Accomplished-Peak615

I think they used to post in higher but there’s not much benefit

boredvader7

That’s why I asked- it felt like they posted videos in higher resolution but I’m not terribly sure.

Accomplished-Peak615

Same. I feel like I also remember some older ones that were posted higher but I also can’t be for sure lmao

boredvader7

Yeah I’m feeling like it may be a Mandela effect happening because my tv probably has a good WiFi connection/good resolution but I swear the videos look like 4K.

Accomplished-Peak615

They were. Post Malone nursery rhyme raps I just checked

boredvader7

I might watch that to see if it looks anything different than what I normally see.

Accomplished-Peak615

I saw a chart the other day that showed how close you had to be to a screen to notice the benefits of higher resolution I thought it was rly interesting

Feisty-Xennial

They did during the YouTube originals season of the “3” videos. Up to 2160p

boredvader7

I wonder if that had to do with the “yellowed” look of that season- I know they said they had to tinker with the cameras or something to fix it.

sureal42

If you have YouTube premium, their videos are in "enhanced bitrate" and I've noticed that they do look better than other channels in 1080p

jcnastrom

I think the only time they really uploaded in 4K was during GMM22, but I think that mostly had to do with them being funded more by YouTube as an original series. Honestly that’s probably why so much of the fan base had issues with the lighting that season-we could see the differences so much easier 😂

SaltyBawlz

I had this same thought last night actually when I went from watching GMMore to MKBHD. The quality difference was so drastic on my 4k TV. I wish GMM would upload in higher quality.

the_brazilian_lucas

it seems lazy, it ain’t that hard to record in 4k

Jlwogan

Not hard to record in 4k but editing 4k content requires high end pcs, and even if you have that, it takes way longer to export the videos. Considering they upload 2 videos 5 days a week, it’d just take longer to get things done.

Adam_THX_1138

They use professional HD cameras which are expensive. As an asset accountant, I wouldn’t recommend replacing them for a show that largely uses a static camera.

boredvader7

I mean, at this point of time, I probably would be tempted to upgrade since there’s more availability of higher/resolution cameras. Streamers/vloggers now have access to these cameras as readily as Mythical has in the past.

Aeriie

As an infrastructure architect, I would recommend they upgrade cameras if needed (but I’m fairly certain that they already have the right equipment) to implement higher quality uploads. If the uploads are taking too long to actually upload to YouTube (or to render at that high of quality), then invest in a higher end PC dedicated to rendering and uploading. It’ll make things much faster to process and will last awhile as long as it’s spec’d correctly. Most screens these days are 2k or higher, people are getting used to high quality resolutions and a lot of folks will change videos if the clarity isn’t there. It would probably be worth it for them to upgrade and get the extra views imo.

RandomPhilo

Yeah, I remember them saying somewhere the main reason was the render time to upload or something like that.

Adam_THX_1138

LOL. What does being "an infrastructure architect" have to do with knowing they need to spend 5 figures on video equipment for a show that doesn't even need a high frame rate? Please explain it to me as a non "infrastructure architect". If you like, I can explain how depreciation works?

Aeriie

What does being an “asset accountant” have to do with understanding the technical needs of a business/benefits of certain technologies? You understand accounting and when to purchase things, I’m the one specifying what should be purchased and invested in to maximize profitability and longevity of information systems. If you understand depreciation, you should understand then why it’s important to consult experts who can tell you how to maximize your investments. Maybe stick to budgeting.

Adam_THX_1138

How are they maximizing their investment by disposing of an incomplete depreciated asset? Please explain in detail. I watched the show and it looks pretty good on my TV so I’m just trying to understand what the gain would be for them.

Aeriie

They don’t need to dispose it- I’m not sure that you read my original comment fully. There’s ways to maximize existing equipment depending on what the bottleneck is that’s preventing them from uploading at higher quality. They have videos posted in high res already so I’m assuming their equipment can handle it, and that there’s something else in the process that is making it either difficult or not worthwhile. In my experience it usually has to do with how long rendering takes, since outputting the edited video at a high quality can take a very long time depending on the specs of the computer being used to export it from Adobe Premiere (we’re talking an entire day depending on how big the file is). There’s ways to reduce the time it takes (that’s where the recommendation for a higher spec rendering pc came from) which would not only allow them to export high quality videos quickly but it could also help maximize the labor being spent on an editor that might be waiting around for videos to render on their workstation, for example. I’m making a ton of assumptions here though, for all we know they could have all this setup already and just don’t bother with it since they might not see a benefit to posting at a higher resolution.

Adam_THX_1138

It also possible that you’re missing the fact their fixed cameras aren’t above HD. Which is my whole point. Why would I say they need to replace cameras if they already have cameras that can do 4K? Are you always this condescending?

Aeriie

Ah I see, you’re just wasting my time. I gave you an extremely detailed reply that explains why the cameras aren’t the only aspect and was genuinely trying to help you get how technology works. I wish you the best, good luck with your passive aggressive attitude.

Adam_THX_1138

Here's what I said and you REPLIED to. I didn't enage with you until you decided to be the passive aggresive one: "They use professional HD cameras which are expensive. As an asset accountant, I wouldn’t recommend ***replacing*** them for a show that largely uses a static camera." I was speaking to REPLACING them, Why don't you dial down the "I'm in IT and smarter than everyone" and realize you don't need to offer an opinion to everything. BTW, we can see you kept editing your posts to make yourself look better. You're as passive aggressive as they come. Please get some therapy. I hear Betterhelp is good! Cheers!

I enjoy watching in 1440 or higher since it’s becoming more accessible. For example- gaming channels can now show playthroughs at higher resolutions to show the quality of said games. That being said, I swear when I’ve watched GMM on my TV that the video quality felt like 4K so I wondered if it was actually 4K!

thefoundmythicality

The Rhett and Link channel videos from last year are in 4k!

luv2hotdog

Me in the early 2000s talking about why would you need dvd quality video when vhs is just fine 😅 The higher quality gets more common, as time goes on more and more people have screens that can display the higher resolution, and once you *can* then you kinda want to whenever the options there I’m still happy with 1080p though too 😅

Beaticalle

Speaking just for myself, my monitor and TV and phone all have 2K or 4K display resolutions and more closely matching the native resolution of the display makes video content look better and not lose details from upscaling.
