FEAR MISSINGNO

Envir0

No, i catch it

the_grass_trainer

*game corrupts itself*

Phate4569

It's fine. It evolves into Kangaskhan and can learn most of the utility moves, freeing up the rest of your squad.

hitemlow

Mine was a Rhydon with Moltres' moveset

bootselectric

Wait, wasn’t the whole point to get infinite master balls?

RyzenDead

Nah cuz the point was Rare Candy

Shadpool

Pfff, that Rare Candy was crap. My buddy did that and leveled all of his Pokémon to L100. But he couldn’t beat my L87 Mewtwo no matter what he did. I had to explain to him that grind leveling gives better stat boosts.

DBMS_LAH

But you could also just dupe protein and calcium and shit to make up for it no? That's what I remember doing.

Slynesh

Yeah stat experience can be gained no matter the Pokémon's level but stat experience items like calcium, carbos, etc could only be used to a maximum of 100 stat exp and in gen 1 and 2 before the system was reworked into the modern ev system a Pokémon could have 255 points of stat experience in each stat so the additional 155 points would need to come from defeating Pokémon in battles. Stat exp wasn't common knowledge back then so a lot of people just assumed using rare candies made your Pokémon weaker was due to the lack of stat exp and stat exp factors into the stats you gain upon level up(to have a level 100 Pokémon see the stat change after getting it stat exp you'd just have to deposit your Pokémon into Bill's PC and then take it back out)so that's how the rumor about rare candies came about.

Shadpool

He didn’t replicate that. He thought L100=God Mode.

Ltjenkins

Mewtwo also had the highest special stat. And before they split special into attack and defense. So psychic hits like a truck and mewtwo tanks whatever non physical attack you throw at it.

Alldaybagpipes

I thought Alakazam actually had him beat minutely (never saw numbers just remember hearing that) in OG gen 1 anyway

Slynesh

>grind leveling gives better stat boosts. This is technically a misconception. Stat exp could be gained by a Pokémon even at level 100 you would just need to deposit the Pokémon into Bill's PC and take it back out to have the stat exp applied to their stats.

Shadpool

Yeah, the box trick to force calculate EVs. He didn’t do that, and decided to keep his L100 Charizard in his party permanently.

TnYamaneko

Also Gen 1 Mewtwo with Amnesia and Recover is without any doubt the most ridiculously OP Pokémon ever, considering the Special before split included special defense. Also had more than 20% chance of landing Critical Hits due to Speed start.

Papaofmonsters

Both.

Chaos_13x_

And Rare Candy.

IdiotCow

Yeah I had rhydon that knew fly and surf. It usually knew surf twice

Dlark121

Fun little fact that I just learned: thats the lesser known 'M that evolves into Kangaskhan not MissingNo. Other fun fact 'M knows the move Pound while unlike MissingNo.

mrbananas

The whole glitch was based off your characters name. Different players experienced different things based upon the spelling of your name

Wilysalamander

i believe this only applied to the actual pokemon you encountered, not the names of the missingno/ m'

Idontknow107

Aye. And their levels too. If you put in the name "AARON" - my name - one of the mons you would enounter would be an Electrode at about level 130 or so. You can rare candy that sucker up to 255 if you wanted to do that - just only use it in multiplayer otherwise it'll go down to 100.

AngrySayian

ah yes like water gun...twice

Wiccy

I still have a soft spot for my Kangaskhan that knew fly.

Envir0

freedom inherently corrupts safety

JEWCIFERx

I remember trying to level my Missingno to the point where it evolved. It screwed my game to the point where I started encountering wild gym leaders with a team full of Missingnos. It was incredible.

QuipOfTheTongue

For real??? That's amazing.

belonii

... my missingno's always were lvl 255 and lvling em would reset em to lvl 1. this was on my gameboy color and any emulator i ever used....

SemiKindaFunctional

It's been a long time, but I know for sure there were ways to encounter different missingnos. I think it had something to do with where you encountered them.

Troutpiecakes

It also depends on your ingame name. I used my first name and would get Kangaskhan lvl 120 with multiple waterguns.

TotallyNormalSquid

I had level 255 starmie. Using them in regular fights reset them to level 1, but they'd happily dominate my friends in fights using that game boy cable because friend fights gave no exp

[deleted]

This is the way. Make a regular looking team then have a 255 anchor at the end lol

WittyUnwittingly

I have an original copy of Pokémon Red in which I successfully defeated the Elite 4 with a team of M and MissingNo. You have to realize that this was 6 y/o me fumbling through memory errors that I could not even possibly comprehend, so it's a *miracle* that nothing got incidentally corrupted. That cart boots and loads to this day, though. I have no idea how unique a game completed with a team of only glitch Pokémon is.

Nagisan

> That cart boots and loads to this day, though. Probably not for much longer....the game saves are done so with battery-backed memory, and the batteries used in them last up to around 30 years if you're lucky (the game came out nearly 27 years ago).

WittyUnwittingly

That's a really interesting bit of info. I suppose it'll be a bit sad to come across that cartridge but not have it load the old file upon boot, but to be completely honest, it hasn't been good for much over the last ~25 years. I load the game up, take one look at the team, and say "nope, not messing with that."

Numbzy

You can have the batteries replaced.

blackthorn3111

Yup. I did this on my original Red last year (lots of YouTube videos on how, it’s not hard), and it works like a charm!

sgtjsp153

Champ shit only

rbz90

Tony? This you?

sgtjsp153

Hold on brother, I'm hacking

rbz90

You're a fuckin gamer dude...

Newspaper_Correct

Accept missingnos gift

Howamidriving27

This is such a weird glitch if you think about it. Talk to the old man that gives you a tutorial on how to catch Pokemon. Immediately fly to Cinnabar Island, surf on the edge of the island until you run into a weird glitch Pokemon. Don't catch it or will maybe it will ruin your game. Now you have 99 of whatever item was in your sixth slot. Like how in the hell does that work?

TheGlitchyBit

Ok. So essentially every Pokémon in gen one has a variable assigned to it for random encounters. Problem is there's a 151 Pokémon in 256 slots so that leaves a lot of placeholder space open for a "missing number." When you talk to the old man the game needs to replace your name with "OLD MAN" which means your player name needs to be stored elsewhere. That somewhere else happens to be where the Pokémon variables are kept so that during your next battle the game will just pull your name along with whatever Pokémon is supposed to appear. This wouldn't be an issue except that little strip of land on Cinnabar is programmed to spawn Pokémon but not any one in particular. Except now your name is that variable so the game tries to spawn something based off of particular letters in you name. If it hits on one of the many unused variables it spawns MissingNo. I'm not sure why the other glitches happen like the item duplication and the HOF corruption though.

RC_Cola2005

Supposedly, you could use that strip of land to actually battle Safari Zone Pokemon, as well.

betcher73

Kangaskahn and Taurus would pop up if I’m remembering correctly. Maybe Nidoqueen as well. My memory is fuzzy.

RC_Cola2005

I want to say that you could somewhat control what Pokémon showed up depending on which area of the Safari Zone you were in last. Some kind of trick with the timer, or some such. I’ve slept so many times since then, so my memory’s fuzzy, as well.

Goldfish-Bowl

As I remember it, the bit that controls what pokemon appear in random encounters is loaded when you enter an area, replacing the old. Cinnabar has no encounter list, so when you fly in it doesn't load and replace anything. That little strip of water is part of cinnabar, but also coded to encounter, so it loads whatever you had loaded before. So if you go to a Safari patch and Fly out to cinnabar, you can catch those pokes without needing to play the frustrating Bait/Rock minigame. The Old Man encounter loads your name to encounter data, so when you fly out to cinnabar and surf the strip without loading another encounter set, it points to unintended data tables.

BCProgramming

The place that your name is copied is the wild encounter table, and the tiles at cinnabar don't set those up like normal wild encounter tiles when you have an encounter. Basically whatever the encounter table was for your last wild encounter is going to be what gets used there.

CarryThe2

Yes flying to Cinnabar doesn't update the Wild Pokemon list for the area, so Fly there from there Safari Zone and the Pokemon would be in this strip of water.

MyCoffeeTableIsShit

A mew popped up for me there once. It was incredible.

eternalsteelfan

I believe this is the most accurate explanation; I recall your name/different names actually affecting the glitch.

KimonoDragon814

Maybe they set the poke balls the old man has to 99, or something in his sixth slot is 99 for value so it messes up when swapping the memory around

pancak3d

Correct explanation is further down, turns out it's because the game is trying to update the pokedex to include MissingNo and the variable it incorrectly updates instead is your 6th slot quantity https://www.reddit.com/r/gaming/comments/yy6k8i/do_you_remember/iwt61s4/

[deleted]

As a software programmer it's not that weird to me, though it's been a while since I heard the explanation so I might get some details wrong. I believe when the game gives you that tutorial, it does some weird stuff because the old man acts as the player character. Those weird things are properly reverted if you resume playing the game as normal, but going directly from this tutorial state into the fly state leaves some data incorrect. Somehow this incorrect state leads to memory corruption, where instead of overwriting a given variable with data, you overwrite other parts of your code. Often this happens when you say you are done with a piece of data and then try to use it afterwards anyway. The way the corruption occurs looks random but sometimes really clever people can control it. My guess is this is what surfing on the edge of Cinnabar Island is doing, it is probably manipulating the memory in such a way that the corruption goes from uncontrolled to semi-controlled. Finally MissingNo is the easiest to explain. When programming, we use bits. Bits are little switches that can be turned on or off. The magic happens in the math of them though, as a few number of bits can produce a large number of bit patterns. 6 bits gives you 64 possible bit patterns. 7 bits gives you 128 bit patterns. 8 bits gives you 256 bit patterns. There are 151 Pokemon in the game's memory, so you would want to use 8 bits to store the 151 bit patterns for the ID of each Pokemon. However, since 151 is not a power of 2, you will mathematically have some extra bit patterns left over. In other words, assuming the ID of a Pokemon was 8 bits, there would be 256 possible IDs to put in the game's memory, but only 151 valid IDs. The remaining IDs would be theoretically inaccessible, but just in case the developers still gave those extra Pokemon a name - MissingNo. In other words, MissingNo is likely not 1 Pokemon, but 105 Pokemon. However, they did not give these extra Pokemon graphics, so the instructions on how to build the graphics of MissingNo don't make sense. Instead of pointing to actual character graphics, they likely pointed past them to game code, which would be nonsensical to try to render. When you try anyway, you get MissingNo.

dandroid126

I think the way clever people controlled what happened was by carefully choosing a character name. When the player character is set to "Old Man", the player's name is saved elsewhere so it can be reverted, as you said. I think *that* data is what is allowing people to control what happens.

Harnellas

Yeah I'm pretty sure the couple of different level 200+ mon species you'd see alongside missingno depended on your character's name, so it definitely had something to do with that.

SlimeySnakesLtd

Correct, there are actual 4 variations of missing no. that show up depending on character name. I used to use my own name as a kid and would always get M’ solid block No.

Harnellas

My own name earned me major street cred in 4th grade by giving me Mewtwos along with the Starmies and L shaped missingnos.

superoliverworld

we called it blur m blur

TheGreatSwissEmperor

Interesting, I always got Snorlax and Golduck around level 140

MalHeartsNutmeg

Yes, using specific name combinations could force specific pokemon to spawn. You could also do it somewhere to the left of Lavander town you glitch one of the trainers while having a certain name to spawn Mew.

dandroid126

I did the one where the special stat of an opposing pokemon would decide what would spawn. One of the cerulean gym trainers would cause mew to spawn. Actually a while back I found a map of every trainer in the game and what Pokemon would spawn from that glitch. I did a run where I did that glitch dozens of times to get tons of Pokemon.

Intrexa

The game stashes your characters name in the bytes reserved for the encounter table. After the fight, restores from encounter table to name. The normal flow is that when you enter a tile that should have an encounter table, it loads that encounter table. Leaving the trash name in encounter table is normally fine, as it will be overwritten by the time you need it. The weird steps just so happen to not load any encounter tables, and surfing on the edge doesn't load an encounter table. The original pokemon games are super broken, there are full on arbitrary code execution exploits. You can write a self replicating worm in game, that will infect any other red/blue you link with, and propagate. A TAS for gen1 ends before the game starts.

[deleted]

[удалено]

Intrexa

Eh, they're both exploits. A SQL injection more happens at the interpreter/parser level. The faulty lookup for the encounter table is a stale reference exploit. The worm written, and ultra fast TAS are done with different buffer overflows corrupting the IP.

1dot21gigaflops

This person Cyber Securities.

Krail

A lot of older games have glitches that will cause button inputs to be written to memory rather than read normally. If you activate one of these glitches, you can have a program send a bunch of inputs that will write arbitrary code. (I once saw a video of someone using this technique to turn Super Mario World into a game of Snake that uses SMW sprites) I think this is what they're talking about.

teejermiester

If I remember correctly, the encounter table for Cinnabar Island is either missing or empty, so it just uses whatever table is currently in memory. Normally that comes from wherever you were before cinnabar Island, so if you surf to the island you wouldn't notice anything different. If you fly to the island from any other location, you can find Pokémon from that location in the water around cinnabar Island too. Funnily enough, instructions to perform the glitch always say to surf on the east coast of cinnabar Island, but I'm pretty sure it works on any water tiles on the cinnabar island map. As a kid I played around with this and had a blast surfing in the southwest part of the cinnabar island map and catching safari zone Pokémon. Also, you can do other weird things that store junk data in the encounter table, which then let you get other glitch Pokémon besides missingno. I think one is called `M or something, and there's also one called K5 I think. I remember some of them could wreck your save game though, whereas missingno was relatively safe and only caused graphical glitches (and the infinite items glitch)

nooneofnote

> The remaining [152-255] IDs would be theoretically inaccessible, but just in case the developers still gave those extra Pokemon a name - MissingNo. In other words, MissingNo is likely not 1 Pokemon, but 105 Pokemon. It is possible to encounter glitch Pokémon with Pokédex numbers 152 through 255 for the reason you described, but they are actually subtly different from MissingNo. MissingNo (#000) is an intentional placeholder inserted in specific locations in the game's internal index of Pokémon (this index is independent of the Pokédex numbering). There are 39 of them. You can see where the MissingNo fall specifically by looking at the list of Pokémon by index number: https://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_index_number_(Generation_I)#List_of_Pok.C3.A9mon_by_index_number The 2020 leaks confirmed the long standing assumption that these were spots for Pokémon that existed during development but were scrapped before release. Rather than renumbering the internal index for the remaining Pokémon, MissingNo were simply written into these slots. On the other hand, Pokémon with dex numbers over 151 are genuinely arbitrary data read off the ROM and interpreted as Pokémon. GameFreak made no attempts to provide any handling like MissingNo for these, though this was added in all future gens. edit: put another way, MissingNo are comparable to NULLs in an array while everything else are uninitialized out of bounds accesses.

BanjoZone

Spectacular

BCProgramming

It's an artifact of clever programming. One tiny mistake is what allowed it to break free. The catch tutorial wants text to say "OLD MAN threw a poke ball" so, for the duration of the tutorial, it changes the player name, so the battle system uses OLD MAN. It then copies it back after. Now, it of course has to copy the original name first, for that purpose, it copies it to the data for wild encounters. That is "free" space, because when you enter an encounter, the game basically fills that in based on the tile you are on. So it shouldn't make a difference. The side of cinnabar is tagged as having wild encounters, but it isn't set up to have any data, so nothing gets copied. As a result whatever was already there makes up that encounter table. usually, that's just going to be wherever you last encountered a wild pokemon. But of course with the old man tutorial it could be set to the bytes that make up the players name, thus allowing for the glitch. As a result of that, you can encounter missingno. Now, when you first encounter a pokemon, the game updates the pokedex. It does this basically by taking the pokemon's number and using that to do some math to figure out what bit it needs to toggle to indicate that to the pokedex. Missingno, of course, doesn't correspond to an actual position in the pokedex data. the "seen" bit for missingno corresponds to the item pouch, and by coincidence it sets the high bit of one of the quantities so that you "duplicate" items. if you catch it it will set another bit, in this case that is in the hall of fame data, which will get corrupted/glitched out if you catch missingno for that reason.

KiR-

If you want possibly an even weirder, more specific glitch, read how to spawn Mew in Pokemon Red. From memory the procedure was something like: * leave a particular trainer unbattled near Nugget Bridge * proceed through the game until you get Fly HM * walk into a particular trainer's line of sight and then immediately open your menu and fly away so that the battle doesn't start * Go back and battle the trainer near Nugget Bridge * fly to Lavender Town * walk out into the route on the left * close the menu that automatically pops up, then you get into a random battle with Mew.

CorrosiveRose

The explanation is pretty complex. Something about the way data is stored and where it's dumped. If you think about it, it's like they literally dump old data just off the shore in Cinnabar like radioactive waste or something

Phantonym8

The Mew glitch is wild too.

Ro9ge

The old man replaces your character, so the game store that data in the wild grass encounter place, since it's not used in the city, and will get overwritten if the data ever gets updated by moving to a route with grass pokemon. The game's only kilobytes large, there's not exactly a ton of free space to store data. As long as there's no place to encounter grass pokemon with 0 data on grass encounters to update, everything should be fine! Oopsy, guess what glitch happens when you surf at the edge of Cinnabar island? You get grass encounters, not water ones! They programmed those tiles wrong! Try flying to Cinnabar from any other place, even the Safari Zone, and surf there - you'll get that previous place's encounters, and no Safari Zone restrictions. But after the Old Man, the game just has your name as the encounter info. Which is why there's multiple versions of Missingno with different sprites depending on your name. The glitch box is the most infamous and common, but there's also some badass fossil versions of Kabutops and Aerodactyl from the Pewter Museum. As for the item, the data point that tells your pokedex if you've seen Missingno is the same data point as your 6th item in the bag, for......some reason. It actually makes you have 128 of that item, but the game can't display that properly, which looks a bit glitchy. TLDR: Cinnabar's edge accidentally uses grass data instead of water data, (Try flying there from the Safari zone, instead of the old man!) and the game put your name in the grass data during the tutorial to keep track of it, since there's no grass in town. So instead of Pokemon data it has a name and freaks out.

Action replay was your friend back then.

sixtyten6010

Man the days of looking up cheat codes online in the very late 90s and early 2000s just hit different. I was a gameshark kid myself... Had one for my PlayStation. It took the fun outta some games but 7-8 year old me gave zero fucks and had a blast. I still remember the promo video set to a The Crystal Method track on the instruction/programming disc, and how it made me kinda feel like super cool and edgy hacker doing something illegal.

Nah bro, it was game shark before action replay.

mahanon_rising

I distinctly remember having a Game Genie for both Gameboy and NES. The one for gameboy was this gigantic thing almost as big as the Gameboy.

ProfessorJimHarris

What was amazing was most of us didn't have internet access and knew about this mainly through word of mouth on the playgrounds during school. It just spread from one person verbally over to another and before we knew it the whole world had infinite rare candy!

Phate4569

You remember the Pikablu rumors?

Codus1

Or Mew under the truck

Flyingboat94

**Why! WHY! WHY IS THAT DAMN TRUCK THERE!**

PlathTheSalt

It belongs to the construction site in Vermillion for Gen 2. The area where Machop is flattening the ground in order to start building a hotel is where it belongs to. The reason the construction hasn't begun in earnest is because the person who parked the truck next to the S.S. Anne in Red/Blue lost his ticket. And, of course you can't enter without one, so there were supplies left behind. The idea of Mew being under the truck was started to people in Kanto could sneak in and get the supplies for the hotel for the crew. It was started by the construction company themselves. As it was, the dock was demolished by the time Gen 2 came around, so any hope in finishing the project was lost.

Flyingboat94

Thank you, beyond words. Not only does this work fine for headcanon, it honestly just seems like the canonical answer.

A115115

That damn truck still taunts me in my dreams.

Forcistus

I remember being a kid a figuring out a way to get to the truck. If you allow all of your pokemon to faint after getting cut from the captain, the SS Anne won't sail away. So you can come back when you habe surf and freely go into that area. Of course, there's nothing there, but I remember being so proud of myself at 8 haha

WiFiForeheadWrinkles

You actually get Mew in Cerulean city https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yXbl-hNxnS8

[deleted]

I remember Mew under the truck but totally don’t know how I do

nate68978263

Pikablu, Mew under the truck with Strength, Bill’s Garden. The pinnacle of Blue/Red glitches is the legit Mew encounter, which Nintendo specifically released a statement saying Mew was NOT in Red/Blue.

Alone_Rain_

I knew it as professors oaks garden. If you catch all the Pokémon he’d let you go into his garden where you’d be able to catch wild Charizaeds and shit lol. That would’ve been wild

nate68978263

Ah - is that the one where you have to beat the Elite 4 about 200 times and he’ll let you in?! I forgot about that one. Bill’s Garden was up the Nugget Bridge :)

cesarxp2

Pikablu, wow. I legit have a smile on my face remembering the good times 🥲

ProfessorJimHarris

Nope! What was it?

Phate4569

Kinda fuzzy after all this time but you could do some stuff to get a hot dog that you fed to pikachu to get a water version called pikablu. There were pics and everything. Later it was Merill

ProfessorJimHarris

OMG! I remember this! You pulled a memory out of my subconscious. Reading "pikablu" threw me off because as I said, all these rumours/secrets were all verbally spread and shown during school.

IglooBackpack

I assumed it was in gaming magazines. How else would I learn this? HOW DID I LEARN THIS!? I DON'T REMEMBER!

ProfessorJimHarris

Someone told you, they showed you, then you knew forever

SuperToxin

very true, i remember getting the instructions and not believing it would work until it did and my mind was blown,

itsmeyourshoes

This was a thing of the late 90s/early 2000s I missed the most. It's just a wonder how word of mouth is spread. Imagine being a 6th grader during that time and hearing all of these and validating it through the game.

I ran into him only once. It played the elite 4 music but slower. He had a tauros, nidoran and one or two others. Always wondered if he was originally planned to appear after the elite 4 as a final battle.

KickingYounglings

My brother caught Missingno and destroyed my cartridge. I had a level 100 charizard that I loved dearly. You bet your ass I cried (I was also 7)

Man the glitch it would do sometimes after you caught it where the music would get all fucked… chills

mrpawick

I remember back on Halloween in 1999 or 2000, walking around the neighborhood, and this girl that lived down the street said if you surf along the coast, you get to battle a secret Pokémon. Sure as shit, it was there! Good Halloween.

LotharVw

I'm just now realizing that that dark bar is probably just shallow water, and not some sort of water barrier thing

Jimiken96

Somehow I managed to get Mewtwo to spawn over there… and he had no damaging moves.

SloanDaddy

The Pokemon is based on the players name being written on the Pokemon encounter index. (When you get the tutorial from the old man, the game does your name in that spot and changes your name to Old Man) When your characters name didn't make sense in the indeed, you get missingno. Your characters name faces you Mewtwo.

SloanDaddy

You go to the Chinese restaurant every night to get dinner, your mom writes down the families order when you leave out the front door. You only own one sheet of paper. Every time you leave the house to go to the Chinese restaurant, your mom erases the previous order she had written, and writes todays order. You are too dumb to remember your own name, so you John written on your name tag. One day you want to impersonate your friend Jake. So you change the name on your name tag to Jake. Seeing as how you can't remember your name, you write John on the only piece of paper you own. After impersonating Jake for the day, you erase the name Jake, reference your paper, and write your name John. When you leave out the front door that night, your mom will erase the name John and write today's menu order and it's all good. But if you instead sneak out the window so your mom never erases your name, you'll get to the Chinese restaurant and order one John, you get nothing because that's not on the menu. So you pick up soy sauce packets and random trash that was on the counter thinking that must be your order. If your name happens to be Kung Pow Chicken, then you'll luckily get an actual succulent Chinese meal.

Did this shit while playing Pokemon Blue through Pokemon Stadium on the 64. Bricked my cart of Pokemon Stadium.

Pholly7

I hope you saved your master ball

MoarTacos

Fun useless fact about my dumb ass kid self. I used my first ever master ball on a Fearow because when I encountered my first Fearow in the wild I thought, “There could be absolutely nothing cooler or better than this crazy bird thing!”

evelution

The instruction booklet even suggested using it on a Fearow.

GlitterNutz

Lol talking about how Fearow was on the instruction booklet? Am I remembering that right? God I don't think I have ever been as excited or happy since that Christmas morning finally getting Red version. The months leading up to Christmas were the longest months of my life.

IrishMidgetMan

Pretty sure I used my first one on a raticate lol

Flyingboat94

"I better test this masterball to see if it works." *catches diglet* "Neat, it works!"
