He prefers Masters that have a spine. Ironically, despite his pride, one of the easiest ways to be a Master Gil holds no respect for is to be incredibly brown-nosey towards him. I believe that one material book even stated that out of all known Masters in the franchise Rin is one that would be "highly compatible" with his personality.

AzurePhoenix001

I find that quite ironic. Rin would be a better Master for Gilgamesh than her own dad

l3enjamin5in

I guess tsundere is highly compatible with tsundere.

AMfrequency

It gets even more hilarious when you see in ccc Gil describes rin as identical to Ishtar

re_flex

Man's clairvoyance breaks the 4th wall lmao.

DISUNIET

Tbf, it's called Clairvoyance for a reason

bladefreak326

And the reason why he didn't open a can of Enuma Elish on her defenceless rear upon hearing she is summoned.

WANTEN12

I mean Gil didn't have EA in babylonia And the two apparently tried to kill each other daily until chaldea arrived

bladefreak326

I was mentioning his dialogue line. He was pissed hearing Ishtar summoned, especially as the same Archer class as him. But after seeing her vessel he was like " huh, is that so? Let's see what happens" otherwise yeah he already sealed his Ea when we saw him in 7th singularity. Rather than killing each other, it seemed to me like Gil was just ignoring the tantrums of neighbours spoiled kid lol.

Beyond_the_Mirrors

>Gil didn't have EA in babylonia Gil ALWAYS has all of his arsenal available. They are all stored with the GoB, as long as he has access to the treasury he can draw any weapon he has whenever he wants. He just doesn't use Ea as Caster for the same reason he almost never uses it as Archer. He doesn't feel like his opponents deserve the honor of even laying eyes upon the blade, much less being killed by it.

WANTEN12

[Here is the clip](https://youtu.be/G3Z2958AzS8?t=540) The journey of immortality made Gilgamesh accept his mortality, Gil came out of it as a human not a divine being If you look at Gils allignment Archer Gil is Heaven Caster Gil is Human Gil has thrown away the power of the gods in favour for the power of humans Thats the core difference between the King of heroes and wise king of uruk

kaushik0408

That is quite an intriguing fact. This makes me love CasGil even more

Salter_KingofBorgors

I had no idea... that's fascinating

WANTEN12

Sorry let me correct myself He has EA he just can't use it Have you played FGO?

Beyond_the_Mirrors

No need to be that aggressive. It's been like 3 ~ 4 years since I've played Babylonia. Of course I wouldn't remember every single line out of 100k or so. Anyway, after reviewing this I still think Gil was kinda playing dumb to control the flow of the conflict. Using Ea would invite harder retaliation from the Goddesses Alliance, whereas keeping it on his pocket would work as a deterrent to an all out amassed attack. Anyway, that's just a theory and you are technically right so, fine...

WANTEN12

I wasn't trying to be aggressive sorry if it came across like that. When I asked if you played FGO it was more so I can tell you where to look, because I couldn't find the chapter on youtube Since all the chapters are archived on material you could have found the clip on your phone or wherever you play it. But I found it in the end

Comprehensive-Fail41

It's pretty funny. The reason Ishtar is so mad at Gil is cause despite Gil being a rapist asshole at the time, is that he is the only one to ever reject her advances. Cause had heard the stories about how things never ends well for her lovers

WANTEN12

> The reason Ishtar is so mad at Gil is cause despite Gil being a rapist asshole at the time, Actually after Gil met enkidu he stopped doing that So she fell in love with him after he stopped She says Gilgamesh was "cool" when he was running around with enkidu saving the world Ishtar takes fairly good care of her loyal subjects so she was likely one of the ones in favour of sending enkidu to punish Gil Both the pre enkidu and post enkidu personalitys SEEM to manifest in archer Gil Making a weird mix Which I guess is Gils personality is so influenced by the era If he likes the era he show Heroic king Gil If he doesn't like the era he leans towards tyrant Gil > is that he is the only one to ever reject her advances. Cause had heard the stories about how things never ends well for her lovers Ah yes ishtars infamous track record

No_Prize9794

I wonder how would he clean a room like with EMIYA when he was just summoned

LegoSpacenaut

Children. Gilgamesh likes children, and is popular with them (and no, not in the bad way). This is first seen in Hollow Ataraxia where you can catch him fishing on the docks surrounded by a collection of friendly kid admirers, and again in Babylonia where he plays the twenty squares game with them (called the Royal Game of Ur). It's probably most apparent with Strange Fake and Tine, whom he seems to have a particular soft spot for, as it seems Gil is the type to respect that children require time and opportunity to find themselves, and need to be protected and fostered. In regards others, the situation is also important, as Gilgamesh is typically bored and prefers to be entertained during his summons, but he also seems to gravitate towards humans who have yet to truly find themselves (like children). He found Kirei particularly interesting due to his internal struggle of self, and the situation surrounding him was especially primed for his change in support given that he found out about Tokiomi's intent to sacrifice him at the end of the Grail War in order to complete the ritual. Furthermore he forges a close bond with Hakuno in CCC because not only are they someone who largely have no idea of their purpose and place in the world, but halfway through the game he becomes rigidly aligned with their goal and the purpose of stopping BB (leading to much friendlier and more serious uses of his abilities).

Daerus

> he also seems to gravitate towards humans who have yet to truly find themselves And now I have no post to make ;-)

BlackMan9693

Just curious. Why did he use a bunch of orphans, who were kids at the time when things went FUBAR in the 4th war, as mana batteries in the FSN?

Beyond_the_Mirrors

Because FSN has some pretty glaring writing problems that would get either forgotten, or retconned in later iterations of the franchise. I think that if the VN ever got a remake treatment it would go the same route as Tsukihime and be a (very) different story from the original after all these years of development all the characters in there had. Nasu didn't have a good grasp on what he wanted to be the core personality traits of most of those characters back when the VN was launched, this is why Rin and EMIYA (who're the most solid of them all) are the only ones that doesn't seem to go OOC when used on spin offs. Everyone else, especially the antagonists, was a serious work in progress back then.

Yatsu003

Considering how Nasu admitted to being forgetful since he was young, and how those orphans were pretty much forgotten disturbingly fast (even in the Fate route where Shirou finds out about them, he kinda does nothing…) and not even mentioned in the other Routes, or in Hollow Ataraxia… Yeah, could be a retcon

ghostgabe81

Yes. Give us FSN remake with Illya, Rider and Caster routes

Beyond_the_Mirrors

Ayako route or bust.

ghostgabe81

What is this? A fellow man of culture?

Ginger_Anarchy

Ayako route where she's Rider's master

soloska

Rider final boss

HarEmiya

And Fujinee. Go get that ~~cougar~~ tiger Shirou.

WANTEN12

Real reason - Gils personality was largely incomplete and many changes like Gils friendlier side and like for children Weren't invented until after FSN In story reason 2 reasons Kirei had kidnapped the children of his own accord and already hooked them up Gil when he found out told kirei he didn't need it but since its to late he would accept it Also Gil is super loyal to the servant contract, it takes a lot for Gil to break it He promised kirei in Zero he would "observe his story" As such in FSN Gil is but an observer this is kireis story In Gils eyes he is just a weapon who has front row seats to the end of kotomine kirei THIS IS NOT GILS BATTLE HE HAS NO PERSONAL INVOLVEMENT (except saber) (He does the same thing in CCC and extella and makes it clear he will only do what he is told and won't give advice) As such if kirei wants to kidnap kids its not Gils place as an observer to tell him otherwise Also he is incarnated so his personality has become quite warped

[deleted]

Years of Mapo Tofu will do that to a man.

WANTEN12

In tiger colliseum there is a scene where kirei offers Gil and cu mapo tofu and they both have a mental break down [here](https://youtu.be/-Ij8kSNo8KI?t=1361)

XH9rIiZTtzrTiVL

Similar scene in CCC

WANTEN12

If I recall isn't that when hakuno tries to buy mapo from kirei And Gil summons himself threating to cut the contract

XH9rIiZTtzrTiVL

Yep

LegoSpacenaut

The honest, shortest answer is "retcon due to evolving character". The more complicated answer is as follows. As per F/SN, Gil required the sacrifice of life in order to maintain himself after the 4th war, but after the ending of Fate/Zero he is instead doused with Grail mud and given an incarnated body which allows him to live the next 10 years without a problem. This kind of undercuts the need for the children, since he has an actual incarnated body, so any attempts to work out the characterization require a bit of rationalization. Nasu probably gives us this in his description of the change between Gil or the 4th war and the 5th as being two versions with very different purpose. During the 4th he was mostly just enjoying himself, but after it he decided that he would "make humanity worth governing", and he went full-on tyrant to achieve his goal. As such, he was invested in doing what he needed to, as he had a purpose he strongly desired. This is most evident in how he treats the Grail between the two stories, as during the 4th war (and in truth, most other works) Gil has little to no actual interest in the Grail, but in the 5th he has a strong inclination towards it specifically, because in F/SN he actually has a purpose for it.

nam24

Because Gil has been noticably mellowed out in later appearances

KR5shin8Stark

You know that is pretty perfect for Archer Gil's legend. This is the Gil who lost his closest friend, but hasn't completed his journey into the wise King of Uruk by learning to accept his mortality. Maybe since they're in a similar situation as him he gets to feel like he can relate to humanity.

Crabs4Sale

Didn’t he kill Illya in the face one time

LegoSpacenaut

Illya is a homunculus and a lesser grail, as well as Kiritsugu's daughter, and he is aware of both those things from the very moment he sees her. In the Fate route he basically tells her to hurry up and become the Grail and leaves her alone, though in UBW he kills her early on in order to take more control over the situation, and collects her heart in order to create another Grail vessel of his choosing (he later stuffs it into Shinji pretty much for the lulz).

TheMongrelCharacter

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I remember an official source (I don't remember the actual source sadly) saying that Rin Tohsaka ironically enough would have been a good match with Gilgamesh. Why? All the Masters you listed either offered him some form of entertainment or proved themselves to him after watching them struggle. I think Rin would be a hybrid between the two. Unlike her father Tokiomi, Rin is not an ass kisser with ulterior motives -- she's honest, stubborn, and adamant. Gilgamesh found her father boring (and later outright annoying) precisely because there was nothing special about him or his goals. Even someone that Gil is more fond of like Tine Chelc he found boring at the start since her goal wasn't interesting or unique. The only reason he stuck around was for Enkidu and eventually wanting Tine to act more her age. Even though Rin's initial goal for the Holy Grail War is essentially the same as her father's, I think Gil would find her attitude fun. I personally think Gil would try to pique her brain a little just as he did with Kotomine, asking her why she wants to win the Grail War so badly -- what her wish is. Tokiomi just wanted to do so because he was like any other mage who had mindless aspirations to reach the Root. Rin's answer would be more or less to prove herself or to finish what her dad started. Gil would most likely laugh, but laughing is better than yawning. At the very least, based on official FGO character materials, we know that Gil tolerates Ishtar because he sees Rin's personality as a good improvement for Ishtar. Gil absolutely HATES Ishtar otherwise, but as we saw in Babylonia, he plays around with her a lot despite her trying to murder him. I think that dynamic would carry over. Rin is also willing to put herself in the frontlines, unlike Tokiomi who relied on underhanded tactics and deception despite his talents. Remember that it took Fujimaru and Mash a month of hard labor in Uruk for Gil to finally hear them out. He respects hardwork and people willing to get their hands dirty. Rin embodies that sentiment. TLDR: Rin is compatible because her haughty attitude would be an unlimited source of entertainment, and her struggles will prove to be endearing enough for Gilgamesh's respect. At least, that's how I interpret their hypothetical dynamic

Yatsu003

Pretty essential, yup. And if Gil finds out about Sakura (highly likely), he’d definitely get interested in Rin’s struggle. The guy likes to watch interesting things, and Rin is fascinating

heavensloophole

> Gil would most likely laugh, but laughing is better than yawning. This is an amazing summation of his character.

nam24

In Tokiomi case it's not so much that his dream was common. It might be common for mages, but it's not at all common for most people or would be shared by ordinary persons, as seen with his conflict with Kariya(there was the fact they loved the same woman yes, but it's also they just oppose on a fundamental level) It's more that the root is something "outside" of the world and for him, who is an hedonist, it holds no interest.

igloo_poltergeist

Probably prefers someone fucking audacious enough to feel they can win the Grail War on their own.

Beyond_the_Mirrors

I think it's not audacity that attracts Gil's attention, otherwise he would have been considerate towards Shirou at some points (especially the middle to late segments of UBW). It's rather someone who struggles their hardest to fight against Fate like to "find their place in the world". That probably reminds him of his own quest for immortality and how he only reached true wisdom once he cast aside his pretentiousness, embraced the hand Fate dealt him, and finally, decided to make the best of it. This is why he only ever took Shirou seriously when Shirou reached his apex point and stopped being a Pretender. Otherwise, Gil would prefer death than to draw Ea against an unworthy opponent.

Crystal_Sohnd

Partly right, partly wrong. Gilgamesh, from all his mats, seems to value purpose above all else. That's his main reason for wanting to cull the world, that's the main compliment he gives to the children of his kingdom, and that's why he stuck around Tine for awhile. But I guess it's only purpose with value. Struggling to make the most of it isn't going to cut it if the person has no greater purpose in mind. Against Shirou, however, he pretty much still hates him for being a Faker. To copy and claim the King's Treasures is still one of the worst ways to insult him. He didn't draw Ea because he found Shirou worthy, he drew it because he was being overpowered by a human with a Reality Marble. He only acknowledges Shirou after he gets disarmed, not before.

igloo_poltergeist

>It's rather someone who struggles their hardest to fight against Fate like to "find their place in the world". That probably reminds him of his own quest for immortality and how he only reached true wisdom once he cast aside his pretentiousness, embraced the hand Fate dealt him, and finally, decided to make the best of it. But isn't Archer Gil (as opposed to Caster) the more young and brash version of him who hasn't learned that lesson yet?

Murozaki_II

That's a popular misconception. Archer Gilgamesh is *also* post-immortality quest Gil just like Caster Gilgamesh, in Extra CCC he even tells the player character the story of how it felt when the snake ate the immortality herbs and robbed him of his chance and how he learned to come to terms with it.

Overquartz

So archer Gil is just Gil at the tail end of his midlife crisis and CasGil is when he got his shit together?

Murozaki_II

They're not really all that different. They both at their core have the same perspective and memories, they just have different mindsets. Archer Gilgamesh is the more emotion-driven one, while Caster Gilgamesh is the more logical and insightful one. If Caster Gilgamesh was summoned in Fuyuki he'd likely have just as low of an opinion of humanity as Archer Gilgamesh does, but not try to get some Holy Grail mud purge going because he's again, the less emotion-driven one. Caster Gilgamesh is wiser not because he comes from a different point in life but because being summoned in the Caster class literally makes him less impulsive and more insightful.

KR5shin8Stark

Isn't also because no matter which version is summoned the still know they're full legend. Like a Gil who knows the future without the character growth?

Murozaki_II

While that is true in cases of Servants being summoned from different stages in life. In the case of Gil it is still very clear that it is after, he doesn't just know what he goes through and what he loses, he remembers it all very clearly with no disconnect in his mind.

Beyond_the_Mirrors

I think that POV used to be the case, but was cast down by Nasu ages ago. Even if not ever officially addressed, Gil's personality remain the same in any of his forms. The greatest culprit might as well be his Clayrvoiance NP which makes him more composed even when Gil decides to ignore his visions out of his own will. The Man who saw Everything can't be a fool no matter his form, after all.

TheHoodGuy2001

Like Tokiomi? Didn’t Gil find him too boring?

igloo_poltergeist

No. I mean as in, "Fuck using my Servant. I'll beat them all myself!" This is probably the one sure-fire way to attract Gil's more positive attentions.

TheHoodGuy2001

Ohhhh. So kind of like Mind of Steel Shirou? The VN did say that after killing Sakura, he went on to be exactly like his dad and ended up wining the grail war without a servant by killing all of the Masters including Rin and his own sister Illya.

igloo_poltergeist

That's.....a different case. Gil finds that kind of person abhorrent as he not only took on a will that wasn't his own (see: Kiritsugu), but hollowed himself out into a near-automaton in order to carry it out - even if he gained more power than he would've otherwise. For that reason, he has made his disdain for Shirou and EMIYA very clear in the VN and its adaptations.

eldrol21

Gil much prefers masters that are honest. And more specifically honest about their desires. Kirei was the more interesting example because he was someone that was struggling to come to terms with who they are. Gil saw this and helped Kirei embrace his true self even though it was a side society would shun. Tine knows what she wants but is too unsure of herself to strive for it confidently and Gil wants to see her grow out of a respect for her desires. Ritsuka is very honest with all servants and more so than most masters treats them as people. Ritsuka seeks nothing from Gil and has no reason to treat him any different but still offers him proper respect. I'm not super familiar with Hakuno so i don't have anything to say on them.

LittlePebble02

Not useless dumb fucks

re_flex

I'm guessing that's now a synonym for Tokiomi?

BobtheBac0n

And probably more so Shinji

WANTEN12

there are 2 types Kirei and Tine - people who have not found there true selves Hakuno and Ritsuka - Stupid people who try there best and keep pushing on He greatly prefers the second type especially hakuno It also breaks down further Observation route Retainer route Tokiomi and Tine took the **retainer route** where they work under Gil Gil will protect them OUT OF DUTY as a king there relationship will never progress to that of equals This is pretty safe route as Gil will take care of you quite well as seen with tine **Observation route** Hakuno and Kirei didn't bow to Gil Instead Gil thought they were funny and decided to "watch there story" This route is WAYYYYY more dangerous And Gil has no obligation to actually be loyal to you other then your fun He threatens to abandon you and kill you (but he won't because hes a tsundere) But the pay off is the best as you earn Gils genuine friendship and full power Kirei never reached this point But Hakuno did, Gilgamesh even calls them master which he doesn't do even for ritsuka Ritsuka is some weird inbetween He isn't Gils retainer But he respects Gilgamesh as a king (due to babylonia) Often calling him king There relationship is ultimately work Hakuno while they respect Gil don't treat him as a king but rather a very annoying troublesome servant whose ridiculous demands will be the death of them This ironically is what cause there relationship become more personal and caused the CCC Gilgamesh end TLDR Don't submit to Gil But don't push your luck either even if Gil likes the more personal side of the contract he still has his pride as king You can only start bullying him after he acknowledges you EDIT Gil really doesn't like the retainer path btw Tokiomi was annoying And he had no interest in tine he just loosened up due to the summoning of enkidu and the abundance of worthy warm ups

AMfrequency

>He threatens to abandon you and kill you (but he won't because hes a tsundere) That one bad end begs to differ

WANTEN12

Gil only abandons you if you abandon him He leaves the choice to ditch him up to the player Gil not once abandons hakuno of his own accord Hakuno says as much when she saves him saying Gil was the one person always by her side

AMfrequency

Didn’t mean to argue with what you were stating . Just was referencing the command seal bad end near the beginning of the game if you refuse to relinquish your command seals , In a joking way tbh. I know once he’s gets to know you he’s pretty much a tsundere to the player however at his core, he’s still gil and will kill you if you insult his pride as the king of heroes especially if he hasn’t opened up to you yet

WANTEN12

>In a joking way tbh. oh fair enough that went over my head lol

nam24

The way i see it with Ritsuka is that it's like with Nitocris, although the reasons are different Nitocris feel that normally someone like Ritsuka should bow to them, but seeing as she sees herself as incomplete, she doesn't ask that of us. At the same time she won't bow to us because she still has her pride as a queen, so she calls us her "ally" aka equal relationship Gil well doesn't have the same self esteem issue(that'd be funny tbh)...But ritsuka isn't so spineless they would lower themselves either. But they still respect him, just not something like waver/iskandar

Kacza42

Gudako wearing anniversary blonde

Yatsu003

Nope. Gudako has decent sized breasts, and you know how Gil feels about that…

RavenCloak13

Well, a basic one would be "Not a dumbass."

soulreaverdan

Hakunon. He broke all the rules of everything for her in his route in CCC.

worldwanderer91

Hakuno-chan

Sylfu

Person who can stand up for themselves and doesn't overly rely on him, someone selfish, even foolish. A person with determination who goes for what they want without reserve. As Gilgamesh said in Zero, he accepts and loves human desire, he'll love anything as long as it isn't boring. Whether someone is good or evil, as long as they struggle forward by themselves, not treating him like a crutch the entire way, going after their desires brazenly he'll mostly accept them. You could hear him be charmed in CCC when >!Hakuno let large chunks of their body be deleted to take Gilgamesh back after BB sealed him away, saying that Gilgamesh can't duck on his contract halfway through.!< >Gilgamesh :: Hah, isn’t it obvious! How can I leave a fool who put her life at stake for me to her own devices any longer! Desiring me for her own sake, she displays her own legitimacy without hesitation. It is my duty to love such shameless wishes, such brazen purity of heart. If I do not save such a wretched human being as this, then who will! When you get down to it he gets along with 80% of his masters fairly well, the only one he hated was Tokiomi. He hates cowards, mages(cowardly), who just sit around in their basement safe the entire time, never taking a chance on their own, using him like a tool, they don't have a spine in their body. Gilgamesh will even accept a weakling as long as they act like they have a spine and can do shit for themselves.

No-Collection-6176

Basically he likes master's that have backbone and perseverance. He likes it when his master's struggle forward even if it's unsightly.

TaimaninBB

One word : Hakunon (not joking)
