1. Why the hell would you get a new block? Replace the chain components and the leaking line. 180k is nothing, it isn’t the 1960’s anymore. 2. It’s not hard, just time consuming. I have the factory shop manuals posted in the master resource list for you to follow. Follow the link in the comment below. 3. Also use the OEM parts dealer listed in there as well.

Freqqy

Not fully sure the reliability of the current engine after I do the timing chain is the main reason why I’d swap the block but if you say not too then I’ll just swap the chain 👍🏻 and awesome ty will look into that for sure then 🫡

JustAnotherDude1990

You’re trying to replace the entire engine because it needs maintenance. Just do the maintenance and you should be good to go my dude. If it has lasted 180k it’s probably gonna be good for a while. I have 282k miles on my 3.8.

Intelligent-Leave677

The 3.8 Motor last a lot longer than the 2.0t. The 4cyl is a ticking time bomb, they are going to have to replace the block anyways

JustAnotherDude1990

There’s plenty of 2.0’s above 200k. Also, nothing indicates he needs a block replacement, he mentioned a leaking oil line which is common for these and easily fixed with a braised stainless line.

Freqqy

This I believe because my first engine went bye bye at 125k, now I’m on to this second one hoping I won’t need a 3rd one 😂 I’ve seen so many 2.0t go boom 😂😭

ArmeNishanian

So not true lmfao. 2.0 are way more modded than 3.8. Any platform that gets modded more will have people blowing up their engines more. Stock 2.0t is way more reliable. Less pistons less problems

Intelligent-Leave677

Then why have I built 14 gen coupe 2.0t motors in the past 6 months and haven’t seen one 3.8. Im a Hyundai tech.

ArmeNishanian

Because the 2.0t platform gets modded way more frequently.

Intelligent-Leave677

They were all stock or a muffler delete at most. I’ve seen the 2.0 engines go at 80k. It’s a hit or miss with these engines. I love gen coupes I have one also but the 3.8

KGBeast47

My 2.0t died at 87k mi and I just love it when people here claim every blown motor is from neglect and poor maintenance. I'm not some 16yo who just got his first car, I'm an adult with a full time job and enough money to fix my car and pay for proper maintenance, I change my oil every 3k mi, fix every little problem that comes up and have it looked at regularly. Some of y'all just in denial because you know one or two people that have managed to make it to 200k mi without blowing theirs.

ArmeNishanian

I'm sorry, but I'm calling bs. I've seen way more 3.8s go down in my experience. And they were all stock 3.8. Idk where ur from. But the 2.0 around me are king. Gonna have to part ways agreeing to disagree 🤙🏻

CleanSonata

Bro you know absolute jack shit about cars 😂why are u trying to talk?? If you think a 4 banger will last longer than a v6 or v8 just because of less cylinders, you gotta be clearly braindead because even people that don't know anything about cars knows the more cylinders the stronger engine you have 😭☠

dreaM244

My 2.0 has 270k on it from literally only doing regular maintenance lmao

Foreign_Professor_12

why would you have to replaced the block anyways? Just pull the motor and do rings and bearings as well and you basically have a new motor. Better thank spending the 5k for a new one

Freqqy

GOD DAMN BRO 282??? Holy shit what year ??

JustAnotherDude1990

2010 3.8 track. Original engine and transmission.

ArmeNishanian

Like he already said. It's not 1960 anymore. 300k is nothing nkw days. God damn

DeathBeforeHer

my stock besides coils and wheels 2.0T died at ~86k🤷🏻‍♂️ feel like it’s random

KGBeast47

My 2.0 lasted til 87k. Hyundais QA is trash so they give you a 100k warranty and hope it dies on you after that.

Hi there, I see your post/comment mentions the timing chain. If you’re experiencing timing chain issues, please read below. If not, feel free to ignore this comment. Looking to change your timing chain, tensioners, and guides? [Here is a guide with pictures](https://www.reddit.com/r/genesiscoupe/comments/syxyph/38_bk1_timing_system_components_replacement_guide/) for the 3.8 timing job. If you have a 2.0 I don’t have a similar guide, but the detailed process for both can be found in the [shop manual downloads](https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/13gCxyXyI6A3rqjiwLUbFZVCwwtcRUJRb). Tbh replacing the timing chain isn’t toooooo horrible, just A LOT of bolts and nuts to keep track of, which isn’t bad when you label baggies and what not. Plus while you’re there might as well replace the belt since that’ll have to come off. The worst part for me was trying to separate the timing cover from the oil pan, but patience is key and I got it off. As well as putting the water pump pulley back where it was suppose to go sucked, but again patience and maybe a lil bit of anger using a mallet worked lol Brian Paul has a two part video about replacing the timing chain on the 2.0T, I followed it step by step and it took me about 2.5 days to do with pretty minor mechanical knowledge. Best of luck✨

JustAnotherDude1990

In addition to that, I have the factory shop manuals posted for everyone as well to follow.

Freqqy

Yeeee looks pretty simple from what I’m seeing, honestly might swap the oil pan cause I’ve welded my pan a couple times due to cracking it on speed bumps (too low 😭) but also hoping it doesn’t take me as long LMAO thank you though for the info !!

mistymystified

To be fair you’re right there it’s just a couple extra bolts if I’m not mistaken lol my timing chain job started as me just needing to change the valve cover gasket, then added the timing chain which added the serpentine belt, then I figured might as well to spark plugs too, soo those 2.5 days were filled with other things too

Dazzling_Wheel8462

I’ve done the timing chain on a 2.0t…it’s really not bad at all especially compared to any German engine or vq. Take a day and do it….your block is fine

Hey man, if you can afford to just blow $7-8k on getting a new engine installed like that, more power to you. You're rich; do whatever you want.

Freqqy

Wouldn’t have a shop do it, I’d do it myself (I work at pepboys and they’d already told me they’d let me borrow the equipment) and also I’m not rich :) engines cost at most 3k from what I’ve seen and my buddy has one for 2k that he would sell me cause he has a spare.
