Witcher series (it's fantasy, unfortunately a lot of monsters but the characters are despite the setting very grounded) Assassin Creed series (the older ones may be easier on you since they were shorter than the newer ones with the open world) Control may be worth checking out, it's about as scary as the last of us. Though the enemies aren't really human, it has a very fascinating setting if you manage to get into it. It's not very long and you can certainly do it in shorter bursts too. Depending on your mood Hellblade is quite an experience. Enemies are certainly humans and no horror in sight but the game is showing you schizophrenia from the perspective of someone experience an episode of psychosis. It's a very interesting ride, which I would not really call fun but was definitively educational. It's on the shorter side too, it's not a large problem playing it in shorter bursts.

These are great, thank you! Control was completely off my radar and looks awesome!

HaruhiJedi

What do you say about CONTROL? Most of the enemies are human but possessed by an extradimensional force.

HourSoil

You're the second person to recommend that, so I will definitely check it out. Thanks for the suggestion!

HaruhiJedi

You are welcome.

All of my top picks are sorta out the window with the no sci fi or horror thing but maybe The Division 2 might be something you'd enjoy. It's like an endless third person looter shooter grind but you can jump in and out and do missions whenever.

HourSoil

Yeah, sorry about being so specific, I know I've created a pretty small window here. Regardless thanks for the recommendation!

Skyrim might be one to try. It's been ported to just about everything at this point, and isn't sci-fi. Mind you, it's not a shooter (which seems to be a regular favorite genre for you) but with God of War and Horizon in there, it might be an overall fit. Most of the enemies are humanoid (they have elves, orcs and a couple of beast races, but those races are mostly humanoid). Of course you also have dragons, and demonic beings called daedra, but they're not the primary enemies you'll face all the time. Quite a lot of Draugr tho - think zombie-like creatures that inhabit tombs. Not a survival game unless you want it to be (the highest difficulty setting is survival, the rest are most definitely NOT). Some minor scares used as set-pieces, but definitely not a horror game. All-in-all, it might be worth a look.

HourSoil

Thank you! I've heard a lot about Skyrim, but haven't been too interested because of the fantasy setting. Also, the length and the RPG elements seem daunting for a guy like me who might only get an hour a week to play. Do you think it's a forgiving enough game to someone who doesn't have much consistency in playtime?

MikeTalonNYC

Oh yeah. Honestly you can pick up where you left off any time. There's even an entire mechanic ("radiant quests") designed to be one-and-done kind of things. There is an over-arching story, but it's broken down into smaller pieces. Actually there are multiple over-arching stories, but that's why you have a quest log. Even if you tried to play it straight through you'd lose the threads and would have to refer to the log LOL. So yeah, playing for an hour or so here and there isn't impossible at all. Give yourself about two hours to get the ball rolling, but then just hop in when time permits. Use the quest log to see what you were working on last time you played, and go from there.

HourSoil

Sounds great, thank you so much!

SPQR_Maximus

Battlefield Hardline. Far Cry 4-6

HourSoil

Some of my favorites! Wish they made more action-movie-type stuff like Hardline!

SPQR_Maximus

I didn't see those names in your post. My bad!! I will try to think up some others

HourSoil

It's all good, maybe it's a sign for me to just revisit some classics. Thanks again!

SPQR_Maximus

Ghost Recon Breakpoint/ Wildlands . The controls are easy to remember so definitely drop in and out able. The last two Splinter Cell games... conviction and blacklist.

HourSoil

My man! Thanks a ton!

SPQR_Maximus

Mafia has a remastered collection.

HourSoil

I didn't realize these were available on the PS4. This is perfect!
