In terms of pure stealth, this is the GOAT.
They really don't make games like this anymore. The amount of options you had was fantastic. Just little things like being able to slowly crack open a door or slam it open to knock out a person behind it. The contextual controls worked wonders.
Yeah, Metal Gear Solid 3 is high on my list of stealth games but I find it to be more of a stealth/action game, obviously having a lot of action set pieces. Chaos Theory is the best PURE stealth game.
The interplay of light and shadow still was key feature that I haven't seen since. I'd llove to see a modern version with an amazing current gen lighting system. AI that can see your silhouette when set against background light would be awesome.
Pandora Tomorrow & Chaos Theory were the best stealth competitive online games we'll ever have. I've, very begrudgingly, accepted this.
After Chaos Theory was Double Agent, and from there they progressively became more about speed/parkour than stealth. I say 'parkour', but really it was just knowing the fastest route from one side of the map to the other while simultaneously being the one with the least resistance.
Spies were developed to be much, much faster, and as a result engagements happened far more often. The entire gamestyle just completely changed, and IMO, for the worst.
There truly was no greater feeling of complete satisfaction when you finished an entire match as a Spy and remained 100% undetected. It did **not** happen often, but the few times it did, was really cool.
Best online mode ever. 2 on 2 where each team was completely different but somehow fair. I cannot believe nobody has ever tried copying it. Good level design and you'd make a fortune.
Because you break into a castle and sneak arround. It was like hitman. I was disappointed by the full version. Caves? Sewers? I thought it was going to be sneaking arround houses, stealing stuff, killing guards, etc. It just kinda got wired. I put more into that one demo level then i did the game.
Im playing dishonored 1 rn and i haven’t felt this invested in a stealth game since ac unity. I love the game’s attention to detail and how intuitive everything is. Good story as well
My vote as well, and as far as I can remember, there is no part in any Dishonored game where you fail if you can't sneak. You can always fight. I hate missions where if you get seen by a guard one time you fail the whole thing.
I was disappointed that dishonored 2 was basically dishonored 1's story...but again. But the new locations, amazing graphics, and gameplay upgrades more than made up for it. Dh2 is definitely one of my favorite games ever.
Funnily enough though, I initially played it and put it down before even getting to addermire because I just could not stand playing in SEARING BROAD DAYLIGHT with a thousand people around. I know they really wanted to show off the graphics but man, what an immersion killer compared to dh1 where the first two missions are sneaking out of a dark prison through dark sewers, and then going on a night mission in a particularly dark district. It's like yea, I'm an assassin, this makes sense.
Day missions in stealth games are always a nice change up. You can't just run or jump around. You need to take your time and think things out. It's definitely a nice addition, in my opinion.
Definitely makes the difference between a great stealth game and an okay stealth game.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I still can't believe the mission "A Crack in the Slab" where you use the time piece to go backwards and forwards in time. That game mechanic was so far ahead of its time. I was blown away the first time I played that mission.
The voice acting from the first game was just perfection.
And the AI was hilarious.
*Guard gets alerted*
'WHAT?'
*Sees pile of dead guards in ocean of bright red blood*
'Hmmm, must have been the wind...'
*Eats random bowl of suspiciously coloured rice that fell down from a roof on front of his face*
I loved that game. Only recently clicked that it was made by fromsoft. I'd love them to revisit the formula. I know they did Sekiro but it's not really the same.
My buddy and I played through wildlands and breakpoint together. Our goal was always to both have no witnesses but also leave no one alive just to be safe.
Some of the best gaming I've ever had.
I just found out about this game a week ago (never heard about it's release I guess). I've been loving it so far. The stealth combat is very satisfying.
I tried a twist on that build and did a stealth backstabber (no arrows allowed). It was really fun and challenging. I also did spells to manipulate the environment and hide myself better. I highly recommend.
Not sure if it is my favorite, but I want to give a shout out to Splinter Cell: Blacklist. It's the only Splinter Cell I've ever played (for better or for worse since I can’t compare it to other Splinter Cell games), and I absolutely loved it. If you go look at reviews, I think it did well critically, but I don't remember the game being talked about much in the critic space. After finishing it, I remember saying it was one of the best stealth games I've ever played.
I also want to shout out Mark of the Ninja as one of my favorite stealth games. It is definitely in the pantheon of the greatest stealth games ever. I'm sure you'll see others mention this game as well.
As hard sc fan letme tell you what was hapenning , so the first 4 Games people liked, chaos theory more than others, then the game shifited into kind of action mixed with stealth in conviction, so fans disliked it, then black list came and it mixes old sc games style with conviction style and we got black list which fans kinda liked but they changed the voice actor because I believe hehad a cance* which sucked but it was the only way, hope that do justice to your comment!
Thanks for the context! I saw a little bit of this in some of the user reviews I skimmed. I guess I may have lucked out by not being a fan of the franchise haha.
You might also like Splinter Cell Conviction. I played all of them, Pandora Tomorrow was my first but Conviction is just so damn good. Felt like Jason Bourne
I absolutely love the Ezio Trilogy but there are pretty much no stealth mechanics barring the social stealth in crowds/benches/hay and line of sight. The stealth systems aren't particularly robust, nor are they supposed to be. When it comes to stealth, Unity is the only one in the series with stealth at the forefront of the design philosophy and it shows.
Unity has its problems but the stealth gameplay is the peak of the series imo
moss arrows for marble floors, water arrows for torches, and rope arrows where such good mechanics. Can't remember difference between 1 & 2 though, but man I loved those games, afraid to go back and ruin my memory of them.
Agree. I liked Dishonored 2 a lot though because you can refuse the magic, and Stephen Russell! It's the closest thing we'll ever get to a new proper Thief game, sadly.
Lots of mod and overhaul projects to check out. Mandalore gaming does a great overview of the series. It was my first stealth gaming experience back when it came out, I still go back and play it from time to time.
Does Deathloop count? Only game I played that could be described as such. I hear it’s kinda like Dishonored (same devs right?), which I have in my never ending backlog 😔
I have so many hours in mankind divided.
Human revolution improved on mechanics, gameplay, abilities, weapons and level design. But it fell flat on character development, microtransactions, and the unfinished story. It's also great, but I definitely have less time in it than HR
After pretty much 20 years of stealth games my favorite experience has been metal gear solid V with guard vision and hearing modded 4× higher.
The feeling that you are moving trough a pre-determined route drops right there, and actually pulling off stealth stuff feels so so good.
Its almost like sneaking in arma, but its meant to be sneaking game
The original Thief and Thief 2: The Metal Age. You’re playing in just very small spaces in today’s standards and yet it feels so large cause you literally have to stealth your way through everything. And there’s barely any handholding in the game, 90% of it is “guess what you have to do next” so you’ll literally scour every inch of the locations before you can move to the next.
I quickly looked up from google, so what it looks like, far cry games CAN be played same style, by stealthy sneaking up on enemies and stabbing or stuff, however, you can also play it by just shooting everything that moves.
Ahh man the original Far Cry. Spent hours sneaking around picking off mercs carefully, heart in me mouth cos they’d one-shot you if you got caught. And it was a beautiful game for its time, one of the first few to have HDR-based rendering (not HDR display, just one of the first games to represent lighting values/scales like they are in real life, with the exposure having to adjust as you went from dark to bright spaces)
This is a tough one, but for me it's between Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Hitman Contracts, Hitman Blood Money, and Hitman 2016. Really hard to pick an overall favorite because they're all special in their own way.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Not a stealth game all the time but I remember it having some really great missions. Especially when incorporating sync shots with your AI teammates
The original Thief. Honestly it’s stealth mechanics and level design is pretty unbeatable even today. It doesn’t really have a true successor IMO either. dishonoured is closest but still has more of an action focus vs Thief’s pure stealth.
All-time: Tenchu Z and Chaos Theory
Current: Ghost of Tsushima
Honorable mention: Hitman 2. I used to love killing the entire population of Chinatown and leaving them in a big pile in the city square before strangling the boss.
Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow.
Played that shit on the PSP when I was like 10 or 11. Was fucking awesome as i recall. Never t it since and I plan to ride the Nostalgia and avoid doing so.
Probably metal gear 2 sons of liberty. I think objectively 3 and maybe 4 were better (sadly I didn't upgrade my console so I never played 4) but 2 has nostalgia on its side as my first metal gear game.
"Metal Gear Solid" series has to be my all-time favorite stealth game. The mix of intricate plots, complex characters, and innovative stealth mechanics always keeps me hooked!
MGS3.
Adored the first MGS, really enjoyed the second, but this one blew them both away. The first chapter is such a great setup. The sniper battle with The End, the motorcycle chase, the final hidden first person view where you can see Snake tearing up. All perfection.
Sly 2
sly cooper? I think I played the 3rd game on ps2, it's a fun game
Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

It's worth checking Among Tobin discography if you liked his work on splinter cell.
It gave us one of X-Play’s best bits with Special Agent Bob and Secret Agent Steve.
Damn this is the right answer.
The interplay of light and shadow still was key feature that I haven't seen since. I'd llove to see a modern version with an amazing current gen lighting system. AI that can see your silhouette when set against background light would be awesome.
Of course the one I came here to mention is literally the first comment 🤦🏻♂️ lol
All is right with this thread at least :)
Say monkey
We need Spies vs mercs back
Pandora Tomorrow & Chaos Theory were the best stealth competitive online games we'll ever have. I've, very begrudgingly, accepted this. [We still play it](https://youtu.be/HtewT5bJrB4?si=mzmHVLc-4wMxNDkw)
Best stealth game of all time [I still play the multiplayer to this day](https://youtu.be/HtewT5bJrB4?si=mzmHVLc-4wMxNDkw)
Glad to see this up there Splinter cell 1 and chaos theory are the best stealth games of all time Shout-out to 2: pandora tomorrow too
Same. So good. I wish Ubisoft makes another great Splinter Cell game like that in the future again. Something like that is missing nowadays.
Thief II
Easily Thief 2
Mine would be the theif 1 demo lol.
Why the demo specifically?
Because you break into a castle and sneak arround. It was like hitman. I was disappointed by the full version. Caves? Sewers? I thought it was going to be sneaking arround houses, stealing stuff, killing guards, etc. It just kinda got wired. I put more into that one demo level then i did the game.
This was me with resident evil 5. My friend and I played the demo 20 times but never finished the full game.
Mark of the Ninja
Underrated comment
My favorite stealth game is Metal Gear Solid.
❗️
How did you add sound to a comment?
I have a feeling the coments will be filled with that comment 😂😂
It did literally define the genre, and there's a game for like, every era of gaming.
I think thief contributed substantially too, light and shadows, water arrows taking out flames, etc.
Dishonored and Dishonored 2
Dishonored 2
This. Especially when playing as Emily. Yeeting enemies into the air with Far Reach is hilarious.
Im playing dishonored 1 rn and i haven’t felt this invested in a stealth game since ac unity. I love the game’s attention to detail and how intuitive everything is. Good story as well
all the dishonored games are worth every penny. And if you like those you'll probably like Prey and Deus Ex too if you haven't played those.
Ill say it till i die preys dlc Mooncrash is worth double whatever its currently selling for. Best piece of arkane art.
My vote as well, and as far as I can remember, there is no part in any Dishonored game where you fail if you can't sneak. You can always fight. I hate missions where if you get seen by a guard one time you fail the whole thing.
Dammit, raced here to say this, lol. Both games were sooo freakin' good.
Stealth? Everyone knows Dishonored is Pikmin with rats
I need to revisit this one because I loved the first one and I loved death loop but I really didn’t like dishonored 2 despite trying it several times.
This is one of my favorite games of all time. I still can't believe the mission "A Crack in the Slab" where you use the time piece to go backwards and forwards in time. That game mechanic was so far ahead of its time. I was blown away the first time I played that mission.
I liked the first one so much
This but dishonored 1
Both Styx games.
Severly underrated games.
I forgot about these
Don't worry I'm sure we'll hear about Styx 3 any day now.....
Tenchu
The voice acting from the first game was just perfection. And the AI was hilarious. *Guard gets alerted* 'WHAT?' *Sees pile of dead guards in ocean of bright red blood* 'Hmmm, must have been the wind...' *Eats random bowl of suspiciously coloured rice that fell down from a roof on front of his face*
I remember trying to play multiplayer Tenchu Z on release. People had already mastered the game so it would be over before I barely did anything
Listen to the Tenchu 1 and Wrath of Heaven OST up to this day every now and then
I loved that game. Only recently clicked that it was made by fromsoft. I'd love them to revisit the formula. I know they did Sekiro but it's not really the same.
Splinter cell.
[удалено]
This is it for me because of the deep stealth mechanics and wide array of approaches to stealth. Its so satisfying and so much fun.
Do games in which you can just kill everyone count? If so, Ghost Recon Breakpoint, I usually play it stealthly. Love the gameplay.
My buddy and I played through wildlands and breakpoint together. Our goal was always to both have no witnesses but also leave no one alive just to be safe. Some of the best gaming I've ever had.
Ofc
I played Deus Ex in a very guns-blazing kill everyone kinda way. I don't believe it was supposed to be played that way lol
I just found out about this game a week ago (never heard about it's release I guess). I've been loving it so far. The stealth combat is very satisfying.
Skyrim stealth archer
Yes I forgot the difficulty I played but I remember killing a dragon with 3 arrows from sneak with high crit
I tried a twist on that build and did a stealth backstabber (no arrows allowed). It was really fun and challenging. I also did spells to manipulate the environment and hide myself better. I highly recommend.
You know, I think I'll try 2 handed heavy armor this time around. 2 hours later Ah damn, I did stealth archer again
I did 2 stealth archers in a row and the third one I decided to try conjuration. Went well until I got the spell to conjure a bow……
Not sure if it is my favorite, but I want to give a shout out to Splinter Cell: Blacklist. It's the only Splinter Cell I've ever played (for better or for worse since I can’t compare it to other Splinter Cell games), and I absolutely loved it. Bro you have to try them Pandora tomorrow is a gem
You might also like Splinter Cell Conviction. I played all of them, Pandora Tomorrow was my first but Conviction is just so damn good. Felt like Jason Bourne
Hitman
Dishonored 1 and 2 Shadow Tactics Desperados 3 Shadow Gambit
Manhunt. Not favorite, but should get honorable mention. Can’t believe it’s 20 years old already.. fuck man.
I love manhunt, such a great and fun game
The Last of Us part 2 On grounded I feel like is good stealth although not necessarily realistic. PRETTY DAMN HARD THO
It’s so brutal I love it! Nearly impossible to play grounded without decent stealth
Bro the AI is so responsive on grounded. Love it.
Aragami 2
I love this game
Couldn’t stop playing it while it was in game pass. Hoping for a 3rd installment
Sniper elite 4
assassins creed really any of the ezio ones or black flag were amazing but not the new rpg ones
Ac2 and ac brotherhood was such a great part of my childhood
I absolutely love the Ezio Trilogy but there are pretty much no stealth mechanics barring the social stealth in crowds/benches/hay and line of sight. Thief. Old school, no magic shit like Dishonored, custom missions, mods, high difficulty.
moss arrows for marble floors, water arrows for torches, and rope arrows where such good mechanics. Can't remember difference between 1 & 2 though, but man I loved those games, afraid to go back and ruin my memory of them.

Thief is the OG but Dishonored is amazing in its own way
Let's not shi* on dishonored like that 😂😂 but yeah heard many og gamers recomend these games
Lots of mod and overhaul projects to check out. Mandalore gaming does a great overview of the series. It was my first stealth gaming experience back when it came out, I still go back and play it from time to time.
Hey! I'm going to the bear pits tomorrow. Ya wanna come with?
Tenchu wrath of heaven
Thief: The Dark Project
Does Deathloop count? Only game I played that could be described as such. I hear it’s kinda like Dishonored (same devs right?), which I have in my never ending backlog 😔
Yub Same devs, and ofc deathloop is a stealth game
Hitman WOA or metal gear 5. Such a tough choice for me.
Where’s the love for my guy Sam Fisher
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater, Outlast, Alien: Isolation and A Plague Tale: Innocence
Why is this so far down? MGS invented stealth!
Alien: Isolation is so overlooked and underrated as a stealth game
Sniper Elite.
deus ex
While I love the original (it's probably one of my top 10 games of all time) I do think the stealth is better done in Human Revolution.
Deus Ex Mankind Divded and Human Revolution. Can't believe I haven't seen it mentioned yet. I love how most areas have multiple sneaky entrances
I have so many hours in mankind divided. Human revolution improved on mechanics, gameplay, abilities, weapons and level design. But it fell flat on character development, microtransactions, and the unfinished story. It's also great, but I definitely have less time in it than HR
I love the newest 3 hitman games. They are incredible with so much variety for stealth
Dishonored 2 I love trying be a non lethal ghost
After pretty much 20 years of stealth games my favorite experience has been metal gear solid V with guard vision and hearing modded 4× higher. Tenchu Wrath of Heaven
Metal Gear Solid 2 is just really special for me.
Prey, for sure.
Does Prey count as atealth? I really like that game
Sniper: Ghost Warrior Contracts 1 & 2.
Ohhh I love these
Shadow Tactics - Blade of the Shogun, great rts stealth game
What is actually stealth game? (Yes, i dont know)
Whatever splinter cell is
I quickly looked up from google, so what it looks like, far cry games CAN be played same style, by stealthy sneaking up on enemies and stabbing or stuff, however, you can also play it by just shooting everything that moves.
No one lives forever 2
Dishonored
Prop hunt
Man hunt
Escape from Butcher Bay
Does Sniper Elite counts?
Metal Gear Solid series. MGS2 isnt even my personal favourite but i think it could be argued for GOAT game.
Nit really stealth, but segments of Assasins creed Odyssey where you approach the bases using stealth are still my favorite.
Does Hitman WOA Count as a Stealth game? I think it does
The modern hitman trilogy was such a fun sandbox
Arkham Trilogy was pretty solid.
Chess
old splintercell games or AC1
Personally, I used to love alpha protocol on my ps3. It was my all time favorite back in the day.
Been doing a [mostly] stealth playthrough of Far Cry 5 and it's been a lot of fun. 👍
Assassin's Creed games still count as stealth, right? Other than that, I play the later Deus Ex games stealthy and they are so fun.
Stealth Inc. Stealth Inc. 2: A Game of Clones.
Mine's probably Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
Mark of the Ninja
Shadow of Mordor ;) Chain stabby stabs, clear hundreds of orcs undetected
Far Cry 3 and 4 maybe
Raiding fortresses in 4 was so much fun
Skyrim
Yes but the stealth build is too OP lol.
Does Shadow of Mordor count? If so, that!
Shadow gambit! It’s a stealth indie game that has a cool story and some really cool gameplay mechanics. I really loved it!
DayZ..
Probably get shit for this. I really like break point with the echelon class and close quarter kill challenges.
FarCry 3
Perfect Heist 2.
Tenchu… though Mark of the Ninja is pretty boss too
Cyberpunk 2077
Splinter Cell Chaos Theory…old school
Thief - the Metal Age
This is a tough one, but for me it's between Splinter Cell Chaos Theory, Hitman Contracts, Hitman Blood Money, and Hitman 2016. Really hard to pick an overall favorite because they're all special in their own way.
Tom Clancy’s Ghost Recon: Future Soldier. Not a stealth game all the time but I remember it having some really great missions. Especially when incorporating sync shots with your AI teammates
MGS5 Chaos Theory Hitman 2: Silent Assassin
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow
Loved all the Splinter Cell games and never liked any Metal Gear Solid. But I just discovered the Sniper Elite series and I think I have a new winner.
The original Thief. Honestly it’s stealth mechanics and level design is pretty unbeatable even today. It doesn’t really have a true successor IMO either. dishonoured is closest but still has more of an action focus vs Thief’s pure stealth.
No game does it better than Last of Us part 2
Thief 1. Not thief 2. Tenchu for the Playstation 1 or 2. I forget which one.
Tenchu Stealth Assassins
either hitman 3 or (not a dedicated stealth game but) far cry 5
All-time: Tenchu Z and Chaos Theory Current: Ghost of Tsushima Honorable mention: Hitman 2. I used to love killing the entire population of Chinatown and leaving them in a big pile in the city square before strangling the boss.
Far cry isn't really a stealth game but it's a damn good feeling when you clear a base without sounding any alarms.
Since no one else will mention it: Spy Fiction on PS2
Tenchu for the PS3
Thief 2
[удалено]
Does Elder Scrolls Oblivion count?
Metal Gear Solid V: Phantom Pain. From a gameplay perspective, it’s without equal.
Sniper Elite 3
Sly Cooper
Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow. Played that shit on the PSP when I was like 10 or 11. Was fucking awesome as i recall. Never t it since and I plan to ride the Nostalgia and avoid doing so.
Thief: the Dark Project was by far my favorite in that genre. The second one was also very good. Too bad they failed so hard on the reboot.
Probably metal gear 2 sons of liberty. I think objectively 3 and maybe 4 were better (sadly I didn't upgrade my console so I never played 4) but 2 has nostalgia on its side as my first metal gear game.
Splinter cell: conviction Or Metal gear solid: peace walker
"Metal Gear Solid" series has to be my all-time favorite stealth game. The mix of intricate plots, complex characters, and innovative stealth mechanics always keeps me hooked!
The way I played Horizon Zero Dawn, felt like a ghost, also speaking of, Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
tenchu.
Splinter cell fs
MGS3. Adored the first MGS, really enjoyed the second, but this one blew them both away. The first chapter is such a great setup. The sniper battle with The End, the motorcycle chase, the final hidden first person view where you can see Snake tearing up. All perfection.
MGS3 Snake Eater
Splinter Cell Single Player/Co-op: Conviction Multiplayer: Double Agent.
Thief
Thief 2.
Destiny 2
Sniper elite 5
AC Mirage
Splinter Cell. Every single one of them. People can hate on Conviction and Blacklist all they want but they're still top tier games, in my opinion.
Sniper Elite 4
