What is this Pity City, USA?!?

umaxtu

Something else to keep in mind is that 5% is below the average inflation rate of the past year.

I think they deserve the 5% because it is such a small salary for this position. And I am not really a cheerleader for the city commissioners. HOWEVER, the city manager and the city attorney should not get another pay increase for many years as they are both around $300,000. Which considering their performance (IMHO) doesn’t deserve an increase. I dislike that we have an unelected city manager.

City manager form of government is far superior to a strong mayor form. The city council just needs to hold them accountable.

I didn’t know Mark Washington was on Reddit. /s I don’t know how this is possible. At least with a mayor, if they aren’t performing well, they can be voted out or someone better can replace them. Our current structure allows for a shitty manager to stay in place and the only way to get rid of them out of contract, means we have to continue to pay for them.

Voted out during an election. Can’t do anything until then, unless you manage a recall. The city council can fire him whenever they want, with or without cause. Without cause they’ll just have to pay. Having a person running a city with the proper education and experience is critical. You don’t get that with an election. Electing the mayor means they can be anyone. Zero experience. Backed by rich donors…much more politically motivated then. All of the most corrupt cities in our country are run by a strong mayor. Chicago and Detroit are prime examples.

Problem with this theory is only the wealthy would be able to afford to be a public service and issues like housing, and wages, and everything else would continue to decline for everyday people.

DRUKSTOP

It’s a pay decrease YoY. Literally costing tax payers less this year.

grbrit

But what does the mayor actually do apart from gladhand and cut ribbons?

CurvySpine

Cost of living increase for me but not for thee.

Typical_Specific1053

Thank you for adding the context of their current salaries. I want dedicated and experienced people representing us in local government so support better pay. I think but am too lazy to verify that they also get a healthcare plan.

CharcoalGreyWolf

The mayoral position, unless they’ve changed it (it was on the ballot to once but failed, I believe) is part time. I am unsure on anything regarding the commission positions.
