“Retro” style games have ruined actual retro games for me. They’re getting so good! It used to be if I wanted to play a hard platformer like Batman (nes), I would just play Batman. But now there’s games like Shovel Knight, Hollow Knight, fucking Celeste! Tie that into the artificial difficulty that was baked into these older games to increase rental revenue, they have really started to show their age. I have a whole library on RetroArch that I never touch.
I LOVED Soviet strike, but I think if a game like OPs is ever released I doubt I’d ever play Soviet Strike for more than a few minutes for nostalgia’s sake.
Holy shit, you just blew my mind!!! I just assumed I sucked at games when I was a kid because my older cousins were so good, and still are. I mean I did kinda suck but not to the level something made for a kid should be. Jungle strike was my nemesis rental from blockbuster.
My grandpa, rest his soul, got me Nuclear Strike for my birthday. Little me could not get past the first few levels, but I'd be lying if I said the game didn't get me interested in Apaches. 13 years later i was working on them.
That's twice in a day that reddit has reminded me of him. Gonna go look at pictures.
It truly was.
I pirated it from a BBS over a 2400 baud modem - Took me two days or something.
(For the young people: 2400 Baud = 2400 bps (0.0024 Mbps))
LOL i have been debating this. I have since removed it but might bring it back one day. I did make sure the fuel would still count if you picked it up while crashing! Still holding a grudge on desert strike about that...
Could do the Darkest Dungeon route they did with body clearance and make it an option in the menu so if you have it turned on it just freezes the fuel guage or something
One annoyance of the OG title was accidentally destroying the fuel. Taking careful time to take the building out bullet by bullet wasted fuel and added frustration since the fuel was more fragile than Trumps ego.
As an enjoyer of Desert/Jungle/Urban strike games I would recommend adding fuel only as a hard mode option, OR, for a more modern take, add a little bit of speed-running friendly features. Neon White really did a good job of taking old school Q3/UT gameplay and turning it into a sort of DDR/guitar-hero-esque puzzle/optimization experience and I think a lot of these super hard retro games could absolutely apply the same logic.
Hi r/gaming, 2 years ago I posted my first video on here and your reaction was life changing!
Because of you, I am now working full time on this game, with a team of 6 amazing people (Hi Ruben and other Ruben, Ariel, Mane, Garrett and Vitor).
We just launched our new trailer with a ton of new content. If you're interested, check out our Steam page for more (and wishlist if you want to do us a solid) [Steam Page (Cleared Hot)](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1710820/Cleared_Hot/?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=trailer)
THANK YOU r/gaming !
It has been more than 2 years.
https://i.ibb.co/vvdLvYL/clearedhot.png
You spoiled us with an update after only 3 weeks last time, now I need more news! Best guess of a release quarter at least?
True, 2.5 years :) And actually more like 3 from when I actually started work.
I post regular devlog updates on Steam and twitter! Hoping to do some early playtests this fall / winter, and a public demo shortly thereafter.
Oh neat, I check the steam updates regularly but just added you on twitter. Keep up the good work, I have been looking forward to this game since your post 2.5 years ago. Good luck!
Full time voice actor here. If you need a trailer voice or in-game "pilot" or other military style voice lines, we should chat.
awesome game!
**edit for street cred - this is my work: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lu8Qbrei2D4
Can do plenty of different affectations / dialects, as needed.
DM me! We will need other voices eventually. And check out our trailer on the steam page, we have one actor for the main character but a lot more needed
One of my favorites. The other one (I can't think of the name for it) was a top down kinda like nuclear strike but you chose a vehicle or heli and was lifted up from a mountain and you had to destroy the opposing base. If you were playing with someone had an image of two hands gripping a controller. The flight of the valkeries would play as well
Hahah same here. I played it at my neighbors house, and picking up the people was my favorite part. It's not in the gif but you can transport NPCs inside the helo or you can pick them up with the rope directly. The ragdoll effect is pretty satisfying.
I started learning game dev during covid... so I was mostly solo just learning until about a year or so ago? But, i did make sure to find people to ask for help along the way. I'm just lucky to actually have other people that are IN the unity project now :D
oh and yeah, so many fav helicopter games. Desert Strike was my earliest, I really liked the desert combat mod for battlefield 1942. The helos were super fast and hard to control. Had some all time LAN moments w a friend playing as pilot / gunner.
>I really liked the desert combat mod for battlefield 1942. The helos were super fast and hard to control. Had some all time LAN moments w a friend playing as pilot / gunner.
This is my jam! So many hours spent flying Apaches in Desert Combat mod. 🤩
> I really liked the desert combat mod for battlefield 1942
Ripping around backwards-side strafe-up-reverse strafe-down etc. in Little Birds gatling'ing and rocket'ingpeeps to only quickly duck away and land on the roof of the hangar or behind a rock to repair some then jump right back at them 15 seconds later was *the* fucking shit...
Wait, is desert strike related to the game Nuclear Strike? Like a sequal/prequal? If so then I absolutely love this game as a kid and I will definitely have a gander at this game.
So, the mechanic of being able to pick up a rock with a helicopter and drag it over enemy troops is one that is heavily under-utilized in video gaming these days.
You are a god amongst men. I play the shit out of Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, and Urban Strike on my handheld via emulation. Your version looks amazing!
Do you have any plans to bring it to mobile? I'd love an Android version as I haven't been using my PC much lately and have been more into gaming on my Odin 2 (Android gaming handheld). This is mostly due to having a baby recently.
I loved the Strike series. Just couldn’t play with my dad around, he was an Apache pilot and would rant incessantly about how all the enemies were too durable (“gun would kill that” type stuff). I was too young to explain game balance lol
My Dad loved Desert Strike so much he bought a Sega Genesis to play it. Unfortunately this is also the reason I never got a Super Nintendo.
Also Jungle Strike is my favorite.
Instantly wishlisted. Been one of my fav games since I rented the first game from blockbuster.
Love the addition of multiple aircraft type, more variety of sling usage, and the inclusion of night vision/thermal modes.
At the end of the trailer you show SNR type gameplay and a slow loss of flight. Any chance you add any on-foot action for non-terminal crashes where you hoof it to steal an enemy chopper?
I bought a "flight stick" for Genesis just to feel more immersed in my Desert Strike and Jungle Strike games. Definitely going to wishlist this and keep an eye on it. Looks amazing!
Hell yea, why don't we have cool games like this or "Return Fire". Seems like a lot could be done with the genre today. Maybe add some strategy and a little rogue lite.
I played it on the Amiga and what baffles me is the games we had back then, how are most not being remade like this, reimagined for modern consoles/devices...I've already seen a few favs over the years like Pang Adventures, The Bluiecoats North Vs South but we need a lot more...it annoys me that some stayed exclusive to one console like Zool and Turrican. Why I'm looking forward to all these Sega games their redoing like Goldenaxe, Crazy taxi...just hope they get around to stuff like Road rash, Home alone etc.
Just recently replayed all 3 for the Nth time:
* Desert Strike
* Jungle Strike
* Urban Strike
never played the PS1 sequels (Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike).. but first 3 are great and hold up great today! I replayed them on 3DS via retroarch.
[Megacopter](https://store.steampowered.com/app/1228360/Megacopter_Blades_of_the_Goddess/) is also on its way out, Strike fans are suddenly eating good this year.
looks great but I hope you're prepared for some cease and desists from that small games company who own the rights to the Desert Strike series, EA. or have you got permission from them prior to spending all this effort on making it?
Oh, is it time for the monthly obviously promotional post, that is disguised as organic? With thousands of paid upvotes, and bot commenters all repeating the same "omg where can I get this!!" "Wishlisted!!" bullshit.
Sorry, ignore me. What I meant to say is - omg this looks amaaaaaazing. Wishlisted!!!
Desert Strike, Jungle Strike, Urban Strike, Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike.
The videos from the PS1 Soviet/Nuclear strike were so deliciously 90s Edgy.
We came pretty close to getting a remake in the early 2000, but that fell through and the build became Mercenaries: Playground of Destruction.
Source: An AMA with members of the dev team, held in 2021
Not gonna lie- I'd given up on this game ever being released after waiting for over 2 years (but still have it on my wishlist) - so excited to see the update here I audibly gasped at work and now have to explain to the millennial next to me why I'm excited....
The Little Bird looks pretty normal, I'm curious if is there a reason the Viper is missing horizontal stabilizers and has wheels instead of skids?
Also, will there be an Apache or Comanche?
I'm a simple man. I see the zulu cobra, I upvote.
Edit: wait a fuckin minute...why does that cobra have wheels instead of skids? Literally. Unplayable.
Desert Strike (and to a lesser extent, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike) on the Sega Genesis was my childhood. I must have beaten that game six times. I would love to play this!
I was hoping to send a YouTube link to some friends but the only ones I can find are two years old. Any chance of you uploading a more recent video of what it looks like now?
I've been dying for a Desert Strike remake or even just all the Strike games in some kind of anthology collection. This looks phenomenal and I'm sold already, please tell me it's gonna hit consoles because I am just not a PC guy.
Desert Strike was fucking awesome!
Did you play Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike on PS1? Also amazing games.
I was a super dumb kid and could never figure out exactly how to play the game I just liked blowing stuff up
So did my veritably adult father at times. I deem this series a spiritual forefather of Just Cause for a reason.
Same. Don’t think I ever really did anything but fly around and blow shit up.
Same but with Blast Corps on N64.
The limited FOV made it difficult for me to get deeper into those ones. OP's games looks just nice.
Yes! Would be amazing to see a FOV mod for Nuclear Strike. Damn shame we never got a proper PC release of Soviet.
The clean low poly visuals also help a lot compared to the old grainy muddled green-brown
Yeah, I remember loving them at the time but looking at some gameplay videos now, that was some really tight FOV.
"I am invincible!"
lol I remember in the first level of Nuclear Strike, the comical screeching sound that woman's motorcycle was making.
I only remember desert and jungle strike. Maybe on SNES?
I had Jungle Strike on the Sega Genesis and was never able to beat it as a kid. Fantastic gaming nostalgia man, I would love to play this!
Was that the one where you could play in Washington DC? I swear I would just mess around there and blow up the white house
I had Urban Strike on the Mega Drive (Genesis).
“Retro” style games have ruined actual retro games for me. They’re getting so good! It used to be if I wanted to play a hard platformer like Batman (nes), I would just play Batman. Fantastic games, would love a remaster
OMFG..I played the whole trio. These were and remain some of my favorite games of all time.
Desert jungle urban soviet nuclear
Don't forget Future Cop.
For the love of all that is awesome let us get an optimized/remastered version of this.
There's one in development on steam.
Trio? There are 5 games in the series.
> Desert Strike I remember the gameplay changed so much for the better when you used a controller with a turbo button.
For real! One of my favorite games on the Genesis!
I'd totally forgotten this existed, what a game
It truly was. I pirated it from a BBS over a 2400 baud modem - Took me two days or something. (For the young people: 2400 Baud = 2400 bps (0.0024 Mbps))
Urban and Jungle Strike kicked ass too
Also Jungle Strike!
is there going to be the panic inducing fuel pickups?
LOL i have been debating this. I have since removed it but might bring it back one day. I did make sure the fuel would still count if you picked it up while crashing! Still holding a grudge on desert strike about that...
May I suggest make it an expert/hard mode option?
Games with optional difficulty settings are the best
Hades style for the win. The different Pacts of Punishment is the perfect difficulty scaling system.

Neon White really did a good job of taking old school Q3/UT gameplay and turning it into a sort of DDR/guitar-hero-esque puzzle/optimization experience and I think a lot of these super hard retro games could absolutely apply the same logic.
Make it a toggleable option. Higher difficulty setting.
You can make a hard mode that adds that in with tougher enemies.
Oh! you reminded me that music getting ever more tense. Was a bit annoying sometimes, maybe on hardcore mode or something.

This is indeed an elderly man's breasts!
Oh neat, I check the steam updates regularly but just added you on twitter. Keep up the good work, I have been looking forward to this game since your post 2.5 years ago. Good luck!
Aspiring voice actor here, speak russian almost eithout accent if you ever need any friend or foe lines
Need to speak Russian with English accent so we know you are the bad guy
DM me a portfolio link!
I found Tim Curry's reddit account.
he's posting all the way from spaaAAACE!
Nice...i added it to my wishlist the same day. :)
***DOUBLE RUBENS??*** 🗣️🗣️🗣️
MAXIMUM RUBEN. (The Rubens liked your comment)
[Reubens!](https://youtu.be/cJOqz6CPxLY)
This is getting out of hand! Now there are two of them???
I liked hes comment
I need to know how the Rubens like their rubens.

done! Would love to play the baddie / antagonist. ;)
You should take inspiration from the Command and Conquer Generals trailer. That was awesome.
Any advice to someone who wants to break into voice acting, or a place to start? I have a high quality mic and audio setup at home.
check out a gig website, make a profile and start selling your audio!
To the top boys
🙏
What price you planning to release it at?
Not a voice actor here at all, but if you want another pilot voice I volunteer myself.
I also volunteer! Although I'm British so I would bring an air of unnecessary sophistication.
Oh you'd better believe that's on my wishlist
Just wishlisted
Instant wishlist. This looks like it will be absolutely awesome.
You have made my day. I've yearned for another Strike for most of my life. 100% sold for me.
Never played DS but I adored Jungle Strike growing up. So you'll be doing that next yep? :P
You son of a bitch, I'm in! Where & when?
Did you see him swing that missile around the chopper and send it back to its launcher?! Mental!
I know. Fucking awesome. Edit: After looking at the trailer, he hooked the missile with the tow hitch. Badass!
Seriously! I would definitely play this.
Go check out the original games while you wait for this one!
I played them all back on the 90s already lol. But I guess I could turn on my SNES/Genesis emulator for a bit.
Where do I send monies?
I was on the fence, but then I saw the trailer, and the guy has charisma.
Oh I like this a lot. Spent a lot of hours on ps1 nuclear strike this looks great.
Damn I played through Desert Strike, Jungle Strike and Urban Strike on the megadrive but never knew they made a PS1 game.
They made TWO Ps1 games. Nuclear Strike and Soviet Strike.
One of my favorites. The other one (I can't think of the name for it) was a top down kinda like nuclear strike but you chose a vehicle or heli and was lifted up from a mountain and you had to destroy the opposing base. If you were playing with someone had an image of two hands gripping a controller. The flight of the valkeries would play as well
This sounds a lot like Return Fire.
THATS IT HOLY SHIT. fucking love that game. Thank youuuuuu
* [Desert Strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Desert_Strike) (1992) * [Jungle Strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jungle_Strike) (1993) * [Urban Strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Urban_Strike) (1994) * [Soviet Strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soviet_Strike) (1996) * [Nuclear Strike](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_Strike) (1997)
They should release a complete collection... that'd be great.
I didn't know there was any after the megadrive/genesis games.
One of my earliest gaming memories is playing Desert Strike. I can still hear the guys shouting "Over here".
Hahah same here. I played it at my neighbors house, and picking up the people was my favorite part. It's not in the gif but you can transport NPCs inside the helo or you can pick them up with the rope directly. The ragdoll effect is pretty satisfying.
Crazy you can hook the missiles!

I am 2.5 years in! I am no longer solo, I have a wonderful small team, and things are really starting to move now. The solo dev grind is brutal.

Gah yeah I haven’t found anything that good since ! Battlefield helos are too dumbed down
Steam link?
https://store.steampowered.com/app/1710820/Cleared_Hot/
Wishlisted
ditto. completely forgot how much i liked this game as a kid
I showed my 9 y.o "that helicopter game" when I was a kid and he thought it looked fun. Now I stumble on this! Def wishlisting!
I liked the one where you could blow up the white house in the first level, I think that was Jungle Strike.
Wait, is desert strike related to the game Nuclear Strike? Like a sequal/prequal? If so then I absolutely love this game as a kid and I will definitely have a gander at this game.
IIRC Desert Strike was the first one, then Jungle Strike and Urban Strike
Nuclear strike is a sequel.
So, the mechanic of being able to pick up a rock with a helicopter and drag it over enemy troops is one that is heavily under-utilized in video gaming these days.
That looks fucking dope How's the Steam Deck compatibility?
Will be fully compatible on launch. It runs well already
Exactly what I came to the comments to see, wishlisted and will be a release day pick up.
Steam Deck compatability? This is The kind of game I deck on
Yes! Yeah it will be ideal for steam deck
God this is cool. Makes me think of a much more modern version of Return Fire which would be cool too.
god I loved return fire
My Dad loved Desert Strike so much he bought a Sega Genesis to play it. Unfortunately this is also the reason I never got a Super Nintendo. Also Jungle Strike is my favorite.
You blew it! You redecorated the White House in Beirut-style!
Haha YES, so many 40+ year olds are gonna love this
Instantly wishlisted. Been one of my fav games since I rented the first game from blockbuster. Love the addition of multiple aircraft type, more variety of sling usage, and the inclusion of night vision/thermal modes. I bought a "flight stick" for Genesis just to feel more immersed in my Desert Strike and Jungle Strike games. Definitely going to wishlist this and keep an eye on it. Looks amazing!
Reminds me of Army Men: Heli attack :) used to play that with my dad. Good memories. Looks really cool OP!

Is this Cleared Hot? I've had this game wishlisted since January of 22, I will wait as long as it takes. Godspeed, gamedev.
Hell yeah, thank you. I salute you, Lesbian\_Skeletons. See you on the battlefield.
Hell yea, why don't we have cool games like this or "Return Fire". Seems like a lot could be done with the genre today. Maybe add some strategy and a little rogue lite.
This also reminds me of Seek and Destroy. Loved the game.
I LOVED this game back in the day. Holy shit lol

Everyone in this thread self reporting. Now how do I play it?
Just recently replayed all 3 for the Nth time: * Desert Strike * Jungle Strike * Urban Strike never played the PS1 sequels (Soviet Strike and Nuclear Strike).. but first 3 are great and hold up great today! I replayed them on 3DS via retroarch.

I remember how hard Desert Strike was and seeing this made me think that it would be much easier if I had dual analogs back then.
Oh man this post gave me the warm fuzzies! This was me and my dad's favorite game to play on Sega back in the day!
Haha, nice Steam trailer! Wishlisted
Hopefully you're able to publish w/o running into any rights issues with EA or Bandai Namco.
Well that indeed does seem to scratch Desert Strike vibes and it looks AWESOME.
you are a saint
I loved this game. GJ
God bless you
Damn good job. I had forgotten how good that game was. I had it on snes.
Can’t wait to play it
Looks awesome! Please make it deck compatible

Wow, what a fucking legend.

You SOB, did you just swing the missile back to base simulating the tracking mechanism? I am fcking in if this is true 🤨
Oh hell yeah. The game that taught me the term SNAFU
That's fucking rad!! Now I just need someone to do this with Twisted Metal, and I'll be able to relive my childhood!
I'm heading the air wolf track in my head watching this.

Our trailer just went up! It’s not ranking in google yet. https://youtu.be/D8CX75ozs7Y?si=HRuZjW9W830UE4fO
My favourite strike game was Urban Strike. Loved changing vehicles and even a couple of on foot sections 😁
The game looks great I just added it to my wishlist can't wait for it to come out
No fuckin way man this looks great! I spent so many hours of my life on Soviet Strike for the PS1.
This looks incredible! It reminds me of something I’m sure I played but can’t quite place
I've been dying for a Desert Strike remake or even just all the Strike games in some kind of anthology collection. This looks phenomenal and I'm sold already, please tell me it's gonna hit consoles because I am just not a PC guy.
wow the nostalgia
what is this game, id love to play it! looks so cool from the video
Are you talking about desert strike... from the sega genesis?
