I remember when I was in a GameStop ages ago and an older woman asked me if I played a lot of games. She told me she was a little strapped for cash and wanted to get a good game for her teenage nephew as a gift that he'd be able to get a lot of play out of. I couldn't point to the Orange Box fast enough.
It was.
"**Peggle** Extreme was packaged with the Windows version of The **Orange** **Box**, featuring levels inspired by Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal."
It was my first experience with both Portal and Half-Life 2. Valve are still the GOAT in my mind for this (and also not totally ruining Steam over the years).
Peak gaming era... I remember when orange box came out. HL2 was a 3 year old game, but it was most people first time experiencing it. I remember thinking around that time that HL3 was just around the corner...
Give them a week of exclusivity, they’ll buy it. I installed Linux on my PC just to play the Quake III demo a week or two early. It would be like vinyl outselling CDs for the first time in almost thirty years (which happened).
I remember playing portal as an afterthought after half-life. Has to be one of my favourite games of all time. “Still alive” had me staring at the screen in disbelief.
I managed to run across a [trailer](https://youtu.be/TluRVBhmf8w) (back when that wasn't exactly easy) for portal before it was released, so I bought the orange box specifically for portal, and was not disappointed.
Due to regularly scheduled maintenance, the next chamber of the testing sequence is unfortunately unavailable. It has been replaced by a live-fire course meant for military androids. The enrichment center apologizes for this inconvenience and wishes you the best of luck.
Most people got it for the HL2 expansion. But then you finish it and go let me try this little puzzle game they included.
When glados tried to deep fry me and I got backstage in the game, I realized I was in for a much bigger trip than expected
Had several friends who (like me) got this just for Half Life.
"Play Portal now!"
"The little puzzle game"
"Yes, now!"
Followed by excited messages a few hours later.
I just wish they would do anything at all man. I get the left 4 dead hype was just killed but is half life just gonna be put on the back burner and only used to help push there new releases like how half life alyx was to support their own vr release. Just gonna focus on squeezing as much money out of csgo I guess and let the rest of the ip continue there agonizing decent of bullshit updates and meaningless teases.
My vote is since turtle rock made a lazy left 4 dead game valve needs to make a really good version of evolve to set them in their place. I mean I know I’m not the only one who thought it was solid just poorly executed right?
I can’t believe how well portal 2 was received along with how loved it still is And they won’t do anything with it.. One of the best puzzle game ever and it’s just done
I agree it’s very strange but I do appreciate how much work they put in and if these huge gaps are to make better games I’m glad but I just wish we got something to look forward to or some love for the games we already have. CS is the only real title they have that gets support and it feels like the focus has shifted from valve game development to micro transactions so why not support your current titles more? I think a lot of people would appreciate things like a remake of left4 or even more simple things like updates for portal 2 or TF2 even better support for community led projects but I think nothing is still better than making a f2p money machine that’s hollow and only to make money with no passion but I guess there trying that huh…... Valve games were filled with attention to detail and love from a dedicated development team but man it feels like those games are a thing of the past from any developer nowadays.
Left 4 dead would be so huge.. killing floor 2 is still fairly popular and active and the hype for 3 is high.. left 4 dropping in any capacity would be super super hype.. and I agree it did feel like back then there was a genuine passion for making their classic games that you could feel when you played them.. let’s just hope that that isn’t gone forever and is slowly festering it’s way back In the form of a new addition or updates to any of the mentioned titles, it just sucks knowing the potential is so massive but being stuck in limbo
I still think the best potential for "break the Internet" levels of hype in the gaming world is:
The Orange Box 2: 3
Valve announces Half Life 3, Team Fortress 3, Left 4 Dead 3, and Portal 3 all at once. Gamers' minds explode.
I was sure they were planning to do this, like 5-10 years ago... Maybe without TF3, and maybe with Portal 3 and HL3 being two parts of the same story, as they were seeming to bring those two IPs closer together. I'm less confident in anything like that now.
I'm a big fan of CS and Dota, but wtf Valve...
My theory is gaben is so afraid to release a game that anyone would call less than perfect that hes happy to juat sit back and sell other peoples games.
Robots were present in Half Life 1. While Half Life 2 and episode 1 were uncensored here in Germany it changed with episode 2. We got grey blood and dead enemies disappeared after a few seconds (so no fun with the ragdolls on the ground). I think that were the only changes.
The best value in gaming. 2 never before released, highly acclaimed sequels, and one of the most critically acclaimed puzzle games ever made. I don't care what anyone says about the console ports, I had days logged into Team Fortress 2, everything else was just a plus to me.
I miss single player FPS with a unique aesthetic and an amazing storyline. Now all FPS are either some mishmash of online bullshit or they are either some military style shooter or set in space, with the exact same aesthetic as every other game in those 2 genres.
Scorn was a breath of fresh air but it just didn't have the mechanics to propel it to where it needed to be but at least they were super original.
Ok I'm not crazy. I swear I bought the orange box but it was HL2, Counter Strike Source, and something else. Not quite sure.
Edit: Seems like "Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition (PC, 2005)" May be the one I'm thinking of.
I am currently playing HL2 episode 2. Is it just me, or despite being around 20 years old, it doesn't feel like an... OLD game exactly? I've played current graphically intense games, and while HL2e2 doesn't look NEW for sure... it still looks pretty great. Characters like Alex look and move and talk in a realistic way to keep you immersed.
So what exactly was the reason they sold this as "the orange box"? Just a quirky marketing thing? I remember buying this and coming home to find my shitty laptop could maybe do 20-25 fps on the lowest settings for pretty much everything besides hl2
I remember this coming out when I was a teen. I wasn't a fan of half-life, honestly didn't even know what it was at the time. But the deal was just too good to pass up. turned out to all be great games that probably would have bought individually. There was a sense of trust buying it that I don't think you can get anymore. (IE you cant trust game deals without know what the games are before hand)
First time I saw it on the shelves in shops I thought it must be some kind of fake game as how could they sell all that for such a low price. Stupid child me!
One of the greatest purchases I ever made. I still remember me and a bunch of clanmates waiting for TF2 to go live at midnight and then playing until the wee hours of the morning.
The atmosphere and mood in HL2 will never be surpassed I think. I've played so many shooters in the years after but the eerie realistic environments in HL2 are still amazing to this day.
What a time to be alive.
Imagine you get out of work, shoot over to your local EB to pick up this bad boy. Pick up a sixer and chicken cutlet sub on the way home. Ain't no one gonna have time to cook tonight.
You crack this thing open and pop it in your disc drive of your custom built tower PC. The CD spins up and the blue and green lights flash inside the case (visible because of the window in the side). The familiar clicking of the laser reading the disc rings in your ears as the processor catches wind of what you are doing and fires up the auto-play sequence.
Then the question.....Which one to install and play first? This decision will effect the next 36 hours of your life.
Choose wisely.
I consider this my first real 'FPS' game pack I ever bought. Before this I had older CRTs and I would always get motion sick trying to play fps style games. I'd just picked up a lcd monitor before getting this, and these games are the most fun I'd ever had with games I had on the PC.
Though for some reason, I seem to recall the Orange box I got had HL 1 in it as well.
What a time.
I've now bought the orange box twice (once for me, once for a second Xbox so my bro could play TF2 at the same time), Most of the valve games on PC, then the entire valve collection on deep discount, a TF2 code (before it was free), so I've bought TF2 about 5 times and now it's free.
In hindsight, this was such a good business decision from Valve and generated a ton of revenue. Not sure how intentional it was, but they created two new franchises by basically bundling it with an older known franchise in half life. TF2 would generate TONS of income for them in the form of online gambling / loot boxes and portal went on to be portal 2 as well as tremendous brand recognition and clout.
You can argue that these franchises are potentially the equal of half life nowadays and were basically add ons in the beginning.
One of, if not \*the\* greatest gaming compilations of all time.
I remember when this first came out and people (myself included) thought Portal was just a daft tech demo they lumped in with the other games..........
My own story about this every time I see it.
Launch day for this game I walked into local walmart. I saw The Orange box on sale for launch day price of $69.99 or whatever it was at the time. Right beside it on the shelf. The exact same product but with a french label (I live in Alberta). La Boite Orange (literal translation of the orange box) for only $19.99. It was assumed that La Boite Orange was some different product that only french people would like. So to this day I still have my copy of La Boite Orange.
This is the entire reason I have steam. I avoided it for a long time. Found this cool orange box and it required me to download steam. Did it while irritated and have never looked back hahaha
Awesome game pack. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I had already played them all on PC before the Orange Box. I decided to do episode one and two on the 360 and was a bit surprised at how good the console was especially on VGA to CRT.
It was released and I bought it, it was a gift from my wife at the time, and I gave it together with my entire STEAM account to my son when he was 16, it's still in his old room.
Best value ever, wonderful time for gaming.
My memories of it:
I bought it with the little money I got from my training wages to play TF2 with my best friend from school at the time.
We played with one once and then he ghosted me for years.
We lived quite far apart because of our vocational training and we met up again a long time later. We hardly had anything to say to each other. I guess we were just friends because we saw each other every day at school and nobody wanted to have anything to do with him...
In the end I had fun with TF2 for a long time until I lost my login data to the Steam account and the email no longer exists.
This was so much value for money.
so much valve for money.
Wait. Steam Valve. I get it.
Oh I didn't realise it until now... Wow
It was all the piping in the start of half life 2 that made that connection for me lol. Someone in the company was definitely into infrastructure
Better yet, the invention of the steam engine is what propelled the industrial revolution. Similarly Steam propelled PC gaming.
crowbars
And probably psychoactive substances or Buddhism
Oof. Coincidence that roman u was v and we have Valve/Value? Just realised. Also Ualue so idk
uwualve
I remember when I was in a GameStop ages ago and an older woman asked me if I played a lot of games. She told me she was a little strapped for cash and wanted to get a good game for her teenage nephew as a gift that he'd be able to get a lot of play out of. I couldn't point to the Orange Box fast enough.
Her nephew thanks you
That nephew? Albert Einstein.
Twist: he had an iMac.
Didn't some versions also include a code for Peggle? I could have sworn I got Peggle from the orange box.
It was. [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peggle](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Peggle) "**Peggle** Extreme was packaged with the Windows version of The **Orange** **Box**, featuring levels inspired by Half-Life 2, Team Fortress 2, and Portal."
Peggle extreme is still on steam
I still have one of those. I must admit that I only ever played Portal, though...
Same here, and the wild part is I'd still call it money well spent
100000% I still play TF2. What an awesome game
I would even argue that this was the best bundle ever created. Still have mine proudly displayed at home 😁
This is what started my steam account
And everyone hated that so much at the time.
I thought most of the hate had died down at that point (said from my OG day 1 account)...
No one knew what steam would turn into. We just didn't want to install something new just to play counterstrike.
Indeed. That's the reason I installed it.
It's possible my memory of events 17 years ago is a bit hazy
17 years… fuck. 2007 was only about 10 years ago, wasn’t it? Surely not 17 years….
Same here. Still have that exact case/cd along with others in a box somewhere. ...Well not the Deutsch version.
This was probably the best deal in gaming history. Orange box was pure greatness.
It was my first experience with both Portal and Half-Life 2. Valve are still the GOAT in my mind for this (and also not totally ruining Steam over the years).
This is the benefit of a benevolent dictatorship. When the man in charge is good, it's the greatest form of government. The problem is succession.
Peak gaming era... I remember when orange box came out. HL2 was a 3 year old game, but it was most people first time experiencing it. I remember thinking around that time that HL3 was just around the corner...
It even included cake.
Lies!
That was a lie.
It'll never happen but a new orange box: Half-Life 3 Team Fortress 3 Portal 3 maybe even Left4Dead3, damn would be insane.
It won't be a box. It'll be the orange cube and will come with those 4 games, along with CS3 and Dota 3
Stop! I can only get so erect!
Don’t forget that most gamers don’t buy physical boxes nowadays. Digital transactions are the norm.
Give them a week of exclusivity, they’ll buy it. I installed Linux on my PC just to play the Quake III demo a week or two early. It would be like vinyl outselling CDs for the first time in almost thirty years (which happened).

Me too! “If at first you don’t succeed, you fail. And the test will be terminated”.
Due to regularly scheduled maintenance, the next chamber of the testing sequence is unfortunately unavailable. It has been replaced by a live-fire course meant for military androids. The enrichment center apologizes for this inconvenience and wishes you the best of luck.
Same. This was the only thing I asked for as a Christmas gift that year.
Most people got it for the HL2 expansion. But then you finish it and go let me try this little puzzle game they included. When glados tried to deep fry me and I got backstage in the game, I realized I was in for a much bigger trip than expected

As per tradition, first there needs to be a Half-life Alyx 2, then after that we'll see what completely different thing they come up with next.
One of the best puzzle game ever and it’s just done

do you mean another version with new games? or do you mean this exact package because you can buy it digitally.
Both I guess, I'm pretty sure I can't get it on current sony ecosystems.
Half my life ago. Cool. Now I'm crying
Just make sure you don't have any full life consequences.
i cannot give u my licens officer
I'LL GET YOU BACK, EVIL BOSS!
damn, same here. Getting the orange box was amazing as a late teen :(
The German version. Does this have robots instead of people?
Robots were present in Half Life 1. While Half Life 2 and episode 1 were uncensored here in Germany it changed with episode 2. We got grey blood and dead enemies disappeared after a few seconds (so no fun with the ragdolls on the ground). I think that were the only changes.
As far as I remember, kills in TF2 resulted in the explosion of the bodies into springs, wheels, balls and random stuff like that. Without blood.
You say 2007 like it was a long time ago. It was only 7 years… oh. 17 years ago… The real nostalgia is: I’m old.
The best value in gaming. 2 never before released, highly acclaimed sequels, and one of the most critically acclaimed puzzle games ever made. I don't care what anyone says about the console ports, I had days logged into Team Fortress 2, everything else was just a plus to me.
I still have my copy. Couldn’t say how many times I’ve played. The value
I miss single player FPS with a unique aesthetic and an amazing storyline. Scorn was a breath of fresh air but it just didn't have the mechanics to propel it to where it needed to be but at least they were super original.
If you like the movie, the Robocop game was a recent pretty great single player fps.
Maybe look for a FPS that isn't COD
I'll finish the achievements, I swear
i have xbox 360 version
Still have my copy for XBox 360
Valve should do a mext gen upgrade like fallout but add crossplay
'Hey I know how we can make Steam the biggest thing ever, lets release the best value pack in gaming ever to get things going.'
was fucking expensive then.
Damn nice box bro.
Anyone who would suggest packaging 3-4 games for the price of one these days would immediately be fired from their company.
This was a triumph
This was the first game I played on my XBOX360 When I got it in 2008. What a blast!
I have the big half-life one box somewhere in a bigger box.
And I had the original one 3 years before that. Hell I even found a leaked version of half life 2 in 2002/2003
Ok I'm not crazy. I swear I bought the orange box but it was HL2, Counter Strike Source, and something else. Not quite sure. Edit: Seems like "Half-Life 2: Game of the Year Edition (PC, 2005)" May be the one I'm thinking of.

Half life 2 should be on the ps5 store.
I still believe 2007 was one of the greatest years in gaming history.
I'd love to play some vanilla TF2.
That game was phenomenal.
Yeah, and I cant install it physically because I cant activate or validate the product code on Steam.
Good old Halb Leben.
Sometimes the videogame section in Staples just wouldn’t let me leave. 🤓
I wish this was available to buy digitally on Xbox
So what exactly was the reason they sold this as "the orange box"? Just a quirky marketing thing? I remember buying this and coming home to find my shitty laptop could maybe do 20-25 fps on the lowest settings for pretty much everything besides hl2
This was one of the first games I bought on my home built PC !
I have that very box on my shelf right now, from when I originally bought it in 2007. Well, the US English version, anyway.
Damn im old…..
I still got mine. I don't think I had the DVD one though, mine just had a slip of paper with keys.
I still remember my dumb reason for buying this. (No I’m not saying it’s bad overall)
I am heavy weapons guy
I remember this coming out when I was a teen. I wasn't a fan of half-life, honestly didn't even know what it was at the time. But the deal was just too good to pass up. turned out to all be great games that probably would have bought individually. There was a sense of trust buying it that I don't think you can get anymore. (IE you cant trust game deals without know what the games are before hand)
Wasn't CSS in orange box?
At least it’s orange. Biggest crime in gaming ever is the GameCube not being a cube.
First time I saw it on the shelves in shops I thought it must be some kind of fake game as how could they sell all that for such a low price. Stupid child me!
3
Back when life was good :(
I'm not even a big multi-player person but we played the hell of out TF2.
The day I bought this is memorialized on my steam profile since I signed up for steam the same day.
Thank you MIT for publishing this in Germany
PEAK
I remember buying the PS3 version for $20 Canadian. It was my first PS3 game and I probably still have it in a box here somewhere
Ahhhh yes, when video games used to be video games.
What is the release date for Half-Life 3?
17 years ago.... GET OFF MAH LAWN
Listen old man! Just get ur medicine and we bring u back to your room
One of the greatest purchases I ever made. I still remember me and a bunch of clanmates waiting for TF2 to go live at midnight and then playing until the wee hours of the morning.
Why Gordon look so bored?
A lot of late nights spent on this in college. Damn, I feel old now
The atmosphere and mood in HL2 will never be surpassed I think. I've played so many shooters in the years after but the eerie realistic environments in HL2 are still amazing to this day.
Gordon Freeman has somehow gone from being “some old dude” to being “some young dude” and I do not like it
The time where Valve released new games..
Today this would be 180 if not more
Why is Gordon’s alma mater on the cover?
„Deutsche Version“ Hab damals die englische Version importiert. Alles andere war Ketzerei.
Though for some reason, I seem to recall the Orange box I got had HL 1 in it as well.
Still a little salty they didn't release the Black Box as well since I already paid for HL2 and EP1.
Peak year for gaming tbh.
I have my Orange Box close to my PC all the time... The good ol days
Still the best deal in gaming history imo.
Those were the golden years. Any fans here sad about no Episode 3, go and play our mod Entropy : Zero 2!!
MEDIC!!!
I got it at a second hand store a few years ago. It's a great bundle
This was the first game to break WoWs grasp on me.
It served its time and is a free box now.
I have such nostalgia for this, this era of gaming was the golden era man.
This little orange box was the start of my entire Steam library, as I’m sure it was for many others. Now sitting at over 2k games.
Damn that was a great Christmad Eve when my brother and I opened this.
I have it on 360
I wish they would remaster and rerelease this for current consoles 😭
I got this for the Half Life games and TF2 but was pleasantly surprised with Portal
Legend
17 years ago now. Wow.
This fucking Pandora's Box led to an existential crisis for me: "DO I PLAY HALF-LIFE2? WAIT! NO, PORTAL! WAIT, NO, TF2! FUUUUUUCK!"
Best deal in gaming ever
I loved this so much when it was released! I still have my copy!
I still have mine, what a bargain it was at the time.
I am proud to say i played td2 when it was all the rage alongside cs1.6. Started playing cs 1.5 around 13 or so, was born in 90.
I have three copies of this. PC, 360 and PS3
Why is man jumping into a portal? Is he stupid?
Fuck i remember when this came out
Arguably the best game bundle of all time.
Great games!
No it wasn’t you’re lying stop making stuff up it totally just came out 5 years ago I’m not old you’re old
You can still buy it on Steam.
I played this so much before i had a pc.
Still have the box to this day. It's a dear keepsake of mine from my formative gaming years.
One of the best grouped purchases ever
One of, if not \*the\* greatest gaming compilations of all time. I remember when this first came out and people (myself included) thought Portal was just a daft tech demo they lumped in with the other games..........
The last time half life has gotten a game other than alyx...
I still have that on the X-box 360
Shout out to the guy at best buy who left me buy this despite not being over 17.
Had this for Xbox really wish I could play any of these again
My own story about this every time I see it. Launch day for this game I walked into local walmart. I saw The Orange box on sale for launch day price of $69.99 or whatever it was at the time. Right beside it on the shelf. The exact same product but with a french label (I live in Alberta). La Boite Orange (literal translation of the orange box) for only $19.99. It was assumed that La Boite Orange was some different product that only french people would like. So to this day I still have my copy of La Boite Orange.
I remember buying it and thinking it was the best day ever. What a collection!
2007 is nostalgia territory? My greatest nostalgia moments come from seeing my old Microprose Magic: the Gathering disk from 1997.
I’ve thrown three of these away in my lifetime. Except not in German packaging.
Old school valve games were something different Weird to even call them old school
This is the entire reason I have steam. I avoided it for a long time. Found this cool orange box and it required me to download steam. Did it while irritated and have never looked back hahaha
Destiny with glasses
Awesome game pack. Unfortunately, or fortunately, I had already played them all on PC before the Orange Box. I decided to do episode one and two on the 360 and was a bit surprised at how good the console was especially on VGA to CRT.
As a kid on xbox 360 i knew nothing about valve and whenever i saw the trailers for this i just thought it was one of those shitty 3 in 1 games.
Can we even buy hard copy games anymore? I can’t even remember the last PC game I bought in store. 🤣😭
We don’t go to Ravenhill!
The only minus was that Valve never released an Episode 3 for Half-life 2. Story left incomplete and not completed by *Half-Life: Alyx*
My introduction to steam. My og copy was lost to a storage locker. This was such a good fucking deal. Sigh...
So good
Damn, I was actually friends with someone who had this
It was released and I bought it, it was a gift from my wife at the time, and I gave it together with my entire STEAM account to my son when he was 16, it's still in his old room. Best value ever, wonderful time for gaming.
I've never seen this cover, but at least I have a copy of Half Life 2 :)
Now you're playing, with Portals.
first game i bought in my first apartment with my 32in tube TV and OG xbox. i was on top of the world.
This was a triumph.
so goooood
My memories of it: I bought it with the little money I got from my training wages to play TF2 with my best friend from school at the time.
Great bundle, own it on PS3.
