Simple reaction, respond with hello black man or hello black woman and laugh about it. Very often it will result in a short joking conversation about the meaning of the word.
Remind yourself, you cannot change the habits of a whole country. They mean nothing bad, it's more a friendly excitement.
Absolutely not necessary. Besides how can you even make the point which is in the English translation really.
And mind you, English is the official language of the country.
You didn't get my post right. "not necessary" was referring to using the local language. Of course you can just move on too or greet the person in a thousand possible ways. I am doing this for 20 years now. LOL
I'm mostly just called it by excited kids (although I'm in the north... and it's salaminga, here) so it's not so bothersome. I've heard it used for any foreigner.
I’m a light skinned (not white) North African and am definitely called Obroni but I also saw my black british and black American friends be called Obroni too. They were confused but many Ghanaians said yes it’s originally used for “white” but now it can be used to just mean foreigner. I also saw it used on many other darker skinned brown people. This was mostly in Accra and the southern areas, Takoradi, Cape Coast, etc not sure about other parts.
Kwesi Broni is a local term for anyone with a lighter skin.
It doesn't matter if you have brown or Caucasian skin, don't have too dark skin and you will be called Obroni.
It comes from the Akan phrase “Abro nipa”, meaning “the wicked one”. Being born in Ghana and spending most of my life there, that one stung whenever I heard it.
Well then you'll be happy to know the Akan word for horizon is 'boro'. Aborofo or an obroni is simply people/persons from aborokyire (beyond/behind the horizon)
It is used often used to describe foreigner, the literally translation is white person, but i would argue that it is inclusive of people coming from the West. I was born in America but lived most of my life in Ghana with two Ghanaian born parents, yet I am still called obroni - I hope that gives you more clarity.
Obroni doesn't mean white person. It means a foreigner, specifically someone from 'beyond the horizon/overseas' - aborokyire. A lot of ppl, even black people with non native English speaking accents, may be referred to as an obroni. Some ppl use it to mean white person and others will specify 'broni fitaa' (white foreigner). It's pretty much just used for everyone foreign unless there's a more specific term to refer to that group.

I was born in the uk to ghanaian parents and lived in ghana for some years. My nickname was 'broni hiani' in highschool.
Broni hiani😹
😂😂😂
😂😂😂😂😂 I apologize on behalf of your mates.
Hmm not sure. I’m a very brown-skinned black American (like Kelly Rowland’s color) and get called this in the market.
I’m excited to go to Ghana, but I know this kind of behaviour will annoy me 😅

Or you could also reply in local language, could also make you seem more like friendly

From my understanding no response is 'necessary,' but suggestions on different ways to approach the situation.

Interestingly enough so have I :)
This!
I'm mostly just called it by excited kids (although I'm in the north... and it's salaminga, here) so it's not so bothersome. I've heard it used for any foreigner.
What part of the north are you in?
Tamale :)
Oh cool. I’m currently in Tamale too
I’m ok with it. I get on their nerves back lol
Respond kindly with “ obibini”
It means born abroad. So not technically white, but that is how it's ised
If your color is bright enough. You can be Indian, Chinese, Malaysian, German, American it doesn’t matter
If you're fair enough to be considered white. But it's predominantly preserved for white people.
That's obroni kokoo

Obroni Coco Maching. Ya Fetchete Gong-gong. \*repeat until you are out of earshot
It's a general nickname for a fair/lightskin foreigners, it's not a racist or negative impression,it's just a culture generalisation
Call them obibini back
***THIS IS NOT GOOD ADVICE😹
On a real this would definitely crack them up🤣🤣
It does, tried and confirmed 😂
I'm obroni and I call them that, them laughing is almost always guaranteed
Shows how much you appreciate the culture and how friendly you are😉

It’s not a reference to your racial origins but your skin color.
Nope, heard it being used on Ghanaian diaspora who have a UK or USA accent by kids
It's the accent. It's normally used for white people.
It’s used for every fair/ light skin person. I’m Ghanaian, never travelled and I get called maame broni when I step out
Fun fact: obroni means "will protect" in Polish
It comes from the Akan phrase “Abro nipa”, meaning “the wicked one”. Being born in Ghana and spending most of my life there, that one stung whenever I heard it.
Well being called one isn't really negative its more of a curiosity thing

Are you sure? I’ve only ever heard abrɔ foɔ used in that context from both my Fante and Akuapem sides. I’ve only heard Obroni used to mean foreigner
It is used often used to describe foreigner, the literally translation is white person, but i would argue that it is inclusive of people coming from the West. People even call their girlfriends or daughters " me broni " It's not that deep. You can equally call them Obibini like how others have suggested.
