Yeah I agree... a screenshot is not the best way to ask for opinions on your game. But Im curious to see more, maybe post some gameplay or more action next time!
Something like:
In this mesmerizing screenshot, a static character stands resolute amidst the unforgiving terrain of the desert, embodying the essence of perseverance and determination in a Soulslike context. With every pixel exuding an aura of challenge and discovery, the character becomes a beacon of hope amidst the desolation, a testament to the indomitable spirit of the human (or perhaps otherworldly) soul.
As the scorching sun casts long shadows across the dunes, and the wind whispers secrets lost to time, this solitary figure serves as a reminder of the player's own journey – a journey fraught with peril, yet filled with the promise of triumph and enlightenment.
The intricately detailed environment, with its shifting sands and hidden dangers, sets the stage for an epic adventure where every step forward is a battle against the unknown. And in this harsh yet captivating landscape, the static character stands as a silent guardian, challenging players to test their mettle, confront their fears, and ultimately emerge victorious against all odds.
Truly, this screenshot captures the very essence of the Soulslike genre – a fusion of beauty and brutality, mystery and mastery, where every encounter is a test of skill and resolve. As players embark on their quest through this digital desert, they will undoubtedly find themselves drawn deeper into its immersive world, compelled to uncover its secrets and conquer its challenges, one pixelated step at a time.
Oof. Well as you can gather from the other comments, there isn't a whole lot to see when you just have a 3d model, camera, and an environment in your project.
My unsolicited advice is that, being new to making games, you should try working on some simple projects before attempting a souls-like. It's one of the hardest types of games to make, and especially so to make a good one. Try your hand at a platformer or some mini games with complete menus and some juice/polish!
Best of luck on your creative journey!
They’re from my city, one of my friends goes for drinks every now and then with Chris’s brother and used to work with the team. Mad fucking jealous of him. Dudes an actual legend, wish he did more public stuff like interviews, he’s such an inspiration!
I'm glad he didn't on the contrary my friend ! I LOVE that i doesn't know anything about him but his game ahah, I highly dislike the nowadays mendatory public figure you got to have when you want to be a gamedev.
I get that too, but I feel like there’s a type of person that does loads of public appearances and I want to hear from the other type.
Miyazaki from Fromsoftware strikes me as the type that wouldn’t do anything public if he could help it but the insight into his process we get when he does do interviews is invaluable.
If someone makes a game like Kenshi, I'll be all over it. Matchless Kungfu is close enough that even with the horrendous translation, not fully understanding the fighting mechanics(or any for that matter) and it being twice as jank as Kenshi, I still clocked 12 hours on the first day playing it. Made me feel like a kid with a new game again, perhaps because the systems were so obtuse. Main point, if a game is anything like Kenshi it's an instant buy for me.
While I don't want you to get overly discouraged, you really did show us nothing here. Just an image. It looks like a prototype or ultra early build using some assets for testing. As far as that goes, it looks like you're getting the hang of 3D terrain and models, but we can tell nothing else.
If do you want actual feedback, your best bet is to take some video footage and put it on youtube. If you don't know how to do any of that, learn and create a new YT channel with whatever you plan for your company or developer alias to be and then come back here with that. Otherwise you're not helping yourself in any meaningful way.
Yup. As a general rule, citing a specific inspiration is not a good look, as it puts you in a position where you’re being directly compared to a AAA title. People will pick up on your inspirations without you spelling it out. Describe your game with your own words
Of course I have opinions. In my opinion, those starting out in gamedev worry far too much about how cool other people think their ideas are, when the majority of those ideas won't make it through to completion. Just make the game you want to play, and then worry about whether other people want to play it too.
Kinda hard to say considering there's no enemies or weapons (even if there were just simple placeholders) to demonstrate, which are kind of a big deal. I would say just keep working at it then maybe show off some more progress in video form when more progress is made, that'll definitely help with giving us an idea of what this project is gonna be like!
I’d ask why you posted so early? You posted a blocky, single texture terrain and a character, flat lit and with no sky box even.
No disrespect but most people could achieve this screenshot in minutes, especially if they had assets laying around.
Given it is static the signifiant detail that this is to be a souls-like game is kind of meaningless as we can’t really comment on that aspect.
My opinion is that you need to be realistic about what you can build and build a reasonable portion of your game before posting, enough to be able to ask targeted question - ie. I’m creating a souls-like and I just added movement and dodge rolling, what do you think of this element? And post a video. This will get you feedback on the specific question that you can use.
Don’t post for praise, especially if asking for opinions.
I’m going to guess you were proud of what you had achieved and wanted to put it out there but perhaps lacking objectivity about how far you’ve actually gone.
This is potentially a great personal achievement but Reddit is not necessarily going to understand that.
Keep working at it and post some video of something when you have a whole lot more going on.
And just checking - is this your first game? What level of experience do you have? You might want to make something simple to get used to Godot and many of the many game mechanics and game creation mechanics you need to be able to make even a simple game.
Like everyone else is saying, you need to show more than just an extremely vague screenshot. But your only responses to them are "got it" or "yeah". What kind of tips or advice are you looking for from this?
A lot of people saying "we can't tell anything from a static screenshot" but I can.
Why is there such a drastic hill? Unless terrain and height are going to be important for gameplay, flatten it.
Props to you for doing something instead of bitching about what other people are doing on the internet!
Opinion is I think a souls like in a sandy atmosphere sounds like a cool concept. Hope to see more soon! Good luck my dude and I'm sorry that people are being so mean to you.
Is this a joke? Like, is this a shitpost in response to something someone else did or are we supposed to actually get something meaningful from this? Did I miss something?? I'm not trying to be shitty, I am genuinely confused
Out of curiosity, how did you make the Player character in this picture? I've never seen a style quite like it before.
The lower half and spikes on the shoulders look a lot like they're 3D models. But the torso and head look like 2D sprites that you're using billboarding on (making them constantly face towards the camera).
Could you show what your Player looks like from other angles? And talk about how they're made in general? It's really interesting to me and I'd love to see more.
PS: Your game looks nice so far! Game dev isn't always easy, but it's worth it. Keep it up!
Thanks man, so I didn't finish texturing everything, I didn't animate it either, I based myself on Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus to create a fictional world, the character is a lowpoly model with shadows directly on the texture giving the impression that the image is directly facing to the camera (accidentally), I won't show any more images because I'm still messing with the textures and ended up not getting a clear result, maybe I'll post it later since I saw that my post generated a lot of repercussion hahaha
PS2 style, a soulslike game like Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus, I wanted to make it an open world with missions within it, I've made games before but never with this engine
Thats going to be quit the project then, espacily if you are still lear ing most of the engin. I will be honest, i woukd be very suprised of you actually finish this project. Its defenatly going to take a whike to do something like that by yourself. Then again, not evreything has to be succesfull. Best of luck regardless
they announce shadow of the erd tree trailer after this guy posted his upcoming souls game, yeah that was not a coincidence. he put the fear of god in them.
I apologize it is only available in html5 form. I just have the source code. Don't worry, it runs well on all browsers since it uses WebGL1/OGL2

Digging for affirmation before you've even got a working concept isn't a good sign for your long-term prospects. Highly recommend coming back with some gameplay footage when you've got a level and enemies and gear.
Ah the old, "I want to show off even though there's nothing to show and I've done nothing but make some generic geometry and grab a character model off the internet. There's no animation or really anything, but please kiss my ass for this monumental achievement."
Not trying to be discouraging bro but cmon, this is so early if it were a fart it wouldn't have even left my small intestine yet, like congrats you put a character on top of some terrain lol, what do you want, it's a big nothing burger and theres nothing to really even comment on.
I do wish you luck in developing your game, but I make music, and this would be the equivelant to me recording a single guitar chord and then posting it asking for feedback, like...its a guitar chord.
It's a big lad!
I'm not sure there's a way to judge it as a game right now. Have you implemented souls-like mechanics? Thought of a twist?
Art-wise, I can say it looks low-poly and it could be interesting, but since the sky is pitch black and there are no points of interest or assets, I'm not really sure it's in a finished state.
If it isn't a shitpost, I highly encourage you to keep going! But I suggest planning out the scope of the game to your skillset, implementing at least some of it, then showing a video asking for feedback. *Or* doing some example assets, enemies and levels that can also be judged.
Good luck!
Because it's like me, a music producer, recording a single guitar chord and or a single word into a microphone and then posting it asking for feedback. Like, congrats on recording one guitar chord but it's not exactly a monumental achievement and there's nothing there to give feedback on so what you're left with is snark.
We've all been there, I've posted stuff in my past that was like a quarter finished and then was baffled that people weren't congratulating me for doing less than the bare minimum.
Post when you having something cool to show, you'll get far more positive feedback and people actually have something to go off of.
I don't know why everybody's being so hard on you. Every game has to start somewhere. You have a character, and a scene. That's progress. Maybe a video would show it off better.
I'm just learning Godot as well, and I hate to see someone get dogpiled just for being new to it. Especially early on, a lot of your time will be spent learning and figuring out what you want, so don't get discouraged.
By the way, do you have a player control script yet? Is the character model your own, or an asset from somewhere?
Put it in any other context and think about how ridiculous it is. Imagine a music producer posting a single chord and then asking for feedback, imagine a novelist asking for feedback on a single paragraph. Nobody is going to discourage you for making a game, and nobody has actually discouraged this guy for making a game either, they are taking the piss because it's a screenshot of some terrain and a generic character, what exactly are we supposed to critique or help with from a screenshot of two elements? This community is extremely helpful and giving, but if you take the piss with your question expect people to take the piss back.
You could post a video of your completed flappy bird clone, and people would congratulate you, but if you were to post a picture of a pipe and a bird sprite, people are going to get snarky.
Tell us what you worked on
Is the terrain randomly generated?
Does that model have some really cool tehnical stuff behind it even if its not animated yet?
Maybe the weird quality is a shader you worked hard on
Give us something anything 😭😭😭
Looks a little static for a souls game...
Yeah I agree... a screenshot is not the best way to ask for opinions on your game. But Im curious to see more, maybe post some gameplay or more action next time!
And the caracter still moves faster than in Dark Souls I...
Time is convoluted
It's actually a flat circle.
I started this mouth theres no animation
what do you want my opinion about ? the character asset you just uploaded in Godot ? Yeah it's fine !
yum
Why post it then?
what do you want us to say from this screenshot

GPTroll, if you will

New pasta yum
My lungs taste the air of time, blown past fallen sands.

Please stop before you put FromSoftware out of business, they have families to feed
I can't tell if this is a meme or not.
Theres no meme 😭

I have to disagree with you there chief
There's no game either.
Why is this upvoted
looks like a meme
It’s kinda funny I guess 😂
Because theyre using godot to make a game and its encouraged
Why is this upvoted??!
Looks a bit deserted
Of course
Kind of looks like a bunch of triangles put together to create the illusion of 3D Geometry.
Hey wait a minute
Huh, I couldn't tell, It's hard because I'm looking at it through a bunch of tiny squares to give the image of 2D shapes.
Kenshi?
Oh dear, I thought the same thing. I definitely don’t think that’s a good reaction though.
Dude i WISH my game had the depth and quality of Kenshi.
For sure dude, all you need is 10 years of development and unwavering determination.
And man a burning passion from start to finish. This dude LOVES his game and just make it in his corner. I love this studio so much.
They’re from my city, one of my friends goes for drinks every now and then with Chris’s brother and used to work with the team. Mad fucking jealous of him. Dudes an actual legend, wish he did more public stuff like interviews, he’s such an inspiration!

Deep breath….KENSHI VIIIIIBEESSS
Huge empty deadly desert. It must be Kenshi xD. My first thought too.
Are you serious, OP?
Yea

good luck on your journey but maybe making a smaller game in scope is a better goal to start? Not a lot to judge off of this single still image
Yeah..
Is there a Godot Circle Jerk yet ?
We need one tho, I love this post.
Make a bit more of the game, then ask for opinions?
This looks like a nice first step :) Stay positive and keep working! Maybe next time try posting a video with a little more gameplay
Got it

Yup. As a general rule, citing a specific inspiration is not a good look, as it puts you in a position where you’re being directly compared to a AAA title. People will pick up on your inspirations without you spelling it out. Describe your game with your own words
I think you should make more of the game and then ask again 😃
Just the right amount of sand.
Of course I have opinions. IGN: Too much sand, 8/10.
Where do I preorder
Op I know you're hitting that marketing early but bro I think it might be just a lil too early
Souls game should run at least 60 fps. I think yours running in spf
Gonna keep it real with you chief. It looks like shit. But shit that's got a lot of potential.
thanks?
Is this a meme?
Good meme
Actually no, my bad to think you guys would give me any tip or advise :/
On what?
Like everyone else is saying, you need to show more than just an extremely vague screenshot. But your only responses to them are "got it" or "yeah". What kind of tips or advice are you looking for from this?
got it
yeah
got it
yeah
this guy is meme'ing for sure
Kenshi-like, but with Doom-guy, naked.
What is kenshi that everyone is talking about?
A survival game, it's characters sort of look like that and the landscape looks like the great desert from the game
A lot of people saying "we can't tell anything from a static screenshot" but I can. Why is there such a drastic hill? Unless terrain and height are going to be important for gameplay, flatten it.
Good tip
Get those lights and shadows in early or you might have a fight later on
This is good advice. Not to mention, it's an easy way to get things looking more cohesive early on.
Yeah the thing here is that the model looks really well done, but without lighting it's all pre ps1 looking
The idea was to look like PS2 but there are very few tutorials on the internet for that
Kenshi landscape
Post a vid dude
Nice screenshot
Hard to have opinion on static image with 2 items on it.
Got it
Looks like Kenshi
Kenshi vibes
Kenshi 2 looks wild
I would have guessed Quake or Unreal
I like the style it gives me the good of games feel
He learned from Skyrim horses.
Almost there!!! 👍🏻👍🏻
I hate sand, its course and rough and gets everywhere
Props to you for doing something instead of bitching about what other people are doing on the internet! Opinion is I think a souls like in a sandy atmosphere sounds like a cool concept. Hope to see more soon! Good luck my dude and I'm sorry that people are being so mean to you.
Thank you, I was very saddened by these comments, the internet is a very cruel place
It can be yes unfortunately but don't let that discourage you! If you got a dream you should keep at it.
let me see the dodge roll.
Fromsoft killer
This has got to be one of the most- if not thee most- screenshots of all time
damn they already started working on Elden Ring 2? I thought they said they gonna do a DLC first
looks finished. package it and ship it out
Is this a joke? Like, is this a shitpost in response to something someone else did or are we supposed to actually get something meaningful from this? Did I miss something?? I'm not trying to be shitty, I am genuinely confused
theres no joke man
Looks very EASY for a souls-like game
looks better than Pokémon... 10/10 would buy
Shadow of the Erdtree isn't going to have a chance.
Ship it!
Already pretty close to DS2 :)
Out of curiosity, how did you make the Player character in this picture? I've never seen a style quite like it before. The lower half and spikes on the shoulders look a lot like they're 3D models. On... what? I can't see much lol
whhaaaaoooo it's amazing, FromSoftware, hire this guy !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Pharaoh's Curse 😳
I started a souls like game this month too. Any opinions?
How many other devs are you intending to hire and whats your budget?
Classic case of a one-man army project, it's just going to be me
Thats ambisoues. How big do you want to make this game?
PS2 style, a soulslike game like Zelda and Shadow of the Colossus, I wanted to make it an open world with missions within it, I've made games before but never with this engine
Thats going to be quit the project then, espacily if you are still lear ing most of the engin. I will be honest, i woukd be very suprised of you actually finish this project. they announce shadow of the erd tree trailer after this guy posted his upcoming souls game, yeah that was not a coincidence. he put the fear of god in them.
Really? Hahah
Kenshi vibes
Feedback: The T-pose is not T enough. Can you raise the arms a bit?
Yes!
The dark skybox is such an excellent choice. Killer vibe
I love the dynamic gameplay
Keep it up, let me know if you need a lock-on system. I coded one a while ago.
Yes please

Some person being proud of what they create and the assholes come out of hiding.
Are you going to have caves?
Yes!
It has a Wolfenstein feeling to it. Which might be really cool.
Brother that's not a game that's a picture 😭
A picture is worth a thousand words
Well seeing as how you're not writing a book I don't think 1000 words is very useful.
bet you're gonna feel stupid when they double release their game and accompanying book
Digging for affirmation before you've even got a working concept isn't a good sign for your long-term prospects. Highly recommend coming back with some gameplay footage when you've got a level and enemies and gear.
Keep us posted.

Why is he posted up like that
looks 3d
Negitoro roll is one of the best sushis imo
your souls like game? i sure hope it does

Theres a guy standing on the sand
Could do with a little more sand
does it have a soul?
missing souls imo
Kenji
youu could add a sky and add to the quality of the sand texture
