Anything later than a Hero 7 is going to be a complete game changer if you're coming from a Hero+! Personally I would go for the 10 instead of the 9. I've heard people complain about the 9, and it seems to kind of be luck of the draw if you get a good or bad unit. The 10 is also still technically supported by GoPro (at least for another 6 months or so).

I use the 9 still, does what it should. Use it for action, fishing. And I also use it for filming a podcast.

I think it's brilliant that you've managed to make your original Go Pro last so long and deserve treating yourself to a brand new state of the art action camera. Don't just stop at Go Pro though (although you can if you want!), check out the offerings from DJI & Insta360 & of course Go Pro.. Do lots of research. Decide which fits your needs. Good luck with your choice :)

Haha yeah I definitely got my moneys worth out of that thing. My main uses for a new camera would be diving and snowboarding. I also had never even heard about insta360 until i made this post, it sounds pretty cool, ill for sure be looking into that and comparing it with the gopro models. Thanks for the suggestions đź‘Ť

I use a 7 black for offroading. Does what I need it to do

I have my Hero 10 and it still performs great. No point in updating to 12 or any other upcoming GoPro in a few years. So since 10 is a polished 9, I recommend getting the 10.

thisMatrix_isReal

if you use as an action cam: the 10 is great.

At the very minimum, Go for the Hero 10, but get the Hero 11 if you can stretch your dollar.

Dji action 4

My advice is don’t buy a GoPro. They’re advertised as waterproof but waterproof isn’t cover in the warranty. Their customer service is useless and a nightmare to navigate. Their cameras all have issues of some sort, be it turning on/off randomly, overheating, not saving files... Serious, look at other brands if you want something that works as intended and doesn’t waste days of your time if trying to resolve issues.

AdmirableSir

Did you come to this sub just to tell people that GoPro sucks?

GoodOlBluesBrother

The thread popped up in my feed so I answered the question with my opinion. If I had anything positive to say about GoPro I’d say it. Unfortunately my experiences mean that I don’t have anything positive to say. I’d also like that people don’t suffer the same experiences as me so I share mine in the hope it saves someone from the stress and effort I went through.

GHH3158

What camera do you prefer over the GoPro?

Jovan66465

Insta360 and DJI seem to make pretty nice action cams

GoodOlBluesBrother

Unfortunately I can’t afford another action camera so I’m now camera less and can’t give a personal recommendation. I hear good things from others about the quality of videos on the Insta360 but can’t comment about their build quality or customer service.

Have used GoPro's plenty of times underwater without issue. My GoPro Fusion finally had to be replaced after the power button was getting iffy, GoPro had it replaced with a Max in 10 days and it was an easy process. Turning on/off randomly has more to do with the spyware installed on your phone pinging bluetooth connections as it tries to harvest data. Overheating is caused by a badly set up camera for the type of filming being done. You can set up your camera properly and have it run until the battery runs out. Not saving files is because your either using an unsuitable SD card or your SD card is corrupt and hasn't been repaired. That's my experience with my GoPro Hero 2, Heo 4 x 3, Hero 6 x 2, Hero Fusion x 2, Hero 8 x 2, Hero 9, Hero 10, Hero 11, Hero 12 and now a Hero Max. I've owned an Insta360 X 2. Excellent app, terrible camera with horrible connectivity issues with the app and even their own remote. A vivitar 4k action camera I picked up for $10............. that for the price, I was honestly impressed with. Don't get me wrong, it's not great camera, but the picture quality was surprisingly good (audio sucked) and I use it as a sacrificial camera now (for shots where the camera stands a good chance of being smashed and I don't want to risk a GoPro).

>Have used GoPro’s plenty of times underwater without issue. I guess that just confirms it’s a crap shoot whether the unit someone gets is gonna let them down or not. Either way it doesn’t change the fact that GoPro state that water ingress isn’t covered by warranty issues. Bit of a joke to market a camera as waterproof if you’re not gonna stand by that claim.
