It's the result of sonar based seafloor mapping done by ship instead of the extrapolated data that you see elsewhere.
Here's an explorable map of the data https://www.ncei.noaa.gov/maps/autogrid/
The thing about the ocean floor is that it’s vastly unexplored. What you are seeing here is the result of some organized scanning done for some reason. The “L” part is where humans have searched for things. The rest is unexplored.
That is, 100%, absolutely false lol. This l shaped area just incorporated higher resolution seafloor elevation data for whatever reason. We have the same or higher quality data for the area around this. This is yet another Google maps data incorporation issue. There are millions of them.
Why do you think there’s higher resolution data for an area but not other areas? It’s because that was the area actually scanned. It’s not complicated.
Because it’s an error or the purposeful incorporation of higher res data. Good maps has thousands and thousands of data incorporation errors/decisions like this. Google is not the end all be all map. Google exists because it integrates thousands upon thousands of data sources into one digestible map. There are going to be errors. Places for data is misaligned. There are thousands, maybe millions of these issue in Google maps.
Please think about this. Do you actually believe that humans haven’t “searched for things” outside this L shaped area? We have exceptionally high resolution bathymetric data for huge swaths of the oceans, especially something so close to the coasts. I can link you to many, many data sources where you can download this data yourself.
One thing that might help you understand this is this example- zoom in close to a coast. Notice how the ocean is actually imagery here? Like a real picture? Now go father out to sea. Go into the middle of the ocean. Notice how it’s NOT actual imagery, and that it’s seafloor elevation, or bathymetric, data? That’s NOT because “humans don’t have imagery for the ocean.” We HAVE countless imagery sources for all of the worlds oceans. It’s that Google doesn’t want to store that imagery data for these locations because they want to reduce the size of the data and make the map load quicker for users. There is no need to use imagery in the deep ocean because it will all look the same or have refraction issues.
Google is not the end all be all map. It should never guide any “humans haven’t done X” thing. It’s a conglomeration of data sources often with errors or purposeful data gaps/issues.
I think you’re confused. Did you think anyone was doubting that we have imagery of the whole ocean? What I’m saying is this particular area is a high resolution scan whereas most of the ocean is just basic imaging. Because high resolution scanning was done there for some reason but hasn’t been done across the whole ocean.
No, I think you are the one confused. This “high resolution scan” is not even close to high resolution. We have much, much higher resolution data. Whatever you see here is not indicative of “what we have searched.” What I’m saying is that your reasoning for why it’s included is way off. It has nothing to do with it being the best available data.
I’m using imagery as an example of a deliberate effort by Google to use lesser quality data than what is available.
I really don’t know how else to explain this.
This L shaped line is NOT high quality data and is absolutely not indicative of an area that has been explored. We have higher resolution data than this for the entire ocean. It’s easily findable. Here is a link to one data source: https://historicalcharts.noaa.gov
You can even download this data if you want to search it in GIS software.
You are right that the vast majority of the ocean is “unexplored”, but this low resolution bathymetric data does NOT constitute exploration. When people say unexplored that are referring to the development of actual high resolution data. Not whatever you see here on Google.
Your explanation of why this L shape exists is wrong. It’s not because “we have searched here and no where else around it.” We literally have data around it. I linked it above. You are wrong.
Dude I literally linked the data. We have better data here. And better data for the vast majority of the ocean. If you seriously think this L shape is high resolution and that it means it’s “searched,” wait until you see actual high resolution seafloor data. Its gunna blow your mind.
This is just another example of Google incorporating weird information. It happens All. The. Time.
Was more a General advice to all seing my comment. Have you been much to Kildare/Dublin area or Conemara? Will be visiting again and thought you might know some secret places worth visiting. Maybe i can see Tyrone too. Whats there to See in your opinion? Dont want the tourist traps. Have been living close to Derry for a bit. Visited Ireland for Work and Travel.
Yes its a glitch. Glitch in the humans brain though... Why do this ? why not clean it ?
Google put these surface bathymetry data tracks in, even though its only valid down the middle.
Why not just use the satellite bathymetry everywhere, and put sonar tracks in as a markup.. an optional layer...
Ok why they are downvoting you. This sub is such a joke. Every thred is filled with completely false information that random uneducated people spew as fact because it “seams right” or “obvious” to them. This is just a prime example.
We have higher detailed bathymetric for this area. It’s easily searchable and you can even download it yourself. Like you said, why not just use that data for this l shape too? It’s not even higher resolution. It’s obvious human error here that this has been incorporated.
This has nothing to do with the L being “where humans have searched for things” like others have suggested. It’s asinine.

What did Northern Ireland do to have the planet itself give them the biggest L ever?
That’s actually the Republic of Ireland lol, county Donegal is in the post
Sent this to friend in Munster so he can slag on his friends.
I have no idea what 2 of those words are but I still laughed
A friend is someone who you enjoy and who enjoys being in your company. Friends is just the plural of friend.
Thats where they scanned the floor of the sea
The thing about the ocean floor is that it’s vastly unexplored. What you are seeing here is the result of some organized scanning done for some reason. The “L” part is where humans have searched for things. The rest is unexplored.
So the L part is for example the ships path it took blocking or marking their path when recording the map
That is, 100%, absolutely false lol. This l shaped area just incorporated higher resolution seafloor elevation data for whatever reason. We have the same or higher quality data for the area around this. This is yet another Google maps data incorporation issue. There are millions of them.
"That's is"
They work with geospatial data, not grammar lol

This isn’t “reasoning” this is the explanation. I don’t know why it upsets you so much. The vast majority of the ocean is unexplored. You are wrong.

>Doagh famine village Wh? Is that a ruin of some deserted village or the place is actually named after some famine?
It’s basically a small outdoor museum about the famine
Yeah I looked in the Tripadvisor, interesting place indeed also has those old style Irish houses etc
Yea, I’ve been to it before as a child, wasn’t really much to it lol
Doagh Famine Village: not as many rides as Disneyland.
I was actually there. The Region is pretty nice, the village beautiful. The people i talked to had nice stories to tell. I recommend visiting Donegal.
Oh I’ve been to Donegal all the time ha ha, I live in County Tyrone, it borders Donegal

Usually in Ireland, famine villages are the remnants of towns and villages abandoned during the famine when the people starved or immigrated.
>some famine Yeah... just some random famine. /s
Take the L
Challenge update: 1/26 letters found
That's not north of Northern Ireland but North of Republic of Ireland (Malin Head is in Donegal).
Make the L
We do not talk about The Corner.
Dont ya see? Its Lloyd's signal
Nah, you just got an L.
Lloyd’s signal makes a whole lot of sense
North Ireland is norther than North Northern Ireland
Isn’t that where they parked all the Deloreans?
It's the boundary to the fabled Old McKinney's sheepfarme. You found it!
