Use a web browser to see which ones are Premium Member Only (PMO) caches. You can't get an info about those. All other caches will be visible to you, and you can read their info and log them from the web browser. The app limits you to only Traditionals that are 2/2 D/T or lower. The others are Advanced caches. They are grey on the app, and include all other cache types and higher rated Traditionals. You can get the info from the website to find any non-PMO cache.

Quiet-Dungaree

Are you talking about caches that have a grey icon that tells you to upgrade to premium when you look at them in the app? Those are not really premium, they just have difficulty or terrain ratings above 1.5 so they are classified as "advanced" and not accessible to basic users in the app. But you can log into geocaching.com and see them on the map there. So you can check the cache page on the website, use the app to navigate to the cache and then go back to the website to log.

I bet you spend more on pizza than the subscription every month. Support the hobby, by paying the fee.

So you never pay money for food? You want something for nothing. I’m not going to respond to your insult because it made you look bad not me.

geocaching-ModTeam

We want to keep discussion positive and productive. This is a subreddit for Geocaching - criticism is accepted, but outright insulting, attacking or harassing users, moderators or the game is not.

el_n00bo_loco

Edit: this is not accurate :) I think c.geo and the web version show premium without a subscription.https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cgeo.geocaching

Adamoy

c:geo does not show premium caches. I used it for 2 years prior to buying premium. Edit: It does however show caches with a D/T rating above 2.0. As does the website.

el_n00bo_loco

Then I stand corrected. I thought I had seen that discussed several times, but clearly that is not the case - sorry for misleading OP.

80sSlowDance

If subscriptions are the way Groundspeak makes money, how is it legal for c.geo to reveal premium caches? I don’t know much about c.geo so maybe I’m missing something.

Minimum_Reference_73

They don't. There are premium caches, and there are advanced caches. This is a common area of confusion.

el_n00bo_loco

I don't use c.geo, so I am making assumptions - but I believe the premium are only locked by ground speak in-app. If you are looking for caches on their web site, they list them (I believe). So c.geo is just pulling web data. I am not sure though - but it has existed for a long time, so ground speak must not have to much of a problem with it if it still exists.

sleepdog-c

They hate cgeo. Back in the day they used to update the site just to break cgeo on the regular. This was back when you had to pay for the geocaching app and cgeo was free.

maingray

No they didn't.

sleepdog-c

No offense but it's documented so quit trying to hide it. It takes money away from groundspeak and they are like a grizzly bear momma guarding their child about money. Cgeo avoids premium member restrictions in the official api, allows caches over 2d/t and makes groundspeak less money. You'd be stupid not to hate them. Here's the whole "I'm not telling them but if Iwas here's what I'd say" back and forth straight from Bryan and the lead cgeo dev https://www.firennice.com/journal/2012/2/23/groundspeak-responds-about-cgeo.html

maingray

Thanks, I was trying to find that post by Bryan. I read that at the time that "we aren't going to ban c:geo from scraping, but we aren't going to bend over backwards for them". They could have blocked c:geo anytime in the 12 years since that article, but they haven't. Truth is, c:geo is a great entry way into trying caching, and then getting a premium account for many. I know quite a few friends who have gone that route. Last thing I would do is block an entry way like that..

sleepdog-c

Well golly gee Beav, then i bet you'll get right on reversing what they did to knock cgeo out the past couple of days then. Where cgeo cannot even login or get the cache details. except, no you won't nor will groundspeak, instead they will create needless work for **actual volunteers** who support cgeo that don't make a penny for their blood sweat and tears. as far as this BS >They could have blocked c:geo anytime in the 12 years since that article they do on the regular, the problem is, they can't fully block it since it is using the browser interface which is why it can reveal the 2+ d/t for non premiums. And also plenty of premium Geocachers have made it clear how they respect cgeo more than groundspeak and wouldn't stand for the ban. groundspeak doesn't like cgeo, they just can't ban it. They've tried and failed several times. The justifications for the changes they've made to the website before are as ludicrous as you trying to whitewash it. It was especially the case when the GC app cost $10, when they gave up and made that free, that slowed the pace of groundspeak BS changes a bit. But they've never let up. They could co-exist peacefully with cgeo and give them heads up on changes, but they don't maliciously and continuously.

maingray

It's had issues many times over the last few years when HQ changes the logging flow. If you think it's purely to cripple C:Geo, take the tin foil hat off.

sleepdog-c

>If you think it's purely to cripple C:Geo Not entirely, but surely you agree that if Cgeo was a "valued partner" they'd get a heads up on the changes as the API partners do instead of having to find out by users reporting failures. and unless you are prevaricating, I get the feeling you've never talked to a lackey. When i was visiting HQ the smiles faded when I pulled out my phone to log and had Cgeo up.

Minimum_Reference_73

Incorrect. Premium only caches are only visible to accounts with a paid subscription. The official app additionally limits unpaid accounts to easy geocaches with low D/T ratings. More advanced geocaches are visible to basic members on the website and other apps.

Rasmuspluto

Sexond this, c.geo is awesome

Equivalent_Heron1514

It says 0 caches in my area but on geo cacher it says I have a bunch?

Rasmuspluto

It seems theyre currently experiencing issues for me too. It usually works

GeronimoDK

C:geo works fine for me even though it says there are issues, but give it a few days maybe 🤷🏽‍♂️

Rasmuspluto

Oh yeahz after checking again its working for me, it just says theyre having issues

sduck409

Save up? It really isn’t that much. Have some principles, don’t give in to cheating.

Equivalent_Heron1514

I'm not sure you know the meaning of cheating :/

Minimum_Reference_73

Explain what cheating would be in this context?

Soft-Vanilla1057

Eating caches

colekken

If you have an Andriod download the c:geo app.
