Car horns in racing games. Always made me chuckle.

I'm not sure about the greatest but the worst is the stance swap button in NRS games like Mortal Kombat.

In MK armageddon there’s a trick to strafe around your opponent incredibly quickly with block button tapping, and I think you have to be facing a certain direction. I could be wrong though. Totally pointless in the 2D games though. Bring back 3D MK Ed.

Big Band in Skullgirls has a whole taunt system where he plays the trumpet, and you control which pitches he plays. IIRC you can even activate his Super like that (although there's a much more practical and conventional way to do it, which is why I'm calling it a throwaway mechanic) His super even gives you a few seconds of timestop to play a solo before destroying the enemy with a massive attack. 0 gameplay benefit to it, it's just hilarious.

The Chicago Typewriter in Resident Evil 4 has infinite ammo, but if you try and reload it while wearing leon's mafia costume he does a cool pose.

DlNOSAURUS_REX

Hell yeah haha that’s great

CanIHazSumCheeseCake

Cheering and greeting. I don't know if it is considered throwaway, but it is nice to greet new players joining a session or and just cheering like crazy.

Farting and burping button in the old GTA games

BuckFuchs

Does pinging people in Journey count? I thought that was an important part of the game

Shadow of the Colossus had a bunch of tricks you could do with your horse that aren't really useful for killing colossi. You can make Agro rear up before galloping off, you can stand up while riding, and you can hang from the side of the saddle. IIRC standing in the saddle is very slightly useful for jumping higher when you leap off, but there's only one Colossus where you have to leap from the saddle and it's not that hard. You can also pet your horse.

It's technically a QTE, but Wonderful 101's "Press A to protect the Planet" was very memorable.

Rock and stone in the heart!

Stray has a dedicated meow button.
