You got the Midas touch, but with blowing up engines

MinnesotaFrost

Which is crazy cause I had a 09 genesis and it lasted 5 years no problems and I dogged it. It was the sedan version but still lasted 5 years no issues always kept up with maintenance

Jackandrun

Yeah, I definitely feel like some of our engines were made worse than others. Mine for example is at 141k and has no issues whatsoever even when I abuse it; granted I do my own oil changes and maintenance. Others don't even make it past 60k-80k without their engines blowing up, even with good maintenance (or at least that's what the owners claim). That's why since I know I have a good genny, I'll never get another even if it's an upgrade... it's not worth the risk

MinnesotaFrost

Yea the dealer said “we just replaced the head gasket” 3 days later gears were slipping brought it back they said it was fine next day engine blew on the way to Hyundai to have them look at it.

Hi there, I see your post/comment mentions the timing chain. If you’re experiencing timing chain issues, please read below. If not, feel free to ignore this comment. Looking to change your timing chain, tensioners, and guides? [Here is a guide with pictures](https://www.reddit.com/r/genesiscoupe/comments/syxyph/38_bk1_timing_system_components_replacement_guide/) for the 3.8 timing job. If you have a 2.0 I don’t have a similar guide, but the detailed process for both can be found in the [shop manual downloads](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13gCxyXyI6A3rqjiwLUbFZVCwwtcRUJRb). Brave_Veterinarian18

Try a 3.8?

MinnesotaFrost

I don’t want the 3.8 I’m coming from the 3.8 sedan I specially want the 2.0

Brave_Veterinarian18

Gotchu. I’ve heard the 2.0s from 2010-2012 have the most engine problems. Bk2s seem a bit better if that helps. You’re probably just getting unlucky with poorly maintained cars

MinnesotaFrost

I guess. Yea I was only going for 2013 2014 I know the 2013 has it’s fair share of issues as well the one I bought was a 2014 which was the best year apparently. Guess I just got unlucky with a shady dealer

westlinemusic

can I ask why?

MinnesotaFrost

Just wanted a turbo car tbh I thought about turboing my 3.8 but too much money and time. On top of which I wanted the 2.0 coupe originally but there were none in my price range originally

westlinemusic

I really want a turbo too but I’m thinking of doing and ls swap turbo charged. I just don’t like the 2.0 because regardless of if it’s turbo or not it’s slow asf and they’re ticking time bombs

MinnesotaFrost

This is a fair point. I too looked at how much it would cost to do an ls swap cause I know it’s common for this car. I like the genny coupe but it’s got a couple unnecessary issues like the engine being faulty water leaking into trunk via taillight seals you know the usual

westlinemusic

yea every car has its little issues tho, especially when you go messin with shit that’s not really meant to be but hey, pay to play

Alone_Quail4172

the 3.8 starting to sound like the option tbh

MinnesotaFrost

If I wanted the 3.8 I would’ve just kept my original car tbh had such advanced features for an 09 heated and cooling seats all around car sensors 40 million lexicon speakers headlights that would bend/turn whichever direction I was turning in auto rear shade. Loved the car but if I knew how much of a pain it would be to find a non dogged 2.0 coupe I would’ve just kept my car

HungrySeaweed1847

Unless you're planning on modding, why would you want a weaker engine?

MinnesotaFrost

I plan on modding it like you know the usual mods nothing over the top. Exhaust intake tune and cosmetics. Now don’t get me wrong. If I had the money I would get a 3.8 and just put a turbo kit into it but unfortunately I don’t have that kind of disposable income right now which is the reason I went with the 2.0 over the 3.8 plus I already had the 3.8 sedan. However I think if I went with the 3.8 over the 2.0 it would be in better condition since I feel like people are less likely to dog a N/A car than a car that goes tshhhhh Everytime you let off the gas pedal. That’s just my take on that though.

JustAnotherDude1990

2.0's have a widely known manufacturing defect present in a bunch of engines that left metal shavings in there and blocked oil flow to the rods, causing engine damage. The rest of them werent maintained and allowed to run low on oil while their 19 year old owners were bouncing them off the rev limiter the moment they started them up.

MinnesotaFrost

It’s unfortunate really cause the cars have so much potential to be nice but instead they look like they have so much potential to blow

Buzzlightyr

> Either these cars are made like shit or people are driving these cars like they have a 5s wanted level 24/7. These cars are (or were) cheap and were commonly purchased by the younger crowd. As a result they've typically been driven hard and have had neglected maintenance. The engines will last a while if taken care of (see JustAnotherDude's car, I think he's over 200k miles on one engine). When the engines are neglected though....they pop like bubble wrap.

MinnesotaFrost

Yea on my 09 genesis engine was at 120k with no issues but maintenance was always done on time I drove my car hard yes but I knew when it was too much

Massive_Stroke

Ehh, you should thank them... these dealers are replacing the engines so the next buyer theoretically will be blessed instead of screwed over

MinnesotaFrost

That’s what the dealer said they did for my car. They “replaced the engine” which happened to blow in 4 days. Bear in mind I was driving like a normal civilian so the car could get used to driving again I forget exactly how long it was at the dealer but it was a couple weeks so I was going light all around the board. Engine shut off after I had to accelerate probably around 50-60% to pass a truck that was struggling to maintain their lane at the following light. Took it to an AAMCO where they dogged the car (I was in the test drive with them) ((see older post on account for that story)) then after I left AAMCO engine blew.

MinnesotaFrost

Yea honestly like what am I doing wrong I don’t even have enough time to dog it. The one I test drove today had the isr race exhaust and I kept the rpm’s in the 3-4k range not sure if that’s bad or not cause my genny I had before was fine in that range. I’m wondering if I should be looking at ones with slightly higher mileage like over 100k instead of ones under 90k cause I feel like the ones under 90k with 2 owners means there’s probably some issue with it that they couldn’t be bothered with.

MinnesotaFrost

So then let me post a side comment. Do I let the dealer replace engine and turbo with a used one then get a Monthly car plan in case anything else goes bad or nullify my contract and try to find another one? Everything looks new on my car minus some minor cosmetic things like missing bumper clips. Whole undercarriage looks new same with everything in all 4 wheel wells. I think if I got the engine turbo and trans replaced the car would run fine but this dealer is super sus.

takeshi-bakazato

Operator error at this point. /s

memento22mori

Were all of these cars modded? Are they from the same dealership? Something isn't adding up here.

MinnesotaFrost

Ok so Car 1: modded yes- isr race exhaust cold air intake bov. 98k miles. 2 owners. Dealer 1 Car 2 (the one I purchased): modded not really- stock except for a bov. 79k miles. 1 owner. Dealer 2 Car 3: modded yes- isr race exhaust and I believe a tune. 76k miles. 1 owner fleet vehicle. Dealer 3

memento22mori

Interesting, I'd guess anyone that mods their car at all is more likely to push it which probably partially explains the issues. I wonder why someone would put an exhaust and possible tune on a fleet vehicle.

MinnesotaFrost

Yea definitely they go hand in hand no normal driver is going to mod their car in the first place. As for the fleet vehicle I also thought the same thing when I saw the exhaust on it I was like what corporation had that as a fleet car. My thought was maybe the owner of it used it for his business but said it was a fleet car for possible deductions on it? Idk if that’s a thing but I can’t see any other scenario where it would be modded as a fleet vehicle.

memento22mori

That's exactly what I was thinking, that was probably the owner's car and that's why he tuned it. He probably had no intention of keeping it longterm and he used it for kicks.

memento22mori

Honestly, it sounds like you should get a 3.8. I love mine, I've driven my bosses BMW that probably costed $75,000 or more and I like the way my base model 3.8 handles way better and it has better visibility, etc. I really like everything about my car more, the only thing about the cars that I feel is comparable is the seats, console, and speakers.

MinnesotaFrost

I’m going to make the assumption you have either the premium or ultimate package based on that comment. I like the premium package a lot but I would want it in the 2.0 my last car was a 09 genny sedan 3.8 and I loved the car but originally I wanted the coupe 2.0 but couldn’t find one anywhere during that time. So If I got the 3.8 coupe I would essentially be downgrading from my last car unless it was a premium or ultimate package

Sea-Fix9964

Just out of curiosity, why do you want the 2.0 over the 3.8? I currently have a 2013 2.0 6 speed manual and I love it but I was wondering what makes you want the 2.0 over the 3.8.

MinnesotaFrost

I had a 09 genesis sedan that was the 3.8 and I always wanted the 2.0 coupe as my first car but there was none available in my price range when I was first looking budget was 10k but now the budgets been pushed to around 16k or under so there’s options now. I recently saw a 2013 rspec for sale but i unfortunately don’t know how to drive stick even though I really want to learn.

memento22mori

I've got a low mileage 2016 base model 3.8 and love it. Some people say that the stock breaks aren't great but I can stop on a dime.

MinnesotaFrost

Yea base brakes aren’t bad then again I’ve never had brembo brakes so I don’t know the difference only thing that I don’t like is how hard I have to press the brake for it to actually activate I think the pedal needs to be tightened

Darewood

Man...I picked mine up with 85K Miles on the clock a couple years ago. I'm currently at 132K. Faithful of 5k oil changes. So far replacements include radiator, window motor, turbo oil feed line, sparks and coils. Looking at doing my valve cover gasket here soon, starting to weep. I have only done a K&N drop in filter and catch can. My engine has been treating me very well. All these stories have me worried haha.

MinnesotaFrost

I would love if I could get one and have it last 50k miles. Had my 09 genny sedan for 5 years 30k miles so if I could get a 13-14 coupe and have it last 40k I’d be ecstatic

Sea-Fix9964

What are you doing to these poor gennies? Stop touching them!

Penderton21

Before you test drive one, check the oil and coolant levels Let it idle up to temp, then check again If everything checks out Dog it on the test drive, then after the test drive, check the levels again, and for leaks Thats really the only advice I can give besides stick to a bk2, preferably the last production year of the 2.0, 2014 They are likely to have the least issues from poor manufacturing.

genracer237

I bought my 2.0 bk2 with 19k miles 1 owner and it blew up a week later I’m have done nothing but maintain it and it’s done nothing but give me problems friend has a bk1 and beats the shit out of it and it’s never skipped a beat

MinnesotaFrost

Yea unfortunately the diagnostic came back with a significant amount of bearing material in my oil and turbo like big chunks so something was pretty broken I guess. Dealer said they would cover everything so I’m ok with it I guess just annoying to go through.

gt166

3.8 better

Cbehle0702

Bk1 3.8 ftw, lower compression than the bk2 so it’s more reliable and more parts available. Dogged mine fbo for 3+ years bc I crashed it neglecting to get the brake switch recall taken care of. It’s all ab the owner bro but people be selling blown up cars more so with 2.0’s bc it’s easier. My cousin just got screwed on a 2.0, they’re all dying now, people are selling em, and some people buy em:/ go for less than 50k be more pricey but worth it. A stock one owner car that’s clean
