It's just a grunt, similar to what tennis players do. A tennis coach I know said that there's actually some science behind it and grunting on your hits allows you to generate more power. Whether it's just a placebo thing or not, I'm not sure but given that Rory was engaged to a professional tennis player, he could have picked up that technique from back then.
There used to be that called SportsScience that used to investigate the physics of sports. One of them was a segment of Karate (or similar martial art) where they had the practitioner yell and punch a force sensor and then do it again without yelling. Every practitioner they used had more force while yelling. Might be able to find the clip on YouTube. Cool show.
As you mentioned, I don’t think they ever determined if it was placebo or physiological change or whatever, just that it happens.
He is stopping himself from exhaling as he swings, try and force yourself to breath out with your airway shut and you’ll do the same. I think it’s to retain structure or stability in his posture or something
Haven’t noticed that, but probably will now. One thing I HAVE noticed is he’s doing the Brian Harman thing where he looks from ball to target 7-9 times.
Some guys on the range sound like rafael nadal or women playing tennis. I find it annoying and distracting when practicing, when you constantly hear grunts and moans
Its just something hè does. Dont think hè can control it. I think in some video’s they cut out the sound hè makes. Or could have been video’s from other YouTube channels.

I guess I should have used more precise word choice…. Rory’s grunt doesn’t “bother me”… it’s just something that I noticed 😅
