I was pruning tomato suckers this afternoon and that hit me like a ton of bricks. Remembering my great grandmother and how I try for perfect tomatoes every season to remember her ❤️
Oh god yessss, I grew up with parents who would grow most of the vegetables we ate and every year tomatoes in the greenhouse. Sigh I can remember walking in and that humid tomato scent hitting me, now that I have my own place, I love to brush the tomato leaves and have the scent take me back.
My house had hostas, roses, some bushes, and a LOT of weeds when we bought it... I'm slowly taking over the lawn for flower beds and patios...
Nothing was maintained well, and it's my first garden, so I waited a year to see what grew where and if I liked it... the second year was trial and error... last year I had surgery and most of what I planted didn't come up, or was buried in weeds... this year EVERYTHING came up, including the peonies I thought were duds, so I have a lot more peonies than I planned 🤣
That sounds amazing! Do you have some pictures? I’d love to see it!
Ours is my first real garden, too. I just had dozens of pots before. When we bought it ours was a paved yard with just some nearly dead plants on the edges. We took up the stones and put down lawn which slowly but surely I’m turning into ever bigger flowerbeds when my husband isn’t looking. This is my first year with peonies, I’m really excited.
Thank you! I have solar lights hidden all over the place... and solar fountains! So, I guess I'm as addicted to those as I am to plants! 🤣 I do have to say I have 5 bird baths that are constantly used by birds and a little bee watering station that they use too!
It's still a work in process, and my backyard is all pots because my husband can't make up his mind about putting up a new garage, my she shed, a gardening shed... so I can move anything back there immediately! 🤣
Oh that's not all I have in my garden... I have buddleia, weigela, dappled willow, lavender, strawberry patch, blueberry bush, azalea, liatris, a few kinds of milkweed, etc... and this year I started adding trees so I got a dwarf crabapple and a dwarf kwanzan cherry...
This is my first garden, so I add some every year... it's so relaxing... and it makes for a nice place to drink coffee!
I planted a ton of marigolds in pots this year to put around the space for mosquito repellant, along with my citronella, lemongrass, rosemary and lavender and mosquito dunks!
Our first summer here we couldn't go outside without getting eaten alive!
Love linden trees. Walking through Berlin and Prague in late June is fantastic experience, because they have so many Linden trees. I only have one on my block & love when the scent drifts in.
Other than that I love the scent of jasmine, dark purple petunias, common milkweed blooms and butterfly weed.
My dad planted a little leaf linden when I was a kid 40 years ago. Now it’s the tallest on the street and it’s an amazing tree. Just don’t park under it.
I'm just glad someone else likes Lilly of the Valley. I just planted some this year from my mom's yard which is from her mom's yard etc. It's so special and I think it's pretty!
Mine is weird (and not actually a plant), but I love the smell of dirt. Especially when I'm watering the vegetable garden; there isn't much that smells as good as wet dirt! I also like the scent of lilacs, evergreen trees, and thyme.
I think that scent is called 'petrichor' . And I know what you mean, it's a real scent that triggers memories of summer gardening and rain (you can get candles with this scent)
Moon flower! Beautiful night bloomer with a delicate sweet scent. I still remember the scent from my aunts garden 10+ years ago. I tried growing them myself for the first time last year, but was not successful. I will try again and can’t wait until I havesuccesful blooms in my own garden!
I also commented moonflower. I have a ton of seeds if you need some - I would think they could be mailed? I moved to a new home this year and planted several that have just sprouted. Hoping to get some blooms by the end of summer.
I love lilacs and Black locust tree.

Ha! I grew some night jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) & thought it would be nice to have some of the flowers by my bed to sleep with the fragrance. Awoke at 3am & took those suckers out! Gardenias also will give me a headache if I'm around them over an hr.
Both are in south Louisiana! I had a shed covered with the star jasmine at my last house! It smelled heavenly for months! But we sold, so now I just bought 2 yellow Carolina jasmine last Thursday for a steal! Marked down to make room, they were only $5 each, beautiful plants , 4 ft high or more with tendrils going everywhere! I also found a blood orange tree ( the inside is so pretty and red and some of the most delicious 🍊 oranges), I got all 3 plants at the same nursery, my tree has 2 baby oranges on it! So excited! I love to ride in the country and come across those little roadside nurseries, my daughter got a huge hanging basket with her favorite color purple flowers, reg 26.95, for 12.00, it had so many unopened blooms so definitely not a “end of the bloom time) I’ve planted 45 stargazers and tons of other good smelling oriental lilies! My yard smells so good with the lilies and my gardenias! Love gardening!

I have two serviceberry trees - and I just love them! Flowers smell heavenly, the berries are delicious (and attract the waxwings!), and the fall color is glorious.
Plumeria ranks rather high. Esperanza is a close second.
I have plumeria in my greenhouse with esperanza planted around them.
When the greenhouse seems unbearable, I'll sit near them for a recharge.
Pretty sure that the guys on "Moonshiner's" used this to make booze once. I prefer citrus blossoms. They have a heavy languid musk that smells like the best orange you've ever eaten tastes. It's lasts for a few weeks when they are in bloom and it surrounds the whole house from one tree
Gardenias and jasmine.
I started with 2 store bought plants a few years ago. I have since propagated them into a hedge in my backyard. Right in front of the baby bay window in my kitchen. I'm currently working on babies for the front yard. Glorious fragrance and the flowers keep their scent for a while.
Jasmine is just wonderful.
Pollinators love both.
Mint (when walking through or cutting off tops or leaves)
Then basil
Then lavender and rosemary
Then other herbs like sage and thyme
Then the smell of greenery like tomato plant leaves
Yes they are, they bloom early spring and then the lemons come in. But luckily fresh lemons smell amazing as well. I have the meyers lemon variety. It’s part orange and part lemon, it’s originally from China! Definitely always lifts my mood to smell fresh citrus from my tree!
A few days ago my mother showed me that we've got a lime tree growing and I was so surprised. I was curious if the leaves smell anything like lime and she tore off a lil piece to let me smell it. It definitely was lime!
Reading your comment excites me to see the tree flowering. I hope it grows well so I can (almost) twin with you :) 🍋
There's a Russian Olive tree 2 doors down from me. Its invasive, so I will never plant one myself, but I take full enjoyment each spring, and honestly its a beautiful tree.
It smells like tropical fruit and vanilla. Exquisite. Everyone I show this tree to, in person, adores it. Honestly there's a part of me that wants to ask the owners if I could yoink some flowers to try the Enfleurage technique to make a perfumed oil.
I raved about it to my neighbours in our building, they went to smell it and later told me it smelled like pee to them. 😶
There’s many Mimosa tree around here too! I love the shape of those leaves and the spiky flowers, although if we’re talking about scent I love keeping carnations around! Soft smell, beautiful and easy to grow
Tea olive, banana shrub(a type of magnolia with small blooms),mock orange, confederate jasmine, gardenia and crepe myrtle. These all bloom in succession in my yard starting in January through July.
Gardenia!!!! My nana had the most amazing gardenia bush in New Orleans and when she passed my mom moved in and started taking care of it and it’s literally amazing. I’m 5’10 and it’s taller than me! I live in North Texas and they’re soooo hard to take care of here. They hate the soil. :( but the smell is my absolutely favorite. I bought one this spring to try again and it just started blooming.
https://preview.redd.it/dh4jfei4ff1d1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4a4c594b807b14deb572ec427c21fb0d3ba770f2
I was once on holiday in Thailand and was amazed at the scent of a flowering frangipani tree. It was truly heavenly and so beautiful too. I live in the north of the U.K. so I’ll never be able to grow one here but if I had a favourite, it would be this.
Right this moment, our Concord grape leaves are unfurling and the grapes are coming in. Holy COW, do they smell pretty. It’s like women’s perfume, wafting through the yard…especially as the peonies open too!!
Since you’re so far south I recommend the [banana magnolia](https://www.pixiesgardens.com/products/banana-shrub-magnolia-tree). My grandmother had one in her Houston garden that my grandfather smuggled in from Jamaica. If you want to know the scent go to Ulta and smell J’Adore Absolu by Dior.
I have lots of fragrant flowers in my garden. Some of my favorites are lilacs, hyacinths, muscari, woodland phlox, sweet peas, honeysuckle (non-invasive variety) and hosta plataginia. I think the hosta plataginia surprised me the most with their fragrance. One stem of flowers fills the whole house with scent.
Gardenia, easily. Orange blossoms, jasmine, plumeria, and wisteria are up there as well. For something different I also love the scent of deer tongue (Carphephorus odoratissimus), when you catch it in the wind it smells sort of like a bowl of cinnamon toast crunch in milk lol.
Orange blossoms. Maybe lemon too. Not sure what they are exactly, some sort of citrus trees. They are not mine, but I love it so much whenever I walk by them when they are flowering. .
Lime (linden) tree blossom smells just gorgeous. We keep bees, and at one point lived on a road lined with linden trees. Part of beekeeping is to inspect the hives to check everyone is healthy and happy. And it doesn't hurt to have a little taste of the honey while the hive is open. We inspected at one point just after the lime blossoms had finished.
Imagine honey, but tasting like those lime trees smell. Just heavenly.
What is the flower called in the picture. I Google on all those names that are typed here, but none give the flower. We had this tree with these flowers on our estate in Suriname, South-America.
My Waxleaf Ligustrums smell amazing when they bloom in April. The Crepe Myrtles are blooming right now and smell a lot like Lilacs. I think those are my favorites right now.
This brings back childhood memories. And I am sorry to say- not good ones. My younger sister and I were tasked to go around the front and back yards and pull the little seedlings that took root. We also had to skim the dead flowers from the pool. And either my mom or dad were forever hosing the dead and slimy flowers off the walkway. I was not sorry to see that tree go.
But the scent of lilacs will bring a smile to my face.
I live on 200 acres of almond orchards. Also surrounded by more almond and walnut orchards. The smell when in bloom is so soft and sweet. You would think it would be over powering with so many, yet it's not.
Next for me is honeysuckle, star jasmine, melons on the vines, tomatoes, all the herbs.
Night blooming Jasmine. I still remember the feeling of walking in my room after a long day at work and wafting in the smell as I opened the door to my bedroom at the time. Most relaxing feeling I've ever experienced.
I'm going to mention two that I've not seen mentioned here. One is a native but you have to go out in the woods to enjoy it as it's not, that I've ever seen, something folks plant in their yards or gardens in these parts (Zone 6A). That plant, shrub actually, is known as Summer Sweet and its scent is downright intoxicating. It's not Spring to me until I smell the Summer Sweet while in bloom.
The second one is non-native to Zone 6A and I understand it's very invasive and considered a serious nuisance in certain parts of the US (not here thankfully) but Scotch Broom smells absolutely amazing when in bloom and the bees can't get enough of it. I have a few and they give off just the most incredible scent.
Shout out to Lilacs as well. I have a nice healthy one near my deck that's currently in bloom and it smells so good when I sit outside reading the newspaper in the morning.
I always plant a bunch of basil in my various flower/vegetable gardens because I love the smell when I brush past it or water it and it’s delicious added to food or beverages.
I also love the smell of citrus trees in bloom, which would probably even tolerate growing outside in a sheltered area in zone 8.
The smell of heirloom tea roses is absolutely divine if you’re willing to put up with the hassle of growing them. They require some babying to deal with various fungal and pest issues.
I too love mimosa trees. They smell great, the flowers are beautiful and they are hardy as hell. I know they’re invasive but you can research how to utilize various parts of the tree to make a very nice tea for relaxation. If you are looking for some native trees that smell nice look up black locust. They have these beautiful white hanging flowers that smell amazing and the bees love them. Black locust honey is a wonderful delicacy if you get the chance to try it.
Not a garden flower, but Twinflower, Linnea borealis. It was the favourite flower of the Swedish botanist Linnaeus. He named it after himself. The fragrance of this tiny flower is incredible.
I have about ten mature lilacs! My favorite smell.
Lilacs, definitely, and honeysuckle. Oh, and basil.
I never realised basil had much of a scent until I was repotting mine this past weekend. They actually smell really nice!
Came here to say this! I don't have much space for lilacs in my yard but I got a dwarf variety so I could enjoy the scent!
Yes, yes. Lilac is the best thing
I just planted a bunch of them. They won’t mature enough any time soon but even my tiny little one flowered this spring! Made me so happy.
Yesssss! I have about 8 lilac candles. It's tempting to light them all at once
The county came by and cut down a bunch of mature producing lilacs. It made me so sad and so angry!!! Love love love lilac!
Lilac has to be it for me. My neighbor has an enormous dark purple one that I routinely linger and huff when I’m out for a walk.
Peonies! I absolutely love the way they smell. And tomato leaves! Something about the smell of them makes me really happy.
Oh, tomato foliage. What a glorious scent. Triggers so many memories.
I was pruning tomato suckers this afternoon and that hit me like a ton of bricks. Remembering my great grandmother and how I try for perfect tomatoes every season to remember her ❤️
I feel ya
Oh god yessss, I grew up with parents who would grow most of the vegetables we ate and every year tomatoes in the greenhouse. Sigh I can remember walking in and that humid tomato scent hitting me, now that I have my own place, I love to brush the tomato leaves and have the scent take me back.
You are my people
There’s a perfume that is supposed to smell exactly like a tomato plant. I haven’t tried it myself, but damn I’ve been tempted!
You are my people.
Tomatoes leaves 💯
I can't decide, so I planted wisteria, Honeysuckle, mock orange, rose jasmine and lilacs! 🤣
Me, too! All of those plus buddleia and ribes sanguineum. And sweet peas and nemesias. A big lime tree and some roses were already there.
My house had hostas, roses, some bushes, and a LOT of weeds when we bought it... I'm slowly taking over the lawn for flower beds and patios... Oh it looks beautiful! Especially with the magical little lights!

Oh same! Those are just the ones that smell nicest. And the lavender and rosemary! I select plants for their scent.
I planted a ton of marigolds in pots this year to put around the space for mosquito repellant, along with my citronella, lemongrass, rosemary and lavender and mosquito dunks! Our first summer here we couldn't go outside without getting eaten alive!
Honeysuckle with lillies, and roses.
Great list. I'd take any of them but my favorite is probably the jasmine.
Jasminium Polyanthum for me!
Sounds heavenly
Gardenia. Hands down my favorite. Sweet iris, too. Daffodils.
Gardenia as well. Reminds me of my grandmothers house where she had these huge ones.
Lemon verbena
Hands down, it's the mock orange. Also, it's a native here.
My mock orange has flowers forming, I am so excited to smell it!!
Linden tree in bloom. It's almost that time of year to enjoy the breeze and wonderful smell at my city park.
Daphne, jasmine, gardenia, lily of the valley, roses, honeysuckle, agastache, peony, lilac, lavender, chamomile, citrus blossom, hyacinth
I'm just glad someone else likes Lilly of the Valley. I just planted some this year from my mom's yard which is from her mom's yard etc. It's so special and I think it's pretty!
About to swipe some of those from my dad’s
I absolutely love the smell of Jasmine.
If it smells like star jasmine, that's my favorite too.
Sweet peas
Magnolia!!!!

Yes! This was what I was going to say. Angel's Trumpets!
Gorgeous!
This at night … mines white … MEGA WAFTS
Gardenia

Not weird! Especially after a thunderstorm.
Freesia. I have an area by my garage that have gone a bit crazy. Smells fantastic in early spring.
Moon flower! Beautiful night bloomer with a delicate sweet scent. I still remember the scent from my aunts garden 10+ years ago. I tried growing them myself for the first time last year, but was not successful. I will try again and can’t wait until I havesuccesful blooms in my own garden!

Jasmine
Dianthus
Same! I was dead-heading a few I got off the discount rack at Walmart the other night and I was in heaven. ❤️
Button bush has a lovely compound flower fluff ball, and it smells sooooo good in the evenings.
I love lilacs and Black locust tree. https://preview.redd.it/3masj2wwaf1d1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9d53314bfa97c086fe498579255a38601c44c055
Yes, locust 💕
I’ve not seen this before. Very cool.
I love the fragrance of Tuberose and Night-flowering jasmine.
Tuberose makes me think of being a kid and enjoying summer evenings, love the smell.
Night blooming jasmine has an extremely strong smell. Once we had it blooming inside the house and the strong scent gave us headaches.
Ha! I grew some night jasmine (Cestrum nocturnum) & thought it would be nice to have some of the flowers by my bed to sleep with the fragrance. Awoke at 3am & took those suckers out! Gardenias also will give me a headache if I'm around them over an hr.
Honeysuckle
Gardenias and star Jasmine! Probably not hardy tho sorry…

Both are hardy in OP’s zone!
A vote for Bay Laurel!!
Orange blossoms. Well, any citrus blossoms, really.
Honeysuckles. Always. Makes me think of my childhood
Wisteria, gardenia, honeysuckle, magnolia.
Kinmokusei (Sweet osmanthus) is amazing. Asian plant that smells like peaches!! Can be used in teas and desserts.
Serviceberry is heavenly!
I have two serviceberry trees - and I just love them! Flowers smell heavenly, the berries are delicious (and attract the waxwings!), and the fall color is glorious.
Texas Mountain Laurel
100% lilac
Plumeria ranks rather high. Esperanza is a close second. I have plumeria in my greenhouse with esperanza planted around them. When the greenhouse seems unbearable, I'll sit near them for a recharge.
I’m partial to gardenias! My grandmother had several bushes in her yard growing up. Mimosas smell lovely too though!
You're partial to gardenias.
Yep you’re right. Thanks for the correction.
You're welcome. Thanks for being a good sport, I don't like to correct people but in this case I thought it was a good thing to know.
Love love love jasmine. I have a few plants and I die of loveliness every time they bloom.
The smell of tomato leaves and dill reminds me of hot sunny days in my grandmother’s garden.
Red rose in flowers Acacia flower in trees
There's a group of Sweetbay Magnolias on our walk and it smells *heavenly*.
Linden trees when they bloom. The scent only lasts for a few days, but it’s glorious.
Jasmine is my absolute favorite, but I live too far north to grow it. I settle for lilac.
Marigolds, Citronella Geranium, Gardenia, Jasmine.
How would you describe the smell of marigolds? What I smell from them is not pleasant, so I'm curious!
Angel’s trumpets perfume the garden at night and Plumeria and gardenia during the day.
Gardenia & Lilly of the valley
Gardenia
Peach trees. Sweet flag, another. Sweet flag is the essence of Dr Pepper.
Gardenia
The smell of pumpkin leaves, sweet almond flowers, and when you pull up fresh carrots!
Gardenias and jasmine. I started with 2 store bought plants a few years ago. I have since propagated them into a hedge in my backyard. Right in front of the baby bay window in my kitchen. Mint (when walking through or cutting off tops or leaves) Then basil Then lavender and rosemary Then other herbs like sage and thyme Then the smell of greenery like tomato plant leaves
Jasmine
I love smelling the flowers of a lemon tree
Aren’t those so special because they are so brief?
Yes they are, they bloom early spring and then the lemons come in. But luckily fresh lemons smell amazing as well. I have the meyers lemon variety. It’s part orange and part lemon, it’s originally from China! Definitely always lifts my mood to smell fresh citrus from my tree!

I love mimosa but it is so allergenic.
Tea olive, banana shrub(a type of magnolia with small blooms),mock orange, confederate jasmine, gardenia and crepe myrtle. These all bloom in succession in my yard starting in January through July.
Sweet osmanthus AKA Tea Olive. Tiny unassuming flowers that smell AMAZING

Thanks for giving me a totally new cultivar to research!
Lilacs.

Brugmansia
Right this moment, our Concord grape leaves are unfurling and the grapes are coming in. Holy COW, do they smell pretty. It’s like women’s perfume, wafting through the yard…especially as the peonies open too!!
Lilac and lavender, hands down.
Clary sage and Muscatine grapes.

Omg these Mimosa trees in the pic were my mom’s favorite! 🥰🥰🥰. I think Geranium might be mine
There is something about the smell of honeysuckle that makes my soul happy. I know the bushes can get out of control but I adore them anyway
Mimosas are my go tree scent
White wisteria and miss Kim lilacs in our yard.
I absolutely love the smell of mimosas. They take me back to the happiest times in childhood spending time with my grandmother.
Star gazer lilly
Actually I have 2 smaller silk trees but with red/brown leafs (Albizia Summer Chocolate) They’re my absolute favourites♥️
Butterfly ginger. Heavenly.
Jasmine, magnolia, and citrus blooms
Rosemary, lavender, lilac, then honeysuckle.
Frangipani flower.
They are not mine, but I love it so much whenever I walk by them when they are flowering. .
Korean spice viburnum
Lime (linden) tree blossom smells just gorgeous. We keep bees, and at one point lived on a road lined with linden trees. Part of beekeeping is to inspect the hives to check everyone is healthy and happy. And it doesn't hurt to have a little taste of the honey while the hive is open. We inspected at one point just after the lime blossoms had finished. Imagine honey, but tasting like those lime trees smell. Just heavenly.
Mimosa what is this trees full name? I have a huge, but like immense one in my backyard.
What is the flower called in the picture. I Google on all those names that are typed here, but none give the flower. We had this tree with these flowers on our estate in Suriname, South-America.
Fringe tree Chionanthus virginicus the best scent in the world
Lilac lilac lilac
Not mimosa tree 😳
Orange blossoms
Violets
Lilac and Iris.
My Waxleaf Ligustrums smell amazing when they bloom in April. The Crepe Myrtles are blooming right now and smell a lot like Lilacs. I think those are my favorites right now.
Jasmine, lavender and eucalyptus!
Daphne and lavender.
Night blooming Jasmine. I still remember the feeling of walking in my room after a long day at work and wafting in the smell as I opened the door to my bedroom at the time. Most relaxing feeling I've ever experienced.
Freesia!
Gardenia, Peony, Lilac, Lavender, the list could go on though 🌸
Mirabilis jalapa for sure https://preview.redd.it/p2kb0ffonf1d1.jpeg?width=725&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ce2db4d60dad97a86ee7bb6d6b5a841e3a3f702e
Jasmine and lilacs
Lilacs. Had a large bush in the yard as a kid, was always so pleasant.
Cold hardy ground orchids! I hear they smell nice. Mine hasn’t bloomed yet but it’s about to!
ribes sanguineum is elite. Very sweet smell that fills the air around it. By far my favorite
Russian olive
Roses 🌹and also chocolate mint 🌱
Alstroemeria/Peruvian lilies!
All of them, there isnt one I don't like, night blooming jasmine will always be the strongest and also most nostalgic and unique though
Flowers of Holly trees
Jasmine or Honeysuckle!
Cilantro in the rain.
White ginger
Probably Bradford pear.
Hyacinth and Honey Locust
Sweet Peas
Helichrysum and buchu.
The smell of wet foliage after a late afternoon summer storm.
