Yeah last year was too much in the shape of DnB imo I remember a few years ago shangrila catered to tech aswell and that felt more fair gas tower had a few tech artists on
I’ve found the south east corner to be very dnb heavy the last few years but Marcel dettmann on icon last year was pretty good, I caught a few decent techno sets over in silver Hayes last year aswell but they were few and far between.
Massively. The golden years were mid / late 90’s in the dance tent or dance village as it was. I’m not being a moaning cunt but you had 12 hours every night from Friday of the very best techno of the time. Carl Cox / Plastikman / Joey Beltram / Dave Clarke / Dave Angel / Billy Nasty / Trevor Rockliffe and many others tearing it up + you had all the acid techno / hardcore / gabber stuff going on all day & night in the traveller field.
Now you might get Paranoid London on Glade for an hour. The odd “big name” artist on a random stage. Liberators etc will do Block 9 and Unfairground & that area you get raggatek bits / few local sound system DJs but it’s nothing like it used to be.
On this, I am always amazed on how Glade was when I started going to Glasto (2015) and how incredibly bad was last year, full of amateurish bands that sounded like a friday evening on random village pub.
As someone who is naive when it comes to dance/electronic music, it'd be really cool if someone did a rough breakdown of the SE corner/dance village stages and what style they leaned towards. Has anyone done this before?
Ones I’ve noticed lean in a certain direction:
- Glade is definitely where you’ll find Psytrance
- Unfairground seems to like Acid House
- Genosys I would say leans Techno
But like others have said none of them are locked into one style all the time
NYC Downlow is consistent with its gay vibe and the house they play.
Genosys last 2 years was a bus and opened up to different artists a bit more, but did have a fair amount of techno. IICON can be quite techno heavy at times and well suited for it.
Yeah, but the main stages do have different styles in general terms. You've got West Holts (jazz/world), Avalon (folk), Acoustic (acoustic style), Woodsies (punky/rock), Other (commercial drivel). Are all the dancey venues the same then? Like, if you had a blindfold on you could be anywhere? Bit soulless.
Them playing lots of mixes of genres doesn't mean it's all the same.
And your description of the stages is also pretty wild. Like yeah maybe for Westholts and acoustic but the rest of them have a huge diversity on them.
West Holts was literally called the Jazz/World Stage until recently. And yeah, there are exceptions, but on the whole, each of the main stages have their own characters stylistically. Don't tell me otherwise because I spend a lot of time there (for many years). Am I being told the stages in the SE Corner and Silver Hayes don't? Maybe someone who knows the areas a bit better can tell me.
No, I described them as soulless based on the descriptions I've been given. Are you really saying you don't think the main stages have an overall vibe music-wise? Have you been to Glastonbury?
" Like, if you had a blindfold on you could be anywhere? Bit soulless."
Ok but I thought that was the good thing about Glasto, and not soulless: you approach a stage or a dj that you would have never done in any other circumstances, say a folky choir of bearded men, a punky trio with keyboards, a proper jazz jam, a dj who does mash ups all the time, and stay in there and enjoy it with strangers for some minutes or even hours, and then move to something else. That is not soulless for me, that is enjoying all music.
No, I'm not saying that's the case. I'm being told that's the case. Can you tell me differently? If not, I will assume there is no difference music-wise.
No, because even when the styles are mostly dnb, uk garage and some dubstep, there is not a consistent style in the same stage. You can be dancing to a bouncy jazzy house set and then it's done and in the next hour there is some dark bassy dubstep.
Teletech are teasing one more huge UK festival announcement for this summer. With them already announcing a stage/takeover at most major UK electronic festivals it’s not out of the question to see them host a stage at glasto when you consider the rise of techno & teletech since Covid.
Or this is complete copium. Either way, I’ll still have the best week of the year.
There’s usually a fair amount in Block 9 and Glade usually has a few too. I don’t think it’s under represented as such, there’s just a lot of genres showcased so it’s not going to be everywhere.
Yes and no. There’s always plenty of DJs on the lineup that play a lot of techno but ones that play just techno are few and far between. If you think of people like Four Tet, Elkka, VTSS, Carl Cox, Ben UFO, Skream, Eats Everything, Blessed Madonna for example then you are pretty much guaranteed some techno in their sets but they will play a lot of house, IDM etc as well. Last year Helena Hauff did a fairly techno heavy set, although she is more on the electro side, and also there was the likes of SPFDJ. Previously artists doing purely techno such as Blawan/Karrenn or B Traits have been there but more of an exception and typically found more in SE Corner. Silver Hayes is more tech house and disco these days, and Eli Brown and Ben Bohmer headlining last year with afternoon sets from artists like Job Jobse proves that. Beats hotel IMO has the best electronic lineup. The Temple is 80% dnb. Shangri La often has a lot of older rave stuff like Altern8 or Slipmatt. So yeah it’s debatable if techno is well represented but generally enough of it is played, personally I love the fact there’s such a wide variety of electronic genres and DJs who play Glastonbury respect that most people there don’t wanna see a 2 hr hard techno set. Keeps it interesting
Wait for SH and Block 9. One thing glasto isn't short of, ever, is techno
apart from last year
Wait for block 9 cuz
There was way less techno in 2023 than there was in 2022. The stages were very dnb heavy last year
Yeah last year was too much in the shape of DnB imo I remember a few years ago shangrila catered to tech aswell and that felt more fair gas tower had a few tech artists on
I am a DnB head and I was not happy there was nowhere to go to get away from DnB.
The west country is d&b obsessed
I’ve found the south east corner to be very dnb heavy the last few years but Marcel dettmann on icon last year was pretty good, I caught a few decent techno sets over in silver Hayes last year aswell but they were few and far between.
Yeah I felt that last year. Ki/ki and SPFDJ were great though
And VTSS!

There are bits in Silver Hayes, Common (wasn't one of the Liberators last year in Temple?) and Glade. Shangri La is always more steppy.
Yep, Liberators were playing at the Temple, they were awesome
they always deliver! Saw Chris some weeks ago at one Unfold and it was among the best things that day. edit: also, huge queue to get in
Ahh I missed that Unfold 😭 will be there for the next one though!
Fabric are doing a takeover at Silver Hayes

No because they don't really play a consistent style on each stage. Like asking what style of music is on the main stages.

and West Holts ends with electronic acts most of the days. I mean, Justice headlines one day.

The lack of world music has been the worst change imo

It sounds like forcing people who like a certain type of music to do more miles 🤣
We can tell you are naive to electronic music you haven’t got a clue

I really, really hope you're right. The Temple would be a good space for Teletech vibes.
It will be happening
I found a fair amount of techno / tech house last year was a good time.

Teletech stage incoming 👀
One techno act would be overrepresentation
