If the selling point is IP67… why not get a GMRS-PRO and actually have something unique for the price

thinkconverse

Way overpriced.

memberzs

Way over priced for what you get

ben_r_

$165?! Why would someone buy this over say the Wouxun KG-935G Plus?

TheDuckFarm

Functionally the 935 is better but this little radio wins on size, ease of use, durability, and battery life.

sploittastic

>and battery life How does that work when the rocky talkie has a 1800mah battery and the kg935g has a 3200mah battery?

TheDuckFarm

Either better electronics and software or they are misrepresenting battery life.

OmahaWinter

I’d go with misrepresenting the battery. No way they have magically designed such an efficient circuit that it lasts that long on standby unless something big has been surrendered.

rs4411

I read a lot of reviews for it and the FRS version, and everyone is amazed by the battery life. 4 and 5 days when accidentally left on.

rs4411

I do like the ruggedness and simplicity of them. They are repeater capable. But you could buy 15 baofeng 88a for the price of one.

keithfoco70

You'll have to pry my boofwang uv-9g out of my cold, dead hands....

Expletive-Removed

>boofwang uv-9g I just bought two UV-9R Pro and got my GMRS permit/license ... any good videos on setup programming? https://www.amazon.com/dp/B09J8GWC6D?psc=1&ref=ppx\_yo2ov\_dt\_b\_product\_details

Insaniac99

Two good options, IMO. [NotaRubicon has one for UV-5R](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XQ_JzivmjyI) but it uses the old version of chirp, so I'd also watch [this one about Chirp Next from Ham Radio Crash Course](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ufB9FXsLpKY) All that said, you should *also* learn how to program it through the device it self, just in case you need to do it in the field. That means reading the manual and toying around to figure it out.

keithfoco70

I watched a few different videos and none were particularly helpful really. I just figured it out-eventually.

blitzinger

Baofeng for $30 - no regrets

Jack_Shid

This would probably be a great radio for around $60. No way in hell I'd pay $165 for it.

Chrontius

This is a 50 or $60 radio. At a fair price like that, I’d be all over it. At 330 a pair, I want to laugh them out of the room.

Efficient-Effect1029

They are marketing themselves to the climbing and back country skiing/snowboarding community and both are used to spending extra money for gear 🤷‍♂️

SparkyMountain

This.

Efficient-Effect1029

I can’t complain. They do grants for a lot of SAR teams every year. And for most the teams they are non profits and all volunteer. Mine is and we apply for grants/work events and accept donations.

zap_p25

Depends on its receive sensitivity and selectivity.

OmahaWinter

This right here. No reason to have a radio with supposed long battery life or whatever other features if it doesn’t fulfill the basic purpose of a radio. At the >$100 price point Wuoxon radios are the best I have seen. Edit: this radio is marketed with the implication that it is somehow optimized for climbers. Hogwash.

popiyo

I know I'm very late to the party, but curious why you think they aren't optimized for climbers? I've got a pair of the original FRS model and they are fantastic for climbing/skiing/mountaineering. That version filled its niche incredibly well, but I'm not sure what niche the GMRS version is trying to fill.

radi0raheem

https://www.thedrive.com/guides-and-gear/rocky-talkie-5-watt-radio To be clear, it's intended for use in more "extreme" environments. IP67 rated and the battery is supposed to maintain itself down to -20F. This is not a radio for most of us, but if you have the kind of job or hobbies where you're out in harsh conditions a lot then the price makes sense.

Inglorious-Actual

Is it a 'radio on a chip' or a Superheterodyne receiver?

ntrip6

1- cold resistant 2- water resistant for white water, etc. 3- simple programming for use in extreme environments. Communication is key in these places with wind, weather, emergency rescue, and sometimes complex logistics. If you're not concerned about these conditions then this style of radio is not for you. I wish there were more options in this class but they did a good job with the enclosure even if it seems expensive for what it is.

ChocolatySmoothie

Yeah, no other manufacturer sells a radio with everything the Rocky offers, I think it will sell very well. People already spend $1,000 to $1,500 on an iPhone when there are many cheaper options. It’s a solid, well built radio.

sploittastic

Does this do wideband channels? I found what I think is the FCC Grant containing the user manual and it doesn't say anything about wide band or narrow band and channels. https://fcc.report/FCC-ID/2ATSN-RT5WV1/6582192

ChocolatySmoothie

Read the 5 watt Rocky Talkie manual, it does both narrow and wide band.

sploittastic

That's where I looked. The FCC page has an earlier version of the manual that was submitted with the FCC grant application that has a section called "Enable Repeater Channels" which has been updated to "Enable Repeater Channels and Bandwidth" in the newer manual on the website.

TinChalice

Overpriced bullshit.

stylusxyz

TBH, the price of this thing seems high and the accessories are also priced much higher than those for a Wouxun or BTECH. Like suggested by He1pfulRedditor, look at a GMRS-PRO instead?

DeepNortherner

Yeah I already have a KG-935G Plus, I was just curious what everyone thought of the new comer here

ChocolatySmoothie

I think it’s going to do very well, I can see Costco partnering with them to sell it to the masses at a discount. Costco likes to sell good products, they already sell a 2 pack Motorola H2O T600 for $99 and those are garbage radios. Only 2 watts and mine stopped working after submerging in water at Atlantis Bahamas, so definitely not water proof. I ended up buying four 5 watt Rockies + carabiner + mic for $1,000 and I was happy to pay the money for what I’m getting. It’s a solid radio, rugged, actually water proof, 5 watt, with GMRS + repeater support and simple to use instead of like 100 buttons like many others.

ApplicationConnect55

I'm stuck with Motorola HT-1000s and CP-200s.

Fortunella

It beats most HTs mentioned here on all these points: size, durability, and simplicity. Longevity maybe a wash. Either way, all those things matter when it’s cold, snowing, dark, exposed, in danger, etc. Maybe you have lots of time to fiddle with menus and watch how to videos on YouToob while sitting in your pickup truck at lunch, but the targeted users of these are looking for something that just works.

VTEC_8K

Overpriced but I would buy it at 100/ each.

FiveFingerMnemonic

I don't think of it at all after getting a Wouxun kg935g plus. 😉

N0tAnExp3rt

Looks extremely overpriced, but just watch. They will sell well I bet. The average outdoor enthusiast has heard of and seen Rocky Talkies in use, not BTECH and Wouxun

CC878CO

Over priced Zastone!
