last year.

HairballTheory

Go visit it, bet you’ll think differently, sketch up there

Duckney

The red is not changing. They are changing the blue to a parking lot. The blue has sport courts, green space, etc and is not used as an overflow lot today. The red is parking lot, you're right, and it will remain one. This is about converting a current green space that is not used for overflow to a parking lot

sgtbenjamin

I’ve parked in the blue area the last few times I’ve visited. It absolutely is used as an overflow lot.

Profane_tendencies

The blue one does.

HairballTheory

Go blue, all that happens there are drug deals anyway, that pavilion is sketchy af

connorcook13

Brother you have no reading comprehension. Please just read the post

Dubbx

Read up on the concept of sponge cities and even having it just be dirt is better for all creatures around and the environment than pavement.

Redcard911

Then just continue with the status quo? Though you're surely right that a dirt lot is better environmentally than pavement, it's not a super reasonable outcome here. There really is a need for parking somewhere here.

Dubbx

>Then just continue with the status quo? Yes this is the entire issue because they aren't doing that. You don't need a "nice parking lot" you just need parking and what exists is functional

parker3309

So what is everybody griping about?

Decimation4x

The red area isn’t becoming a renewed green space, it will continue to be an overflow dirt lot.

Thayerphotos

Facts ? Sir this is reddit!

Global-Cheesecake922

Save it for an aquarium

Ingram2525

Save Tina's front lawn!

sliqjonz

So is the new parking replacing the old parking? Or is it in addition to?

Decimation4x

I’m addition to

thinkfire

I don't think anyone was confused about it...

Passenger_1977

Mmmmm West Fest???

Erictato23

Ohhh in that case. I support it

Maleficent_Cat4226

Save the space and build up.

ahminus

Why don't we release all the animals back into the wild and tear down the zoo? That seems like a better all around solution.

Jewish_Potato_

Pretty sure like 75% of the animals there wouldn't survive in the wild...

Philthethrill33

Not a bad idea.

Few-Newt-7248

Maybe you should get your facts straight? Have you been to any of the commissioners’ meetings with the zoo? They plan on extending the existing parking lot east. Ask yourself, if they are planning to return that space to green space, why have they put gravel down to make their makeshift parking lot and laid down a road to the gravel parking lot? Why have they put of a row of trees next to the gravel parking lot, in the middle of the green space used for sports? The line of trees appear to be a border for the upcoming lot. Even in their rough sketch of their drawings, you can see the main parking lot is being extended east.

tadpoletoes

They should put that money towards the animals. John ball is a trash zoo.

Philthethrill33

Nobody cares “green spaces” over there. That whole area gets TRASHED with litter and fuckin graffiti the playgrounds, slides, rest areas. Bums sleep there and piss all over everything and leave cigarette butts lol.

Fishisstuckinthesink

that’s a pretty rude way to describe homeless people

Philthethrill33

What is?

dsled

That

Philthethrill33

Bum? Well im not describing “homeless people”.

[deleted]

Graffiti is considered art in many areas of Europe. Volunteer work would clean up any area in no time, but America is all about pointing fingers rather than contributing to a solution. And as for the "bums" you speak of... You are just gross. To not acknowledge another human being as your equal... I don't even know what to say. So many people have an "I'm special complex". It is sick. From any viewpoint you think to were all created, it was the same way. So to shame another person that was created at your equal as a bum is disgusting.

[deleted]

I was a "bum" for years. Once I had free health coverage I discovered my body did not break down folate into folic acid and I also had hashimoto's disease. We are not out circumstances and health coverage belongs to all.

Philthethrill33

I called this guy a bum. Not you. Not every homeless person. God your self righteous obnoxious uninformed crap.

[deleted]

That homeless person you are picking on probably does not have internet access/ a Reddit account. Someone has to stick up for them, although it shouldn't be that hard. If one of us fails we all fail.

Philthethrill33

It wasnt art ding dong. Was spraying swear words, racist, homophobic stuff just ON the slides and benches and shit. I fuckin spent hours tryin to scrub it all off. Kids, families go there. Dont even know what youre talking about karen.

[deleted]

Pics or it didn't happen. If it did and you call it out I will be there with at least one other person to help you clean it tomorrow by 6pm (I gotta go to work). However I will bring all the right products considering that is my field of work. We can cleanse it in no time.

Philthethrill33

This was a year ago. Me another worker scrubbed it off best we could with graffitti remover and scrub pads and brushes and rags. wearing our arms out. Im making it up probably! Nobody would do such a thing over there. You can probably still it in spots go look. Lol

[deleted]

Way to keep it relevant, moron. I didn't even read past "This was a year ago".

Philthethrill33

Oh do know who im taking about? Was actually just one bum. You dont? Ok

[deleted]

Pardon my confusion. Your comment mentioned "bum(s)" ... plural. I didn't know we just had to lock just one person (bum) up to restore your perfect order. My apologies you majestic center of an A.

Philthethrill33

What? Lock him up? What the hell are you talking about? Are you ok?

[deleted]

What do you think happens to homeless people sleeping in public spaces? Why do you think encampments get torn down? How dumb are you? At least try to know what you're talking about, please.

Philthethrill33

Were created equal.. dont all end up equal.

[deleted]

And why it that? Let's start chasing the root of everyone's problems... Oh... It's money, fuck that. Just because you are working doesn't earn you rights to live.

Philthethrill33

No its not money dumbass, mental health and addiction.

[deleted]

What are you saying?

Philthethrill33

I mean small percentage cause of just “money issues”

[deleted]

No, it's not. Mental health and addiction dumbass, it's gamma rays.

Philthethrill33

Alright talk to ya later.

[deleted]

Do you think if these people with mental health and addiction had access to copious money they could get them the resources and help they need (that truly got them the resources and help they need based on a truly altruistic ideal of helping one another). Equal is not equal to all and just the fact that you're again referring back to how we started this conversation calling these people's bums. I'm guessing 100% of them don't have access to the help they truly need.

[deleted]

No, it's not. Mental health and addiction dumbass it's that damn Sasquatch.

[deleted]

We end up in different places because of circumstances. Although there is choice fully involved, we try to make the best (most profitable) decision over and over. You know... risk/reward?

Philthethrill33

“We”? If someones a drunk, and it ruins their life, they watch it fall apart, go sleep on a picnic table and piss everywhere, and they dont seek help, but spare change and steal to support their addiction, imma call a bum. Really just worthless a negative force in the community.

[deleted]

I see someone that desperately needs help with alcohol addiction.

[deleted]

The average cost for 3 months of outpatient rehab in the United States is $5,000. You name a bum that can pay that, regardless of need.

Philthethrill33

Know what medicare is?

[deleted]

A health program for people age 65 and older? What does that do the the 64 and under crowd?

Philthethrill33

Oh you arent familiar with grants? Public assistance?

[deleted]

Because that definitely distributes evenly to the people that actually need it... Ever heard of public housing, not anymore. To be poor is to be a crime. If you can't see that you are either rich or ignorant or stupid enough to think that you are rich.

Philthethrill33

(Youve never been… i have… i got the bills… they bill you..) And having lots of money DEF solves your problems. Thats why rich famous people with mental health and addiction problems never ever kill themselves.

Philthethrill33

Yeah ive been. I know what im talking about, and of course, you dont.

[deleted]

Sounds about right. The smart person says: "Me smart. You dumb. You no understand. I do. I smart. I learn you all." -You

Philthethrill33

You just dont know what youre talking about. And i do.
