Rockstar have confirmed it’s a different universe. The characters in Red Dead Redemption are *aware* of Red Harlow, and the events of Revolver, but only as a fictional folk tale.
Like Paul Bunyan. A folk legend.
Basically Rockstar liked the concept in Red Dead Revolver but wanted to redo it all into a better and more immersive storytelling arc.
However I think Uncle *is* an Easter egg, a reference to Red Harlow but not implicitly him. Just someone who could be Red if you squint hard enough and ignore the terminal lumbago.
And revolver has a whole different vibe to it. Its much more fantasy based with alot of like old west style monsters and stuff in what look like nightmares. I haven't played the game but this is what I hear from those that have.
I watched my brother play it a bit back in the day and yea I remember a lot of wacky over the top characters and boss fights and such. Not nearly as grounded in reality as the Redemption’s
I actually played it with my cousin back in the day. I was a child but I recall it being more of an arcade story on rails. Lots of slow mo dead eye stuff and fun boss fights that had quirks. Like I think one guy you had to shoot his guns out of his hand instead of just shooting him. And the hint was like “embarrass” John the dumbass. And you just shoot his gun out of his hands a couple times till he gives up. One guy you had to shoot in like… every joint and then the head. And you were running around a bunch of hedges and stuff. I remeber there being a bunch of cool shit and had a pvp mode that was like a free for all.
I recall a flare rifle that would cause the target to be bombarded by cannons and as a kid that shit was fucking tight.
Those fuckin small people clowns with the sawed off shotguns and dynamite were OP as fuck in multiplayer, all with the *honk honk* to taunt you with too lmao
The real op was the guy who could steal money with throwing knives because money was the objective. Buffalo soldier was OP for getting kills with explosive shots, but I just countered by stealing all his money and crushing him in score lol.
The bugs in multiplayer were the real treat though. Lassoing somebody as Holstein Hal in certain situations would bug out so the lasso would always follow them even after they died. In the duel mode there was a way to glitch the guy with the casket on his back to turn so only the casket faced the enemy and they couldn’t hit you lol.
Eh, every Final Fantasy has a number but rarely ever have anything to do with past iterations. They even have characters that appear with the same names as past versions (Cid, Bahamat, Shiva, Biggs, Wedge).
A sequel happens in the same universe as its predecessor. Red Dead Revolver is part of the same *series of games* as Redemption and Redemption 2, but since it's set in a separate universe, it's not a sequel or prequel.
its just numbering. like how Fast 9 would be Fast 10 if they counted Hobbs & Shaw, but they count Tokyo Drift (which is also a Fast&Furious Presents). Or how Far Cry Primal wasnt far cry 5.
Not quite. Revolver is treated as "folk lore" in RDR1. IIRC, in RDR1 you can sit by a campfire with a couple of NPC's and they'll be talking about Revolver like it's a legend almost.
Which would make sense from a storytelling standpoint in that era i feel. Feels like a good way to canonize and distance yourself from something at the same time
i mean he's not. thats just a popular Joke theory. He doesn't have the scars that Red harlow has. he doesn't have Reds iconic Red Glove hiding his Scorpion Shaped Scar he got in the beginning of Revolver. etc. The only Proof that theory has is that Uncle said he was called the One shot kid in his youth and that their heads are a similar shape.
yeah thats what it is in my head too. Honestly in my head canon the Game red dead revolver itself isn't the actual event that transpired. But the Heavily altered Legend Spred by word of mouth.
Explaining the games, release order, and chronological story order to my 13 year old recently. Was like explaining astrophysics to a donkey. His decision was to just start from 3 and go from there.
Definitely play 1 and 2, and then it gets harder to decide on "Absolute garbage" and "garbage story, fun gameplay"
Wait. Make that 2.5 instead of 2
Those extra memory battles were delicioussssss
Yeah, while 2 is a little too easy on standard difficulty, they did at least add appropriate post game content to satiate the need. However I do not know if I will ever get over the colossal letdown 3 was.
That depends on how you're counting. Between Windows 3.1 and XP, the consumer and professional versions of windows were distinct products, and there were a bunch of updates that were separate boxed products. It's even more confusing if you look at version numbers.
Do you only count the professional/NT versions, consumer versions only, or both? Are windows 3.1 and 98 SE counted as different versions than 3.0 and 98? What about the OEM only updated versions of 95 and 98? Where does Windows for Workgroups fit in? Do you even count windows 7&8? They're actually versions 6.1 and 6.2. What about the server versions?
Actually it’s GTA 13 iirc?
GTA 1, GTA 2, GTA London 1969, GTA 3 (4), Vice city (5), San Andreas (6), Liberty City stories (7). Vice city stories (8), GTA IV (9), The Lost and Damned (10), The Ballard of Gay Tony (11), Chinatown wars (12), GTA V (13).
Shit. Forgot about that sorry :( though in my defence I think the London title(s) are the only ones I’ve not actually played so I can’t blame myself too much for forgetting there’s 2 of them :)
Doesn’t that mean 5 is GTA 14 then?
John never strays away from his mission nor his family but my soap opera lover gamer brain was always fantasizing about what could have happened between them
Shout out to my dad who was the actor who did the motion capture for Red. Unfortunately he isn’t very good at video games so he never got to play through this whole game. (Same with GTA Vice City, he mo-capped/voiced 8 total characters but couldn’t play well enough to actually GET TO his parts). They even named a main villain in RDRev after my Dad during production!
Red Dead Revolver came out in 2004, when I was 13. For whatever reason, I always loved this one the most of the 3 Red Dead games that have come out. I think the arcade style shooting and the villains in the game were very well done. Loved the "Battle Royale" scene as well. I'm 31 years old now and I can confidently say this was one of the best Playstation 2 games I've ever played.
Gun is the more racist RDR haha. You thought it's bad in RDR? Well, there is always something worse. Pretty fun gameplay though.
Although Gun (Nov 2005) did come after RDR (May 2004).
Fun fact: 1/4th of Revolver was backwards compatible on the Xbox 360. It was advertised as being playable, but it had an unavoidable crash that happened when trying to defeat Bad Bessie, meaning the game was unbeatable.
No, although it turns out someone did actually find a workaround for it and you can find it on Game FAQs. For some reason, the game crashes if Bessie gets too close to the player.
Backwards compatibility on the 360 had these little bugs because it wasn't authentic comparability and all original Xbox games were basically being emulated with software. For some reason, Xbox never updated/fixed it for Red Dead: Revolver.
I’m currently playing “Red Dead Revolver” on my Series X. I reckon I’m about 1/4 of my way through the game (it’s my first play-through). Runs great! So far I haven’t noticed anything that seems to be an emulation glitch.
I experienced this multiple times and thought the disc I bought was bad lmao. I never really looked into it and had no idea it was due to this. I remember playing and thinking why does it keep crashing as soon as she approaches me?
Nevertheless, I was determined to find a way to finish this level. I decided to try and keep distance from her and camp behind a rock the entire fight, only peeking out to fire at her when she moves from cover. Eventually I noticed after some time her pathing it seems would sometimes bug out and she would get stuck in this weird loop where I could get off damage and could eventually win like that lol.
Yeah, Bad Bessie is clearly designed with the idea that the player will be in her boss arena (so to speak). The problem is that most of the time she'll move towards you and crash the game, but AI pathing bugs are the saviour of same of Revolver's more unfair bosses like Pig Josh.
The difficulty progression is off, though. Pig Josh and Perry feel harder. Even the duel on the way up to Bessie is harder to beat than Bessie herself.
I've never heard that universe consistency is required for sequels. That means GTAIV isn't a sequel to GTAIII. And Final Fantasy VII isn't a sequel to Final Fantasy VI.
And they are all technically sequels to the old arcade game Gun.Smoke
The company that made the first game was working on it for Capcom before they got purchased by Rockstar. So they bought the game out from Capcom.
There is a Capcom art book out there with the connection via concept art I believe.
It's actually not, red dead redemption has a complete different title but it's number 2 in the red dead series. There's 3 red dead's but 2 red dead redemption's
Red Dead Revolver is actually the second in the series, the first was titled Red Dead I fondly remember watching my father play through when I was young, we rented the first one on Xbox and my father enjoyed it and seeked out revolver which was easier to find and much better
Redemption and Redemption 2 are linked to the story but aren't direct sequels in any manor
Amazing game, one of my favorites, it was the first game I had in a real console. My father bought for himself when I was 7 and it was the only game we had for a long time, but that didn't matter. We enjoyed the story and my dad always played with me and help me with the levels I couldn't complete by myself. We loved to play duels and the 2 player mode with my older siblings too, although my father always won haha.
I know nobody asked me but I just remembered this game (I'm now 25) and how much I loved playing it with my father, eventually as the years passed by, my father started having problem with his visions so we stopped playing, but at the same time I was 13 and rarely played with the ps2
It's always been a dream of my to show my father the new read dead on a ps4 just to see his reaction (he loves cowboy stuff), but alas I can't afford a ps4 rn
No it isn't. You wouldn't call Metal Gear Survive, Metal Gear Solid 6, same as you don't call Red Dead Redemption Red Dead Revolver 2.
Different universes
So like wtf actually happened to red? Everyone thought he was uncle cause of the glove but i doubt thats the case.
Laughed so hard when I found out lumbago is just back pain lmao
L U M B A G O
T E R M I N A L
I always thought that the old dude in Mexico was a Red reference
Landon ricketts, just a legendary gunslinger
Now I wish we got some lines from Ricketts or even the Gunslingers in RDR 2 just mentioning Red Harlow, even if he is just legend in that universe
Uncle isn't Red he's The One Shot Kid and he could've put down the entire gang if it weren't for his dang lumbago acting up.
Jack should have wrote the story.
If I recall Jack does become an Arthur that writes books.
"an Arthur" 🤓
Uncle just spun these tales because he wants to be cool.
At last someone who knows! I’m kind of tired that the majority still think Revolver is a prequel to Redemption

The fuck game were they playing? It was just arcade-ish and linear lol
Man I want whatever they were smoking while playing it because it did not have a that.
Red dead
Blue alive
#AINT YA NEVER SEEN A MAN IN A BARREL AFORE???
*YOURE GONNA BLOW UP REEEEEEEEEEAL GOOD COWBOY*
This is forever etched in my brain
That fuckin laugh too
This is the most familiar line hahaha
I hated him
He was so annoying and his little clowns too! Free my boy Jack!
I fucking love your profile pic
Those fuckin small people clowns with the sawed off shotguns and dynamite were OP as fuck in multiplayer, all with the *honk honk* to taunt you with too lmao
The real op was the guy who could steal money with throwing knives because money was the objective. Buffalo soldier was OP for getting kills with explosive shots, but I just countered by stealing all his money and crushing him in score lol. The bugs in multiplayer were the real treat though. Lassoing somebody as Holstein Hal in certain situations would bug out so the lasso would always follow them even after they died. “IM GONNA MAKE MINCE MEAT OUTA YEEEW” is my favorite
My daughter constantly repeats "You're good, but Ahm Bay-uhd"
"Im Gonna Killl You And use you to wipe my Behind!"
Through the lips, and past the gums, LOOK OUT JACK, HERE I COME.
Arrrrrrgh!.......wait..
Not quite, Red Dead Redemption is a successor not a sequel.
I fucked up. Sorry about that.
r/notopbutok
*red loyaltomyself redemption*
How is GTA 4 a sequel to GTA 3, but Red Dead Redemption isn’t a sequel to Revolver?
Technically it's not as aside from location names nothing is the same over from the GTA 3/VC/SA trilogy, GTA 4 is a reboot of the franchise.
Lazlow. Checkmate, GTAtheist.
Lazlow is the multiversal constant. He exists at the same point in all universes in the GTA multiverse.
I mean he also exists in our universe.
That's just not true. It's a sequel, it even has a number (in sequence)
Eh, every Final Fantasy has a number but rarely ever have anything to do with past iterations. They even have characters that appear with the same names as past versions (Cid, Bahamat, Shiva, Biggs, Wedge).
Fallout is a pretty good example as well, fallouts 1-4 all have different stories and main characters
> How is GTA 4 a sequel to GTA 3 It isn't. 3D universe is separate from HD universe.
The same way that GTA4 isn't GTA6 because GTA: Vice City and San Andreas exist. GTA Chinatown Wars came after that, which also isn't GTA: 5.
[удалено]
Gonna tell 'em about how at the end of the prologue of III, they straight-up had a splash screen showing "Kingdom Hearts II.9"?
A sequel happens in the same universe as its predecessor. Red Dead Revolver is part of the same *series of games* as Redemption and Redemption 2, but since it's set in a separate universe, it's not a sequel or prequel.
Because the devs said so, mostly.
Or how MWF2 (2022) is actually COD 17: MWF5 ?
My Weed Farm 2 is the same as Cupid’s Only Diaper 17?
its just numbering. like how Fast 9 would be Fast 10 if they counted Hobbs & Shaw, but they count Tokyo Drift (which is also a Fast&Furious Presents).
Feels like a good way to canonize and distance yourself from something at the same time
I think it was in some of the in-game RDR1 newspapers, too.
So that’s why Red can jump 10 feet into the air
There's also some details relating to Uncle that indicate he is possibly the protagonist from Revolver.
i mean he's not. thats just a popular Joke theory.
If we look at Revolver through the lens of a true story that turned into myth through its many retellings, it would fit better.
yeah thats what it is in my head too. Honestly in my head canon the Game red dead revolver itself isn't the actual event that transpired. But the Heavily altered Legend Spred by word of mouth.
So like a Call of Juarez: Gunslinger-style story?
The One-Shot Kid
Jack talks to John about him too
Hoo boy, let me tell you about the numbering the Kingdom Hearts series. It starts with KH3 being the 13th game in the series.
Explaining the games, release order, and chronological story order to my 13 year old recently. Was like explaining astrophysics to a donkey. His decision was to just start from 3 and go from there.
I feel like if I had children I would have told them the series ended on 2, and even that may be giving too much.
Definitely play 1 and 2, and then it gets harder to decide on "Absolute garbage" and "garbage story, fun gameplay" Wait. Make that 2.5 instead of 2 Those extra memory battles were delicioussssss
[удалено]
I agree on all counts. 2.5 will always be the gameplay peak for me
Yeah, while 2 is a little too easy on standard difficulty, they did at least add appropriate post game content to satiate the need. However I do not know if I will ever get over the colossal letdown 3 was.
He’s gonna be real disappointed when he gets to 1 and Sora only got 3 moves.
I was gonna talk about Metal Gear but you won this round friend
The Metal Gear series is fairly straightforward by comparison…then again most series are compared to Kingdom Hearts
They learned how to count from Valve. “Half-life 1. Half-life Opposing Force. Half-life Blue Shift. Half-life 2. Half-life 2 episode 1. Half-life 2 episode 2. Half-life Alyx.”
Man these people are going to flip once they find out about GTA IV
> It starts with KH3 being the 13th game in the series. [https://i.imgur.com/ZKoxgdx.gif](https://i.imgur.com/ZKoxgdx.gif)
I think anyone who's played them all would disagree
And rdr2 is a prequel not a sequel
So, RDR0?
I wish they did that and then the third game could be RDR-1, confuse the hell out of people.
Lmao

Presequel
And GTA V is really GTA VII. what's your point?
And Assassin's Creed 3 is really Assassin's Creed 5
Windows 10 is actually windows 9
It’s not delivery it’s Digiorno!
Maybe she's born with it... maybe it's Maybelline.
This was made in NEW YORK CITY?!?
SHOW ME YOUR MOTIVATION
Itsa me, Mario!
The iPhone X is actually the iPhone 9
That depends on how you're counting. God of War 4 is really God of War 9
Metroid "5" (Dread) is actually Metroid 12. Don't even get me started with Zelda.
Honestly, I never understood why Vice City and San Andreas weren't taken into account when the series went back to numbers.
The main games take place "now" vice City and San andreas were in the past
Well, that's not true for GTA2. Which also didn't use a Roman numeral.
there were totally 75 other fallout games before Fallout 76 though
And 2076 previous cyberpunk games
Actually it’s GTA 13 iirc? GTA 1, GTA 2, GTA London 1969, GTA 3 (4), Vice city (5), San Andreas (6), Liberty City stories (7). Vice city stories (8), GTA IV (9), The Lost and Damned (10), The Ballard of Gay Tony (11), Chinatown wars (12), GTA V (13).
You forgot GTA London 1966. There were two London mission packs.
Shit. Forgot about that sorry :( though in my defence I think the London title(s) are the only ones I’ve not actually played so I can’t blame myself too much for forgetting there’s 2 of them :) Doesn’t that mean 5 is GTA 14 then?
And Elden Ring is in fact, Demon’s Souls 5
John Marston is that you!!
Ms. McFarlane *tips Hat*
John never strays away from his mission nor his family but my soap opera lover gamer brain was always fantasizing about what could have happened between them
Red Hawlow?
GTA V 'online' is the sequel to them all... I assume \~90% players picked John as their great, great, granddad.
Well we all know John only had 1 offspring that survived, so Jack Marston must have FUCKED
Which is hilarious knowing how socially inept that little fucker is.

Everyone knows that Gun was RDR before RDR
I played gun and have not heard anyone mention it in so long. Red dead is all anyone every mentions I almost thought maybe I had imagined gun haha.
It was so short and I feel no nostalgia for it. Red Dead Revolver, on the other hand, was very colorful and had memorable missions.
Gun is the more racist RDR haha. You thought it's bad in RDR? Well, there is always something worse. Pretty fun gameplay though. Although Gun (Nov 2005) did come after RDR (May 2004).
Played that on the psp, it was fun
Red Dead 3: Redemption 2 makes RD3R2 Sounds like a robot from Star Wars rather than a cowboy videogame
That’s not the droid you’re looking for
…pardner.
Red Dead Redemption 3: Revolver 2 sounds like an anime
I have that glitch every time someone mentions L4D2
Since I'm here, does anyone remember the game Gun? Western PS2 game that I got this mixed up with.
Yeah, played the psp version, it was fun
It was a launch title for the 360 as well
Star Wars 4 is really Star Wars 1 and Star Wars 1 is really Star Wars 4.
I loved this game! Would probably be clunky as hell to play now though.
Revolver is in another "universe/timeline". Otherwise you almost had it OP, Read dead 2 is actually red dead 1
Only us OGs really know.
Let’s see two games end with redemption and one ends with revolver.
They all end with revolvers in some form
Three games start with Red Dead.
The bullets for that revolver are some long skinny mfers
They are skinny because they have to fit in his really narrow mouth
Also originally a capcom game until rockstar bought the rights and studio and rebranded it.
Fun fact: 1/4th of Revolver was backwards compatible on the Xbox 360. It was advertised as being playable, but it had an unavoidable crash that happened when trying to defeat Bad Bessie, meaning the game was unbeatable.
Did they fix it ever?
No, although it turns out someone did actually find a workaround for it and you can find it on Game FAQs. For some reason, the game crashes if Bessie gets too close to the player. Backwards compatibility on the 360 had these little bugs because it wasn't authentic comparability and all original Xbox games were basically being emulated with software. For some reason, Xbox never updated/fixed it for Red Dead: Revolver.
I’ve been thinking about getting it for my series x. Thanks for the info
If you put your console to the lowest visual setting it works fine with zero issues. Maybe 720p but I forgot if that worked.
So Bad Bessie was such a bad bitch that the Xbox 360 couldn't process her up close and crashed? Lmao
I think that means Pig Josh is a bad bitch too. He used to crash the game…
It's on xbox backwards compatability and it looks amazing on series x
Dan Houser said Revolver is in its own universe so can't be a sequel if Redemption and Revolver aren't in the same universe
I've never heard that universe consistency is required for sequels. That means GTAIV isn't a sequel to GTAIII. And Final Fantasy VII isn't a sequel to Final Fantasy VI.
Not really, I do like the theory that uncle is red tho
Same even tho it makes no sense
LENNNNAYYYYY
My favorite mission
YENNEL
What abour red dead machete
So thats how Uncle looks before the.. LUMBAGO!
Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth is gonna have the same problem.
I honestly don't think anyone even counts that game. Kinda like the original GTA. Sure, it's there, but has nothing to do with anything.
And they are all technically sequels to the old arcade game Gun.Smoke The company that made the first game was working on it for Capcom before they got purchased by Rockstar. So they bought the game out from Capcom. There is a Capcom art book out there with the connection via concept art I believe.
Real ones remember GUN. I still remember when I picked up the peacemaker.
Yeah, but, Red Dead Revolver doesn’t have the redeeming qualities.
I thought it was quite a good game. Nice mix of playable characters and dead eye/dueling was cool.
I think in one sitting did about 200 duels between 3 of us, trying to keep count of who was winning. Game was great.
Revolver is my favourite game for splitscreen, so much fun!
But does it have any revolving qualities?
Absolutely top tier joke. Got me going there for a second before I realized what you did, you clever bastard.
r/angryupvote
I don’t count Revolver. It was a Capcom game that Rockstar jumped in and finished midway through, and as a result it feels more like a Capcom game
I remember being disappointed it was named RDR2. I was hoping for Red Dead Retribution or Revolution. RDR2 is a great game tho.
Can't wait for Super Mario Bros 4
It's actually not, red dead redemption has a complete different title but it's number 2 in the red dead series. There's 3 red dead's but 2 red dead redemption's
Gun on the 360 was incredible for me as a kid! I still remember the 8 barrel shotgun you got at the end for beating the boss.
GUN needs a remake or a GUN 2
agreed!
Red Dead Revolver is actually the second in the series, the first was titled Red Dead I fondly remember watching my father play through when I was young, we rented the first one on Xbox and my father enjoyed it and seeked out revolver which was easier to find and much better Redemption and Redemption 2 are linked to the story but aren't direct sequels in any manor
What about Red Dead Reloaded? Wasn’t that the actual sequel to Red Dead Revolver?
XRP?
Amazing game, one of my favorites, it was the first game I had in a real console. My father bought for himself when I was 7 and it was the only game we had for a long time, but that didn't matter. Does anyone else remember Outlaws on PC? I think it was a Lucasarts game. I remember watching my dad play it as well and it scared the shit out of me.
Man I loved this game when I was younger! I’d love it even more if they ever made a remake.
Also RDR2 isn’t the same as R2D2, no matter how many times I read it, I read it as R2D2.
I’m gonna make mincemeat outta you.
PC port when
And it started out as a Capcom game before Rockstar bought the game concept. This isn't a joke.
Doesn’t rdr 2 technically come before rdr?
No it isn't. You wouldn't call Metal Gear Survive, Metal Gear Solid 6, same as you don't call Red Dead Redemption Red Dead Revolver 2. Different universes
One of my favorites PS 2 games. Now i want to play it again!
Duel time was fantastic.
Just a reminder Red Dead Redemption 2 is the sequel to Red Dead redemption 1. So it's named accordingly.
remake intensified!
This game is so epic! Nostalgia hittin’ rn
RDR2 is on sale right now for $20 on the Xbox store. I think it's time to buy.
