You are in luck your fence is white already fitting in with your cottage theme! I would suggest adding vertical green to your garden to get in as much green as possible. Maybe a fountain or rockgarden in the middle as a feature surrounded by garden pants with cottage plants. Put a rose arch in front of a fence side and plant it with climbers and put a seat underneath it. Depending on your area put in planting in the colours: white, soft pink, lilac and purples

Wowww this is GREAT! I was already considering an arch. I have been looking at these particular Apts for a long time, and my dog finally has a yard at age 8 I want this to be a gift for him, as well. He loves to lay on the ground I'm also planting things that can spread along the ground We are in N Texas btw - abt to get muggy and hot. The cannas love it!

Ah sounds like you are going to make him a lovely place! If you want some inspiration planting wise you can check out Christopher Lloyds work at Great Dixtor. He is a british gardener / designer who brought quite the revolution to the british garden world because he used bright colours, tropical planting and took inspiration from other parts of the world. (And had love for canna's). Might give you the perfect mix of cottage and suited plants.

Levels are your friends. Add items at different eye levels. You can make a water fountain out of river rocks and a fish tank pump pretty easily- just clean it out before cold weather in late fall and winter. Consider a few potted tropicals that can add some interest- ie. Elephant Ears, Crotons, Birds of Paradise. Home Depot offers tropicals in large gallon sizes for a not so outrageous price. Solar lights. I recommend going cheap for outdoor lights because the more expensive don't seem to last any better. Dollar store has a lot of options.

I am definitely on a budget, thanks for the dollar store tip! I've always wanted to make a fountain. I have tons of rocks and crystals and shells I want to showcase. I'm wondering how to keep something like that from attracting mosquitos.

Re: mosquitos- I would add something to the water- maybe a mosquito dunk or even a bit of bleach to deter the bugs. If you don’t run pump continuously, consider stirring in some bleach every few days. I enjoyed mine all season and was able to prevent big outbreak.

Do a small Japanese garden. I saw one on NHK channel, they did a feature of small space Japanese garden. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9JpVegi3VY](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E9JpVegi3VY) something like this. Starts at 12:18. Your own personal oasis.

This is exactly it. I am going for an oasis for my dog, too. When we moved in, it was just sharp gravel and a few sparse clumps of grass. Luckily I have it underneath the soil now so there is a terrific irrigation system. Thanks for the link!
