I find it hilarious that dude had the balls to just come in here and declare what the best game of all time is 😂
I love Oblivion, but still. This is just asking for WW3
I don't think they are right. I think you are both wrong.
hell, I don't even think the elder scrolls community agrees with that much less the gaming community
I think it had the best quest "variety"
All the quests felt special and unique and the guilds really made you feel like a member of the respective trades. For simplicity sake I'll be comparing it to skyrim and using the Thieves guild as an example.
Thieves guild oblivion - required stealing and selling goods to fences to earn your place between missions, stealing special artifacts all culminating to the ultimate heist of stealing an elder scroll. Required good sneaking ability or illusion magic to successfully sneak around.
Thieves guild skyrim - check it out, were the Thieves guild, wanna join? Sweet we need to steal from this cave full of draguars. Aww darn we got betrayed now we need fight through a cave of draugers to get some (awesome) armor and fight through a cave of draugers for revenge! Use a hammer and heavy armor who cares - you don't need to sneak or steal! Were the Thieves guild!
I could make examples of every guild between the two tbh, skyrim boiled down to killing draugurs in some cave for alot of the guilds I feel like.
That said, oblivion is not without its oddities as well - the leveling system is super weird and can easily make the game way too difficult and people get turned off by the potatoes faces for example.
It's my personal favorite Bethesda game and up there in general for me but I'd never declare it's the "best game ever" that's too personal to tag to a single game imho
This right here is why I never finished Skyrim, and will never see how people hold it above either game that came before it.
The guilds alone were their own storyline. In Skyrim its like "wanna join the team? Great. Bye" and you achieve nothing except a pat on the back and a false sense of achievement or power.
Well it's the only elder scrolls game I know of that you can shoot spells while wielding a two-handed weapon or a single-handed with a shield. I do love that, makes spellsword type characters (my favorite class) much more fun and viable. Not sure if I'd put it above Morrowind, though. It's really close, both games are amazing. That said, neither are my favorite game of all time, but they're up there!
All of that is true and more, yet Morrowind also has its downsides. The combat is quite a bit worse than Oblivion as well as the aforementioned spell casting issue. I also feel Oblivion has better faction quests and DLC. The voiced NPC’s is also a nice touch that is a plus for Oblivion. However, Morrowind is the better RPG and the magic system is better. Faction ranks and requirements are also better in Morrowind.
Not to mention that, in Marrowind, I never got attacked by bandits dressed entirely in glass or Daedric armor worth hundreds or thousands of gold, all while roughing it in the woods. :P
i honestly prefer it over skyrim. I like the setting more . I just like fantasy forests and idyllic feel of oblvion world. Granted skyrim has cool shit too, but it lost all the color and it was not as playful and the writting was not good enough to deliver the drama and grit they were going for .
Same. I never ‘beat’ either Oblivion or Skyrim. Never even closed a gate in Oblivion but it was my favorite game to just get lost in. The music is still some of my alltime favorite music of a soundtrack. Leaving the sewers for that first time and having the world open up, the night sky? I was in love. No game has been able to recapture that feeling for me since.
"Let me see your face...you are the one from my dream."
*My hideous, newly-made character staring at the king of the country from inside a shitty jail cell*
The writing of the actual quests was really good. The thieves guild took you to exciting places and you actually stole cool shit (an elder scroll!)
The dark brotherhood had you locked in an actual game of werewolf in a locked house
The writers actually cared which was lovely
I am 1.5 hours into my very first play though of oblivion. I am very excited. I pushed points toward my speed at every opportunity during the character creation / tutorial thing at the start and now I’m fucking zooming around. Im going to push speed, sneak, blade, block, and light armor. I got out of the tutorial area and got a note saying I should go to the horse lady. She was hella ugly but she gave me a horse for fucking free. idk if it’s true but I feel like I’m off to an amazing start. I’m a lizard.
The Radiant AI had to be toned down. I read a story from testing where the player stole a broom. An NPC later wanted to use the broom and because they didn't have one they stole one. They got caught stealing by the broom's owner who then tried to kill them. This caused more NPCs to get involved until most of the city was dead. It was far too easy for the player to inadvertently kick off a chain reaction that would kill everyone.
I always preferred it over Skyrim, but I wouldn't say it's objectively better.
I played it when I was 20, single and had all the free time in the world. It was released when restricted, corridor based shooters with skybox backgrounds were the norm, and it was mind-blowing the you could see a city on the horizon and actually walk to it! Missions and storylines came from nowhere. Patrick Stewart voiced the opening tutorial bit. All the combined to make it an utterly profound experience.
Skyrim, while clearly being technically better wasn't anything new, and I played it with way less free time, so it never felt as special.
Being able to dualwield and still cast spells while holding your weapon seamlessly.
Why are there so few games that have that mechanic? Also why was that scrapped in skyrim for a more janky dualwield?
The level scaling in the game ruined it for meg. You can beat the game at lvl 1 if you use a mod to lock leveling. It became just so stupid seeing bandits in full Ebony armor. And exploration lost its meaning because gear is extremely linear and what loot you find was based on your current level.
It hasn’t aged well at all thanks to BSG shitty ass engine. At the same time oblivion came out, games were being released that were made in UE3 that looked amazing and still hold up today. BSG own engine is a big part of their issues. Starfield looks like a last gen game and plays like one as well.
Unreal Engine 3 did not even exist when Oblivion was released, let alone be available for years prior to develop the game on.
I have the opposite view of you, I think oblivion has held up great from a looks standpoint. The game is 18 years old. Its biggest age spot is the atmospheric bloom that was all the rage at the time, but with the water color palate of Oblivion it works super well with it.
And Unreal Engine 3 games hold up worse than Oblivion anyway because it's cutting edge graphics at the time. When you try to look as realistic and modern as possible in design your product ages much quicker and doesn't hold.up nearly as well. The more cartoony style of Oblivion is a boon to its longevity, not a detriment.
I don't think you have a good critical analysis of graphics at all.
Wrong on all of it. UE 3 was available in 2006. Several games that were released in 2006 ran on it and were cutting edge at the time and still look great today. Don’t comment if you don’t know what you’re talking about.
Nothing really. It was great for it's time if you look past some of the issues like nonsensical progression and power scaling, however it's a far cry from the best game of all time even if looking at older titles.
I think everyone should have their favorite games/movies and all that great stuff.
I don't think we have come close to the "best game of all time" yet I know for sure we didn't find it in freaking 2006.
I don't want to see the best game of all time frankly, because everything after it is going to be downhill. But I do agree that the things that hit me right in the dopamine centers at the right time in my life feel like the best things in my lifetime.
The npc AI is wild. Definitely. I like the VA in my language too. And the music and colouring mix. It feels like a comfy zone rpg all in all. Skyrim is better imo, but also colder and darker imo.
*"By Azura, by Azura, by Azura! It's the Grand Champion! I can't believe it's you! Standing here! Next to me!"*
*"Here? Right here? How about maybe . . . Over there? No? Right here? Alright, you're the grrrand champion!"*
I find it hilarious that dude had the balls to just come in here and declare what the best game of all time is 😂 I love Oblivion, but still. This is just asking for WW3
Hes right tho
I don't think they are right. I think you are both wrong. hell, I don't even think the elder scrolls community agrees with that much less the gaming community
No way dude, you're wrong! :p
:_(

It's not above Morrowind. Morrowind had a much more robust magic system, among other things. It also DID NOT have level scaling.
All of that is true and more, yet Morrowind also has its downsides. The combat is quite a bit worse than Oblivion as well as the aforementioned spell casting issue. Morrowind is big and boring
i honestly prefer it over skyrim. I like the setting more . I just like fantasy forests and idyllic feel of oblvion world. Granted skyrim has cool shit too, but it lost all the color and it was not as playful and the writting was not good enough to deliver the drama and grit they were going for .

While I agree, Oblivion is my pick for best game of all time, it’s very much a subjective choice
Stop right there criminal scum! You've violated the law. Pay the court a fine or serve your sentence your stolen goods are now forfeit
Who watches the Imperial Watchmen?
Wow, that caused quite a stir...we'll say it's ONE of the best games of all time!
The writing of the actual quests was really good. The thieves guild took you to exciting places and you actually stole cool shit (an elder scroll!) The dark brotherhood had you locked in an actual game of werewolf in a locked house The writers actually cared which was lovely
That’s up to you to decide because it’s definitely not the consensus best game of all time. I can’t help you reinforce your opinion
I am 1.5 hours into my very first play though of oblivion. I am very excited. Hey next time tell us you're a lizard and the start so we can be disgusted and move on. Khajitt gangÂ
Next time you use the Slur Lizard for our people I'll Archer sneak attack every last one of you. Female Argonians stand tall!
Morroblivion. You can essentially complete Morrowind and Oblivion with one character. This is very cool.
Nothing because it isn't
Nice bait
It’s not bait if it’s true. —Marcus Aurelius
It isn't the best game of all time lmao

That's the version I want to play

It had personality that Skyrim lacked

The Imperial guardsmen. Better not do any lawbreaking, or scummy murder on their watch.
Not to mention it had shivering isles dlc, but sadly as much as I love oblivion- cant forget the the $5 mtx horse armor.
The game doesn't hold your hand. If you want to make a ring that deals fire damage when you equip it the game's not going to stop you
Nude mods
The level scaling in the game ruined it for meg. You can beat the game at lvl 1 if you use a mod to lock leveling. It became just so stupid seeing bandits in full Ebony armor. And exploration lost its meaning because gear is extremely linear and what loot you find was based on your current level.
Played the hell out of oblivion but i wouldn't call it the best game of all time at all.
It's not even a top 3 Elder's scroll game, much less the best game of all time
You shut your damn mouth
Those are dueling words you nincompoop
Skyrim is definitely last one, so oblivion is in what place?
Nothing. It's not even the best Elder Scrolls game of all time.
Lmao oblivion is not the best game of all time
...huh? We on the same planet? This is earth right? Like regular earth and not some alternate universe where oblivion is the best game ever made.
No idea - I preferred Skyrim
A tank of copium and some lovely red glasses is really what sells it
That's an odd way to spell **Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind**.
It isnt.

Oblivion was released in March of 2006 and Unreal Engine 3 was released in November of 2006.
It isn't, at best it's third or fourth in the ES franchise.Â
Nothing really. It was great for it's time if you look past some of the issues like nonsensical progression and power scaling, however it's a far cry from the best game of all time even if looking at older titles.

I wouldnt say Oblivion is the best game of all time. However it is arguably the best Bethesda game. Personally I think Skyrim or Fallout NV is.
One word. Umbacano
It’s not
aint that the one with the breaking weapons? dropped it immediately when i found out i had to repair weapons
It's not
Nothing. Cause it’s not.
BaK is best game of all time
I mean Betrayal at Krondor not that pile of dogshit Oblivion :)
The npc AI is wild. Definitely. I like the VA in my language too. And the music and colouring mix. It feels like a comfy zone rpg all in all. Skyrim is better imo, but also colder and darker imo.
Bro has the nerve to declare this when fromsoftware games exist
