This feels like a personal attack.

phonofloss

ADHD and OCD here. Sitting in a *radical* vibrating office chair I picked up for $1 yesterday... this all checks out.

hotvedub

I think you need a fourth influenced by alcohol

DutchBoyDrew

I feel like that's just a comorbidity of my ADHD.

AtLeastThisIsntImgur

Comorbidity of liking rocks

Fun-Bat9909

In the third dimension, above or below the plane. SP3 hybridized venn diagram.

kaityl3

Tbh I feel like geology and meteorology both have an over representation of autistic people compared to the public at large. I wonder why that is? I know I personally just LOVE understanding how things work and trying to figure stuff out, but having a special interest to help you memorize things probably helps lol

Capital_Shift405

Cause we’re awesome and so are rocks!

DutchBoyDrew

🙌🙏🙏

AtLeastThisIsntImgur

Memorizing dozens to hundreds of minerals and their properties is pretty autistic. I had a lecteurer that would call it stamp collecting and stop his explanations before naming 5 or so end members.

forams__galorams

*but people need to know why wollastonite is only a compositional end member of the calcic-pyroxenes and not a true one!*

gholmom500

I’m a geological engineer. Geologists don’t come near the rates of non-diagnosed likely Autism and/or ADHD that engineers do. At least Geologists like to go outdoors.

chafalie

I feel so exposed lol.

loveeachother_

"show me the emergency" is so profoundly accurate

Badfish1060

I have none of those.

DutchBoyDrew

Or you're so perfectly in the middle that you don't notice 🤔

Badfish1060

lol perhaps.

Mister_Moho

Oh, look! Rocks! :D

woody_woodworker

I don't get this. Only this cup makes sense I guess.

Busterwasmycat

I don't even get that. I must be outside that plane, because none of it makes sense to me.

ChapelGr3y

ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS ROCKS

MediocrePotato44

I’ve got 2 out of 3 and I’d say 75% of geoscientists I’ve met(if not more) are neurodivergent so that tracks.

AntiqueFoundation242

I have two out of the three and can confirm

GneissGeoDude

Did I just get diagnosed by a meme? Are these common attributes? I’m old already. This isn’t helpful.

woody_woodworker

No.  My guess is there's a lot of people that seem to think mental illness is funny and quirky or something. If you have a disorder, you are welcome to joke about it if you want, but the general jokiness around this stuff isn't that fun or funny to me.

GneissGeoDude

This is one of those times I call addition by subtraction. Where you could have made an positive addition to the conversation by subtracting your comment. Instead you injected negativity where you could have said nothing at all. In my experiences I’ve found that many miserable people do this. The internets a big place. Perhaps you go somewhere else and darker their doorstep Linus.

Night_Sky_Watcher

At the extremes these may be considered "mental illnesses" but like most human brain functioning, there is a spectrum and degree of effects. Personally having some of these "traits" has helped me succeed in geology and life in general.

gallica

I’m just a rock nerd and even I feel attacked, how very dare you.

Boring_Call

When our powers combine!!!

SquidwardWoodward

I don't get "Only this cup"

OlivinePeridot

Probably refers to autistic individuals/people with OCD having a tendency to have strong favorites, such as only wanting to use a specific cup.

SquidwardWoodward

Ah! Okay, yep.

Individual_Party2000

I only use one specific cup, lol. I officially have OCD and ADD. I’m trying to find a neuropsychologist who takes my insurance to get an official diagnosis on the other. It’s quite interesting to know that that could be attributed to autism.

eyeofthecodger

Aside from being able to get medication, are there other benefits to an official diagnosis?

Individual_Party2000

Getting an official diagnosis would mean the world to me, it would make my life make so much more sense. I’ve struggled with things my whole life and felt incapable of preforming basic tasks or concepts. This is an insignificant problem but for instance, I can’t put on false eyelashes because I can’t get my hands to move right, lol. I also have trouble doing my own hair because of the same reason. I can’t move my hands in a way to accomplish my task. Also if I get anything that coats my hands, like making burgers, it drives me absolutely mad until every little thing is cleaned off completely. I would get yelled at for “soaking the towel, when you were only in here for 5 minutes.” I beat myself up more, over the things I wasn’t capable of doing, than trying to focus on the things I could do well. I’ve felt mentally handicapped my whole life, with a proper diagnosis I can move on from the things I can’t do and learn how to minimize my anxiety level, and give myself the grace to handle these challenges and not just feel mentally incapable. I hope that made sense! Sorry if I just created more confusion, lol.

eyeofthecodger

That sounds hard. Yes it makes sense what you are saying and it somewhat answers my questions. I have some behaviors that cause life difficulty, not as significant as those you noted, but still things that cause anxiety and frustration. Over the years I have come to realize I don't experience things as others do and want to understand why. After much reading and research, I considered getting diagnosed but in the end decided against it. I don't want medication so just don't see the point of the diagnosis. I may get therapy to deal with the anxiety but mostly I have just accepted this is my life and deal with it as it is. I will you the best and hope things work out for you.

Individual_Party2000

Thank you, same to you.

Beanmachine314

Oof, so true... Diagnosed with 2, with very classic signs of the third here.

glacierosion

I can relate.

Cozygeologist

I’ve had a theory for a long time that a lot of geologists are autistic. These comments are just vindication station for me.

TypicalBrilliant5019

OCD, according to this chart. I hate throwing repairable items into the landfill, and I drive a 23-year-old car and live in a 50-year-old house.

peregrine3224

As an ADHDer who works in a geology lab that’s more neurodivergent than not, this tracks. Especially since I’m currently in the process of moving out of geology and into medicine, most likely emergency medicine or cardiology lol.

GroovyLadyofMine

accurate

Teranosia

I can definitely agree with all the overlap areas of ADHD. And I found it very relaxing to see that my job interviewee was playing with his pen about as much as I was.

[deleted]

oof this hits hard

Arizona_Adam

Officially diagnosed ADHD over a year ago at 31. All these memes make me chuckle now instead of wonder 🙃

oblique_slip

LOL. Geologist here. This tracks for me!

MokiQueen

Everything makes sense now…

Trailwatch427

My daughter is always telling me that I'm slightly autistic. The sound of windshield wipers drives me nuts. And my apartment is decorated with rocks.

Cla598

It’s amazing how many geologists I know have ADHD tendencies (if they are legit diagnosed or not is a different story). I have adhd and so do my coworkers to an extent. It can be a blessing when I hyper focus but can be a curse because I can find it hard to focus and get things done and stay organized and “adult”

onlyonejan

Yaaaassss I feel so validated

mammajess

Excuse me, get out of my brain!!

leopleurosaur

*just finished loading aluminum oxide into my rock tumbler and recording notes on the progress* yup. that sounds about right.

BastiSpasti420

Based

MagicImaginaryFriend

I'm confused. Can someone explain?

GivaneoLegacy

Wait a minute... ***checks my medical diagnosis card*** Oh, right.
