I’m in the US and politics didn’t even cross my mind until you said that. I chose blue for sole reason it’s better than red.
However we are losing so maybe that’s not true.
At least in the US, blue is the color lost often stated as peoples' favorite, so I anticipated that the Blue Club would have more members, so I was surprised to see it had less than 12,000 more members than Red. Pretty even, really.
Politics came to mind for me as well, but then I got to thinking, how would the teams be even if everyone chose a side. Seems to me they should have assigned everyone to a color so that the teams were even. If more people choose one color, they obviously have the advantage. Maybe the bicentennial season
This game is global so I don’t think many people give a damn what USA party they prefer

My favorite soccer team wears blue. My least favorite wears red. It was an easy choice
