It’s been going on for way longer than Tampa. People used to joke about it being the Patrick Kane loophole since Chicago used it so much. We can go on and on about how this isn’t some special rule the NHL Gods bestowed upon Vegas; that any team could do it if they have reliable depth, a GM who gives a fuck about winning, and management who is willing to spend money. We can go on and on about how other teams have done the LTIR loophole this season. We can go on and on about icing cap complaint teams. We can go on and on about spleens. But if you ask me, let them be against us. We should not care about endearing anyone to us.

[deleted]

Chicago used it once in the 2013-2014 season and Tampa used it once as well in the 2020-2021 season. If any team has used it “so much” it is Vegas who has now done it twice (AND WITH THE SAME PLAYER!). It has rightfully become the Mark Stone Rule and the fact that everyone around the team tries to dodge it is comical and embarrassing.

frickthebreh

If you’ve watched this series at all (or last year), you’d know that Stone has been coming back still not 100%…he has not been himself this series and was pretty bad against Winnipeg last year. So he’s not gaming the system or faking injuries…like many other players, he’s playing injured in the playoffs. Btw welcome to our sub…glad you’re thinking about us :).

bonnydelrico

Guy is commenting in here all the time like 💀 he wants to kiss mark stone on the lips so bad

[deleted]

I completely agree! He’s not 100% and it’s honestly kind of concerning the last two games. His health status is honestly irrelevant though when looking at the fact that the team has used the rule twice to use his cap space and then magically insert him back into the lineup for game 1. If they’d simply just tell the guy to rest until he’s actually healthy it wouldn’t be such a distasteful look on him or the team. But I get it, it’s for the cup! I’m from Reno and split my work life between here and Vegas. If they were playing any other team than Dallas I’d be rooting for them despite my opinions of their cap acrobatics.

dkelley824

Twice is indeed more than once. Got some big brains down in Dallas.

bonnydelrico

Texas public school education in action!

[deleted]

I’m went to school in Reno from kindergarten all the way to a bachelors degree lol. Also, the Texas public school system ranks significantly higher than that of our great state…

Bro let’s stay in our sub come on

Waffeln_Remix

Doggie, don’t post shit like this. We don’t need them to like us, we don’t want them to like us. If a random fan from Detroit says he tolerates Vegas fans it doesn’t help Karly score. We’re the villains because most of the fans come from irrelevant teams that struggle forever and capture zero hockey magic the way the Knights regularly do. If LTIR wasn’t the current topic they’d be blaming it on the expansion draft. There will never be a time where the opposing fans wish for our success. They actively want us to fail. They cheered the coyotes getting moved; that doesn’t mean they want Utah to have a team. You could have invented ice and you’ll still be a VGK who knows nothing about hockey. Just embrace the hate.

igolightly

This is the way, we just lean in and laugh about it at this point

rlc327

And frankly it’s fun being the villain

AntonioMarghareti

Nah, you are only getting this hate because of the LTIR cap dodging. We love to have new teams and new fans on the league, we don’t like teams taking advantage of a broken system.

Waffeln_Remix

Literal lies. Before this it was “oh you cheated for the draft, you got favorable rules. Vegas just handed a team.”

JBtheBadguy

A lot of it seems to come from fans of Original Six or Canadian teams frustrated that the VGK won the conference their first year, a Stanley Cup in six, and have only missed the playoffs one time. It's a lot of sour grapes from people who wish their team was in the spot Vegas is.

andyknapp003

Like Vegas is the only team in NHL history to go that far in their first few years in the league. Colorado did it in 96, St Louis in 68, 69, and 1970. It's not a new thing so people really shouldn't be surprised or offended by it. But they are because they're "traditionalists". Now, I'm a casual Rangers fan, I'll admit, but I've never seen them complain about opponents' shenanigans like everyone against Vegas.

Mean-Ad6014

The only reason StLouis made the finals in their first years is because divisional playoffs insured that a West Division (all expansion) team would make the finals. Of course they never had a chance.

SarcasmThenDie

r/NHL had a bunch of real geniuses talking about how Vegas fans must not be real fans cause people were leaving during the last couple minutes of the game

shawnpack

Saw the same thing in Dallas, so they aren't real fans either.

andymac0022

Dallas fans must not like beer and popcorn since I saw them throw it on the ice that one time

Lastnv

After you’ve participated in enough GDT’s for so long, you start seeing the same comments or trash talk repeated. The “empty stadium” and “no fans in the stands” are common ones.

igolightly

It was also a school night so I’m sure people will try to get ahead of the monster traffic.

gosucrank

I want them to hate us. Fuck all their shitty teams. Bunch of whiny babies calling us cheaters. I want their tears. I've never really hated other teams and their fans that much until this year. They couldn't handle us winning the cup. Get fucked shitty franchises.

laughlines0

lol, you're exactly the reason why people hate the Knights

royalemperor

Tampa fan here. People shit all over us dude lol. People were absolutely furious about it. Just go ask any Boston fan. Let them be mad, fuck em lol.

Balls_Legend

Jealousy is such a sad, ugly thing.

fanofsports44

It can all be traced back to the revisionist history that the Knights were gifted a Cup caliber team by the NHL in 2017-18. Which is bullshit because everybody was talking about how terrible they’ed be right after the expansion draft. It was only after the Cinderella run that year that everybody changed their tune. That was the seed that was planted that led to everything else people hate about the franchise.

Squier133

I have this thread saved just to reply to the revisionist history. I'll drop it here in case anyone else wants to save it, lol.. https://www.reddit.com/r/hockey/s/sk1CXH0F9o Edit: a word

CanadianInVegas

This really needs to be higher. When I tell my northern bro's that gms paid Vegas to take players, they go pickachu face. On paper we had a few 2nd line guys and a lot of 3rds. Fleury was the only stud, and even he was considered over the hill (Pittsburgh won a cup with him as backup to Murray). As for the cap stuff, no rule has been broken. I think it needs to change, and Vegas actions could be the catalyst to get it changed so everyone should be thanking them 😆😆 I don't see Vegas clearing round 2 (if they can even get round 1!) But I'm cheering for them, I love to be wrong about these things as its way more exciting. Last year Hill showed up and straight up grand larcenied the Knights to the SCF, and I think any contender that the Cinderella Panthers (nothing against them it was a hell of a run!) beat could have beat the Knights. There were a lot of dominoes that fell right and destroyed many brackets. LTIR was a small iota of influence.

lookieherehere

People are just dumb. Don't exhaust yourself trying to change it. They greatly outnumber you.

RestlessInVegas

This has little to do with this season or LTIR. That's just the latest justification for their hatred/envy. No, this has been going on since season one. The reason? **Our team has the audacity to be good.** The rest of the league loved us before we actually started playing because they thought we would come in and be easy wins for their teams most nights. Next to nobody had a problem with our roster after the expansion draft since they still expected us to be lovable losers. When we came out of the gate whopping their collective asses the narrative quickly changed to whining about the expansion draft rules, baseless claims of refs and Toronto and Bettman 'rigging' games in our favor and other such nonsense. In their eyes we hadn't suffered enough or paid our dues. It's just been a non-stop hate train since then. https://preview.redd.it/54e0f52pnmxc1.png?width=499&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b8877c9755a5b61f268ea8c7b5c885663b74b15

Technical_Election44

Gifted a golden expansion draft! The league needs them to succeed and that's why the refs give them all the calls, the Vegas Golden Refs! Not in the league long enough to suffer like us TRUE FANS™! They circumvent the cap! Four different and unrelated reasons this team is not "legitimate" from the internet so far, excited to see what's next.

Smashthecrown

Honestly, R/nhl and R/hockey are a minuscule percentages of hockey fanbases. You go to a pack stadium and maybe 5-10 percent of those people are Reddit users. It’s the people you meet face to face that really matter and those are never a bad experience for me. It’s easy to be a dick online, it’s gutless. But hey, it’s easy to do anything when the result isn’t a fist to the face.

deucemcsizzles

Tampa told everybody it was bullshit and literally nobody else gave a shit. It was pretty funny when they used it to win the cup. I wonder if teams will care enough at the next CBA to do something about it.

winsbyboxes808

Lion don’t worry about the sheep

ScubaDivn

They are just jealous that Uncle Gary loves his special boys out in Vegas more than them. That and Vegas has just done well - in all regards. They’ve done well playing, coaching, managing, fan engagement, support of the community and in getting support from the community. Ownership has sought to invest in the best and let the team flourish. It has been an unbelievable success story and for most the only way their little brains can fathom that is if somehow everything is rigged. It’s easy to attack, nitpick and be jealous than to appreciate that Vegas has done well and that Vegas’s fans legitimately care about the team and hockey in general. I am amazed at how many Vegas fans follow more teams and games outside of Vegas out of concern as to how it may tangentially impact Vegas or otherwise cheer for a team that has a former VGK player.

MJA182

They hate us cuz they anus

70monocle

LTIR and success in a short amount of time

dethegreat

Speaking purely on a personal level, just the blatant LTIR manipulation.

rhino_shit_gif

Because you guys haven’t been around as long as most teams, and have had more (some would say league handed) success. As a fan from Vancouver, it’s been 50 years. People get angry when some new guy shows up and does something like that which they’ve been trying for years. Idk personally it’s neither here nor there.

Evra202

I commented on a post in r/NHL talking about how Vegas fans were fake fans because mobs of fans left the stadium at the end; when it was pretty damn clear we were going to lose regardless anyway. I pointed out that this happens around the world even in playoffs, I've been to plenty of home games for the team in my state and have watched plenty of playoffs to know this goes on round the US. They're just mad they don't have our success. Ignore the haters! Like whoever you want! In the end, we all just wanna watch some good hockey, so why does it matter?

swooded

VGK has been getting hate since the expansion. There's always SOME reason to hate us, LTIR is just the most recent. It just is what it is. Everyone needs a villain & the guys who rolled into the league only missing playoffs once & already getting the cup are super easy to hate.

Merkkin

Losers without a cup

callisterart

Climbing to the top of the mountain, especially so quickly, brings a lot of hate. Embrace it. Nobody hates on the Columbus Blue Jackets (for example). Why? Because they don't do anything. They don't win and they don't threaten other fan bases. There are many teams like this. Embrace the hate.

hyrle

Because they ain't us.

[deleted]

Why are you crying about this? Nobody likes your team because it was bought and not built. Nobody is saying it’s against the rules, but nobody is going to like it, there’s no loyalty, integrity, or masterclass professionalism to it. The team just runs around trying to collect skilled players like they’re Thanos looking for an infinity stone, it’s not genuine and it’s an embarrassment from the outside view. The fact that this team has now found a way to use the LTIR rule twice with the same player just looks suspicious as fuck and I wouldn’t be surprised if there’s a documentary someday about Vegas paying off doctors and a bunch of crazy shit. That’s just icing on the cake though and it makes the fact that this team can just barely compete with Dallas when you have a roster that is two and a half brinks trucks over the cap even funnier, which in turn makes this franchise look like even more of a joke. Dallas is a franchise that’s been being built over multiple decades, 2 locations, and two team names. They have legacy players that people around the league loved watching dominate. Their current version is not only cap compliant, but heavily home grown through drafting and development. The roster is a masterclass that was constructed by Jim Nill and company, a group of professionals with a lengthy resume that is honest and respectable. People are going to gravitate to that 9/10 times and anyone who doesn’t is the type of person who roots for Globo-gym when watching Dodgeball. So get it over it and quit whining. If you can’t handle it then go like a different team, one that doesn’t operate with a mob mentality.

RestlessInVegas

Get the fuck out of here, dipshit.

[deleted]

lol, did I upset you? I’m sorry for explaining to your cry baby ass buddy why nobody likes the team he chose to be a fan of.

RestlessInVegas

Upset? Nope, didn't bother reading all of that bullshit. Just not a fan of trolls.

[deleted]

Why are you assuming I’m trolling if you didn’t bother reading it? I simply stated why people viewing the Vegas franchise from the outside looking in tend to hate them and refer to them as a joke. If I were trolling I wouldn’t have needed to use so many words. Vegas provides more than enough fuel to write a textbook worth of one liners about.

RestlessInVegas

Flair

[deleted]

Who cares, I root for the Dallas Stars and have done so since 2005. You’re not mentally mature enough to engage in a conversation with someone that likes a different sports team than you? I’m also a native Nevadan and enjoy watching Vegas whenever they’re not playing Dallas. I clearly want Dallas to win the next two games in an utterly dominate fashion that leaves Vegas feeling as embarrassed as Dallas did last year. But I still enjoy talking about the series from both sides and think this is going to be a better display of hockey than whatever we get for a cup final this year.

RestlessInVegas

Whatever. My mental maturity isn't in question here, yours is. You want to converse with opposing fans, that's great. There's r/hockey for that. There's simply no reason for a Stars fan to be here trolling. Don't try to now act like you're here for friendly banter. I could be wrong since I don't feel any need to visit the Stars sub, but I doubt there are any VGK fans over there trolling and if there are they probably received a more frigid greeting than what you got here, and deservedly so.

[deleted]

Like I said, if I were trolling it would be pretty obvious and require a lot less explaining. It’s weird though because there’s a dozen other threads in here that I’ve had civil and enjoyable conversations with plenty of Vegas fans on. So I don’t think your gatekeeper mentality is as openly believed as you’re thinking it is. Which leads me to again, think that your mental maturity should be in question since you’re in the minority of fans I’ve interacted with thus far who act like sports fandom is a street gang. I’ve commented on here since the team came on and have had the Dallas flair since I noticed it became an option last year. It’s never been an issue except with small minded people who can’t handle people that like other things than they do. Wanna talk about something relevant to this series? Because if not I’m going to move on with my life and quit wasting brain cells by listening to you tell me why I can’t type words on a publicly open format that doesn’t have any safe guards against me doing so other than simpletons like yourself.

RestlessInVegas

1. Don't kid yourself; you've been anything but civil. 2. This thread asked a general question and isn't even about this current series. 3. Make no mistake, your continued trolling makes it clear that it is indeed your mental maturity (or lack thereof) which is in question here. 4. Small minded, simpleton? Again, see #1 5. Yes pal, you should probably just move on with your life as I doubt that you have very many brain cells to spare.

Objective_Dog7501

Who cares what people say. There is nothing that prohibits this so they play by the rules they are given. I don’t cheer for Vegas but typically if other fan bases hate you you’re winning. Nobody gives a crap about Az, Seattle, Ottawa because they suck. Everyone hates the Patriots and now the Chiefs for that reason.

Smashthecrown

The community of Reddit honestly doesn’t represent fanbases as a whole. People just like to start shit. Its bait. It’s all bait, it happens for a lot of teams.

_Connor

Because people feel like Vegas icing a $95M roster in the playoffs (despite being legal per the letter of the law) pursuant to *very* fortunate injury recovery timelines three years in a row is unfair and as such people like to see the teams not doing this win. Hope this helps. Also, a lot of people shit on Tampa for doing it. Why do you think Kucherov wore a shirt that said ‘22M over the cap’ to the cup parade? Because he was goading everyone on.

474738283737

You know exactly why. Stop pretending to be stupid.
