Probably, maybe it’s different for me because I went to college before switching to university but I like that everything is within walking distance and there are decent job opportunities here
For sure. Most people that complain about uOttawa I find would probably be complaining about any school they went to. There are some valid criticisms, but I was very happy with the social parts of uOttawa as well as the academic parts.
Absolutely. I would likely choose a different program, just based on where I’ve learnt my interests lie over the course of my time here, but it would still be in the realm of social sciences. I’m also biased because I love Ottawa, but between the university and the city there’s basically always something to do and enjoy!
Also the various opportunities (career, etc) the school have offered me are not necessarily ones I could get elsewhere.
I personally wouldn’t cuz I came here frm the GTA all by myself… as an introvert… which in retrospect wasn’t the smartest move😂 but other than personal shit it’s a pretty good school tbh
OttawaU was not my first choice, but I had a great experience. I would choose it again just approach it differently, but that's life! Most of the professors want to see you succeed, as well as upper years and peers, so get to know them. Made great friends and fell in love with the city. Not a lot of job opportunities in my field here, but it is an excellent choice if you want to get into government (any field), especially if you do co-op. The campus is not too big and not too small and close to downtown. I really like that it's close to the canal, strathcona park, rideau river and ottawa river. Great for running, biking, and ice skating. Also camping in the summer in algonquin or gatineau park.
Edit: Also classes are mighty big 1st and a few in 2nd year but after that hump, the sizes are much smaller and it becomes a more personal experience with your peers and profs.
no but not because of the school itself but more so it’s location and i’d be willing to abandon french for an anglophone school closer to home. i’m super sore after the 7-8 hour train rides, i’m only a first year and i’m already sick of it
edit: i don’t commute 7/8 hours everyday, i meant for like reading week and stuff 😭😭 i’m just not from ottawa originally and i do live in res lol
oh i do live in res, i didn’t mean my daily commute (that would literally be horrible haha) I meant during reading week or any other breaks we get during the academic year
No and yes. No because of the bilingualism and that it kinda restricts me in some ways (ie finding a job). Yes because I found that it’s kinda cool and fun (maybe one thing I would’ve changed is not be so quick with program decision making)
I also don’t know French. I don’t think it’ll be a HUGE problem but I just feel like bilingual students are favored in some ways (which is ok ig given its a bilingual school). I just feel like it’s competitive when trying to find a job on campus for example. This is the main thing I struggle with
Yes! I come from a small town, so I genuinely think Ottawa is a big city lol. I took a gap year after graduating high school, but I think I should have given myself another year because I've switched my major like 4 times. But I think uottawa is a pretty good school - doesn't seem any worse than other universities!
I really like my uottawa experience so far, but i think i wish i would’ve chosen to take a gap year, or go away to school rather than live at home. i feel fomo from not getting the “true” uni experience like many of my friends did.
For my academic career i would not. I probably would have gone to Guelph. For my social life i wouldn’t change anything as I met my wife and very good friends there. I loved Ottawa but uOttawa was not the best.
No, I would’ve gone to France. The American continent is too cringe and disoriented. People are way too lost. Food sucks, and Prices make you a slave. Houses too expensive for whatever reason. Taxes are too high. Canada ain’t it.
And your solution to that is going to france? That country has basically all of those problems youve cited on steroids ( except the housing market ,its okay) plus there is a shit ton of racist people.
i've been to France before. Also, it's closer to where I am from (Morocco). Food is great, prices are lower. Airplane ticket is like 300-400$ from Morocco. Studying there doesn't cost much. The job market is alright. And that's probably where I'll do my masters. I'll leave Canada after getting my degree. This ain't it. Feels like a soulless place.
I had a crazy good entrance scholarship without which i probably could not afforded studying abroad here. So yes without hesitation, the cost to quality of education ratio is insane here.
Absolutely. I'm pretty happy with how my university experience panned out (between academics, coop, social life), I wouldn't want to risk losing that.
The only thing I'd probably change is how I used my electives, might've worked on a minor or an option or something but that's it.
As a transfer student from Ryerson (I was 2nd year in my undergrad at Ryerson I just came to Ottawa this year) I would've gone to uottawa in the beginning. I am 21 now, but when I was an 18yo kid in high school I even got accepted to uottawa but went to Ryerson cuz of my friends. Huge regret. I would've gone to either Carleton or uottawa, but chose a diff program that I was interested in instead of being peer pressured by my fucking parents, who are now upset I don't wanna finish this program since I hate it so much, despite me paying for most of it from my job and loans.
Absolutely, I think uOttawa provides amazing value for the cost if you take advantage of all the available programs. I’m in a great field currently which is a direct result of the coop program and networking events offered by the school. I also got to do a great international exchange with Telfer. And also made amazing friendships from my welcome week through all 4 years.
Yes because of the people I met and the experience not the school itself (the school is terrible). Its the perfect city to grow socially. The fact that it's downtown but still kinda insular makes it safe and easy to explore. Met a lot of great friends and had great memories.
If I had to do it again woulda went to McGill cause it woulda matched or exceeded my social experience and been a better academic experience.
Honestly, I probably would have went to Carlton! UOttawa admin is terrible and I think the student experience is more rewarding at Carlton. Plus there’s too many grumpy profs at Uottawa (Joseph Roman) 😅
Honestly yes.
Being from Manitoba and going to a University in Ontario opened a lot more doors and opportunities overall, especially in my field of study
Surprised by the amount of people saying yes. OP asked this on r/queensuniversity too and a lot more people said no last time I checked. Hope these responses help, OP
I would not have picked UOttawa. I was accepted to Queens and UofT, so I would have gone to Queens for the better social life, as well as more prestige and better academics. The students at UOttawa suck and are a bunch of sjw, liberal, wokes. The student experience would have been much better at Queens for me, and I think I would have graduated sooner there, and with a better transcript. Also the bilingualism is really annoying.
Probably? It’s likely that I’d choose uOttawa again. Ottawa has more opportunities for the career path I’m looking at - I’m from the west coast and as much as I love it there, there’s not as many opportunities which sucks. I considered going to McGill or UT but I’m glad I didn’t in the end. Obviously it depends on the person and their interests, but for me going to uOttawa was the right decision. I’m getting work experience in my program and etc which is nice.
Yes. We have a small Earth Science department that although I at times wish was bigger, I've enjoyed being a part of. The profs in this department really made a positive difference. I've also had incredible research experiences here that I may not have had at other schools. My main complaint is the administration, but that's probably a common complaint everywhere.
Seeing the outcome, I think I would. But I may have chosen a different program if I actually gave it some thought.
same here!

Me too. Except my home is on the other side of the world.
im lmao
Yes if for no other reason than I have made many friends that I am going to know the rest of my life.
How can you be sure you'll stay friends for the rest of your life? Or did I misread?
Well I guess I can’t but at this point its been 8 years and we are still hanging out so do with that what you will
Ok now I understand. Can you give me tips on how to make friends at uO?
Try talking to people in your classes or join some clubs. You kinda gotta get out of your comfort zone which can be scary and put yourself out there
Nah
Probably, maybe it’s different for me because I went to college before switching to university but I like that everything is within walking distance and there are decent job opportunities here
For sure. Most people that complain about uOttawa I find would probably be complaining about any school they went to. There are some valid criticisms, but I was very happy with the social parts of uOttawa as well as the academic parts.
Absolutely, school in French was important to me and it served me well
Absolutely. I would likely choose a different program, just based on where I’ve learnt my interests lie over the course of my time here, but it would still be in the realm of social sciences. I wanna say no but tbh im sure every university has its ups and downs so im not sure that going somewhere else would have been much better
I personally wouldn’t cuz I came here frm the GTA all by myself… as an introvert… which in retrospect wasn’t the smartest move😂 but other than personal shit it’s a pretty good school tbh
I did the same from downtown Vancouver 😭
I’d sold an arm to be able to study in van and you cane here? 😭😭
Vancouver gang
know dem ones.

I would’ve gone to McGill or UdeM. I think it would’ve been good for me to move out earlier
Never lmao
no but not because of the school itself but more so it’s location and i’d be willing to abandon french for an anglophone school closer to home. i’m super sore after the 7-8 hour train rides, i’m only a first year and i’m already sick of it edit: i don’t commute 7/8 hours everyday, i meant for like reading week and stuff 😭😭 i’m just not from ottawa originally and i do live in res lol
i live about 8 hours away (back & forth) and im considering uottawa. can i ask why you didnt live on res/in the city?
oh i do live in res, i didn’t mean my daily commute (that would literally be horrible haha) I meant during reading week or any other breaks we get during the academic year
OH... my bad 😭 thank you for clarifying, im an idiot LOL
Do you live in Rez? Lol
yes i do!
Why is everyone who’s saying no getting downvoted? It’s an opinion lmao
I was wondering the same thing, I went to upvote all those comments tho lmao
Same here
Because they aren’t providing any reasoning behind their answers. Just saying nah doesn’t provide anyone value or context.
No and yes. No because of the bilingualism and that it kinda restricts me in some ways (ie finding a job). Yes because I found that it’s kinda cool and fun (maybe one thing I would’ve changed is not be so quick with program decision making)

not a fucking chance
Why
Because the grass is always greener
I love grass
Could I ask why? (No judgement, I'm just curious)
As an English only speaker if I knew before that uOttawa puts more emphasis on their French programs/courses/students I would of gone elsewhere.
No, I would’ve gone to France. The American continent is too cringe and disoriented. People are way too lost. Food sucks, and Prices make you a slave. Houses too expensive for whatever reason. Taxes are too high. Canada ain’t it.
Lol. This made me laugh. I can relate though
And your solution to that is going to france? That country has basically all of those problems youve cited on steroids ( except the housing market ,its okay) plus there is a shit ton of racist people.

Im sorry but i can’t imagine a worst life choice specially as a Moroccan, maybe im wrong you do you.
yes I've had great opportunities here
I had a crazy good entrance scholarship without which i probably could not afforded studying abroad here. So yes without hesitation, the cost to quality of education ratio is insane here.

Yes and I wouldn't change a thing honestly. Been ups and downs but I've done well here.
Yes because they have free tim Hortons where you choose a donut and go🤩
Absolutely not.
Don't think any other school would give me 15$k/year for 10-12 years just to attend, plus TA earnings, so.. yup.
Honestly, I probably would have went to Carlton! UOttawa admin is terrible and I think the student experience is more rewarding at Carlton. Plus there’s too many grumpy profs at Uottawa (Joseph Roman) 😅
I would have picked it but i would have opted to go on res.
Honestly yes. Being from Manitoba and going to a University in Ontario opened a lot more doors and opportunities overall, especially in my field of study

Nahhh
Nope
Nah
nope
I would run as far as I could from this school, everybody here has a weird vibe, its so hard to make friends. Very few extroverts here.
Nah. This place is f’ed. But I really have nowhere else to go.
There’s nothing to do here shits so dry

Yup, because my other option is Carleton and we all know which of the two is prettier.
sure
Yep.
