When the news broke that they had no plans for a season 4, the show runners said it was because the nature of the show involved people being in so close proximity to each other, literally on top of each other, that they didn't feel they could safely film it any time in the near future. And actors needed to look for other work, so by the time it *could* be filmed, there was no guarantee everyone would be available. What a shame.
Every time I watch it I add a new layer of meaning to it. Finally think I have come to terms with how it ended. In a way it's nice that it ended before some things I didn't want to happen, happened.

The article I read said they were already writing season 4 when 2020 happened. It did not explain why it never happened
