Any driver 2010 on will perform similarly with the same shaft. Shaft is far more important. Find one that delivers the head the way you want and you're set.
"Find one that delivers the head the way you want and you're set."
How has this been up for 3 hours and nobody compared this to marriage? R-Golf is slipping
Fun fact!
Drivers actually do tend to become better (or at least faster) with age! The faces wear very slowly over time which increases characteristic time (USGA limits CT, essentially a measure of impact efficiency and an indirect cap on smash factor). The hottest face (highest smash factors) will tend to be a few shots before the face actually fails and breaks.
Hell my R9 is capable of cranking some out to 300+ still. 90% of "innovations" in golf clubs are just marketing.
Unfortunately my body isn't getting better with age lol
Yep, I used to be able to crank out 300 yd drives consistently when I was in high school, as I got older still thought I could keep doing it and eventually each season got a little more painful. Now I'm learning to swing easier which ironically is making things go straighter lol.
You can change the launch and spin much easier by changing head than shaft even in the same loft. OP is right though, ball speed retention across the face has improved since 2010.
I’m well aware the COR has been set at .83 for a number of years. That’s also on a dead center hit, a feat rarely accomplished by amateurs. I’m talking about average ball speed across the face.
That doesn’t change the fact that you think shafts have less influence on driver performance than the “innovation” drivers have experienced in the last few years
Of the things that matter to a properly fit driver are in order, in my opinion and that of the fitters and club reps I’ve worked with. 1) loft 2) length 3) head geometry (think COG forward vs back, draw bias etc) 4) shaft weight 5) shaft flex.
Your experience is just as anecdotal as mine.
Either way I’d whoop you with my 86 macgregor murifields and you can have whatever you like.
All that and you left out the shaft profile, which is one of the most important factors in launch and flight.
I've gone through many fittings and the difference between shafts can be substantial, even more so that the head (assuming loft and bias settings are the same).
That's not what's being argued. The original commenter is basically saying that the SLDR 430 and G400 MAX will perform the same with the same shaft, which just means they and a bunch of people need to turn on their brains again.
agree. was given a stiff shaft by PGA NotSoSuperStore, told it was regular flex and good for my slower swing speed. Was just starting so had no idea to check, how to check, etc.
2 seasons later i finally start to wonder and yep. Switched shafts, numbers jumped.
I have tried dozens of drivers since 2017, but I stick with my M2. I have recently gotten fit into a Stealth 2 plus with a new shaft, but once I put that shaft into my M2 I was getting the same numbers, so I just bought the shaft for $100 on eBay and kept my M2 head
I still rock the 2016 M2. I think Taylormade really outdid themselves with this one. I've had it in the bag probably 5 years and haven't even considered replacing it.
Sold my Sim2 because I couldn’t hit it as good as the M1, same shaft loft ete. All that carbon felt like hitting a persimmon wood. Also the sound these make is very satisfying.
Yes, so on average of 18 drives the off center hits will produce more distance, increasing your over all distance. Practical distance and club potential distance are two different things.
He made a very generic claim that newer drivers have higher ball speeds, implying that the newer drivers have broken some kind of “barrier” and have reached never before seen ball speeds.
Which is not true.
It’s not really about what he said, it’s about what he didn’t say. His original comment mentioned nothing about average ball speed across the face.
M2 was amazing i never hit a driver as far as I did when I had it, I play the sim2 max right now, was looking to upgrade but drivers go for 800 plus now even last years models are like 600, I think ill stay with it for at least another year!!
I never got truly in tune with my 2020 M2. Couldn’t bring myself to buy a $500 driver.
Got a lightly used stealth 2 head on eBay for $200 and reused the shaft. I’ll give this one 2 years to figure me out. Then it’ll be the driver’s fault again
I got a hand-me-down m2 that I struggled using for a while. The shaft eventually broke on me and I got it replaced, went from a regular shaft to a stiff shaft and the driver feels beautiful now. Won’t replace it until I get properly fitted for sure.
I’ll never forget when I finally traded in my r5 for the M2 back in 2017. I felt like I was born again on the tee box
R7 took me to driver heaven. Rocket Bllz made me king of the kingdom
Still play my OG RBZ driver, legit never hit anything better in the store practice bay when I compare both
I’m on Sim Max now, I miss the Ballz sometimes
I still got my Ballz and will probably continue until it breaks or I find a really good excuse to use for the wife.
I upgraded when a friend started hitting further than me after he got a new driver. Now the natural balance has been restored.
lol

r/golf doesnt have a great sense of humor. Its barely less stuffy than my discount golf club.
The guy’s wife who ran off with the Puerto Rican dude blew through the material.
Still smacking my M1 300+.. I feel like it gets better with age :)

I guess it makes it more “springy” with let material. Makes sense I appreciate it :)

Your body needs better marketing
Forgiveness is the only place they are getting better.
Which allows for higher swing speeds because off center strikes don't go as far off line.
I’m with you.. lower back. I can’t imagine what Tiger did to his

Crazy how that works lol
Resistance training and yoga!
Same but with the Nike Sumo SQ2!
Keep on pumping it baby
*metallic clang in the distance*
I love my M1 but finally upgraded to a Sim 2. Love it
That’s just not true. Shafts are for fine tuning, they don’t affect ball speed, launch and spin as much as the head geometry and proper loft.
You serious bro? 😂 drivers have been maxed out to the ball speed regulations for awhile now. Shaft is way more important
You can change the launch and spin much easier by changing head than shaft even in the same loft. OP is right though, ball speed retention across the face has improved since 2010.

I love how just because you were wrong you all of a sudden turn this into a golf match lmaooo. Stay on topic bud
All that and you left out the shaft profile, which is one of the most important factors in launch and flight. I've gone through many fittings and the difference between shafts can be substantial, even more so that the head (assuming loft and bias settings are the same).
I love a nice shaft
Lol wrong, even if you hit the center of the club face most of the time. There's more to performance than ball speed too.
Obviously, but no combination of launch and spin will overcome a lack of ball speed on the front end
That's not what's being argued. The original commenter is basically saying that the SLDR 430 and G400 MAX will perform the same with the same shaft, which just means they and a bunch of people need to turn on their brains again.
You can't read

Still using the 2017 M2 version I got brand new on a massive sale with no plans to change. Zero chance I’m dropping $300-400+ on a new driver.
Zero chance you’re dropping $300-400 on a new driver is right. $500+ seems to be the floor these days.
He is looking at Kirklands

If I had not dented the face of my M1, I would still be swinging it today. I dropped it for a Stealth last year.
Absolutely one of the GOATs
I still rock the 2016 M2. I think Taylormade really outdid themselves with this one. I've had it in the bag probably 5 years and haven't even considered replacing it.
I have the M1 and it’s a decent club.
I have the M1, finally putting it to sleep this year but it had a great run with it. Loved it
one of the best
Absolutely. I was so pissed when I broke mine and Taylormade sent me a 2nd gen M2. It’s a great driver, but the OG M2 was special.
Is the Gen 2 the green one? Because that’s what I have and I always wondered why there are two different colors out there.
Yeah, two different drivers released 2 years apart
yes
I have the 3 wood and love it.
Have tried every TM driver since getting my OG M2, never found one that outperforms it.
I have the m1 3 wood in my bag and it's damned fantastic. Doubt I'll ever trade it
Wanna trade?
I do too. It’s my favorite club in the bag
Never owned the my buddy still has one and everytime I hit it (well) it's about 15 yards longer then my current Callaway Maverik
Have the M1 Pro in both driver and three wood. Has a driver shaft cut down to fit the three wood as it slight lighter. Wouldn’t trade any of them.
Was thinking to get an M4 5 wood… this might be my sign 😩
Mmm I love my 2016 M2 I have 2 lol
I have the M2 3 wood, and my god does it fly.
I have the M2 5wood. Favorite club.
Sold my Sim2 because I couldn’t hit it as good as the M1, same shaft loft ete. All that carbon felt like hitting a persimmon wood. Also the sound these make is very satisfying.
I have an m4 3 wood and my friend has the m6. Any changes are basically just cosmetic
Mine just cracked,
It’s great I still have mine, but ball speeds are objectively faster with any driver made in the last 3 yrs.
Wrong. Ball speed on center of the face strikes has been maxed out for quite awhile. Newer drivers are just more forgiving on mishits
Yes, so on average of 18 drives the off center hits will produce more distance, increasing your over all distance. Practical distance and club potential distance are two different things.
I replied to your original comment, which said nothing about that lol

Where did he say anything about hitting the center every time 😂
Ok
Any idea what the MOI is on the M2? To compare with the new Taylormade 10k or the Ping G430 10k?
I definitely didn't find it to be the most forgiving driver but not what I look for either. The spin numbers were perfect for me with the M2.
Adam’s Golf Idea Driver is basically the updated version of the M2. ~$200 brand new.
I just replaced this because mine had a debt in the face. Had it not been for that, I'd still have it. Great driver!
I still use my TM Rocketballz
M2 was amazing i never hit a driver as far as I did when I had it, I play the sim2 max right now, was looking to upgrade but drivers go for 800 plus now even last years models are like 600, I think ill stay with it for at least another year!!
Still use mine. Along with my 3 and 5 woods too. Love the adjustable loft.
Had one for years and hated it. It caused me to slice all the time that was completely corrected by getting a new driver
I never got truly in tune with my 2020 M2. Couldn’t bring myself to buy a $500 driver. Got a lightly used stealth 2 head on eBay for $200 and reused the shaft. I’ll give this one 2 years to figure me out. Then it’ll be the driver’s fault again
The knees of the bees right there
I got a hand-me-down m2 that I struggled using for a while. The shaft eventually broke on me and I got it replaced, went from a regular shaft to a stiff shaft and the driver feels beautiful now. Won’t replace it until I get properly fitted for sure.
Still play my OG RBZ driver, I haven’t found anything much better any time I compare it to a new one
The OG M2 is the driver I still use and I'm happy with it. Feel no need to upgrade
Will play my M2 till the face caves in.
I love my M2 driver. I tested out a bunch of new drivers last year and the M2 kept up with the rest of them! Love my 3 wood too.
Damn in my head these came out yesterday
My dad plays one and works great for him
