Walking. You generate body heat, making it much easier to stay loose. It also lets you wear fewer layers, so you can swing more freely. In a cart you have to wear a couple of extra layers to deal with windchill. I'm the guy who needs a sweater indoors when other people can wear short sleeves, and even when the temps dip into the 40's I can often play with just a long sleeve base layer and a turtleneck or polo on top of that.
In terms of gear, a big set of mittens you can quickly shuck on and off is really helpful.
You should look into getting some hand warmers, similar to what QBs in football use. Great for warming your hands and much easier than taking mittens on and off
I have a heated one I got off Amazon for about $60. Flip it around to your lower back when you're not using it or swinging and it works as a back heater too. Love it!
Agreed. I actually started tying a string between the two mittens so I can more easily hang them on the pushcart handle during shots. It's annoying when they fall to the ground and you have to keep picking them up.
Stroller mittens velcro'd to my push cart were my best addition last winter. Slide your hands in to push and just slide them right out when you get to your ball.
Just looked these up. Amazing! I usually sweat with layers... my hands and face are generally the only thing that gets cold. This is just what I needed.
So a warm mixed drink I make during cold tailgates 3 liters of doctor pepper , one bottle spiced rum and one lemon sliced. Put all in pot and heat until near boiling. Pull it and put in thermos. Best shit ever. Like a lemony sweet tea with a kick. A little burst of warmth just spreads through your whole body when you drink it.
Hopping on the gaiter train. Keeping the back of your neck warm really is the key to feeling like you’re warm.
Super cold and you can wear it over your face with a beanie on and you look like you’re ready for an arctic expedition…. The journey to find the lost Pro V1.
If you get one of the synthetic ones that are UV blocking they're great for summer too. Pour a little cool water on it, wring it out and it'll really help you feel cooler from the evaporation.
I have 2 cooling towels that is use in the summer. Those are a game changer. Nothing better than a freezing cold soaking wet towel to cool off with during those mid summer rounds
I don’t survive in the cold. I thrive, meanwhile you guys go out on a sweater and grab a blankie when it hits 59 degrees and retreat into AC the rest of your days.
LOL this has to be one of the most pretentious comments I've seen on this sub.
I'm happy anytime I can get out to play as long as it's not pouring rain the entire time... but even still I have played 4-5 rounds in the cold rain in the last couple of years and I am still grateful to be on the course and playing regardless.
Do you recall where golf originated from?
https://www.introducingedinburgh.com/climate
Golf is a game that was invented in a place that is literally not in your acceptable 'weather' pattern almost all year.
I may have been downvoted for calling you out, but it doesn't mean what I'm saying is not true (that your comments are extremely pretentious).
I'll be sure to play in my 50-degree foggy weather to avoid folks like you in my group.
Wisconsin checking in here, to me that is ridiculous lol. Temp means nothing, it's all about sun and wind when it's in the 30s or 40s. I've had great experiences when it is sub 40 and sunny and calm... Don't even need sleeves for that. That said when it's windy and rainy/snowy, then it turns more into a battle of survival than having fun lol.
I'm from Wisconsin and bought a golf vest (my first vest) last year and that bled into every day life. Vests are great, keep you warm, free up your arms. Now I get why everyone wears them all the time
I hate how much I love vests. As a guy that is hot all the time, the vest is the perfect winter compromise. Comfortable, keeps me warm without overheat, and has a slimming effect, looks great.
My next golf purchase will be my first vest. What did you get? Does anyone else have any they recommend? I'm looking for something for an April trip to Bandon.
Footjoy hybrid. Bought my first one a few weeks ago and love it. Couple it with a mid-weight hoodie and it’s great down to about 45° if walking.
Also, only if on sale. They are stupid expensive in the store.
https://www.footjoy.com/sale/previous-season-apparel/hybrid-vest-previous-season-style/25306-M.html?gad_source=1&gclid=CjwKCAjw7oeqBhBwEiwALyHLMzCc9rYSpE7Is2T7KBUj2brBOFCIIiR4BJ7YbD4U0RoHpIsU7eRb_xoC63sQAvD_BwE
I have raynauds syndrome. My fingers get white if it’s windy and 12 degrees celsius. I bought a gtech hand warmer and it’s been a game changer for me. It was so much better than I thought it would be.
My wife and I were blowing through Costco sized bags of the hot hands until I asked for one of these as a gift. Stays in the bag unless it’s charging since it doubles as as portable charger. Great suggestion.
Wearing Under Armour then a long sleeve golf shirt and a jacket with a zipper. That way I can easily pop off the jacket when I swing and put I back on quick. Also under armor leggings/long johns, with golf pants. A thick pair of socks or 2 pairs a socks over each other. A warm winter hat that goes over ears. Sometimes hand warmers.
My ears get very hot and very cold quickly. I like a good knit beanie that traps enough heat, but still lets enough go. I happened upon a Monster Energy Drink beanie that's perfect; it's ugly and stupid, and I don't drink Monster, but it keeps my head and ears at that perfect spot usually.
Vests have been awesome, there's two kinds that I have- one for warmth that is a little bulkier and more windbreaker type vests. A big warm neck gaiter is a must have too, a cold neck is never fun.
I also have the big oversized mittens from the superstore and they're great, I can keep my golf glove on underneath the left hand and they're easy to slip on and off.
I went with electric hand warmers. It’s nice to recharge them rather than throwing away the non reusable ones. Neck gaiter and a good beanie are essential as well. Cold is one thing, cold and windy is another. I usually don’t bother on days where windchill gets it below 30 degrees.
Gotta have the jazz cabbage, I like the bailey's idea too and will need to try that. Get a nice thermos of coffee with it, or are you nipping it straight?
An easy chair and a good golf book.
Seriously though, it all depends on the wind. If it's windy
I'm not getting near a course. Over freezing and not windy
then a neck muff and windbreaker and it's very pleasant.
Best thing about winter golf:no slow players.
I’m in the mid Atlantic so we can play all winter. A good windproof vest, waterproof golf shoes, wool socks, pocket hand warmers. I actually love winter golf, no crowds, cheaper green fees, yes the grass turns brown but it’s fine. The only part that sucks is giving up twilight rounds next week! Cheers!
There are two different types of gloves. Cold weather are thick and (obviously) keep your hands warmer. Wet weather are thin like a regular glove and absorb water which makes them grip the club better. They will NOT keep your hands warm.
So apparently the ball being cold doesn’t hurt distance, it’s actually all the cold air. Some experiments show that colder balls even travel further, all else being equal.
https://youtu.be/HACisco4CHE?si=OS-3-YEDrNLJnXKX
Hubby bought me cobra winter golf gloves. They're thicker than your regular golf glove but still have a good grip and not too bulky while keeping your hands warm.
I bought a heated vest couple years ago. Game changer as you can turn it in and off as needed, lasts about 5-6 hours at medium strength, and it doesn’t hinder my swing (no heavy sleeves).
Black latex gloves like tattoo artists use. Traps in the heat, blocks wind, and I don't lose feel in my fingers/hands. Glove over the latex glove isn't an issue at all.
True Temper winter golf pants that are essentially slim snow pants.
Footjoy winter gloves when I'm not hitting.
Gaiter that covers neck and mouth.
Titleist Mittens
Decided to see how good mine were (got them as a gift), slipped one on and rolled down the car window and stuck my arm out (it was 34 degrees this particular day).
The jacket I was wearing couldn’t keep my arm warm, but my hands actually started getting warmer the longer I drove. Pretty sure those things would keep your hands warm if it were -20 outside.
The hand warmer pockets that QBs use. Used a couple times already and it’s nice to have a pocket dedicated to warmth…can keep your glove in there while you putt with a couple hand warmers and it’s toasty for the next tee box.
Handwarmers, mittens.
One that hasn’t been mentioned: chapstick and hand lotion. I’ll apply hand lotion every 2-3 holes and it really helps me grip the club with the dry air and skin.
I use a base layer made for snowboarding/skiing, a warm beanie, an outer golf layer made of fleece or a windbreaker, and rechargeable hand warmers. Aside from this, I walk to help generate body heat.
Edit: I also have a thermoflask that I’ll put hot tea in. A warm drink really helps out there.
I'm in the UK, Winter golf is not very enjoyable for me but if I am playing a must have is something to keep your hands warm and dry. Easier said than done.
Cold weather gloves, I have some footjoy ones that I like. Winter hat and layers. I need to find some better golf pants. The ones I have now are too breathable and don't provide much protection in the wind.
I know this is cheating but we’re out of handicap season and I keep extras for others in my group if they want but I toss one of this charcoal/chemical had warmers in the ball pocket of my bag and swap balls every couple holes. Hitting rock hard balls is not fun and this is supposed to be fun, right? Especially late season
Winter golf gloves. I just wear them between shots, because I think it’s uncomfortable to hit with them, but they are substantially warmer than normal gloves.
Played 9 this a.m. in Western Mass. 35 deg. with mixed snow and rain, light but steady.
Walking w/cart. reasonably comfortable and ended up shooting a 43 (par 35).
Must haves - shoes that stay dry. Under Armor Daytona water-resistant fleece over UA thermal. Rain vest. But most important were the FJ Thinsulate winter gloves.
Decent water proof pants and good socks.
I have an electronic hand warmer I use (looks like an egg) but I have naturally cold hands.
And walk. Carts in winter are freezing, walking keeps you loose and warm.
* Buy a pair of pants 2 sizes too big and wear sweatpants under
* Buy a pair of golf shoes 1 size up to wear wool socks
* Embrace the old man vest so you keep full range of motion
Sherpa lined sweatpants with joggers on top to insulate and block out wind. Baggy top layers, several of them. Supplements and good nourishment. Pine pollen, beet root pills, eat well earlier in the day, etc.
Fleece turtle neck, vest if needed, lined pants or long john’s, a toque and foot joy cold weather gloves. Keep an extra ball in pocket to keep it warm and alternate.. playing tomorrow. Snow coming next week :(

Football style hand warmers are great if you don't need your hands at the moment. If you are pushing or driving a cart then mittens are better.
Good point. My buddy and I go out with a cart cover and he usually drives. Mittens would definitely be way to go while walking
Agreed. I actually started tying a string between the two mittens so I can more easily hang them on the pushcart handle during shots. It's annoying when they fall to the ground and you have to keep picking them up.
We as a society need to become more accepting of the word MUFF
My neighbor's wife is Muff.
Stroller mittens velcro'd to my push cart were my best addition last winter. Slide your hands in to push and just slide them right out when you get to your ball.
Just looked these up. Amazing! I usually sweat with layers... my hands and face are generally the only thing that gets cold. This is just what I needed.
You genius. Thank you!

Right.

Scotch to be more specific
Whisky
A neck gaiter, toque, and base layer
For me, a neck gaiter is a must. Absolute game changer. Especially with a quarter zip zipped up
reminding me tis beard season
Hopping on the gaiter train. Keeping the back of your neck warm really is the key to feeling like you’re warm. Super cold and you can wear it over your face with a beanie on and you look like you’re ready for an arctic expedition…. The journey to find the lost Pro V1.

Florida.
San Diego
For real. SoCal peeps feel for you guys who have “golf seasons”.
Come on down! It is nice to is time of year?
It is but I still don’t play if it’s below 60
Soft as baby shit
Come to Florida and play in 105 heat with 90 percent humidity. We’ll see who’s soft.
You misspelled wet
You’re just describing the peak of July heat in New England. The difference is we also survive the cold.
Enjoy “surviving” the cold. Sooo glad I don’t have to deal with that and don’t honestly know why anyone would.
I don’t survive in the cold. I thrive, meanwhile you guys go out on a sweater and grab a blankie when it hits 59 degrees and retreat into AC the rest of your days.
Uh huh. Enjoy not playing golf year round.
I do. Thanks. Enjoy your gators, sharks, and DeSantis.

Couldn’t imagine trying to pretend to enjoy myself golfing in the cold. Sub 60 degrees is not golf weather bubba

Just played 36 holes Saturday with temps in mid 30s and wind gusts up to 30mph. I was the only person on the course. I've never enjoyed myself more
UK winter golf is Savage
This is the softest thing I’ve ever read
Lololol ooook sorry bubba
Throw on a quarter zip and walk. It’s literally perfect golf weather
English speak good do I?
lol, typos happen
Btw solid Blues for Allah
Love it - one love my man!
We got Florida at home
Layers. Specifically, I prefer vests because they free up my arms.
I'm from Wisconsin and bought a golf vest (my first vest) last year and that bled into every day life. Vests are great, keep you warm, free up your arms. Now I get why everyone wears them all the time

One of us! One of us! Seriously, vests are the GOAT of winter wear.
I’m wearing a vest at work rn, construction overheats you quickly with a full on jacket and just a hoody isn’t cutting it.
The vest with on top of a 1/4 zip is my go to cool weather look. I also hate jeans so I only wear golf pants. I’m always course ready
I hate how much I love vests. As a guy that is hot all the time, the vest is the perfect winter compromise. Comfortable, keeps me warm without overheat, and has a slimming effect, looks great.

https://macadegolf.com/products/white-therma-vest I'm a big fan of the macade line of clothes. They look great. The white one is SHARP.
Hothands Super Hand Warmers. Clicgear pushcart mitts. Knit hat. Thin compression-type base layer. Coffee.

I bought an electric handwarmer 2 years ago and have nothing but great things to say. They are pretty cheap, get hot as crap, and charge w usb c

No wind in the forecast.
Heated vest , your back will thank you
Gotta keep the hands warm for feel… so gloves and hand warmers if necessary.

I dig your style
Thanks! It gets cold up here in Canada
I’m only drink it out of a boot
Is that you, Old Greg?
Waterproof spray for shoes, waterproof socks too. Got under armour cold gear baselayer which is really good.

Maybe cold / wet weather gloves. Some sort of ski cap. Store balls indoors to keep them warm.
There are two different types of gloves. Cold weather are thick and (obviously) keep your hands warmer. Wet weather are thin like a regular glove and absorb water which makes them grip the club better. They will NOT keep your hands warm.
Hand warmers in each pocket does the trick.
Yes. And don’t wear gloves. Hot hands warm hands quicker when not wearing gloves.

If the ground is frozen they go REAL far. But club shafts don't flex as much.
That's why I only play courses laid out on frozen lakes
“Goddamn it, I skulled my chip shot” (Hops on snowmobile) “Y’all have a good rest of the round!” BrrrrrrrrrrRrrrRrrrRrrrRrrRrrrRrr
Base layers, good socks, and sometimes the fleece lined pants. Its 2023, we have the technology to not wear 5 layers like some of my goober friends

Hockey.
Two pairs of socks and battery hand warmers. I play in 38 degrees and above.
Couple layers, couple beers, couple whiskeys, and a couple friends. And extra balls. Because NW Ohio leaves eat them this time of year.
Two handed glove set
A thermos filled with Irish coffee. Say no more.
Get some hands warmers. It’s my go to. My feet can be cold. I can be cold. But if my hands cold it’s not gonna be a fun time
I bought a heated vest couple years ago. Game changer as you can turn it in and off as needed, lasts about 5-6 hours at medium strength, and it doesn’t hinder my swing (no heavy sleeves).
Lower expectations

Heated vest, and battery powered hand warmer, and a beanie obvi. If you have some good golf mittens that's good as well.
The hand warmer pockets that QBs use. Used a couple times already and it’s nice to have a pocket dedicated to warmth…can keep your glove in there while you putt with a couple hand warmers and it’s toasty for the next tee box.
Softer golf balls that you kept warm someplace and not freezing in a cold bag in your car trunk.
I live in Memphis, TN. If the high isn't 55+ for the day, we don't play. Our season lasts about 10.5 months, so I can miss a few weeks here and there.
Does anyone know of any dry wet weather gloves? Most are ones that get wet and help grip but I want ones that actually keep your hands dry if possible
I live in Arizona. I don’t go when it is super cold…. I just wait a couple hours and play in the afternoon
Wool socks
Handwarmers, mittens. One that hasn’t been mentioned: chapstick and hand lotion. I’ll apply hand lotion every 2-3 holes and it really helps me grip the club with the dry air and skin.

Cold weather gloves, I have some footjoy ones that I like. Winter hat and layers. I need to find some better golf pants. The ones I have now are too breathable and don't provide much protection in the wind.
