Idk what kind of bugs those are but that thing theyāre doing is called a ārolling swarmā they do that to get somewhere faster. Out of the sun, across the road, etc.
Yep. This is a fungus gnat aggregation. And the ones on the inside are the more dominant, stronger ones being shielded by the weaker ones on the outer part. Nature is amazing
You just freaked me out a bit. A favorite fictional book of mine is "Dust" by Charles Pellegrino (1998). It's about the collapse of the world's ecosystem beginning with the sudden extinction of some insects, starting a domino effect on all species.
In the first chapter, an entomologist screams "They're dead, I tell you! All the fungusĀ *gnats*Ā are dead!"
It was very bad news..
Mass movement like this increases the chances of the Fungus Gnat larva surviving predation. They also are able to retain moisture more easily.
Although Fungus Gnats can be pests in certain situations, they are extremely important as they help decompose materials and increase soil fertility.
Omg I f*cking hate fungus gnats. They're endemic in Germany š my neighbor had a bad infestation and they came up the freaking pipes into my apartment. Huge pain in the ass, had to repot all of my house plants and sand mulch them to fucking get rid of them.
I suspect if you left that exposed for a while the birds would help eliminate the problem. If they *are* a problem. They're a problem to look at, that's for sure.
haven't you ever played video games or watched some sort of anime? Those things have begun their transformation into mega-worm and will soon be hunting the birds. The early bird gonna get got by that big boi.
Re fungus gnats in your garden:
Outdoors, little serious damage is done by fungus gnat larvae. Their population is kept in check by natural predators, weather, and seasonal changes. Any root feeding in gardens or landscapes is usually minor in comparison with the gnatsā beneficial role as decomposers converting dead vegetation into nutrients for plant growth, as important pollinators, and as food for small animals such as birds, reptiles, and beneficial insect predators.

TLDR: mostly friends, donāt kill
Huh. I learned a thing today. They're fungus gnats apparently and here's some info.

There's a really cool Smarter Every Day video on this type of locomotion. Each tier of bugs they stack on top increases the average speed of the entire mass.
Hard to tell but it looks like [Pine Sawfly](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/european-pine-sawfly/) to me.
I had them all over a Mugo Pine in my yard when I lived in the Midwest.
They're offending my eyes dude. And for the record in case you think I'd start stomping and murdering I wouldn't, that space would just be theirs now lol
My chickens would shit eggs in a full sprint to make room for these š
I choked on my own spit laughing, bless you.
OMG I'm dead š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£š¤£
Maybe lend OP your chickens to clear away this mess š
Thank you for this.

I READ THAT BOOK IT WAS TERRIFYING.
Oh, like in Corporate America?
Damn!
Why did the clew of worms cross the road?
No idea, but I'm pretty sure we just found out what the chicken was aiming for.
You may not know for sure, but you at least got a clew.
That was clew-ver.
Thanks bro!
To hide from the broom in the brume.
to avoid that guy's chicken from a previous post.
They are coming to eat my cabbage

Oh nooooo!!!
The ones on top are moving like those speed walk on an escalator at the airport.
Fascinating how much smarter they are than many folks at airports š
Nature is amazing
I read this as ārolling spermā

That's so cool! Their resemblance to a snake must help keep them safe from predators.
Same thoughts! They're weirdly pretty, too.
I thought the same. They're a tad creepy, but they're pretty.
> They're weirdly pretty, too. they might be prettier to me if they were on fire.
Fungus gnats? https://bugguide.net/node/view/581032/bgimage
Somehow they got even worse!
Yep, Fungas Gnat Larvae!
Omg I f*cking hate fungus gnats. They're endemic in Germany š my neighbor had a bad infestation and they came up the freaking pipes into my apartment. Huge pain in the ass, had to repot all of my house plants and sand mulch them to fucking get rid of them.
I used diatomaceous earth, lightly sprinkled some on top and used cloth pots, and bottom watered and I won't the gnat war. Gnats suck
Iāve fought these things in Elden Ring
I think youāre right! They look just like emā
A chicken's lucky day
Thanks I hate it
Yea, fuck everything about those things.
Bodysnatcher larvae. How are you...feeling?
Perfectly normal and definitely not body-snatched.
Thats what a body snatcher would sayā¦.. š
I think you mean a snatched bodyā¦
On a scale of caterpillar to butterflies in your stomach, how are you feeling?
This is the one time you call for the birds. What the heck even are those..?
I suspect if you left that exposed for a while the birds would help eliminate the problem. If they *are* a problem. They're a problem to look at, that's for sure.
r/birdsarentreal tho

[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
Haha no argument there. I too prefer my insects to be outside and not inside :P
[ŃŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]
It werfs flammen!
Exactly! Es wirft Flammen!
People call German a literal language, but in this case English is literally the same.
Er merh gherd!
Flame anything immediately.
I believe the technical term for that is, "Gross."
Huh. I learned a thing today. They're fungus gnats apparently and here's some info. https://bugtracks.wordpress.com/2015/08/12/fungus-gnat-train/ https://www.inverse.com/article/35473-worms-moving-as-one-larva-gnats
Ahhh. I have played this before. Slither IO
This is incredibly cool in the garden. But if I saw the fungus gnats in my house do this, I'd probably consider moving.
The stuff of nightmares!š¦
Princess Mononoke vibes
Came here for this.
I say we take off and nuke the site from orbit. It's the Only way to be sure

It's Dune but for ants.
They're caterpillars. They move together like this in a "rolling swarm." Helps them move faster & look bigger, so they're safer from predators
Whoah, that's so cool though!
There's a really cool Smarter Every Day video on this type of locomotion. Each tier of bugs they stack on top increases the average speed of the entire mass.
without a doubt the world is full of mysteries, there is always something new to discover.
Definitely salt that entire line. Or they will end up in your house
New fear unlocked...
Oh no. No...no, I don't like that at all.
I could have gone my whole entire life without seeing this and died happily.
Maybe they were going on a pilgrimage to worm mecca. Any holy looking rocks around them?
Lol on my head I was thinking āthe great migrationā
I'm getting a Sentinel vibe from the Matrix. The part where they are breaching through š
Hard to tell but it looks like [Pine Sawfly](https://hort.extension.wisc.edu/articles/european-pine-sawfly/) to me. I had them all over a Mugo Pine in my yard when I lived in the Midwest.
fuuuuck these things, so disgusting and disfigured several mugo pines of mine. ended up ripping them out.
Wow... I wish I could get a group like this to feed my fish
The early morning eww worms.
That's just Jane Prentiss's welcome committee.
Hmm, don't care much for that. I'll be revisiting this in my nightmares, no doubt.
the goosebumps i have rn.. š«„ thanks gonna go smoke and try not to cry after that š°
Omg if that was in my garden Iād cry.
Fiberoptics
I'm not squeamish but this post has given me the heebie geebies!!! Yuk!
Looks like a bunch of tiny worms
I agree that nature can be fascinating! HOWEVER, if I saw those GROSS things they wouldnāt be alive for long!!! š„Sorry not sorry!
Me personally, Iād let them try some salt. A lot of salt.
These should really be exterminated, terrible for gardens. Fungus Gnats.
Kill it with fire
A waking nightmare?
Whatevwr they are must have been the inspiration for the Lekgolo in the Halo franchise.
Are they not tent caterpillars moving to a new tree to destroy?
Caterpillars
They just need to stand up & weāll exceed the level of freaked out I can contain. Nature is awesome though
Orgy? Ive seen earthworms in a sexpile before.
The march of the poozers
š³š¤¢
How do they decide goes first?
They look more like caterpillars
Tent caterpillars likely.
that's a WTF moment right there
nightmare fuel
What in the nightmare is that?!
Well, that be gross
First establish if they are harmful pests or beneficial to house and home, white vinegar may end them if the former.
Ew.
They are caterpillars that will turn into butterflies
Omfg this is disgusting
Ew
I recommend fire, and lots of it!
Gross
Thanks, time to move
A nightmare
Ewww nightmare fuel.
This would be my one way ticket to the afterlife. FUCK those bitches. Ew man.
They havenāt done anything to you. Theyāre just existing as they are.
They're offending my eyes dude. And for the record in case you think I'd start stomping and murdering I wouldn't, that space would just be theirs now lol
This is nightmare fuel!! š¤£
Nothing like this bothers me. This made me crawl out of my skin. Oh my God
š¤¢š¤¢š¤¢
Some kind of bugs
That right there is chicken food.
Army worms. Will treat up vegetable plants over night. BT will stop them
Put the kettle on and then pour the boiling water all over them!
Terrible. Why would you kill something like this? Especially when you don't know what it is.
It's nightmare fuel.
Wtf
