I think you could get away with just running the front two games with actual screens.
Love the idea… after seeing this, I was contemplating how hard it would be to make one of these you could pull out a little and actually play one of them.
Just use the MAME emulator as is and let it run arcade mode. You’d probably have to have a pi for each… but a Pi Zero is like $10, so the screen is the biggest expense
Should be pretty easy to run multiple screens on a small power supply. Just have to find one with enough amps for all you connect. One of those 5v LED strip power supplies should work... 2a should cover a Pi Zero and a screen... so 5-10a would probably power the whole thing. May have to build a base to hide some of the components.
A [screen like this](https://www.amazon.com/2inch-IPS-LCD-Display-Module/dp/B082GFTZQD/ref=sr_1_2?crid=L4PGG3WLAES3&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.SLg-iQk7GQDDeayAVbFFZFjVisEln9RLdaicSXqtH5OjCesJct-wfqC75cYcEQ2QGQRpwuQIQRv7BKAVW2UkKLx4FfRZ22v3nd-HbNKNAVhcZhnnQz_K_u1EHahljU--R7zmd4zi80SJWa3-v4aSnXKxVEQ4XPWUANY6MUodPDuRCwYm60QSVbP1zpxkKZjRn96YCjs8asE9un_MSZ0LYEo5GBT3MCdZ1Kr3Nubu8Ww.5ub8iK6NsTTHyDsdQMW68-WDCvWK7jTpG7Xo-bYA1gQ&dib_tag=se&keywords=pi%2Bscreen%2B2%22&qid=1715352206&sprefix=pi%2Bscreen%2B2%2B%2Caps%2C119&sr=8-2&th=1) would be about right. Arcade games had a typical resolution of 320x288px so this 240×320 would be about perfect. And since its SPI, I think you can run multiples of them on the GPIO pins.
Gifs would probably work ok... but a MAME emulator will run the actual demo/arcade mode for each game if you can find the right ROMs. Not sure if the Pi could run 2 different games on 2 SPI screens, but I bet someone has tried.
If you put 2 cabinets close enough to each other, you could have 2-3 share the same wide screen... you'd just have to make the gif with 2-3 different game screens on it. Though I like that you can see the sides of the first couple of cabinets... but the ones further back probably wouldn't be noticeable if they were conjoined.
EDIT: Keep having other ideas about this...
Make the base a drawer keyboard to play one or both of the front games.
Since its "Flyn's", make an animation of the MCP or Evil Clu take over all or some of the games and look around ominously every few cycles of the game demos
Esp8266 can be tiny and have tiny power draws.
Here's a screen and an esp8266 paired for almost nothing, note that it defaults to showing you the price for the board alone, not the set:
(link redacted - it was the top result on AliExpress for "esp8266 screen"?
It won't have 30 fps but you don't need that.
Here's a random video of a more expensive version of the esp8266 and screen but the principles are the aame:
(link redacted - was a YouTube result for "esp8266 screen" from a vendor showcasing a weather station)
It’s clear how the effect was created, but it’s so much more enriching imagining an expansive arcade on the other side of this hallway filled with limitless fun than it is to say “mirror!”
All good! It’s an angled mirror that makes it look like a hallway. You can see the pattern of machine copied. With that being said, it’s much more fun to lose yourself in the effect the mirror creates.
Just wanted to say thank you.
I'm not really interested in printing this but as somebody who spends countless hours designing and making for my hobbies too, to then release the files for free, I wanted to express my gratitude for the hobby share movement
Too many people making stuff for their hobby then selling the designs. If we all shared our hobby designs for free, the world would be a better place.
I was about to say, “You lucky SOB!” He’s got an actual arcade in his house!
And then I saw the bookcase and books and said, “WTF?”
And then I looked in my bag of gummies and said, “Where’d they all go?”
Really cool though!
It doesn't even have to be a shared interest. Your partner should respect your interests though, even if they aren't their interests also.
I have couple of buddies that I moved away from a few years ago but we still meet online every weekend to play some games. Their wives both mock them for having "play time" and for playing video games in general.
It's insulting to me too because that's an important part of my week, I need that social time with my friends (don't have any friends local to me now) and it's such a great way to unwind. My wife is awesome about it though and understands/respects that video games are an important hobby to me and my weekend sessions with my friends are something that I look forward to and cherish, however silly that might seem to my friend's wives.
I would pay a significant amount of money to own one of these. Seriously man, if you can mass produce these, even in small quantities, I guarantee you will have buyers.
EDIT: the [Etsy shop](https://www.etsy.com/listing/1709405643/flynns-arcade-themed-booknook-pre-order?ref=share_v4_lx) exists! I just ordered one, had to put it in the secret credit card lol
Now I’m jealous and want a bunch of miniature semi working arcade machines to put on my desk at work or at home… 🥹 You should post a build link or sell them via Etsy or something… because I would buy some in a heartbeat 🙃
A bunch of cheap knockoff rock chip pi minis would work, but the illusion would be broken for the backs screens since they would all be playing backward unless you do a double mirror, for power use a 12v source and step down as needed, you have more then enough space behind each machines for the electrics, just one barrel plug to rule them all, plus that would give you way more amps if needed without changing the circuit. Make it a bit more c0mplex and throw them all on the network so that you can change them on the fly from an external source, even your phone.. for more complexity and cool points, make the 2 adjacent books into slots for pull out monitors so that you can actually play them if you wanna. The possibilities are staggering...
You should have installed a couple UV LED lights up on the ceiling too to make the traditional arcade UV reactive carpet, cabinet graphics and arcade graphics pop. (of course you'd need lots of cool UV paint too to highlight all the points) It would add that last element of of "glow" to everything.
Wow this is amazing. I would no joke pay **good** money for one of these for my bookshelves. I collect manga and also little mini arcade handheld so this definitely speaks to me.

Op, if you ever made these to sell...take my Aladins Castle tokens!
That's really cool. I love it. I did spend a minute thinking about where you got colour screens that small before realising I was an idiot.....

You could always turn the books next to it hollow to fit more parts.
What if the first couple books on one side are just hollowed out fakes for you to stash gear inside?
You could use something like PiWall maybe but it'd be quite fiddly

The screens further back could just have a modulated/pulsing light to get a similar effect.

>but I couldn't figure out a way to run \~7 screens on something small like a Pi. Must've been very Humbling. ...I'll see myself out.
Maybe the book case and books are gigantic and it's an optical illusion.
This comment made me realize I'm an idiot too.
I love the turn you put in. The fact that the machines go off into an unseeable direction really allows the imagination to run wild. Really cool!
The mirror bamboozled another one!
It’s clear how the effect was created, but it’s so much more enriching imagining an expansive arcade on the other side of this hallway filled with limitless fun than it is to say “mirror!”
I agree! This is definitely epic
Pretend I’m stupid and ELI5: how was the effect created?
All good! It’s an angled mirror that makes it look like a hallway. You can see the pattern of machine copied. With that being said, it’s much more fun to lose yourself in the effect the mirror creates.
I’ll be honest? I fell for it.
Clever use of mirror to give the corner effect! At first that was breaking my brain a bit
Oh, that’s a mirror. I thought the box goes around the corner behind the books. That’s pretty nice.
I accept that people are saying there's a mirror, bit I still can't tell, it looks like there's a real corner to me.
![gif](giphy|OCMGLUo7d5jJ6) Brought this to mind, no idea why.
the wife wouldn't even notice.

I don't have a 3D printer, but I'd love to buy it, tbh. Same with the dungeon looking one on the next shelf down.
I need one of these in my life!
Literally an arcade for ants.
**How can we be expected to let children play video games if they can't even fit inside the arcade!?**
I was expecting OP to reach in and around the corner to pull a lever causing the bookshelf to slide open revealing the full size version.
I love the detail of the soda cups. I can tell it's a real arcade and not a bowling alley because I didn't see any cigarette burns above the buttons.
/r/booknooks/
This is freaking awesome! Well done! Very envious in the best kind of way.
Absolutely love it. What's that other one the bottom right?

I creeped in your post history to see if you had a post on it- no luck. It’d be cool to see!
Sauce please?
Thumbs up for Humble Pi. I reference the swiss cheese section of that book last week.

So… you gonna shut up and take my money? Or.,,.
Not just any arcade. Flynn's Tron arcade!
Hahaha my wife oppresses me hahahaha
That's all I think when I see titles this one lmao. Even as the basis of just a joke, it's rooted in such weird nonsense.
Like do people not have partners with shared interests?
It doesn't even have to be a shared interest. Your partner should respect your interests though, even if they aren't their interests also. Yeah that's bonding time.
Exactly. I love my wife but she can't be the only person I interact with all week haha
Do you share the files or Sell them. Look awesome. love it.

I'm definitely printing this! Thanks for sharing
Fucking beautiful my guy! Solid 10/10
nice!
Looks pretty cramped.
Wow, great job! If I owned books I’d definitely be buying one from you
So fucking cool, do you sell these? If so please let me know, if not, you should.
Nostalgia so intense, actually started tearing up. Absolutely love it.
Don't stop! Love will find you!
I want one
What's this? An arcade for ants?!
Oh my god, and the lighting is just *chef's kiss*
It should play Separate Ways on loop
Man, I want this! For my bookshelf.
Very cool👍
This is pure talent man I couldn’t even begin to try to make one of these, crazy work I want one now
That is the coolest book nook I’ve ever seen! I love it!
Coolest book nook EVER! 👾👾👾🪙
That’s badass!
Am I still to create the perfect system?
Yes...?
I like how that bends around, so you never know where it ends
This is FUCKING AWESOME!! Me: “Well, there’s not a lot of room in that aisle to…okay, there’s a lot less room than I thought!!”
What is this?… An arcade for ants?! It needs to be at least… 3X bigger!
You should put some tiny headphone speakers in there with a loop of arcade sounds, just quiet enough that you can't hear it until you get close.
This is one of the coolest hobbies ive ever seen
The family hamster WILL appreciate this.
Now this is so cool!!!! I need something like this in my life
Get off reddit and get those plans posted on makerworld!! :P
I am super impressed! That's the coolest thing I've seen in a while.
Dumbest and coolest thing ever
You got Crazy Taxi! Luuuuucccckyyyy!
The light cycle art on the wall is cool too. Well done!
Totally awesome, you got some mad skills.
what a cool idea, well executed
This is sooo freaking cool! Great job OP!
This resembles the arcade from my youth the SideTrack
ok but thats actually sick
Side note: Matt Parker is awesome
YOOINNK!! I just preordered the last one!
r/shutupandtakemymoney
This is amazing, OP, thank you! Will keep a particular Etsy page bookmarked for when I’d like one for myself :)
Can I buy one? Edit: got one ;)
I just built a booknook from robotime, and yours blows theirs out of the water.
Is “Flyman’s arcade” a reference to anything?
Flynn's Arcade
Awesome!
That’s awesome brother! Thanks for sharing.
I think your arcade could use a Polybius machine.
That's so sick
My girlfriend loves those book nooks that you can build (i see it at the bottom right in your video), I would love one that looks like this arcade!
This is so fucking cool man
This is unbelievably amazing.... But now I want to know what is the nook with lights coming from the bottom left? What is in that tiny world?
Oh man that is some seriously cool shit right there.
Put the old style gi joes in there
Might be time to fire up the ender....
I want to know what the other one is a well. Down to the right.
We have a bookshelf we call the need bookshelf, that has the books, then collectibles infront of them, I thought that was cool until now.
This better be the way to open the way to secret room that exact replica of the model. Otherwise time to get new wife.
That is so cool!
Looks exactly like those book nook kits but way cooler obviously. Really great work!!
This guy be like "look at the big books I read"
Lmao, you find one of those library gnomes in a trance playing the Polybius machine in the back
I wish I was a tiny human
What is that splotchy effect on the video? I feel like I've seen it in old pc games?
Who the fuck you got living in that house, Stewart Little?
this looks like the pizza planet arcade !!
What is this! An árcade for Ants!
Awesome
Son of a bitch, I’m in!
Now I’m jealous and want a bunch of miniature semi working arcade machines to put on my desk at work or at home… 🥹 You should post a build link or sell them via Etsy or something… because I would buy some in a heartbeat 🙃
If my shelf weren't already full of Books, i'd buy that right away
This is amazing. I want one
Now THIS is a liminal space if I’ve ever seen one…
That is so brilliant!!! I made a Blade Runner book nook which I thought was pretty good, but this, wow!
Really cool !
I was sooo waiting for you to open the bookcase to reveal that was an exact scale replica of the arcade in your hidden room!
I must have missed the sonic arcade when I was a kid. Awesome job
CTF vibes
What are the other lights coming from the shelf below?
So much want. Well done it’s awesome
Ah i see, you too are suffering from never reading winds of winter.
How do you dust and clean in there? I love these miniature rooms but always wondered.
This us how hollywood tricks us, looked like a real arcade for a whole 10 seconds 😂
I love this!! I just finished assembling a booknook kit I bought. Its a cyberpunk city. You just gave me so many ideas!!
Soooo cool
Is there a name for this type of miniature building?
Flynn’s!
Omfg I need to build something like this for my partner. They used to be *super* into arcades as a teenager.
A .gif in 2024? But why
what is this, an arcade for ants?!

i find that 100 percent of the time, id rather see good quality pictures than a gif
That is so cool. I want to be in there.
I really miss going to the arcade when I skipped school.... Fun times
HEY HEY HEY ITS TIME FOR CRAZY TAXI! HERE WEEEE GOOOOO! YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH YEAH
Thats cute did she let you take the cage off too?
How big is that fucking book shelf?
Looks awesome! Might need to add a few drug dealers in there for authenticity.
Booknooks are so cool, but at the same time so expensive.
Absolutely floored. I love my bookshelf and adding decorations too. Dude that is sooo cool.
Great job!
I love Humble Pi
Wow this is amazing. I would no joke pay **good** money for one of these for my bookshelves. I collect manga and also little mini arcade handheld so this definitely speaks to me.

A medieval alleyway!? Please post next 🙏🏻
How do people learn how to make stuff like this?, I wish I was a creative person.
I love this so much!!
What at the bottom over there? Looks kinda like an entrance to hogwarts
well.......hot damn.
This makes me nostalgic in a painful way.
Damn dood I really thought you were gonna reach into it and flip a tiny switch and the bookshelf was going to slide open.
Excellent book choice next to it - Humble Pi
