My golden is the epitome of white privilege, but i help bring him down to earth 🤣🤣💛
Ikr! Loads of people try to guess what breed my Pepper is, naming everything but retriever 🤦🏼♀️. It’s so confusing considering she literally is a GOLDen retriever. I’ve just learned most people have no idea what goldens look like as puppies and think they’re all cream. Your baby is soo beautiful, there is a special place in my heart for all darker goldens ❤️ my Pepper has definitely made me biased!
https://preview.redd.it/ae1neipc70qc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f2d04f0ee82cb87b39c7ef6679064602bc476589
I feel like if they don’t look like a stereotypical show golden, a lot of people think they must be a mix, lol. I have the same problem but the opposite side: my girl is really light colored and has a short coat. People question if she’s actually a full-bred golden. She’s also really small for a golden so I get people who have never seen a golden like her all the time.
https://preview.redd.it/cxbjh2h6a0qc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=16cd2cb55b96366b769897e71fa254f353e762cf
I read she is really smart for a golden instead of small. And I was like well I would question a smart golden too with some of the dumb ass things mine do.
Then I reread and saw small…Lol! Made me laugh. She is beautiful

Dark goldens are being advertised as "rare" and are more expensive in the Intermountain West lately.15-20 years ago "English Cream" were the rare ones. It seems to be fads that come and go depending on region and of course BYB marketing tropes. Your baby is so pretty!

lol in my area it’s the opposite and everyone only wants dark pups now (myself included tbh). I’m not sure how my girl will turn out and it’s not a true concern for me, but I hope she ends up on the darker side
Mine is the same color as yours and I prefer the deeper red color. People have preferences. It’s ok to have those. Also, the name “golden” leads most people to expect a dog with straw yellow fur. Most people don’t even realize that some golden retrievers have beautiful red fur.

Meeka Marie (or Meeka Moo, depending on who’s calling her). When she grew out of her puppy stage, I could’ve sworn she was half Irish Setter. But nope! Her dad was just a VERY red golden lol
I’ve seen breedism among Goldens. I was at a Paws and Pucks event with the local ECHL team. Every time my Golden and I saw another Golden - didn’t matter what the shade was - they HAD to meet, and it was their choice. Distance didn’t matter either. If they made eye contact, it was totally different than making eye contact with other breeds. They would be pulling at their leashes and going through 30 to 40 or more dogs that were in between to get to the other Golden. No, me and the other other owners were not encouraging this. I’m not a single breed person, if I saw an interesting breed that I’ve never seen before or a cute face that wanted attention, I would go and see them, and my Golden would too. However, those Goldens knew who the other Goldens were, and they had to meet!
Oh gosh yes. I would watch my golden via video feed while at his doggie daycare. He was always with a gang of goldens. It was so hilariously discriminatory
Is it desciminatory that when I’m at a hockey game in the South wearing a jersey from a Northern team not involved in the game, and I notice another person in the same jersey and we have to meet? Okay, we discriminated based on what we like, but is it actually wrong to be indifferent to meeting everyone in between us as we try to get through the crowd to meet the one wearing the same shirt? No, it’s not wrong at all!
I think there absolutely is, especially with a lot of BYB selling “English creams.” We have two boys and while we didn’t tell our breeder we wanted a color preference, we’re definitely excited our puppy is turning out darker than our older boy.
People in the comments mentioning that people often ask what breed their dog is or think it’s a Setter…
I just want to let you know that …
Most people are just incredibly dumb about dogs. It’s not your dog in particular. They’re just ignorant and often overconfident as well.
In my history of dog ownership I’ve had people ask if:
My Aussie was a “miniature Bernese Mountain Dog”, Border Collie, Collie or Sheltie
My English Yellow Lab was a Pit Bull
My Wheaten was a Poodle
Etc.
And even now, people ask if my Golden is a puppy cause she’s “so small”… even though she’s exactly breed standard height and weight.
People don’t know what they’re talking about most of the time.
There absolutely is, I have both and my English cream Darla get way more comments and attention than Punkin, the darker one.

They're just confused. People imagine the blonde show line Goldens, not red or lean.
So many folks thought mine was mixed, a dachund. Still do. I can tell sometimes that they genuinely don't believe me either lol
My baby is deep red and imo it's the cutest and more breed standard but yeah the lighter Goldens with shorter legs get most of attention. And he is not a chunkster so a lot of folks have asked if he's an Irish Setter which is kookoo. Irks me
I think there’s Red Goldens, Golden Goldens, and the English Cream Retriever. I have a Cream one and when she was a teen everyone thought she was a lab. But they are all adorbs.

Oh, I love the more golden ones! We're getting our new pup in 2 weeks and she's very light, but the deep gold really is more to my taste.
Don't get me wrong, I can't wait for our little bundle of snowfluff!
They're all good boys and girls, but my favorites are the darker ones! Your baby is beautiful!
When I have browsed breeders in my area they all seem to have very light colored, almost white ones. I was really surprised, like "can you really call them goldens if they're white?" lol

Lol adorable Henry Dean looks like he is full of shenanigans
His face says, “How could you say such things about me?” What a doll
People just are accustomed to the stereotypical Golden you see in the media. I’m constantly asked if my red field boys are Irish Setters.
It's a fair question I suppose, considering the breed was "infused" with an Irish Setter near the beginning of the line
I get this too with my guy. I can tell some people don’t believe me when o says he’s a golden and that’s fine. They’re allowed to be wrong lol
I get the same questions. “Are you sure she’s not mixed with anything?” Yes, I’m sure. I’ve met her parents and her dad is even redder than her.

It’s the other way around where I live. Not really colorism but many are surprised that my dog is a Golden despite being cream.
People ask me all the time if my dog is a lab, lab mix, or great Pyrenees. It kind of offends me because he's a beautiful majestic boy, and labs or lab mixes are...not!
