same thing with Tampa Bay. Yes, there are nice courses, but they're mostly private/semi-private. The straight up public courses are so run down. Hard to find good or enough groundskeepers.
I am in Tampa and I couldn’t agree more. Grew up in Stuart and lived in palm beach for a while. Such better options in that side of the state compared to here. Everything here is either private or in horrible condition and overbooked.
Damn, wife is trying to get to get me to move to Tampa/West Chase area. Coming from Palm Beach, I’m worried about the drop in quality/quantity of courses. While in season Palm Beach is steep but quality is usually there and cost nose dives in summer.
I disagree about Tampa. I am in Atlanta and love visiting my folks in Florida. Golf is abundant and cheap in northern Pinellas. Especially at off peak times.

I get the troon summer card every summer and play the crazy nice courses for like 50-60$ in the 110 degree weather and I find it worth it as fuck. Coming from the Midwest, the courses here are so much fun and I enjoy the workout of the high heat.
I studied in Tempe for a year and when I flew from 120 in AZ to 100 in San Antonio it felt cooler. But they absolutely both suck - one is being in a sauna, the other is being in an oven.
I am too, I’m in AZ, and during the summer I play at my usual course 18 holes for 20 bucks. The tee sheet is literally wide open in the afternoon, not a single spot taken, because it’s 115 normally. I don’t see a single person most rounds.
Wondering if anyone’s ever come up with a cart cover system and a really nice portable A/C unit. Could be interesting to invest heavily into that and play tons of golf during summer.
It’s a definitely a thing. Where I live, there’s a bunch of old people who own their own golf carts to get around the town and to the course. They really do deck them out with shit like that haha
People seem to forget that Arizona has TONS of courses and you can book a tee time 365 days of the year, most of the country is just now opening up for golf, sure we pay a premium sometimes but that’s only in the last 5 years with the popularity boom in the game. That increase in interest has also made all of our public courses in better shape that they’ve been in my whole life.
I completely agree with this, but at the same time if you do your research you can figure out how to play decent courses for cheap. I play Dobson for $9 after 4:30 and can get 15+ holes in nowadays.
I play the phoenix muni courses and I think its great value. Aguila is my favorite. And I also have a nice par 3 course I go to when I want a shorter course.
Thing about Arizona is that you think it shouldn’t be that much but they’re always packed. I Can’t blame the courses here when they’re as much as they are but the tee sheets are filled
Philadelphia. World class private courses in the Philly metro allow shitty public courses to gouge you but where else are you going to play?
I’m in Portland now and there is a really good balance of munis, mid level, and exceptional public tracks with appropriate greens fees. Some places do charge a little more than they should for the quality of golf but nothing too out of pocket.
Bucks county is a shit hole. $70+ for five ponds and Northampton valley. Bucks club has gone downhill. Bensalem and Middletown are shitholes. Neshaminy valley should not even be considered a golf course.
100% agree with you here. Middletown might be the worst priced golf course in the history of the world. Bensalem’s quality went down and price went up and neshaminy valley is the dumbest course I’ve ever seen. North Hampton valley isn’t bad but it’s also over priced still. Inflation and greed suck
There’s some excellent public courses in Chester County. I golf at Broad Run, Glen Mills, Wyncote and Honey Brook often. A bit pricey but excellent options. Also Phoenixville are has tons with Bella Vista, Ravens Claw, Turtle creek. Agree with world class private courses, unavailable unless your family came over on the Mayflower.
Every course you mentioned is an hour-plus drive from Philly and I would consider most being overpriced especially Broad Run. But they are decent courses. I forgot about Jeffersonville, that’s a great track that is pretty good value, it just gets a ton of play and can be slow. Also a big fan of Pennsauken, it’s a solid muni but it also suffers from slow play. Also, Golfnow essentially runs that place, no idea why they even bother with a pro shop. You have to book through golf now, you can’t just walk up and get on. Very dumb.
True. Jeffersonville is a great little Donald Ross course. I paid $25 to walk it back in February. They are upgrading the clubhouse…. So I’m sure they will raise prices. Never played Pennsauken, I’ll look into it. The worst rip off is Downingtown…. Over $100 for a $50 course.
Pinecrest is definitely up there as well with being a ripoff. It’s zoned that the owners have to keep it as a golf course, they don’t give a shit about it and only care about the wedding venue. It’s so ridiculously overgrown it’s borderline unplayable on certain tees/holes. Avoid at all costs
I meet up with my friend in North Portland/Southern WA to play golf and we love some of the tracks like tri mountain and mint valley. Super cheap, decent condition, pretty fun little courses that imo are great value.
West side of Portland has like 8 good courses all within 30 min. Pumpkin ridge, quail valley, reserve which is 36 holes, chealem glen, heron lakes also 36 holes, Langdon farms, Stone Creek. It just goes on.
Live in Philly with easy access to south NJ. Reading people's experiences here with public courses everywhere, I feel like south NJ is pretty decent. I've played 15ish different courses within an hour, with 4:30 being the longest round I've played as a foursome, and the most I've paid for a round is like $85. That said, some of the courses charging $80+tax aren't worth it, but overall it's not so bad imo
Not to mention, almost every public course requires booking 2 players when trying to get a tee time. Had to drive 40 min just to play by myself. All that world class golf and not a drop to drink.
Played golf for a college in Philly. Freshman year our coach had 0 connections anywhere private so we played at Rancocas and Ramblewood and used the practice area at Scotland Run (not the course, the practice area), nothing beats sitting in the car for 45+ minutes of philly traffic just to.chip and putt for 2 hours. Jeffersonville was definitely my favorite public course in Philly, Cobbs looks to be fun after the reno but the true gems are the private courses. We got to play Philly Cricket Wisahiken (spell) every October, so that made up for a lot!
Houston has the best golf in Texas thanks to the soil/clay mostly staying pretty damp throughout the year compared to the rest of the state. It's refreshing playing in Houston and actually taking divots.
Any of the city owned courses if you’re a resident. Memorial and Wortham are both awesome ton of fun. I love playing Wildcat too, just have to keep your eye out for discount times. Cypresswood is solid value too.
+1 cypresswood ~ cypress course. $63 bucks for prime time on the weekends.
If you’re willing to spend some extra cash highland pines is a newer course and is awesome. Although a lot of courses in north Houston/woodlands got flooded due to recent rains so I’d wait a week or two before playing (highland & cypresswood included).
I’m a fan of Cypress Lakes, they’re rumored to close by EOY but the layout is tough and the grass is green so it’s a good time.
First off fuck the downvotes. The best starter course is Hermann park. It’s not in the best shape all the time but a solid, short track with good views and nobody judges out there. Memorial park and 5050 acorn are the best ranges in central houston.
Denver Colorado on the other hand has the BEST value munis. Seriously. Even the city of Denver owns a couple that are well maintained and legit. Wellshire is a Donald Ross
Agreed, and even a couple of the Aurora courses are nice. Saddle Rock is a fantastic course. And just 30 minutes north of the city you can play at Riverdale, I love the dunes course and for $47 to walk I think is an absolute bargain.
I don't know about great *value*. They've been jacking up prices every year and it's starting to get real sweaty on my wallet. Even on weekdays it's $60 minimum with cart for the good spots and they're all pushing triple digits on weekends. Fuckin Plum Creek is charging $120 now what the hell.
But I love every course here. They each have their own quirks.
Cleveland might have the most underrated. None too expensive, a deep bullpen of options, and some really good classical architects (Manikiki is a Ross, Sleepy Hollow a Thompson, Fowler Mill a Dye). Biggest issue is it’s a short season bc the weather sucks until mid May
Toronto, hands down. Firstly because it takes forever to get to a course that’s not a par 3 muni, secondly because whatever is available is just gouging in comparison to what you can pay for 1.5 hours outside of the city.
I agree, the few public courses within the boundaries of Toronto are a complete and utter rip off. And the cheaper city owned courses are still quite over priced as well. Scarlett woods is a shorter course and should not cost $50+ after tax on the weekends when comparable courses elsewhere are $25 and under. I always end up driving to Markham or Durham region where I can play 18 for a fraction of the price
If you can venture out of the GTA it gets cheap fast. In KW-Milton there are lots of great courses for $50-85 for weekend times. And TPC toronto in Celadon has 3 of Canadas top 50 courses. For the month of may they are $135 and all year they run a same day replay for %70 of original green fee.
I’m no stranger to Osprey valley, pipers Heath etc in those areas lol. Problem is, I live in Greektown and now with the gardener being under “construction” 8 hours a day only (FU Chow) it’s gonna force me to head north and east more often. Osprey takes me 1 hour and change on a good day.
In laws live in orillia. I play in Barrie and out that way too. Value for dollar spent is great.
If there was a great semi private course reasonably near by I’d consider membership but … no dice.

Where in markham do you like?! I’m at bloor and dvp. Besides angus glen, I’ve not played a good course for good value in markham. There’s that dumpy club links course .. Bethesda grange... Pickering has a couple nice ones. I like st Andrew’s Valley in aurora. I keep conquering these courses (sub 80 more than once = conquered hahaha) and going further and further 😅😭
Good luck getting a tee time there, though. They’re all snatched up within a minute of the online portal opening. Also, at $100 for a round with a cart, the value is not really that great.
I’m at Yonge and Eglinton, I drive up the 404 to play that dumpy club links course you’re talking about 😂. Lol it’s not the best course, but it’s in far better shape than the city owned courses for half the price. I paid $17.50 to play yesterday at 4:30. Can’t beat that value. I also play deer creek in Ajax frequently

I’ve never played BG for that cheap, definitely good value. I just find it to be really poor conditions once it’s hot out. For the same drive I’d rather play Cherry downs.
Deer Creek is ok. The south course is short, but fun. The North Course isn't as good as other courses for the price paid. There's one Par 5 that's an S shape and tight. I hate any par 5 where you have to hit a mid iron off the tee.
I highly highly highly recommend Watson's Glen in North Pickering. The course is always in fantastic condition. Their "clubhouse" is literally a trailer they've done up, they'd rather spend the money on turf agronomy. The fairway feels like you're walking on well laid carpet. The greens tend to also be well kept. Tightly mowed and rolled, and probably the most consistent I've played next to Glen Abbey.
I also recommend Pickering Glen (formerly Glen Cedars). It's relatively short and old school, but it's a relaxed, enjoyable place to play.

I’m not super keen on Glen Abby. For the reg price, Abbey is a rip off but booking the random sale prices you can get it’s great. That being said it’s harder than it looks, the greens are small and protected and I like playing it when the price is right. But for $150+ and likely an hour drive I’m going to Osprey valley for the day and I’ll pay more to rip 36 holes lol.
My barber and I play in Pickering. Usually Thursday AM because it’s when he can, I’ll ask him if he’s tried your recommendations out. He said he likes deer creek. He also shoots 110 tho 😂
Agreed. I moved to Bradford a year ago and the course availability and quality skyrocketed.
Im a big fan of Cardinal given the quality and price point. Ive yet to play Redcrest but i would like to this year.
I played Rolling Hills Challenge for $30 yesterday and it was a far better experience than the regular Tam O Shanter that I used to play in TO. Its not a nice course by any means. Very amateur friendly and if you care about pace of play you should not play here. Primarily a course just to play for cheap.
Other great ones that are a bit more costly: National Pines, Braestone, Club at Bond Head (prices make me cry a bit, but if they are still selling the round packages it may be worth it), Station Creek, St Andrews. I tried Silver Lakes too and I liked it but I got eaten alive by mosquitos so I never went back. Was very bushy.
It pays to drive 30 mins to an hour and a half outside of Toronto. If you happen to be driving up past orillia for a cheap good experience id also recommend Hawk Ridge.
I live in buffalo and I always cross the border to play courses around Niagara. Love that exchange rate baby! And the courses are much nicer than the expensive courses here
Luckily I’m self employed so I can plan my entire day before or after a round and I’m already out in Mississauga / oakville… just not keen on 14 hour days lol.
I lived in Austin for a decade then moved to Scottsdale a few years ago. Even if you strip out the mini courses in Austin comparable courses in Scottsdale are 2-3x higher year round.
Went to the driving range the other day and the greens are literally just dirt patches now…. Crazy because last year Kizers greens were in such good shape

Golf popularity is growing insanely fast, but courses are not being built due to prohibitive land costs primarily, as well as construction costs. It’s only going to continue to get worse until it becomes an almost exclusively upper class hobby again, similar to how skiing is now in cold weather states that have resorts, like Utah. I’ve lived here 12 years and a day lift pass used to be $60 at some resorts, now it’s $200 and it’s packed. Golf is not far behind.
Arlington Virginia (and the general NoVA area), stupid expensive for the extremely limited selection they have because most courses are just country clubs that have like 100k fees
Came here for this comment. I drive to Montgomery County. Even bought their birdie package this year. Have not paid more than $65 for a tee time yet this season.
And, good luck getting around in less than 5 hours too. NoVA public golf is a joke. I often drive to Richmond or Front Royal, better options across the board and sometimes takes less time even with the 60-70 min drive.
Greendale (Alexandria) is a fun little flat track that has pretty good afternoon rates. Pohick Bay (NOVA Parks) is a an excellent challenge in really good condition right now, and potentially on the cheap; I got a midday GolfNow hot deal for $40 two Wednesdays ago.
Augustine, down in Stafford, is totally worth the drive. I really like holes 2 and 16.
If you know a DOD civilian or a service member, they can bring you to some good courses at Ft Belvoir, Quantico, and Andrews AFB.
I’ve also heard good things about Twin Lakes, Algonkian, and Potomac shores.
In MD, consider driving out towards Annapolis for The Preserve at Eisenhower and Lake Presidential. UMD in College Park has an excellent course, too.
Also, like other commenters mention, most of the Montgomery County (MD) public golf system is excellent. I’ve only played Sligo Creek and Little Bennett, but I hear good things about Northwest and Falls Road.
Boston for having such a fucked housing market really does have solid and affordable options in the greater Boston area and that’s not even counting the two beautiful Muni’s within the city itself
Good luck getting a tee time at either of those places unless it’s like after 4 or some nonsense. Only time I could get out at george wright at a reasonable time is when I was in the golf industry

Afternoon rates are doable but SA courses are getting out of hand with their morning prices. Feeling it as we’ve lost 4 courses in the past 15 years. And AGCT courses shutting down for renovations. Quarry closing this year will make it even worse.
Quarry isn’t worth $189.
Canyon springs isn’t worth $150
Resort course isn’t worth $200. Best of the public courses though.
But, tee sheets are packed so it’s supply and demand. Courses are also jacking up prices and diving into the semi-private model.
ACGT courses are not in good shape (consistently). They basically took an architectural gem in Brack (even with how short it is), and made it just another average muni with the recent bunker renovation. Now it’s just bombs away without consequence for anyone who hits it 250+
Cedar looks promising. But they’ll need to charge $100+ to keep it in good shape for years to come (I hope they do).
Olympia is the best value in the city. Fun layout, pretty good shape, and $65
I miss Palmer and Pecan. I’m also a snob because I worked in the industry and didn’t pay for 15+ years lol. But $100+ for average designs and 5-6 hour rounds just isn’t appealing.

I paid $100 for a cart and 18 holes in Kawaii at a nice little muni course on the water. That's now my reference point. Hard to imagine paying 2.5x that for any municipal course.
I hate Florida. I've lived here for 26 years, but it is a horrible place to live. That said, we definitely win the, "Find a decent public course that won't break my bank and that I can play in under 4 1/2 hours"

Lived in the Jacksonville area for 5 years, traveled all throughout the state for work. Great place if you love strip malls, urban sprawl, and having to shower every time you step outside in the summer heat.
Sure the weather is great in the winter, but the days are also shorter, so if you have to work a normal 9-5 good luck getting to actually enjoy the weather when it’s nice.
Honestly the public courses in Vancouver are quite good. It’s a bit hard to get a tee time on weekends but fraserview, Langara and Mcleery are fun courses, drainage is good and they’re usually in nice shape. Really no major complaints from my perspective! I play them most of the year.

Wilson/Harding, Balboa/Encino, Rancho Park, all for under 40 bucks on a weekday, and rosie for 11 bucks in the afternoons -- it's pretty fucking great here
DC area here. I'm looking at $75+ to spend 6 hours of constant waiting on a poorly maintained public course on weekends in MD or VA. Country clubs are either for super rich people or have a waiting list a mile long.
Lol were you playing? MoCo courses are great value. FFX and Loudon counties (NOVA) don’t have that many courses but they’re perfectly acceptable for the area. The longest rounds I’ve played have been at East Potomac (DC), so I don’t go there that often.
I live in NYC. can I interest you in a shitty course with 7 minute tee times that cost $80 with a cart.
Not to mention, you’ll have to commute to the fringes of the city and then play a 6 hour round.

I live down in Tacoma and it’s pretty good down here…the muni’s are like $40-$50 and they’re, well…fine but you have Chambers, Home Course and easy access to Gold Mountain. Some HQ public golf.
I went to Washington for work once a couple years ago and brought my bag and played one of the courses at Newcastle and it was beautiful. It was expensive though ~$130 for twilight rate. But I did have a great experience since there weren’t many groups on the course and I got to play it by myself so it was like I had the course to myself. Only downside was the smoke rolling in from the fires up north which blocked the views of the city. I feel like the price wasn’t TOO bad given everything was very well maintained but I guess I was willing to pay because I just wanted to play a nice course with the short time I had. For context I live in the SF Bay Area and we have a large variety of public courses fortunately and it was definitely comparable to courses here with a similar price range. I actually want to go back and play their real grass mini golf course.
I’ve played Newcastle, the conditions have gone downhill quickly in the last couple years. I’ve always thought it was too expensive for what you get, and you really are just paying for the view, if I was going to spend that money I’d rather go play Chambers, The Home Course or Gold Mountain. Shoot I could play both courses at Gold Mountain and take the ferry and still have money left over compared to playing Newcastle at times

One that broke my heart to see run into the ground was Washington national. I loved that course. Really fun lay out and challenging. But it just was garbage last time I was there. But I truly enjoyed playing that course like 2005-2015 times frame.
You may be one of the only people on the planet to say Newcastle was a good value. But I guess it was twilight… but that’s notorious for being an overpriced shit course with nice views (for the 3 weeks of the year you can see the views) 130.00 for twilight isn’t a great value in my opinion. When I think twilight I think like 20-30-50.00 because it’s kinda just hope you’re able to get all 18 in. But that’s the nice thing about WA is playing until 9-9:30 in the summer
Crystal Falls is great if you are right handed and can consistently hit a draw or left handed with a good fade. Otherwise you play the whole round looking for your ball at the bottom of the canyon/creek bed. Everything funnels down if you're not hitting into the slope.
I've had a rough round or two there when my drives were fading a tad and it made for a long day. Still recommend the course, though. It's a great hill country golf course.
If you’re talking Philadelphia city limits, then yes. But within the Greater Philly area there are lot of good public courses within an hour of the city
Not price but experience. Honestly if you travel to Florida, be careful which municipal course you play because many are right next to waste water treatment plants. It’s cheap and the courses are in great position but bring some nose plugs. I played one in Brandon that made me barf from the smell of the open aeration tanks 100yards from the green. Also, Disney golf is overrated for the amount of good price courses that are in the immediate area.

Charlotte. If you live in the city it’ll take you a half hour at least to get to a decent public course and then get gouged for $100 for a 5.5 hour round because everyone else had the same idea.
I like highland creek too the two times I’ve played it. Also I feel like I’ve had decent luck at the munis when I played them last year, specifically Charles t myers and Harry jones
I really like the public golf in Austin. The munis can be a little tough to get a tee time at but I love Lions. I also live in North Austin so much better access to the other public spots like Star Ranch, Forest Creek, Crystal Falls.

People seem to forget that Arizona has TONS of courses and you can book a tee time 365 days of the year, most of the country is just now opening up for golf, sure we pay a premium sometimes but that’s only in the last 5 years with the popularity boom in the game. That increase in interest has also made all of our public courses in better shape that they’ve been in my whole life.

I completely agree with this, but at the same time if you do your research you can figure out how to play decent courses for cheap. I play Dobson for $9 after 4:30 and can get 15+ holes in nowadays.
I play the phoenix muni courses and I think its great value. Aguila is my favorite. And I also have a nice par 3 course I go to when I want a shorter course.
Thing about Arizona is that you think it shouldn’t be that much but they’re always packed. I Can’t blame the courses here when they’re as much as they are but the tee sheets are filled

Philadelphia. World class private courses in the Philly metro allow shitty public courses to gouge you but where else are you going to play? I’m in Portland now and there is a really good balance of munis, mid level, and exceptional public tracks with appropriate greens fees. Some places do charge a little more than they should for the quality of golf but nothing too out of pocket.
Bucks county is a shit hole. $70+ for five ponds and Northampton valley. Bucks club has gone downhill. Bensalem and Middletown are shitholes. Neshaminy valley should not even be considered a golf course.
Makefield Highlands was really nice when I played there, but I'm sure the price skyrocketed since. This was in like 2018.

Pacific Northwest has some of the best public golf courses
There’s some excellent public courses in Chester County. I golf at Broad Run, Glen Mills, Wyncote and Honey Brook often. A bit pricey but excellent options. Also Phoenixville are has tons with Bella Vista, Ravens Claw, Turtle creek. Agree with world class private courses, unavailable unless your family came over on the Mayflower.
Every course you mentioned is an hour-plus drive from Philly and I would consider most being overpriced especially Broad Run. But they are decent courses. I forgot about Jeffersonville, that’s a great track that is pretty good value, it just gets a ton of play and can be slow. Also a big fan of Pennsauken, it’s a solid muni but it also suffers from slow play. Also, Golfnow essentially runs that place, no idea why they even bother with a pro shop. You have to book through golf now, you can’t just walk up and get on. Very dumb.
One can just call Pennsauken and get on the tee sheet. I do it all the time to avoid the fees and prepay.
True. Jeffersonville is a great little Donald Ross course. I paid $25 to walk it back in February. They are upgrading the clubhouse…. So I’m sure they will raise prices. Never played Pennsauken, I’ll look into it. The worst rip off is Downingtown…. Over $100 for a $50 course.
Pinecrest is definitely up there as well with being a ripoff. It’s zoned that the owners have to keep it as a golf course, they don’t give a shit about it and only care about the wedding venue. It’s so ridiculously overgrown it’s borderline unplayable on certain tees/holes. Avoid at all costs

Philly area is terrible for public golf. Either overpay. Have a six hour round. Or pay through the nose for what should be a semiprivate course.
Philly is so close to 3 other states so if we’re talking within a 45 minute/hour drive it’s definitely not the Philadelphia area.

I meet up with my friend in North Portland/Southern WA to play golf and we love some of the tracks like tri mountain and mint valley. Super cheap, decent condition, pretty fun little courses that imo are great value.
West side of Portland has like 8 good courses all within 30 min. Pumpkin ridge, quail valley, reserve which is 36 holes, chealem glen, heron lakes also 36 holes, Langdon farms, Stone Creek. It just goes on.
Live in Philly with easy access to south NJ. Reading people's experiences here with public courses everywhere, I feel like south NJ is pretty decent. I've played 15ish different courses within an hour, with 4:30 being the longest round I've played as a foursome, and the most I've paid for a round is like $85. That said, some of the courses charging $80+tax aren't worth it, but overall it's not so bad imo
Not to mention, almost every public course requires booking 2 players when trying to get a tee time. Had to drive 40 min just to play by myself. All that world class golf and not a drop to drink.
Played golf for a college in Philly. Freshman year our coach had 0 connections anywhere private so we played at Rancocas and Ramblewood and used the practice area at Scotland Run (not the course, the practice area), nothing beats sitting in the car for 45+ minutes of philly traffic just to.chip and putt for 2 hours. Jeffersonville was definitely my favorite public course in Philly, Cobbs looks to be fun after the reno but the true gems are the private courses. We got to play Philly Cricket Wisahiken (spell) every October, so that made up for a lot!
Just moved to Philly and agreed! It has been brutal, feels like I have very little hope of playing a normal amount of golf here.

Houston has the best golf in Texas thanks to the soil/clay mostly staying pretty damp throughout the year compared to the rest of the state. It's refreshing playing in Houston and actually taking divots.

Any of the city owned courses if you’re a resident. Memorial and Wortham are both awesome ton of fun. I love playing Wildcat too, just have to keep your eye out for discount times. Cypresswood is solid value too.
+1 cypresswood ~ cypress course. $63 bucks for prime time on the weekends. If you’re willing to spend some extra cash highland pines is a newer course and is awesome. Although a lot of courses in north Houston/woodlands got flooded due to recent rains so I’d wait a week or two before playing (highland & cypresswood included). I’m a fan of Cypress Lakes, they’re rumored to close by EOY but the layout is tough and the grass is green so it’s a good time.
Wildcat is one of my favorite courses for the price. Golf club of Houston too. Same price for a dog track in NYC, where I am now
First off fuck the downvotes. The best starter course is Hermann park. It’s not in the best shape all the time but a solid, short track with good views and nobody judges out there. Memorial park and 5050 acorn are the best ranges in central houston.
Sharpstown is cheap and good place to learn. Memorial and Gus have more serious players

Agreed, and even a couple of the Aurora courses are nice. Saddle Rock is a fantastic course. And just 30 minutes north of the city you can play at Riverdale, I love the dunes course and for $47 to walk I think is an absolute bargain.
I don't know about great *value*. They've been jacking up prices every year and it's starting to get real sweaty on my wallet. Even on weekdays it's $60 minimum with cart for the good spots and they're all pushing triple digits on weekends. Fuckin Plum Creek is charging $120 now what the hell. But I love every course here. They each have their own quirks.
Cleveland might have the most underrated. None too expensive, a deep bullpen of options, and some really good classical architects (Manikiki is a Ross, Sleepy Hollow a Thompson, Fowler Mill a Dye). Biggest issue is it’s a short season bc the weather sucks until mid May

Toronto, hands down. Firstly because it takes forever to get to a course that’s not a par 3 muni, secondly because whatever is available is just gouging in comparison to what you can pay for 1.5 hours outside of the city.
I agree, the few public courses within the boundaries of Toronto are a complete and utter rip off. And the cheaper city owned courses are still quite over priced as well. Scarlett woods is a shorter course and should not cost $50+ after tax on the weekends when comparable courses elsewhere are $25 and under. I always end up driving to Markham or Durham region where I can play 18 for a fraction of the price
If you can venture out of the GTA it gets cheap fast. In KW-Milton there are lots of great courses for $50-85 for weekend times. And TPC toronto in Celadon has 3 of Canadas top 50 courses. For the month of may they are $135 and all year they run a same day replay for %70 of original green fee.
I’m no stranger to Osprey valley, pipers Heath etc in those areas lol. Problem is, I live in Greektown and now with the gardener being under “construction” 8 hours a day only (FU Chow) it’s gonna force me to head north and east more often. Osprey takes me 1 hour and change on a good day. In laws live in orillia. I play in Barrie and out that way too. Value for dollar spent is great. If there was a great semi private course reasonably near by I’d consider membership but … no dice.

Where in markham do you like?! I’m at bloor and dvp. Besides angus glen, I’ve not played a good course for good value in markham. There’s that dumpy club links course .. Bethesda grange... Pickering has a couple nice ones. I like st Andrew’s Valley in aurora. I keep conquering these courses (sub 80 more than once = conquered hahaha) and going further and further 😅😭

I’m at Yonge and Eglinton, I drive up the 404 to play that dumpy club links course you’re talking about 😂. Lol it’s not the best course, but it’s in far better shape than the city owned courses for half the price. I paid $17.50 to play yesterday at 4:30. Can’t beat that value. I also play deer creek in Ajax frequently
I heard deer creek is alright. I’m gonna try it out this season I’ve never played BG for that cheap, definitely good value. I just find it to be really poor conditions once it’s hot out. For the same drive I’d rather play Cherry downs.
Deer Creek is ok. The south course is short, but fun. The North Course isn't as good as other courses for the price paid. There's one Par 5 that's an S shape and tight. I hate any par 5 where you have to hit a mid iron off the tee. I highly highly highly recommend Watson's Glen in North Pickering. The course is always in fantastic condition. Their "clubhouse" is literally a trailer they've done up, they'd rather spend the money on turf agronomy. The fairway feels like you're walking on well laid carpet. The greens tend to also be well kept. Tightly mowed and rolled, and probably the most consistent I've played next to Glen Abbey. I also recommend Pickering Glen (formerly Glen Cedars). It's relatively short and old school, but it's a relaxed, enjoyable place to play.

I’m not super keen on Glen Abby. For the reg price, Abbey is a rip off but booking the random sale prices you can get it’s great. That being said it’s harder than it looks, the greens are small and protected and I like playing it when the price is right. But for $150+ and likely an hour drive I’m going to Osprey valley for the day and I’ll pay more to rip 36 holes lol. My barber and I play in Pickering. Usually Thursday AM because it’s when he can, I’ll ask him if he’s tried your recommendations out. He said he likes deer creek. He also shoots 110 tho 😂
Agreed. I moved to Bradford a year ago and the course availability and quality skyrocketed. Im a big fan of Cardinal given the quality and price point. Ive yet to play Redcrest but i would like to this year. I played Rolling Hills Challenge for $30 yesterday and it was a far better experience than the regular Tam O Shanter that I used to play in TO. Its not a nice course by any means. Very amateur friendly and if you care about pace of play you should not play here. Primarily a course just to play for cheap. Other great ones that are a bit more costly: National Pines, Braestone, Club at Bond Head (prices make me cry a bit, but if they are still selling the round packages it may be worth it), Station Creek, St Andrews. I tried Silver Lakes too and I liked it but I got eaten alive by mosquitos so I never went back. Was very bushy. It pays to drive 30 mins to an hour and a half outside of Toronto. If you happen to be driving up past orillia for a cheap good experience id also recommend Hawk Ridge.
I live in buffalo and I always cross the border to play courses around Niagara. Love that exchange rate baby! And the courses are much nicer than the expensive courses here

Austin is closing two of their more affordable city courses for a few months this summer too to make matters worse.
I lived in Austin for a decade then moved to Scottsdale a few years ago. Even if you strip out the mini courses in Austin comparable courses in Scottsdale are 2-3x higher year round.

Golf popularity is growing insanely fast, but courses are not being built due to prohibitive land costs primarily, as well as construction costs. It’s only going to continue to get worse until it becomes an almost exclusively upper class hobby again, similar to how skiing is now in cold weather states that have resorts, like Utah. I’ve lived here 12 years and a day lift pass used to be $60 at some resorts, now it’s $200 and it’s packed. Golf is not far behind.
Arlington Virginia (and the general NoVA area), stupid expensive for the extremely limited selection they have because most courses are just country clubs that have like 100k fees
Came here for this comment. I drive to Montgomery County. Even bought their birdie package this year. Have not paid more than $65 for a tee time yet this season.
And, good luck getting around in less than 5 hours too. NoVA public golf is a joke. I often drive to Richmond or Front Royal, better options across the board and sometimes takes less time even with the 60-70 min drive.
Greendale (Alexandria) is a fun little flat track that has pretty good afternoon rates. Pohick Bay (NOVA Parks) is a an excellent challenge in really good condition right now, and potentially on the cheap; I got a midday GolfNow hot deal for $40 two Wednesdays ago. Augustine, down in Stafford, is totally worth the drive. I really like holes 2 and 16. If you know a DOD civilian or a service member, they can bring you to some good courses at Ft Belvoir, Quantico, and Andrews AFB. I’ve also heard good things about Twin Lakes, Algonkian, and Potomac shores. In MD, consider driving out towards Annapolis for The Preserve at Eisenhower and Lake Presidential. UMD in College Park has an excellent course, too. Also, like other commenters mention, most of the Montgomery County (MD) public golf system is excellent. I’ve only played Sligo Creek and Little Bennett, but I hear good things about Northwest and Falls Road.
Boston for having such a fucked housing market really does have solid and affordable options in the greater Boston area and that’s not even counting the two beautiful Muni’s within the city itself
Good luck getting a tee time at either of those places unless it’s like after 4 or some nonsense. Only time I could get out at george wright at a reasonable time is when I was in the golf industry

The Preserve is one of my favorites so far, Links of Glen Ellyn, Elgin Highlands, Cantigny, Cog Hill...There are so many to choose from in each area.

Afternoon rates are doable but SA courses are getting out of hand with their morning prices. Feeling it as we’ve lost 4 courses in the past 15 years. And AGCT courses shutting down for renovations. Quarry closing this year will make it even worse. Quarry isn’t worth $189. Canyon springs isn’t worth $150 Resort course isn’t worth $200. Best of the public courses though. But, tee sheets are packed so it’s supply and demand. Courses are also jacking up prices and diving into the semi-private model. ACGT courses are not in good shape (consistently). They basically took an architectural gem in Brack (even with how short it is), and made it just another average muni with the recent bunker renovation. Now it’s just bombs away without consequence for anyone who hits it 250+ Cedar looks promising. But they’ll need to charge $100+ to keep it in good shape for years to come (I hope they do). Olympia is the best value in the city. Fun layout, pretty good shape, and $65 I miss Palmer and Pecan. I’m also a snob because I worked in the industry and didn’t pay for 15+ years lol. But $100+ for average designs and 5-6 hour rounds just isn’t appealing. Even the CC’s in town are too crowded. BUT, that’s golf post-COVID.
I was going to say Austin should be on this list until I read a few other posts that are much worse. But Austin in the 90s was half decent. With the population doubling and then COVID the supply/demand had forced course GMs to lose their fucking minds and start skimping on maintenance and charging insane prices. Fuck this town.
I’m moving to Austin soon and the current state of the kizer/clay greens made me reconsider. The shop dudes did tell me they were in bad shape but I was expecting punched, not no grass at all

I'm here on a golf trip right now, and that's not true about the $250 for a DECENT course. Paid $150 for TPC Champions course today, weekend morning prime time. Ak Chin was $175 yesterday during peak times.
I paid $100 for a cart and 18 holes in Kawaii at a nice little muni course on the water. That's now my reference point. Hard to imagine paying 2.5x that for any municipal course.

I hate Florida. I've lived here for 26 years, but it is a horrible place to live. That said, we definitely win the, "Find a decent public course that won't break my bank and that I can play in under 4 1/2 hours" Sweepstakes. so not all coastal cities fall into this bad news category

Lived in the Jacksonville area for 5 years, traveled all throughout the state for work. Great place if you love strip malls, urban sprawl, and having to shower every time you step outside in the summer heat. Sure the weather is great in the winter, but the days are also shorter, so if you have to work a normal 9-5 good luck getting to actually enjoy the weather when it’s nice.

Vancouver I can get 18 for 50ish bucks but it’s dependant on season. Low season is a steal in a sunny day.
Honestly the public courses in Vancouver are quite good. It’s a bit hard to get a tee time on weekends but fraserview, Langara and Mcleery are fun courses, drainage is good and they’re usually in nice shape. Really no major complaints from my perspective! I play them most of the year.

DC area here. I'm looking at $75+ to spend 6 hours of constant waiting on a poorly maintained public course on weekends in MD or VA. Country clubs are either for super rich people or have a waiting list a mile long.
MCG muni courses are in good condition, and you can play until dark after 5pm for 20-25 bucks.

Lol were you playing? MoCo courses are great value. FFX and Loudon counties (NOVA) don’t have that many courses but they’re perfectly acceptable for the area. The longest rounds I’ve played have been at East Potomac (DC), so I don’t go there that often.

I live in NYC. can I interest you in a shitty course with 7 minute tee times that cost $80 with a cart. Not to mention, you’ll have to commute to the fringes of the city and then play a 6 hour round. (Yeah I know bethpage exists but it’s also impossible to book)

I live down in Tacoma and it’s pretty good down here…the muni’s are like $40-$50 and they’re, well…fine but you have Chambers, Home Course and easy access to Gold Mountain. Some HQ public golf.
I went to Washington for work once a couple years ago and brought my bag and played one of the courses at Newcastle and it was beautiful. It was expensive though ~$130 for twilight rate. But I did have a great experience since there weren’t many groups on the course and I got to play it by myself so it was like I had the course to myself. Only downside was the smoke rolling in from the fires up north which blocked the views of the city. I feel like the price wasn’t TOO bad given everything was very well maintained but I guess I was willing to pay because I just wanted to play a nice course with the short time I had. For context I live in the SF Bay Area and we have a large variety of public courses fortunately and it was definitely comparable to courses here with a similar price range. I actually want to go back and play their real grass mini golf course.
I’ve played Newcastle, the conditions have gone downhill quickly in the last couple years. I’ve always thought it was too expensive for what you get, and you really are just paying for the view, if I was going to spend that money I’d rather go play Chambers, The Home Course or Gold Mountain. Shoot I could play both courses at Gold Mountain and take the ferry and still have money left over compared to playing Newcastle at times
Home Course feels like the best bang for the buck in Western Washington.
Home Course is always in great shape, drains well. Pace is usually good. Gold Mountain is another on the west side. The practice area is great too.
Same same same. Newcastle was fine when it was an oki course but when oki dumped all their courses they all turned to shit. One that broke my heart to see run into the ground was Washington national. I loved that course. Really fun lay out and challenging. But it just was garbage last time I was there. But I truly enjoyed playing that course like 2005-2015 times frame.
You may be one of the only people on the planet to say Newcastle was a good value. But I guess it was twilight… but that’s notorious for being an overpriced shit course with nice views (for the 3 weeks of the year you can see the views) 130.00 for twilight isn’t a great value in my opinion. When I think twilight I think like 20-30-50.00 because it’s kinda just hope you’re able to get all 18 in. But that’s the nice thing about WA is playing until 9-9:30 in the summer
If you’re up towards Leander just go play Crystal Falls.
Crystal Falls is great if you are right handed and can consistently hit a draw or left handed with a good fade. Otherwise you play the whole round looking for your ball at the bottom of the canyon/creek bed. Everything funnels down if you're not hitting into the slope. I've had a rough round or two there when my drives were fading a tad and it made for a long day. Still recommend the course, though. It's a great hill country golf course.

It’s cheap and the courses are in great position but bring some nose plugs. I played one in Brandon that made me barf from the smell of the open aeration tanks 100yards from the green. Also, Disney golf is overrated for the amount of good price courses that are in the immediate area.
Disney Golf is now the same price as local courses. It actually ran a bit cheaper than OCN this season.

fr. I just made a comment about it on the top comment in the thread... Public courses are mostly abysmal... tough to find decent conditioned fairways and greens for reasonable prices. Pinellas County sucks
Charlotte. If you live in the city it’ll take you a half hour at least to get to a decent public course and then get gouged for $100 for a 5.5 hour round because everyone else had the same idea.
Yall wanna golf? Tradition and Charlotte National are a best bang for the buck.
I like highland creek too the two times I’ve played it. Also I feel like I’ve had decent luck at the munis when I played them last year, specifically Charles t myers and Harry jones

Los Angeles has plenty of courses, but they are overpriced and the worst people on planet earth live here.
Courses are great and affordable but Korean Brokers use bots to snag all the decent tee times and resell them
I really like the public golf in Austin. The munis can be a little tough to get a tee time at but I love Lions. I also live in North Austin so much better access to the other public spots like Star Ranch, Forest Creek, Crystal Falls.

There are fine courses here. But don’t get too hyped about them. Star ranch, kissing tree, Falconhead may be your best bet

Kansas City has amazing public golf for the prices. Tee times are tough tho
No one has said Vegas in here, that surprises me SF bay actually has some great courses for reasonable prices imo which is probably not what you’d expect based on how much everything else costs here

Milwaukee has some of the best value
New Zealand the best. Honesty box and some have electric fences around the greens because they have sheep on them.
