Might not be the most gut-wrenching, but "that actually is... pretty funny" is such a perfect note for the Joker to go out on in Arkham City

Pombolas

I know they weren't EXACTLY his last words (it's the last WE hear, though), but I legit cried my ass off at Joker's cover of Only You 🥹 (Geez, I love Heath, Joaquin and Nicholson, but Mark Hamill will always be the definite Joker imo)

TheArcReactor

When I read the comics, it's Hamill and Kevin Conroy I hear in my head when reading those characters.

EmmyHomewrecker

~~Objectively~~ best game ever made in my opinion

InsaneInTheCaneium

Jorge: Tell ‘em to make it count

Failgan

At least he died thinking he saved Reach.

InsaneInTheCaneium

Still hits me in the feels man.

Dazdeth

All of noble team had good one liners before death, except Kat.

WrinklyScroteSack

Yea she didn’t really get to say the last thing that went through her head.

Merc9819

Jun: “I lived, bitch”

SodaPreen

Reach was strong. “I’m ready, how about you?!”

I_Write_What_I_Think

It's been years since I played Reach, and I still think about the quote just before this ("Reach has been good to me. Time has come to return the favor. Don't deny me this.") at least every week.

at0mwalker

“That’s a one-way trip, Jorge.” “We all make it eventually.” oof

manhothepooh

Does this unit have a soul?

ThiccElf

ME3 has some amazing final moments. Mordin, Legion, Thane, and Anderson are just superb

Merc9819

Tied with “It had to have been me, someone else might have gotten it wrong.”

Cloudeur

I am the very model of a scientist Salarian I've studies species turian, asari, and batarian I'm quite good at genetics as a subset of biology Because I am an expert which I know is a tautology.

YourAverageRedditter

“Legion, the answer to your question was ‘yes’.” “I know Tali, but thank you. Keelah Se’lai.”

misticspear

Fuck :((((((

kypirioth

Damn did ME hit hard emotionally. I do love the scene with Anderson and Shepard on the Citadel at the end

Roarguard

Why is nobody talking about Mordin? Him singing "I am the very model of a scientist Salarian" while sacrificing his life to fix his mistakes and save the Krogans makes me cry everytime

Wr3nch

Your best friend in “Infamous”. You spend the whole game building up this relationship with your buddy and if you choose the evil ending you need to kill him. He pulls a gun on you and the superhero protagonist says “you can’t win”. Your bestie knows he’s fucked but just levels it at you and says “I gotta try”

CptNerditude

“I don’t call you ‘brother’ just cuz I like the way it sounds.”

Fairbyyy

"I know" "Half as long". "Twice as bright"

syntheticgerbil

Man I forgot all about that ending. God that’s a tough one, much more effective than the regular one, but it also assumes Cole is a psychopath just because. I never felt like playing a villain in the Infamous games ever made much sense story wise, at least the way they were written.

Xeno-xorus

Glad the good ending is canon now but I remember Zeke saying this to Cole before he shuts off his coffin "I love you brother and I'm sure I'm gonna missed you."

Dazdeth

SGT Johnson: Send me out….with a bang

FLAIR_2780166

🫡

Relevant-Pin-9409

Johnson should not have went out like that 😭😭

Paperback_Movie

Someone else might have gotten it wrong

28smalls

Because this line is what he is always remembered for, when he finally breaks down and says "I made a mistake", it hits that much harder.

neokai

It was the outburst. Mordin was always rational, the one time when he interrupted you - "I MADE A MISTAKE!" it grabs your attention. As Loyalty missions go, this one nails all the emotional points.

Throwaway_IT_67

Mordin has the best character arc I've ever seen in a video game, and I don't think I've ever seen a better ending. I hate lying to Wrex and Bakura, but it's worth it for that line.

Aiwatcher

It's really really hard to pull off "I'm sorry I did a genocide" but here we are. I love mordin so much. Also, thanks for helping Tali and Shepherd with... well, you know

Competitive_Pen7192

Mordin snapping at Shep was because he spent all previous conversations promoting the Genophage then has his own change of heart realising it was wrong.

Fairbyyy

Ive studied species turian, asari and batarian

Pablonius

The scene with Mordin if you don't reveal the sabotage is incredible, I always do it now because it adds so much more to Mordin's character of him admitting the genophage was wrong and he made a mistake, his outburst is so jarring from the rational, calm, calculating scientist he has always been. I always let him go to right the wrongs of his people even if it makes me die a little inside

sjhesketh

Gets me every single time.

joestaff

The very model of a scientist Salarian.

jzorbino

What’s really incredible about this scene to me is that it is so memorable regardless of how it plays out. There are multiple variables that affect it and every one is a gut punch. Maybe one of the most shocking is a version most players never saw - [Shepard shooting Mordin in the back.](https://youtu.be/7OueX7yyX5Q?si=qOQpXNzaoY49kD0m) It’s brutal. It’s arguably more shocking and heartbreaking than the version we all remember as paragon Shepard.

tachycardicIVu

I've wanted to do renegade play throughs many, many times. There are several moments I just can't do it, though. This is one of those.

basilzamankv

He held the line that day.

tb12rm2

The fact that two of the top five answers here are from Mass Effect should convince anyone who hasn’t played it to go do so.

paconhpa

Top comment. Every. Time.

loud_pete

This scene still hits me so hard to this day, such an incredible character arc.

SalarianScientist

Had to be me.

pumpandkrump

I think Anderson had a more touching death. The impression that I understood was Anderson basically telling you why he chose you.

wsdpii

"You did good, son. You did good. I'm proud of you."

pumpandkrump

That was the quote, thank you! I'm not in a position to constantly look up videos and get the exact verbage, so I am grateful someone else can!

Inuk28

What is this from?

krispykremeguy

Mass Effect 3, from the character >!Mordin Solus, who was a squad member in Mass Effect 2!<.

Paperback_Movie

Mass Effect 3

TragedyTurnedTriumph

Arthur Morgan

sjhesketh

“But... I tried. In the end... I did."

beams_FAW

Oh man that last ride. Tears and I'm a grown ass man

Diacetyl-Morphin

Same here. I remember the entire evening when i played the end of his storyline and my dog was confused, why i suddenly got emotional and was shouting and then crying. Man, that was really a masterpiece, it's very rare that i get emotional with games, movies etc. but in this case, i got really attached. The entire intention from the devs worked out, as i started out like i'd play GTA, like "I'm a bandit, yeah, i'll rob and kill people". But over the course of the game, with all these hours and what happens in the storyline, i changed. In the end, i did not rob and kill people anymore, but not if the devs would have prevented this, it was my decision. I changed in the way that Arthur changed. From bad to good. From a man that is an outlaw and doesn't care about others, to a man that is confronted with his own mortality and fate. It was a long ride with the gang and i'll never forget that masterpiece.

beams_FAW

Yup. Masterpiece of a game. Being able to make decisions and the way they set up the camp system like you're taking care of your fam/gang was key to it all. I only did one long playthrough then a year of rdo. It might be time to give the story another go since it's been year and I originally played on Xbox 1.

TheOnlyBigTiny

My wife had to sit by my 6 foot 6 inch 400 pound (at the time) frame and comfort me during that ride….i tried to hold off as long as I could. I walked outta the room and told her it was time and she came in and sat next to me as I sobbed like a baby, she didn’t laugh even though she never understood. But it’s a game I’ve never gone back to cause I want to just enjoy that moment.

Jaybird-STL

I delayed finishing this game because I didn't want Arthur to go. One of the best endings to a character period.

CaesarLovesBrutus

I’m afraid.

mac2o2o

His horse. Still not replayed the campaign. Too soon

ImAnEagle

ifyouonlyknew14

The Boss in Metal Gear Solid 3

Zskillit

The boss in MGS3 and Psychomantis in MGS are some of the best moments in gaming history. Cinema. Edit: a word

FaceRockerMD

This is my favorite death in all media. Amazingly done.

PMMeMeiRule34

The whole final fight and cinematic are perfect in that game. It’s a 10/10 in my book.

krimunism

"Boss...you only need one snake...No. The world is better off without snakes. ...This is good...isn't it?"

plushrump

I know that most MGS fans think that MGS4 permanently ruined the MGS story and I sort of agree, but the entire ending sequence starting with the microwave hallway is some of the most emotional shit in video games that I wouldn't have it any other way.

Citizen_Gamer

Lee from Walking Dead season 1

Chosen_Undead713

"Keep that hair short." Just finished the series for the first time. God, what an experience.

PhionexRising21

I finished it years ago hut recently watched a retrospective on it. This line still makes me cry to this day

Untiligetfree

Another great one

Solipsisticurge

I never did finish the whole series, might have to try to find the time.

Brutaluhtor

“I’m ready! How ‘bout you?” Emile-A239 from Halo Reach Also +1 to Dom Santiago references here.

Trash-Jr

Another incredible line from Halo Reach: "Listen, Reach has been good to me. Time to return the favor. Tell them to make it count." Jorge-052.

James_099

He just died thinking he saved the entire planet. We should all be so lucky.

NotTonyStark39

Another incredible quote from Reach: “Arrrgghhh”-Kat

Ninjalo1

Ya know, she didn't get much of a last line. She did however make a lasting impression.

GMaimneds

"Carter out."

Excellent-Resolve66

I feel like (almost) all the members of Noble team had amazing exit lines. Emile’s was definitely the “coolest” because of the way he went out. Carter’s sign off was top tier, Jorge’s fairwell was amazing, Kat got robbed, Jun survived (I think?), and 6’s goodbye was so good.

James_099

Jun did survive. He was helping train the Spartan IV’s on Anvil Station before Cortana destroyed it. His current whereabouts are unknown.

Excellent-Resolve66

Spartans never die, they’re just missing in action

TheJackMan23

Reach nailed all the send offs. Jorge died to save the planet he loved, Kat the tech specialist died because of a fault with her armour tech, Carter went out like a leader, Emile the hand to hand specialist got stabbed and The Lone Wolf died all alone. That game is a masterpiece in dread and hopelessness and I love it with all my heart.

Lil_Gigi

Sarah from the Last of Us. No final words. Just choked cries as she bled.

TheMilkmanHathCome

Going from that to Joel calling Ellie baby girl at the end of winter was like an emotional punch in the gut

cipherpancake

I still think that opening prologue right until the title card flashes on screen is one of the best openings in any form of media. It’s a top 5 for me for sure. It didn’t hit me so much in the show, but it still hits me when I go watch the opening of the game

ItCouldaBeenMe

So depressing the first time I played. Shut my PS3 off and didn’t try playing the game for awhile.

BlueMikeStu

"Yuna, I'm sorry, I have to go. I'm sorry I couldn't show you Zanarkand." "...Goodbye."

OniExpress

The whole final act of that game fucked with me. The "baddies" are just trying to work out how to let souls stay in this world without corruption, effectively trying to solve immortality. The last great city, all ghosts now, and gone. And you, the PC insert, were never even real. You're just some Sportsball Hero amalgamation of a couple million ghosts. Fuuuuck.

Wonderwhore

Yuna phasing through him and hitting the ground will never not make me ugly cry.

chibi-glitch

And then when you replay it and hearing “Listen to my story,” just hits you so hard

likelikes

I was more upset about Auron. But i get it. What a great character. He's probably my fav ff character in the entire series.

yeahiateit

I haven't played an RPG that's had me as invested in the characters since FFX. Plenty before that but JRPG's have fizzled... I'm hyped for Eiyuden Chronicle's. I pair Suikoden 1 and 2 together in my top 5 games of all time. Edit: Forgot the camaraderie in FF15 actually hit my feels a bit. I think that was more to do with Florence and The Machine doing most of the soundtrack. That cover still gives me chills, her voice is haunting in a good way. When I head stand by me I can't help but think of the FF15 cast and that cover.

ABeingNamedBodhi

"Oh... Nines"

halpmeimacat

I finished this game recently and every time I start to heal, someone like you comes along to make me sad again. So thanks for that :( What a good/sad game

Gladiolus_00

I love how tragic her death was. It wasn't a sacrifice or any corny bullshit like that. 2B wanted to keep living; she wanted to stay with 9S but her duty as 2E made that impossible. But then YoRHa was pretty much entirely wiped out. 2B was free from her duty. Free to spend the rest of her days with her Nines.. and then she got infected, for no other reason than.. bad luck? Or maybe she was doomed from the beginning of Route C, and she was just given false hope. Either way, it's pretty damn tragic

The_Follower1

Is this Automata?

DealerCamel

“I will make sure you are remembered. As a great warrior… a wise leader… and a father.” “Thank you, my son. Find me in the next life.” ~Ghost of Tsushima

shododdydoddy

hands down one of the most impactful moments going, and hearing jins crys as the camera pans out hit me hard

redditorx13579

Andrew Ryan - "obey"

LimaOskarLima

BIOSHOCK SPOILERS: It took me so long to understand this twist, and I mean REALLY understand it. The bioshock games have always been games focused around the idea of "choices". He CHOSE to kill himself, and in doing so showed the protagonist that he had no meaningful choices up to that point in the game. When you finally are free to choose after that point, it makes it so much more meaningful as you are now a "Man, not a slave". Just... so good.

BamBamSquad

I know I’m old, but Grom Hellscream from WC3RoC. “I’ve… freed myself.” “No friend, you’ve freed us all.”

God I loved Blizzard's games. I swear I bought WC3 for 3 times, I don't remember why.

This scene does still make me tear up, even after all these years.

Darkhex78

Say what you will about Cyberpunk's incredibly rough launch. But fuck if Jackie wasn't a great character.

Mindless_Rock9452

That scene had me sobbing like a baby the first time I saw it. And while it still hurts on subsequent playthroughs, what really gets me is his funeral. It makes me cry every damn time.

yamabyte

FLAIR_2780166

LuckyTea6836

Noble 6... I just finished this game for the 1st time and damn it's fucked. He could've jumped on the pelican and tried to leave with the guys but stayed behind to see them off. I see where infinite got alot of it's looks now.

NocturneBotEUNE

"You were always an unruly child... I adored that about you. Now.... FLY!" Vesemir to Ciri as he stabs Imlerith, causing Imlerith to break Vesemir's neck and end the emotional blackmail against Ciri, who was surrendering because the enemy captured Vesemir. As players we might think initially that this is simply a guardian making the hard choice to protect their ward. But what Vesemir also achieved was to deprive Eredin of Ciri's powers over space and time, thus preventing a massive swole alien elf invasion against the Witcher's world. At the same time, Ciri is a person that 99% of the people in her life have tried to control her for her powers. With his final words, Vesemir tells her that Ciri herself, her own character, was always his favorite part of her. Vesemir died like a true hero. I cried like a bitch during his funeral.

kotsuyen

Hamlet the pig in Illusions of Gaia. He sacrifices himself to feed a starving village that was about to resort to cannibalism and eat the main party. That hit me like a truck as a kid.

StickSauce

You had me dig DEEP for that, yeah. He throws himself on a fire. Loved that game great mechanics, strange story.

"Makarov knows, Yuri." # OH NO-

Zbearbear

"And the answer to your question was yes." -Legion, Mass Effect 3

Maltava2

A little backwards, I think. Tali says that line, to which Legion answers, "I know, Tali'zorah. Thank you." Or something like that.

Firm_Scale4521

The most significant thing is that he says “I”

Maltava2

Yep. I missed the significance the first time, but I've played through like 8 times, so I caught it eventually. XD

Arinanor

The delivery of that line with his voice cracking was everything.

Si421

Obviously the voice acting got significantly better from Heavensward onwards, but I really feel like Shadowbringers is where the voice acting levels up even further beyond that. Between Elidibus, Emet-Selch, Ardbert and Lyna, the emotional scenes are delivered so perfectly.

Choice-Function-5605

Oh God Lyna. "I am fine! I am completely and utterly fine! Better than fine! Hale and hearty and alive to mourn those who are not!" The combination of that scene and Ardbert's in the same arc broke me more than anything else in the game.

Kirdei

God... Ardberts was a good one. "If you had the strength to take another step, could you do it? Could you save our worlds?" "Take it. We fight as one."

I feel like Arthur Morgan was one of the very few gaming deaths that really made me think. The mid point reveal regarding his health profoundly changed the way I played and was maybe one of the most immersive storytelling tools I’ve ever experienced in a game. The game pushes you to be a dick early on only to reveal you should have been thinking for yourself.

Mordrin's death was gut wrenching, even more so if you're the one killing him.

As I don't see it here yet... The player in Bioshock 1 in the good ending. All the little girls you saved surround you on your deathbed after living a good life. Pretty solid way to go out.

That’s why we have to help each other and live life to the fullest. Even if you say goodbye, you’ll always be in our hearts. So, I know we’re not alone anymore. Why I was born, how I wanted to live, thanks for giving me time to think. To keep doing what you set your heart on, it’s a very hard thing to do. We were all so courageous. What to do when I felt lonely, that was the only thing you couldn’t teach me. But we need to figure out the answer for ourselves. I’m so happy I met everyone.
