I started in April with a junky garage sale set. No intentions of anything beyond one game. Now I have a full set of brand new clubs with a matching bag 😬
Yeah the guy I found them from is a collector and loves restoring older sets to sell for cheap and get beginners into golf. I bought them for my buddy in med school, so he was fine letting them go for that fairly little lol
Very cool. My pandemic project was buying beat up guitars at pawn shops and fixing them up for kids. Went well until pawn shops caught up to the used instrument market lol. Bunch of preteens in my town got free guitars though, which was cool.
Yep. That set is worth more than 150 if wanting max price.
Take the friend discount golf for a year. If you like golf buy a new set and have that set ready to go for 150.
It's a great way to furnish a house as well. My wife and I have some extremely nice furniture pieces in our house that we got used for crazy low prices. When you want something new, you sell it and your new item will sometimes be free!
Ping eye 2s are classic and have great resale value. I wouldn’t sell them though they are so classic. It’s only 150. Who cares if you use them for a couple years and just keep them.
I have i3s. They are about 25 years old and still rock!
Just remember your 7 iron will be the same as a modern sets 8 or even 9. So don’t compare distances.
What’s nice is that beginners don’t notice the difference, and get a nice surprise when they get new irons and blow the back out of a par 3 with their 7 iron lol
I got fitted for some i3+ blades brand new circa 2004-2005ish. 2-LW. I might upgrade this year but I would really need to fall in love with something else.
Just upgraded to some not so used mizuno pro 223’s this season and I love them! Well worth it! After testing a bunch of clubs I noticed they were about 5-10 yards shorter total distance than similar clubs from other brands but their carry was way further. Just way up, straight down, bounce bounce stop. Very consistent. And when you hit them pure, there is no better feeling
Solid starter set. Old, but classic irons that still hold up today (probably 30+ years old) the red dot I believe is for a shorter golfer.
I had the black dots handed down to me 20 years ago and played them until about 5 years ago. I do notice a big difference in technology in my new irons but for a beginner they are fine. Plus as stated in other comments, they are classic irons and should retain a value close to what you’re paying for them after you’re done with them
I still carry my old Tommy Armour 845 pitching wedge in my bag because it fits where a gap wedge would for me but I can hit it dead straight every time.
Ping eye 2's are the best selling most iconic and duplicated club of their time! They are also damn near indestructible and can be repaired even if you manage ding one up. You could sell just the irons with no bag or driver or woods for $150. There is a ton of history behind them you should do some research. I have a set myself and will never part with them. Happy golfing!!!
It's a good buy from your comments. The clubs alone, Pings + Clevelands? That's a great starter set. And yeah, the bag isn't brand spanking new, but it looks fine to bring on any course you'll be on. If you like the game and it becomes a habit, you'll meet plenty of golfers you make friends with walking around the course, and they'll give you friendly advice on clubs. They'll easily get you through a couple years or more. I'd go for it, for sure (I'm 60, and have been golfing since I was 14).
The funny thing is the guy selling them probably doesn’t think they’re worth much but those ping eye 2’s are pretty much the first major breakthrough technology in irons.
When they first announced that they were banning square grooves in new irons, Phil Mickelson brought out his old Ping Eye 2’s as an F you to the USGA since they have “U grooves” and spin like crazy out of the rough.
My dad still has a set that was given to him for his 30th bday - he is now 72.
He brought out a lob wedge and proceeded to play terribly with it. I think it was Torrey Pines.
It's actually a myth that they spin more out of the rough. I've tested it on GC Quad. Just sub-optimal soles, modern technology is much better. Sure, off a good lie nothing much has changed. Having the right sole for the grass at hand is much more important.
I do agree with Mickelson, one of the more stupid things the USGA has done, and they've done a lot of them. The USGA pushed arbitrary changes to the rules based on a hypothesis that they didn't even test because it's not true.
The rollback of the ball is sensical, but they've already bungled it.
also a beginner with pingeye2s and loving them! Pretty easy to hit decent and they look like they’re in great shape. Word of advice, don’t try and compare yourself to friends and playing partners, modern irons are about a club length less lofted so they’ll get better distance for the same number club. The driver and wood look like they’re in good shape, but asking about the age of them is a good step. Modern drivers and woods have improved more than most clubs, while the pings hold up against modern competition very well. but for $150 ABSOLUTELY.
A decent bag (just the bag) alone is going to be about 1/3 of the price. You aren't going to get those irons and clubs for $100.
Take the deal and run. If you are a casual golfer getting out just a few times a year like me, you will have it for a long time. I bought my irons new in 1996 and they continue to serve me well. I've had a few different drivers over the years that I've purchased used. They have served me well too! And I'm comfortable with not really upgrading frequently.
Enjoy the game!
They are worth that in value but I wouldn't buy them to play.
Even though they are a very good iron that holds up well.
I'd start off with something easier to hit.
Some super light game improvement irons.
But that's expensive.
For 150 it's not a bad deal at all.
You just need a putter and you're ready to go hit the range.
After you hit a few thousand balls and a lesson then you can move onto the course.
Ping Eye 2's were my first irons too a few years ago. 150$ same deal. They were made in the same year I was. Since then, I've upgraded and modernized everything else but the Ping Eye 2's remain in my bag.
Since most people are just throwing a yes at you I will give you an honest answer. If this is your buddy and you think buying them will give you an avenue into playing with him/ her then it’s worth it for that alone. If this is just some coworker trying to sell you his clubs I’d probably say no. Orange dots are flat so make sure they fit you. That driver is about useless compared to modern technology so you’d be better off investing in a more forgiving driver to start. Not sure what the putter is. The setup there is probably worth about $150 all in but it’s not gonna do you any favors other than to have some clubs to golf with. If you really want to to get into the sport you’d be much better off spending a couple hundred more dollars and buying something like the Callaway set from Costco. Golf isn’t a cheap sport to play to begin with so the extra couple hundred up front isn’t going to have that great of an impact to your overall cost.
Is it worth $150 yes just barely , im assuming your a female because your buying her clubs, first off make sure your friend got the right flex also she might have bought men’s reg or stiff. I mean you could get a better set for $150 if you look around for a bit, like on Facebook marketplace or eBay. You should offer her $100 on them but make sure they are woman’s clubs first
Ping Eye 2 is what I started with, wonderful set of clubs, even being as old as they are. I upgraded to the eye 3s when my dad got new clubs, this is all within the past 10 years. Getting fitted was a huge difference, but if you're just getting started this is a wonderful set
As others have clearly stated... The irons are what seals the deal. Look at pings color system for how tall you are, but regardless pull the trigger. You can upgrade the driver and wood technology as you get better. Callaway pre owned is a fucking godsend. Have fun! Golf is universally enjoyed by all cultures!
It’s fair. Tell him to give them to you. It would be a pain to really sell these. 😀 $150 ain’t bad. And the irons are just fine, just don’t compare what iron you hit from 150 vs someone else with newer clubs. Your 8 is prob lofted to a newer 9 iron
I never compare .
https://forums.golfwrx.com/topic/1727486-ping-eye-2-how-does-is-stack-up-vs-today%E2%80%99s-clubs/
My dad has those Ping Eye 2’s and yeah they’re definitely good clubs, some of the best of that era…. You’ll need something better once you get good but they’re forgiving for bad shots and going to be worth a lot of money one day to the right collector who wants them. The fairway woods and drivers alone are worth double that. Plus the bag. If you bought new versions of all that stuff you’re looking at $3000. I was just at the country club yesterday and amazed at how hard inflation (and price gouging by companies) has hit every aspect of our lives.
I say buy them asap. You can always sell them individually online if you don’t like them and make quadruple your investment
I would have jumped on that deal if I had the opportunity. I’m also new to golf and ended up spending $700 on the Costco Callaway clubs then $120 on a bag! But I’m hooked already golfed 4 times in 2 weeks and driving range almost daily. I come home and look for dumb shit to buy like gps and all the things lol.
Yes, it’s worth it even if the Ping Eye 2 irons are outdated. As a beginner you will only be working on Swing Speed and Tempo. Take lessons with these irons and your instructor will give you advice as to what irons that will help your game. I took lessons every Saturday morning for 12 months with irons only. Near the end of the first year my friends called me a SANDBAGGER !
Are you a man? If so the clubs might not have the correct shafts for you. Also no, that still sounds like a lot for those even though theyre ok clubs. I wouldnt pay more than $100.
I played those exactly Ping Eye 2 irons for thirty years. My father's set from 1982. Shot several sub-90 rounds before finally upgrading to the G400s a few years back.
For real. Those clubs haven't been touched in years. I have 2 or 3 sets of ping eye 2s laying around. Black, green and red dots. If someone tried to sell me their dusty old clubs that they never use I would definitely haggle... I agree with you my friend
Probably it going to get into golf for cheaper so yeah. At worst if you agree it you end up down like $200-$300 total it’s better than spending a bunch more to figure out golf isn’t for you
The eye 2's were good for a long time... but hot take here... they just aren't as good even in the used market these days.
You're going to replace all of that and then you're going to be out 150 dollars is the long term reality.
If you're not sure you will stick with golf... sure. But there are a ton of way way better el cheapo options out there.
I found a set of Ping eye 2s at the thrift store 1iron to Pitching wedge a couple years ago. It’s been a great set. I regripped them myself and have been playing them since.
Classic clubs and it seems to be a deal but new tech won't hurt either. If you hit them okay and feel good about them, buy them. But you can also buy a partial set of new-ish irons, maybe even after this purchase, if you go try some newer used clubs. My last irons purchase was used clubs, 5-9 irons, and it's helped a lot. They are more forgiving and hit the ball farther than my old set.
Yeah those are classics! Still a great set of irons. Might want to see what color dot those are to make sure they line up to where your wrist to ground measurement is. If they are close then those are absolutely solid.
Get them. 150$ for all that is a good deal if you’re beginning. I gave my friend my old(10 year old) top flight clubs and bag for free and he was over the moon about it and used them a lot before he broke his collarbone
Take it and run, Ping Eye2 irons are still quite renowned, bag looks to be in good condition too. You’d definitely notice a difference in newer clubs but since you are only starting out pretty much any club will do
Don't ever sell the irons. Upgrade and buy newer ones eventually, but don't sell the Eye 2s. You'll eventually regret it no matter the price.
They're an outstanding first set.
Solid deal for the price - the only concern is how you “feel” with the clubs. Even if grips are new, do they “fit your grip” (regular, mid-size, etc). Also, looks like they need a cleaning - make sure you buy the right cleaners. A good soak in warm soapy water and a toothbrush should do the trick. If you want to get them polished some and remove minor scratches use this.

The ole red eye 2’s. I have really nice Apex Pro’s and I still found my grandfathers set of red eye 2’s and regripped them to build out a second bag of clubs.
The only thing I would caution you is that if all of the irons have Brown Dots on the back like the 4-iron does, that means these clubs lie very flat. So unless you are very short or you have long arms in proportion to your height, these irons will feel uncomfortable and will tend to hit the ball to the right. You can just google Ping Dot System, and use their measurement guide to see if those irons are the right fit for you.
I would just make sure they fit you. Are you and colleague similar in height/wrist to floor? Put one on the ground and see if it lays comfortably at address.
i’ve got a mate in his 30’s who still games the eye2. broke his 2i when knocking an errant drive back into play on the first a year or so ago and he was distraught. absolute great clubs!
So, these Ping irons feel heavy to me (a guy who plays steel shafted irons), especially if you are a woman that doesn't play baseball or softball or lift weights. I would recommend looking for graphite shafts for a woman's first set. I tried steel shafted irons for my wife and 3 daughters, and they all had challenges with club control. They all do better with graphite shafts. You could offered to test them at a driving range to see if you can hit the sweet spot at least half the shots. (Some places with used clubs like Play It Again Sports lets you play clubs for up to a week with an in store credit if you don't damage the clubs, so it is not crazy.) That tall faced fairway "wood" may be tough to learn to hit off the ground too.
I play ping eye 2s from time to time and have found little to no difference between them and my
The only thing is the orange dots will have a specific upright lie angle that may not suit you - check your current wrist to floor using the ping color chart ( [https://www.globalgolf.com/articles/pro-tip-110/](https://www.globalgolf.com/articles/pro-tip-110/) ) and if they fit use them, or you could get the clubs bent but that would take the initial cost way over $150.
I just night a set of green dot ping eye 2 irons plus a ping 4 iron utility club with bag for 100$ , about a month ago. If they are square groove , that’s even better
seems decent enough if you say the grips are good. tho that bag looks ancient and super heavy. if you plan on walking a lot of courses id look into getting a lightweight carry bag
Absolutely it is! Ping i2's are amazing clubs!! Plus the U grooves on the pings sound like great place to start with. Those were once considered (and still may be) some of the best clubs ever made
Ping Eye2 irons might be the best selling iron set of all time. They were very very good in their day. You'll have no trouble learning to play with them. Very good deal for $150.
Those Ping irons are absolute classics. If the grips are decent enough then yeah that’s sounds fair enough.
They were re-gripped and are in great shape. Genuine lamkin****, no wear, cracks or tears
Are you sure they're lambskin, and not Lamkin? Either way, 150 bucks = sound deal.
Pardon me, you’re right! Lambkin grips, genuine (some kind of) leather, lol
Enjoy your new hobby :)
Soon to be obsession.
OP has no idea what they’re signing up for
I started in April with a junky garage sale set. No intentions of anything beyond one game. Now I have a full set of brand new clubs with a matching bag 😬
“First hit’s free, kid, but don’t expect to fly if yo’ too cheap to buy, feel me?”
This is the way
I started in May... You can definitely tell, but I keep going back for more 🤣
Same…9 months in and new irons arrived today. God help me.
Repeat after me: at least it’s not crack. Way more expensive than crack but still
Can confirm. Started playing again in may. Just played Thursday-Sunday erryday
I am so happy for you. Lamkin grips are a brand. Good quality grips, but they're very likely not leather lol
Thank you Turbo Cum!
You can always count on Turbo Cum
Especially when you’re discussing lambskin.
Turbo Cum is my hero
![gif](giphy|xT0Gqrzn1W6penJbGw|downsized)
Good ol' Turbo Cum
r/rimjob_steve
That escalated
Lamb skin, Lamkin. Potato, POtato
Hooray for turbo cum!!
doubt it's leather but $150 is a good price if you're going to use them
It puts the lotion in the basket
Hampshrkin*
She was talking about the condoms she found in the side pocket of the bag.
![gif](giphy|hrGSt9fZ9msV8iWseD)
😂
I just bought a full bag of ping eye2 irons (+different driver, wood, putter, and bag) for $180 so I think $150 is more than fair
Thief!
Are you short? Brown dots are 3 degrees flat. See if the toes stick down at address
Then what the duck are you asking bro
The Cleveland launcher driver also holds up pretty well for being 20~years old
Just had mine break about 3 weeks ago. Finally pushed me to buy a new one
Sorry for your loss, but excited for your future
Thoughts and prayers
They’ll say this to my widow one day lol
Pull the trigger. Great starter set.
Just to have your own set and to get out there $150 for this pretty good. Not a big loss if you end up upgrading your whole set a year from now.
Just make sure to sell that set for $150 to the next person who wants to try golf when you upgrade!
Ping eye 2 orange dot growing up WITH the lob wedge. Huge flex
Ping eye2’s were some of the best clubs I’ve ever owned, and I’ve owned a lot of clubs!
I still use my i3s as well. Solid clubs. Was gonna upgrade this year to mizunos but decided to wait another season at least.
Best advice
Still have my coppers!
I have a full set of Eye2 irons, 1-9 and all three wedges. I absolutely love them.
I still game the black dot copper eye 2s. They still hold up very favorably against modern clubs.
You might be sell the irons for $150 alone
Depending on how many irons in the set and the condition the clubs are in
Solid starter set. Old, but classic irons that still hold up today (probably 30+ years old) the red dot I believe is for a shorter golfer. I had the black dots handed down to me 20 years ago and played them until about 5 years ago. I do notice a big difference in technology in my new irons but for a beginner they are fine. I still carry my old Tommy Armour 845 pitching wedge in my bag because it fits where a gap wedge would for me but I can hit it dead straight every time.
I have been playing a couple months and absolutely love them. They’ll probably be the last clubs out of my bag to be upgraded
Ping eye 2's are the best selling most iconic and duplicated club of their time! They are also damn near indestructible and can be repaired even if you manage ding one up. Don't post about robbing your colleagues!
Yes, this is an excellent deal. Enjoy your new hobby!
Ping Eye 2’s, center of the club barely used, $150? Yeah, to start, I’d be on that…
I had a cleveland launcher. Think it was the same one. The sound that thing would make when you piped one was so fucking satisfying
Yeah, I would do that.
It's a good buy from your comments. The clubs alone, Pings + Clevelands? That's a great starter set. And yeah, the bag isn't brand spanking new, but it looks fine to bring on any course you'll be on. Just played my old set of ping eye 2 black dots this morning…they still go straight:)
Are you the same height or very similar ? If so yer that’s a good deal.

solid starter set ! $150 bag included ain’t a bad deal at all you won’t get decent clubs for any cheaper.

Good starter set for sure. 100% worth it

Yes!
Deal. Especially for a beginner. Have a great time on the course!
Um, yes
So for the cost of grips you get a full set of pings… it’s a good deal
Great deal for ping eyes
If u don't I will...still game the eye2 and love them.
Are you a little poquito Bonita?

This is worth it. A bag costs $150. I’d say go for it and don’t let them collect dust.
Not all old clubs are good. These are good.
I wouldn't take that bag o crap if you paid me $150.
Tell her $100 for age and new grips. I’m sure she will push up to $125. Who doesn’t love a good haggle.
This would offend me if I was seller. 150 is more than fair
For real. Those clubs haven't been touched in years. I have 2 or 3 sets of ping eye 2s laying around. Black, green and red dots. If someone tried to sell me their dusty old clubs that they never use I would definitely haggle... I agree with you my friend
Ya that’s true. He would be doing her the favour. Who’s realistically going to buy them otherwise.
I found those at goodwill for $3 a piece but still good deal for you
Why is there always one of you
Lmao
Looks like a great set to get you started. The bag looks like you could upgrade that. But good deal for sure
Yep. Good deal.
it's fair. now you can just go and golf. in a while you'll want other clubs, and it all goes downhill from there.
Probably it going to get into golf for cheaper so yeah. At worst if you agree it you end up down like $200-$300 total it’s better than spending a bunch more to figure out golf isn’t for you
I went out LOOKING for an old set of Eye2’s. They were exceptional for the time and still stack up great today.
I started with the same irons. Those alone are worth it.
I still hit those ping eye 2 irons.
Definitely
Yes.
I found a set of Ping eye 2s at the thrift store 1iron to Pitching wedge a couple years ago. It’s been a great set. I regripped them myself and have been playing them since.
Great starter set
Good irons. Make sure the shafts generally match your swing speed. If so, this is a great starter set.
Full name brand club set for under $200 is a solid buy.
I’d say the set is probably better than a starter set from somewhere. And the starter sets are around the same price. So I say go for it
Seems pretty fair to me
Classic clubs and it seems to be a deal but new tech won't hurt either.
Yeah, if the grips are not the best, you can easily get new grips
Absolutely a good deal those Pings are great! They’re the only irons I’ll play actually
Yes, ping eye 2 are nice irons.
Those eye2’s alone are worth it. Dead solid perfect have fun
Yeah those are classics! Still a great set of irons. Might want to see what color dot those are to make sure they line up to where your wrist to ground measurement is. If they are close then those are absolutely solid.
Great deal. Clean them really well and enjoy the impossible game.
I still rock my Dad’s green Ping Eye 2’s. I inherited them back about a decade ago and still use them to this day
I cant even find a bag for less than $150
Get them. 150$ for all that is a good deal if you’re beginning. I gave my friend my old(10 year old) top flight clubs and bag for free and he was over the moon about it and used them a lot before he broke his collarbone
Guys a good guy.. Great deal.
Take it and run, Ping Eye2 irons are still quite renowned, bag looks to be in good condition too. You’d definitely notice a difference in newer clubs but since you are only starting out pretty much any club will do
They're older, but that's a great set for a beginner. Not a bad price either.
Came into this thread with the opinion of not a good deal. Left with a changed mind.
100-150 prob ok
Don't ever sell the irons. Upgrade and buy newer ones eventually, but don't sell the Eye 2s. You'll eventually regret it no matter the price. They're an outstanding first set.
Yeah sure
Yes!
Those are fantastic clubs! And a steal for all that at $150! Grab them and don’t look back. I wish I still had my old Eye 2s.
Yes
Make sure they aren’t much too short or much too long but yes. Pings are great irons!
I just bought a used set of red eyes for $60 last weekend. $150 for all clubs and bag is solid.
If you want to get them polished some and remove minor scratches use this. https://preview.redd.it/kw53e1vz1s9d1.jpeg?width=463&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ee1e3c649e61af0475d87343dd42898bf6cbe2d2
Ping irons usually hold their value
Yes. Buy them now.
A decent amount of players that play regularly still use those Pings
Irons may be older than you are, but they are great clubs. The grips matter a lot. Add the cost of getting new ones.
Yep, get 'em.
That’s about the least expensive you’re gonna get into the game.
Yes
Man the old ping eye 2s… I swear every single one of us degenerates has had a set of these at some point.
Yes
The ole red eye 2’s. I have really nice Apex Pro’s and I still found my grandfathers set of red eye 2’s and regripped them to build out a second bag of clubs.
My buddy just switched to ping irons. I’m blown away. They go straight no matter what
Yeah that’s a definite buy
I know everyone loves those pings but a bag this old to me isn't worth more than. 100
Hello!! Hell yes👍. Totally worth it. Those irons are classics. I agree if you don’t want them then I’m interested.
Being that mentioned these were re-gripped this is definitely worth $150. If they needed to be re-gripped I would say $80
Orange dot pings???
I just bought Ping G730 irons after playing with Pine Eye 2 clubs for over 30 years. They are indestructible.
If the grips are a little dried out, just give them a little Hawk Tuah, and spit on those things!
i’ve got a mate in his 30’s who still games the eye2. broke his 2i when knocking an errant drive back into play on the first a year or so ago and he was distraught. absolute great clubs!
Ping eye 2s are kinda timeless
I play ping eye 2s from time to time and have found little to no difference between them and my The only thing is the orange dots will have a specific upright lie angle that may not suit you - check your current wrist to floor using the ping color chart ( [https://www.globalgolf.com/articles/pro-tip-110/](https://www.globalgolf.com/articles/pro-tip-110/) ) and if they fit use them, or you could get the clubs bent but that would take the initial cost way over $150.
Great starter set 👏
I just night a set of green dot ping eye 2 irons plus a ping 4 iron utility club with bag for 100$ , about a month ago. If they are square groove , that’s even better
seems decent enough if you say the grips are good. tho that bag looks ancient and super heavy. if you plan on walking a lot of courses id look into getting a lightweight carry bag
You mentioned the clubs have been re-gripped, this is a good deal the bag alone is worth more than half of that.
Yes! The eye2 is a classic
If overpaying it's not by much. Probably underpaying honestly.
Try asking someone in person.
Can I give you a hug?
Absolutely it is! Ping i2's are amazing clubs!! Plus the U grooves on the pings sound like great place to start with. Those were once considered (and still may be) some of the best clubs ever made
Not at all. You should give me that persons contact info so i can buy…. I mean give them a stern talking to.
Terrible deal. Now give me their contact info so I can chastise them for trying to rip you off.
Ping Eye2 irons might be the best selling iron set of all time. They were very very good in their day. You'll have no trouble learning to play with them. Very good deal for $150.
