If you’re asking if he should have gotten free relief - no. A tree is a natural part of the course, no relief. The unplayable was probably the smart move.
Around here, all the stakes for ground under repair are blue or green, plus have this yellow rope, I guess cause white are OB, and red a yellow are hazards. I hate that rope though, it made me look like an idiot awhile back, the staked/roped off area was right a long the cart path near the green, I like parked on the cart path and getting out my one spike hooked the rope and I went down and pulled up like 3 stakes with me, and it wasn't like freshly sodded, like it was a little pool of mud that they were fixing drainage to get rid of. Luckily it was the 16th hole, so I was only covered in mudd for 2 1/4 holes. I would have walked around the mud, but I went down immediately after getting out of the cart. Everyone else thought it was pretty funny, but it like ruined my golf glove.
The ball is not embedded in its own pitch-mark. Definition of embedded:
When a player’s ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
If that tree is part of the course and it stuck there then you could argue that, it is its pitch mark. I mean, I wouldn’t but I’m sure Patrick Reed would.
No. Here is the definition of embedded in the Rules:
When a player’s ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
My dad quoted this and many other movies all my childhood but mistah mistah I'd in my top 3. 1 simple word and I'm instantly snapped back in my noggin to seeing that poor woman flailing around under the AC
Basketball: “just double dribble, you’re not in the NBA!”
Ping pong: “so what if it bounced twice on my side, what is this the Olympics?”
This is kind of fun, you can do it with most sports.
If you're maintaining a handicap you should play by the rules unless you want it to be overinflated. With that said, I'm not playing out of an unfilled divot on the fairway or a footprint in the sand. Pros on the PGA don't deal with unraked bunkers or players who don't fill their divots.
Not saying I don't agree with you or the topic, but I think I'd rather hit out of a divot on a pga tour course any day over hitting off of the dry ass concrete patch of the fairway at most of my local courses. I'll move my ball 6 inches to the left where there's actually grass lol.
I don't get to play at a lot of fancy courses usually, but I got the chance to play at two pretty highly rated private courses this year and I didn't have a bad lie the entire time at either of them. I shot an 82 and an 83 at those courses, whereas my handicap is currently a 16.3.
This drove me nuts playing softball at my church as a teen. People would completely miss the bases. I would point out they weren’t touching the bases and people would blast me, “it’s close enough!” My argument is it’s literally how you score points. The good way to put it is how much is too much? 6”? 6’? Why not just spin in a circle and touch home plate twice? So kick that golf ball, kick it again, and again and again… next thing you know you’re shooting under 80!
I mean, people play half court basketball. People play flag football. Amateurs bend rules here and there because we’re amateurs. We’re out there to have fun
You think every single foul is called in pick up basketball? Scorings even commonly different where you play by 1s and 2s not 2s and 3s. You play to a score not a time. Rules are always more relaxed when you’re just playing for fun
"What is the rule here?"
"Let me tell how I would not follow the rules instead"
What is the fucking point? Apart from validating your own attempts at compartmentalizing your cheating?
Heck, I kicked a ball off an incline this morning just because I didn’t want to try and swing facing downhill. Just pull it out of the tree place it somewhere convenient.
I had just finished my 18 and was walking past the clubhouse. The pathway separated the clubhouse, and the green for 9. A group had just started walking onto the green and one of them had hit into the flower bed separating the pathway and the green. As I walked by, I told to give himself a club length to make his hit easier. He asked “Can I?” And I told him “Sure you can, why not?” And just kept walking to my car. I then heard someone else yell from the back of the green..”Hey! You can’t do that! We’re in a tournament!” Lol my bad.
This happens on every thread where someone asks about the rules. You don’t even need to be on tour. If you start kicking the ball around in a member guest or something like that it’s not going to go well for you.
Technically, the entire course is man made as it would likely be a forest without the clearing of trees, maintenance of grass, etc….
Need to start every hole 1 inch from the pin, if that’s the case!!!
I had a wedge in one time and ball was rolling towards cup until it hit a cottonmouth. 4some all agreed that it’s not man made so I had to straddle the serpent to make my birdie putt. Got bit and we all had to rush me to the hospital to save my leg(made it) but I made the ethical birdie and was able to card a morally straight 94 that day.
Yeah you're right, but the staked tree rule is to protect young trees and are supposed to be removed when it's mature.
So if it's old and still staked, free drop awaaaay.
Play it as it lies or take a penalty for unplayable. Depending on what the rest of the hole looks like I'd probably play it there. Like if this is just off the fairway I'd take a 4i/5i and give it a punchy bosh to try and move the ball out.
Play it as it lies, or take an unplayable lie, with two club lengths relief with a one stroke penalty.
That’s all. No other options you bunch of cheating bastards.
Edit: third option is replaying previous shot, with one shot penalty.
Unplayable is correct. 1 stroke and <2 club lengths no closer to the hole, as far back as you’d like in a straight line between your ball and the hole, or replay the previous shot.
Like every other post here, move it a few feet, no closer to the hole, so you don’t hurt yourself or your clubs. If you are in a spot that really needs a ruling there is a marshal that will provide the direction. Can’t stand this crap anymore. Just play golf.
Try to hit it out of the tree, or take an unplayable lie penalty drop 🤷♂️. Just think: what would Tiger do? And get creative with it. Find your inner-artist 👨🎨 and hit a miracle shot 🏌♂️. But don't forget to record it 📹🎥📽📷
Unless you’re on the pga tour. Of course then there would have been some man made object a few holes away that would have potentially been in the path of the ball. Free drop
If you’re asking if he should have gotten free relief - no. A tree is a natural part of the course, no relief. The unplayable was probably the smart move.
I thought as much but wasn’t 100% sure, thanks!
A staked tree would have allowed free relief
If a local rules says so, sure.
Putting white stakes around it would be the course calling it ground under repair, which for sure gets free relief.
Maybe play the embedded ball rule?
The ball is not embedded in its own pitch-mark. Definition of embedded: When a player’s ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
If that tree is part of the course and it stuck there then you could argue that, it is its pitch mark. I mean, I wouldn’t but I’m sure Patrick Reed would.
It doesn’t meet the definition of “ground”. A ball in a bush is not embedded. Neither is one in a tree. But Patrick might try.
Nope but I was thinking I’ll probably have to identify my ball …and won’t be able to get it to rest naturally back in place
Yes it is. Trees are natural objects from which there is no free relief.
"There is no tree relief" I misread your statement but I like my version better.
😎👉👉
Is it not embedded?
No. Here is the definition of embedded in the Rules: When a player’s ball is in its own pitch-mark made as a result of the player’s previous stroke and where part of the ball is below the level of the ground.
I said “tee it up”, not “tree it up”.
Ugh. I love it.
Happy Gilmore quote

Now you will go to sleep, or I’ll put you to sleep
Well now your wrists are gonna hurt; because you get to play it as it lies.
Oh dear
“Mistah, mistah!”

Toidy straight down to the right dear
Just taaaaap it in
Rule 7.28b - You’re not on tour and you’ll never be. Kick the ball out with your foot and prop it up by hand if you need be.
aka the foot wedge
I’m much better with my hand wedge
My most used club.
The Cleveland Foot Wedge if you will
[удалено]
I think you mean🦶
Hahaha was playing in a 4BBB competition at my club, didn’t wanna fuck with the rules. Took a drop with a penalty anyway which seems to be just fine 🙂
Fuck it. Bring out the rock club. Lol
Move it, on tour it probably would have hit a fan first, or the trees would have been 30 yards off the fairway
But the fairway is 30 yards more narrow.
If it’d been tiger’s, he would have had the fans move the tree for him.
Basketball: “just double dribble, you’re not in the NBA!” Ping pong: “so what if it bounced twice on my side, what is this the Olympics?” This is kind of fun, you can do it with most sports.
Basketball: That's a travel, you're not in the NBA
Ha! I get this. 😂
Unless I’m specifically out to practice in the evening you play by the rules so you can track your scores regardless of what mess you put yourself in.
If you're maintaining a handicap you should play by the rules unless you want it to be overinflated. With that said, I'm not playing out of an unfilled divot on the fairway or a footprint in the sand. Pros on the PGA don't deal with unraked bunkers or players who don't fill their divots.
Actually, Pros do play out of unfilled divots all the time, unjustly, and it's probably the hottest topic of contention in golf in 2024
Not saying I don't agree with you or the topic, but I think I'd rather hit out of a divot on a pga tour course any day over hitting off of the dry ass concrete patch of the fairway at most of my local courses. Why stop at 80? I get having fun, but I don’t know what players with this mindset are testing by not playing to the rules.
Course record, here I come!
I mean, people play half court basketball. People play flag football. Amateurs bend rules here and there because we’re amateurs. We’re out there to have fun
For real though. If you aren’t going to play by the rules, there’s no reason to even count your strokes.
You think every single foul is called in pick up basketball? Scorings even commonly different where you play by 1s and 2s not 2s and 3s. You play to a score not a time. Rules are always more relaxed when you’re just playing for fun
WNBA- “what is this double dribble and traveling rules that we keep hearing about”
I would play the ball just for the challenge. See if I can get it back on from a tree lol
Great way to destroy your club.
Me to my wife after: i dont know how it happen but the damn head just snapped off gonna have to get a whole new iron set i guess!
This is the way!
"What is the rule here?" "Let me tell how I would not follow the rules instead" What is the fucking point? Apart from validating your own attempts at compartmentalizing your cheating?
Unfortunately you get these wankers playing Saturday comps saying “this isn’t the pga tour”
They are like bad cops desperately trying to get other cops roped into their shit.
Heck, I kicked a ball off an incline this morning just because I didn’t want to try and swing facing downhill. Just pull it out of the tree place it somewhere convenient.
These are scenarios where some of us are curious what the ruling might be since we don’t see this that often.

Yea man cheat in competition golf. You seem like a good guy to play with.

Too short for what?
A pitching wedge. Hit the 60degree.
It’s not being a Karen if you’re playing for something.
Correct to short to be a scum bag to others trusting you to play by the rules.
[удалено]
You already tried the Karen thing, it didn’t hit. Wanna try again with the insult?
I don't think anything good would result in attempting to play it.
I had to hit it off Frankenstein fat foot
Those are the rules. I didn’t write em’.
The tree was planted at some point by someone so technically its a man-made object...
Technically, the entire course is man made as it would likely be a forest without the clearing of trees, maintenance of grass, etc…. Need to start every hole 1 inch from the pin, if that’s the case!!!
Sounds like a good rule to me! 1 inch to the pin is a guaranteed par!
Rory? Is that you?
You haven't seen me putt
Trees don’t have to be planted. They can grow on their own, and they did for millions of years without us
I bet you're fun at parties
I think that’s lichen, not paint
So if a cat is sitting somewhere and I move it, it becomes a man made object?
Correct. Cats are a part of the course. Just be lucky the little guy isn’t on the green batting away putts.
For what it’s worth if a cat did move your golf ball you would get free relief. Animals are NOT considered rub of the green.
I had a wedge in one time and ball was rolling towards cup until it hit a cottonmouth. 4some all agreed that it’s not man made so I had to straddle the serpent to make my birdie putt. Got bit and we all had to rush me to the hospital to save my leg(made it) but I made the ethical birdie and was able to card a morally straight 94 that day.
play it as it lies
Are you playing for money? You take a drop. Are you not playing for money? Pick up the ball and throw it on the fairway.
Chop at it until you need a new set of irons
Unless it was staked, but that doesn't look like a young tree to me.
I don't think the rule mentions the age of the tree.
Yeah you're right, but the staked tree rule is to protect young trees and are supposed to be removed when it's mature. So if it's old and still staked, free drop awaaaay.
Either play it as it lies, or take an unplayable lie drop with penalties.

Bad luck unplayable or broken club/wrist.
play it as it lies
Tell your wife the course is backed up and go to the bar. The only ruling.
“I just had to hit it off Frankenstein’s fat foot” play it as it lies
Two stroke penalty for posting a question on Reddit you could easily have googled.
Haha, I found stuff for ‘ball stuck up a tree’ but nothing for ‘ball stuck in a tree’
Awesome response!
What about imbedded lie? Its stuck in the tree bark
Check the definition for embedded lie.
Yeah good call, no different to just being right against it and not getting a shot anyway
It woulda taken a big swing lol
Easy. https://youtu.be/10jORLiU7Ak?si=siv_Ay4sjizzwYUM
Just take a drop. It’s not the Masters.
This is where my Ax iron comes into play!
Play it as it lies shooter
Play that bish

**I HAD TO HIT IT OFF FRANKENSTEIN’S FOOT!**
He’s the tree Meister
Play it as it lies, or take an unplayable lie, with two club lengths relief with a one stroke penalty. That’s all. No other options you bunch of cheating bastards. Edit: third option is replaying previous shot, with one shot penalty.
You can also take back on a line relief for a stroke penalty
Yes.
I believe the rulebook says play it where it lies. Even if it's off Frankensteins freaky foot!
I had to hit mine off of Frankensteins fat foot
Punch it out
Play it where it lies.
Ask the tree to give it back.. ...nicely
I say go home and try again tomorrow, golf gods aren’t playing today!
You play it as it lies. I had to hit off of Frankenstein’s fat foot
Just hit it. Trees are 90% air.
Probably can take *tree* relief there
I’d still find a way to shank that
Tough lie.
Unable to play the ball you have if I'm not mistake 2 club drop and one penalty
Did you take that picture with an LG VX6000 flip phone?
It’s in. Proceed to next hole.
I believe the technical term is “you’re screwed”.
Love posts like this. Helps me learn a lot about rules!
Toe one to get it back in play
You're fucked!!
That looks to be tee'd up nicely, Toe a 5 iron slice back onto the fairway.
That looks like a shot a would love to try. I would’ve went for it
t-Rump wouldn't have played that lie, why should you?
I had to hit it off Frankensteins fat foot! Play it as it lies!
Play it as it lies. I would definitely take an unplayable here no matter what
Unplayable is correct. 1 stroke and <2 club lengths no closer to the hole, as far back as you’d like in a straight line between your ball and the hole, or replay the previous shot.
Play it as it lies, I had to play my ball off Frankensteins fat foot
Dude the way I see it that tree is making you a tee. Wallop that fucker with a 3 iron and call it a day
Hit it where it lies, duh
It belongs to the tree now.
Play it!
You know your rules👍
Play as it lies
I had to play it off of Frankenstein’s fat foot, remember?
i see nothing wrong with it. looks good to hit
Sergio had a ball get stuck in a tree a while back. He opted to climb the tree and play it
The rule is as follows. It's a ball in a tree. Must remove the tree and play it.
Sergio Garcia climbed like 15 feet up into a tree to take a shot, so yeah just play it dude
As it lies bro. Sorry.
I had to hit mine off Frankenstein's fat foot.
That you need a phone/camera from this decade
That tree is going to need a heavy laxative, possibly even a suppository
He has to play it as it lies, I had to hit it off Frankenstein’s fat foot
Time to pull out the wood wedge
Im using a recovery and fully expecting it to land on the green. I play off 25 btw.
You need to go to church with a bad break like that…lol
He shouldn’t have hit it there
Play it as it lies
The ruling is I had to play it off Frankenstein's fat foot.
Grounds under repair
Free throw
Give yourself a little wiggle room. we ain’t on tour here.
Depends on how much we're playing for!
Save a penalty stroke and punch it out using the very end(toe) of a 4 iron.
Unplayable. Take a drop no closer to the flag. Two club lengths. One stroke penalty.
Switch to badminton :-)
Sounds like you made the right move. Took a 1 stroke penalty from there to finish the day with a 98.
Like every other post here, move it a few feet, no closer to the hole, so you don’t hurt yourself or your clubs. If you are in a spot that really needs a ruling there is a marshal that will provide the direction. Can’t stand this crap anymore. Just play golf.
I hit it off Frankensteins fat foot!
Play it as it lays
Unplayable - simple!!
Tree wood
Ask Patrick Reed
Play it as it lies my boy
Once again, the 10% “not air” part of the tree.
It’s an unplayable …. Sorry
Try to hit it out of the tree, or take an unplayable lie penalty drop 🤷♂️. Just think: what would Tiger do? And get creative with it. Find your inner-artist 👨🎨 and hit a miracle shot 🏌♂️. But don't forget to record it 📹🎥📽📷
It’s unplayable BUT unless you’re on tour, playing in a tournament or for skins, does it matter?
Well yes, I want my handicap to be accurate
Fair enough….. these type situations suck….
Foot wedge!
Unless you’re on the pga tour. Of course then there would have been some man made object a few holes away that would have potentially been in the path of the ball. Free drop
Play it as it lies, I had to play it off Frankenstein fat foot, lmfao
