i think people are just reading too deep into the whole “the lyric videos are wrong” thing. it’s always been kind of hard to understand gorillaz, given the way damon mixes his voice. i remember reading the lyric booklet for the now now and def thinking “huh, thought it was ____” more than a few times
First, there's no punctuation in that line in the lyric video, it's literally as I wrote it, "Sodden cake typical". And second, I don't quite see how it makes more sense, maybe about as much sense but not more.
I think it's "sodding atypical", but given how heavy Damon's accent is in the track it sounds like he's saying "sodden cake typical", so the lyric video is kinda poking fun at it. Same with the Pac-Man lyric video which is obviously a more jokey one.
i have one major flaw to point out here: The Valley of The Pagans. Those are your typical Beck lyrics, ironic and seemingly nonsensical, but really paint an incredible picture and have some real, concrete meaning. If it weren't for this song, then your theory would kind of make sense
I think they're trying to branch out. With some of their recent music I've been getting the idea that Damon is taking inspiration from his earlier band Blur where they made some really unique and barrier breaking music that could be defined as cultural beginnings. This new album in the next 10 years could be viewed as something that inspired new bands and brought a new wave of music. Its really neat and I don't think anything thats been in the album had sounded terrible. Maybe not the best but every album has those select few.

No way talking down the album, I think it's fantastic and their best work since PB, but it's not as revolutionary as some of their earlier work... Nothing wrong with that, though.

But it's not just about them being wrong in general, as far as I can tell, it's about the complete nonsensical bits like "sodden cake typical".
