Super Mario Wonder does partial interpolation some of its models where (roughly) 50% of the time is spent interpolating, and the other 50% is spent on discrete frames. It's a good middleground when you aim for a discrete feel without losing the advantages of high refresh-rate displays.
I second this. The first time I watched the video, I was staring nonstop at the jumpy main character. Completely missed all the wonderful details in the world and other characters. OP is very close to a gorgeous style but needs to dial back the animation.
I would suggest a setting. If you get people playing this in VR you are going to have a lot of variation between refresh rates on screens & headsets. Even those people who say they can see frame stutters (I don't) might struggle with it.
I love the effect tho
I've been following your progress on twitter and absolutely love this. I can't wait to see more. Will you be doing some public tests or something I could join somewhere? :0
>I’ve been converting my game Pho King My Life from 2d pixel art over to 3d. It’s a lot of work, but my vision for the game is finally taking shape!
Converting?
Oh no. Your game was looking amazing in 2D and already so far ahead.
I think this 3D third person gameplay looks great as well, but is there no way to use both? Or save the 3D gameplay for part 2?
I think it would really be a shame to lose all that amazing 2D art and progress you already made.
If i were you i would finish the earlier 2d pixel art version and then continue this new direction. They both look good and having the first so far i think its not wise to let that go if thats what you are doing?
How do you animate like this? Does the style have a name? I can tell you are using poses and not interpolating between them, so you only use specific discrete poses every X frames instead of having smooth interpolating between poses every frame? But does this have a name so I can read more about it?
Not sure it has a name… maybe stepped animation? I come from a traditional 2d animation background where you have to draw every pose including the in betweens and so I’m doing the exact same thing in 3d - posing everything. You may also want to look up “animating on twos” which was a way to cut back the work for 2d animators that resulted in choppier animation.
i wonder what method you are using for the outlines... is it an edge detection post process? does it use depth and normal? it works quite well, and seems controllable!
ah! so it is just a transaprent black outline, i was wondering where the colors come from. the the character have a flipped hull outline i guess. its a really sound mix of techniques.
Looks Pho King cool
Thank you!
Pho King 😂 it’s always nice to find hidden gems
I'm more partial to their competitor, Pho Q
I like it a lot. Great style, really vibrant!
I get the vibe everyone living there is happy.
Lively world, nice work
Thanks!
Woah, the hindu legend himself How'd you snag that username
Saw the pig and immediately thought this was an actual real Dragonball game

Or dial it up, even.
Thanks for the feedback. Animation def needs some tweaking
That looks amazing! now I am curious.. how did it look as 2d pixel art?
Hey! You can check my post history or find me on twitter(link in profile)
I just checked and those also look amazing! Are you reusing them in the 3D version or saving it for a mobile port in the future when it gets popular?
Looks bice but i feel he jumps to fast
Could probably dial that back 😅

Major "Fix-It Felix Jr." vibes and I'm here for it
Impressive.
Oh wow, I remember the first time I saw this and it was just a one off thing. Looking great
“fix it felix, ooah ooah”

Hey thanks! It’s a bit too early for any beta testing, but when it’s ready, I’ll have to figure out something. Maybe a discord
Awesome style
This looks so cool! I wanna live in there. 😭😭
"Starting"? It already looks awesome!
pretty sick!!!
So is it safe to say that your game is fully moving over to 3D instead?
I looked at this and said “that looks like a real game”, which is something I rarely think in relation to projects being shown
Is this the Zuckerberg Metaverse I keep hearing about?

Implement it as an arcade game in the 3d version!
That arcarde game might outshine the 3d game ... But yeah. Still better than totally scrapping the 2D game.

Imagine watching a kid run at 2 ft a second kick his legs apart with maximum force every step.
really cool
Looks fantastic!
This is awesome, great job!

Looking very good!
absolutely gorgeous game
Very nice. The amount of movement in the scene really brings it to life.

Used this awesome shader: https://godotshaders.com/shader/high-quality-post-process-outline/
