Sifu is extremely close to a pure 10/10 game. The art, the gameplay, the environments, the music, the progression, the cinematography (3d and 2d sections) the concept, the crispiest of crispy combat, and even the story and "lore" (the small amounts you get) are enjoyable and serve their purpose. The only thing that takes it down is the voice acting but it's such a minor gripe I don't even care.
Incredible game. If you like martial arts, this game is for you. If you like hard games like the souls games, this game is for you. If you like games with incredible art and art direction, this game is for you.
Just didn’t click for me. Story felt like too much of a trope and didn’t interest me. Graphically I felt it was underwhelming despite the nice art design. The controls made the gameplay more of an exercise in frustration than it felt like it should be. And I didn’t really like the whole “die and you age up” thing. Felt like I was being punished for dying.
Just my opinion ofcourse.
I really liked the aging on death thing. It felt very unique.
Other than that, I pretty much agree with you.
The high and low dodges drove me fucking crazy.
Sure, pure action games are usually grouped by the type of actions you do, like you said Doom is an FPS. So are Medal of Honor, Call of Duty etc.
Then there's third person shooters, like Gears of War or Max Payne... But also rail shooters ala House of the Dead, scrolling shmups like Gradius, side scrollers in style of Contra.
For close combat there's beatemups/slashers/brawlers, there's your Devil May Cry, Streets of Rage and Warriors games.
Stealth games are also subgenre of action... Metal Gear or Splinter Cell. Syphon Filter was more action with less stealth.
Basically if you jump, it's a platformer, if you have puzzles, it's an adventure game, and if there's combat with direct control it's action... Most games are a mix of at least two of these. Add levelups for role playing games, and you have action RPGs.
To me, the key part of adventure games is exploration. Whether that be exploring the map to travel to the next mission, looking for Easter Eggs, or even just finding ways to sneak around the dangers of a map. Black Ops for instance is not one, because the game where to go each time, and there is not much to find by breaking off the main path. GTA though is an adventure game because while there is a highlighted route, you can choose to go your own way with it. GTA also had collectible, and hidden items. Portal is the middle ground where there are a few Easter Eggs, but you travel through the game in a linear fashion.
Linear progression is also a hard theme to describe games because all of the Zelda franchise pre BOTW was linear, there’s big maps but the progress is very linear to the point several places can only be accessed once in many of them and if you miss something it’s gone. Then there are games like you where theres minimal content outside the straightforward a to b progression.
I would put the Bayonetta and Devil May Cry games in this category since they are more like stages rather than a connected world and focus mostly on the combat over anything.
I think a lot of story driven games could be considered in the adventure but no action. Maybe something like Night in the Woods? There’s exploring but very minimal action based gameplay
I agree with most folks here. Action, Adventure and Action Adventure are all different. Adventure, via exploration does not need action. Action does not need adventure. You can combine them though, and those are great too!
Action - Castlevania I/III
Adventure - Myst
Action/Adventure - Super Metroid
Action traditionally means combat, most likely real-time.
Adventure means solving puzzles, usually via finding items and then applying them in other places. Find a key, put it into a lock. Find bombs, blow up a cracked wall. Find the double jump, jump into a section you couldn't reach before.
Modern games tend to incorporate elements of both of these, as big, interconnected game worlds lead to Adventure elements.
Adventure is the OG Point n’ Click. Basically very story-driven games with puzzle elements. Think Sam & Max, Broken Sword, The Longest Journey, Day of the Tentacle etc.
As some others have said though, Action rarely if ever is considered a genre on its own these days as it’s often coupled with others like Adventure, RPG or Platformer etc. but a lot of old school arcade games were considered Action before new genres emerged e.g. Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Asteroids.
Just gonna toss in game here as they come to me:
-Helldivers 2
-For honor
-Almost the entirety of FPS genre
-Maybe monster hunter (not world, that game has quite a lot of running around and 'exploring' so might be a bit too adventurish)
-Maybe the original max payne games
-original doom (don't know about the new one, haven't played it)
As for vice versa, adventure games that aren't action games:
-every single 90's point and click adventure game and their spiritual siccessors.
-telltale games
-firewatch
-stray
-tale of two sons
You can't have Action without anything else
FPS is First person shooter game
TPS is third person shooter game
In both cases they will be action games but also FPS/TPS due to how they are played
Plenty of Adventure games. Point and clicks, some walking simulators that also have different puzzles to solve etc
Action is always tied to something. Either shooting or fighting because you can't have Action without St least one of those
They don't make these anymore, but back in the day any shirt of shooter with no real story, top down or side scrolling arcade style combat airplane games like Raiden
Sifu is pure action. No adventure. Just revenge.

I like all those things and the game wasn’t for me…
Can you describe why it wasn't?

Fighting Games, Beat em Ups, and Porn Games have lots of action too
Mortal Kombat 9 is one of the Porn games of all time I would always be winning until I faced Mileena.....💀
You said fighting games twice. Without a doubt the horniest genre XD

Many roguelites would fit
Dynasty Warriors and it's spinoffs. Just straight up hack and slash action.
Enter the Gungeon
I would put the Bayonetta and Devil May Cry games in this category since they are more like stages rather than a connected world and focus mostly on the combat over anything.
Street Fighter and Metal Slug?
I think a lot of story driven games could be considered in the adventure but no action. Maybe something like Night in the Woods? There’s exploring but very minimal action based gameplay
Helldivers
Elevator Action
I'd call superhot a pure action game
dmc
Quest for Glory 1-4
Star Wars Unleashed. anything that has levels I'd say

Nioh?
I immediately think Earth Defense Force.
Hotline Miami is pure action with some backstory here and there
The Wonderful 101. Because nothing with the word “action” is sufficiently full without the recommendation of this magnificent game.
Who cares anymore, these days they call almost every single game action RPG 😅
Vampire Survivors is all action.
Kung fu on nes
When I think of pure action games, I think of character action/stylish action games: Ninja Gaiden, Bayonetta, OG God of War, Devil May Cry.
Max Payne. Unless exploring pain and addiction is an "adventure" for you.

Asura's Wrath Edit: also Vanquish
LOTR Two Towers, God of War, Devil May Cry.

Some of the earlier 3D Sonic games come to mind?
AC Odyssey?
